Twisted Cane Bowl, Glassblowing Process Demonstration

Today we are making a bowl using the encalmo technique. We have preheated a supio cup with twisted canes to put together with a dark green colored collar. But things don't always go as planned in the hot shop...

Great question! I had quite some time invested in this piece. The bottom cup that we attached took the biggest amoutn of time to make. I would say about 3 days and 3 glassblowing slots to just make the cup. First day I pull the cane and let it cool, the second day I twist the canes together and pull them again, third day I roll the new twisted canes together and make the cup. Once the cup cools we come in for the fourth day and create the piece. This piece took us about an hour to get to the piece where it broke. I would say about 8 hours of work over 4 days (non consecutively) overall to create this one piece.

Man, cut out the broken portion of the color and that would have been a really cool rondel.
