Ian Moss, as well as being a truly great guitarist, is one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet, I’ve met Ian a couple of times and he’s a shy person for those that don’t know him….but always interested in talking to people.
You're 1100% right about them being nice guys, I've met them (Ian & Jimmy) several times over the decades and can attest to the fact they are fucking chilled and normal people.
Star Hotel is about a riot that happened in 'Newy' or 'Newcastle. It got out of hand real quick in a time of economic downturn and Newy is is very blue collar working class area built on heavy industry. Jim was still very young and his voice had not fully developed the 'growl' that it has in later years but you can hear it in its infancy in these early songs off the 'east' album era Mossyis someone who is a very natural guitarist. He plays with passion and feeling but let's his playing be the show. It's just how Ian is. He's super smart and the quintessential aussie bloke of few words.
The Star Hotel was very popular with young people in Newcastle, Australia. It was a one of the birthplaces of Aussie Pub Rock. The pub was closing and on the las night a huge crowd turned up; too many people to fit into the pub. The police turned up to disperse the crowd and things got out of hand. The Star Hotel riot.
My comments get deleted when I post links to other youtube videos, so in case the link to wiki gets deleted, here is the details. Star Hotel Riot on Wikipedia has all of the info. Check out the video version that has footage of the actual rioters, it gets pretty serious. One of the other versions has Jimmy Barnes voice with a real angry snarl in it when he says 'Listen, you'd better listen because we are ringing the bell, no deals, we've got nothing to sell.' The band that caused the riots was called the Heroes and the song was The Star and The Slaughter. The lead singer got charged with inciting the riots. It's not a bad song either, and is worth checking out.
Yea Ian is pretty laid back he's from/born in Alice Springs I believe, came down to Adelaide when he was young where Chisel formed & it was a pretty good scene in those days, you had Bon Scott in another Adelaide band called Fraternity playing the same venues as Chisel. Jimmy Barnes actually left Cold Chisel briefly to replace Bon Scott in Fraternity when Bon joined AC/DC.. would've been awesome to be around in those days.
@@dallasfairall1952 haha... I don't even have to look to know which one he is. Seen that footage so many times from watching Chisel's ''Star Hotel'' video.
Another great way to start the day. Chisel does a version of Knocking on Heaven's Door from this venue, and you get to hear Don Walker, on keys sing....that is rare (by himself with this band anyway). As for Mossy I also think he is humble. He is more introvert and Barnsey is just made to be front and centre. I agree that he is a fantastic guitarist and he would sing lead all the time in any other band. He is still touring, but has not had as many hit solo singles as Jimmy.
And after Chisel's version of Bob Dylan's song Knocking on Heaven’s door, try the version from Andy Durants memorial. You may recognise Mossy at the Start singing and playing guitar wearing a black dress shirt (Jimmy is harmonising). Others in the line up included Mick Pealing (lead singer of Stars, for which Andy was part of the band RIP) wearing a blue blazer, Renee Geyer (only female vocalist) RIP, Broderick Smith RIP who has the best growl in the song (he was lead singer of the Dingoes), Richard Clapton wearing a black leather jacket, Billy Rogers in a beige dress shirt, and Glyn Mason wearing a red dress shirt standing with Mossy later in the song. Jimmy is wearing a red T Shirt. When he takes the 🎤 get ready for something special. I watched this every day for a year. There are 2 guitar solos with Mossy and Mal Eastick (from the Stars wearing a denim shirt) and one organ solo. It's got everything. ua-cam.com/video/lPXz4b4sRPM/v-deo.htmlsi=k1n7oDTTGU1rxCeT
I'd like to recommend three great songs by Australian band Baby Animals- "Rush You", "Early Warning" and "One Word". Most Aussie rock fans would be familiar with them.
Mossy has always seemed humble and although I heard some amazing guitar riffs from him, in many styles, I never sensed he was doing it to show off. Some really good guitarists do have moments where they do more than a song requires to show off. As for Jimmy Barnes voice it certainly has more growl to it from getting older. Some songs he can not sing the same as he did in his twenties and just sings them a slightly different way to perform them in his 50's and 60's. I been listening to their concert from about 1982 which titled Rockpalast and done in Germany. Been working and playing the music from that concert in my earbuds. I do not think the singing can get any better than that by him. It just bloody awesome. It crazy how good they sound as a band in that concert but were soon to break up. In your own time you could check it out. I will leave the link where I found it on youtube. ua-cam.com/video/zc3gDLjqZyQ/v-deo.html
You're right about ian moss as a guitar player ..if he was internationally known ,he'd be rated up there with the best ..but sadly he doesn't get recognised outside Australia
I recently remastered and uploaded Ian Moss singing Cry Me A River live at Ringside. It’s absolutely mesmerising- just him and his guitar. I promise you it is a performance that stands out amongst the best he’s ever done.
Ian moss is very humble. I have been watching Chisel since the eightees here in australia and never seen him act inapropriately.

Thanks Greg. I am loving your reactions to all the Aussie gems you've done so far. You obviously have great taste in music.😎 😐
Thanks.

I think it's how people set up their comment section. Mine should have no restrictions. I don't remove comments even when someone calls me an idiot.
Brings back memories 👏
