In this video I discuss how professional artists employ the use of a formal Foreground Middleground and Background in their art. Looking at the evidence might surprise you!
This is a casual discussion sharing examples of cool art in the process. I am simply voicing my thoughts on this subject; what I have observed in students and my favourite artists through the years.
I am always trying to look at the best practices for art... and then challenging them with my experience of working in the field. And also what I see when I look at great artists from throughout history and how they apply these ideas in their own work.
With great art, the truth is always in the middle somewhere. That is why there are few formulas for creating good art and illustration.... but many great ideas to help us along the way.
Happy Drawing!

This kind of blew my mind, honestly. I first heard this advice in a different composition video about adding depth (I can't remember who posted atm) They said that making things overlap is the easiest way to show more depth. It was such a simple concept, but it made something click in my mind and my environments/landscape paintings instantly got better. Now, watching this video, I feel like something else really clicked! I really appreciate your explanation of how overlapping shapes make pretty much everything more interesting! I'm definitely excited to try applying this to my illustrations. Thanks, Tim!!
Oh this is just what I hoped to see! Been working on a project and this should help massively!
Hi Tim. Loved this! I don't see too many videos about composition so this was great. I feel like having great composition is very underrated. I also find most videos about composition tend to focus on environment and I really enjoyed you speaking about McGinnis and Frazetta whose works focus on the figure as the main focal of the image! Thank you!
This is great information. I was just considering using some of my photos as background to my drawings. Perfect timing, thanks again!!
Your Tutorials are unreal man. So much Content, so well created! Thank you So much. Learning a lot.
Glad you like them!
This was useful. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Really happy that I found ur channel.. love ur work ❤️
Love all your videos, Tim
You know what, you are so handsome, great voice. I am all into listening now. Thank you for being approachable.
Outstanding video!
Awsome video, Tim.
If you think that's a good idea, you could make a video on how you approach the composition for individual panels on you comics and a future one on how you think an plan you pagination.
You are probably swamped with alson doing your comics, but analising it and maybe doiing a "making of" / "behind the scenes" / "Director commentary" for each individual new issue that is realeased could be something interesting for the views and that doesn't add a lot to your plate since you are aready putting the work on the comic, might as well talk about the process and get a new video to put on the channel out of it.]
Awesome idea Tim!
08:20 I can see the Frazetta influence in this one.
Thanks a lot
Second
If you just get a penny for everytime you say "again" in your videos 😅
I wish!
Yeah! The idiosyncrasies make the channel so great. Professionally made, and yet so off the cuff. Kind of the way I like my comics.
You use the books and teachings of Andrew Loomis a lot. Would you say that Loomis' stuff has inspired and shaped you a lot? Would you recommend his stuff as a starting point or are there better sources?
Yeah I mention Loomis a lot because I think despite the age of the books and the fact that they have aged in tone and vocabulary , it’s still one of the best set of resources. When I was coming up it was Bridgman or Burne Hogarth, Loomis was not in print any more… I heard a lot of great artists talk about the Loomis books (Alex Ross for example) so when they were scanned and finally reprinted it was like a gold mine.
