- Combining a cheap netbook and an iRobot Create, you can create your own video chat robot for around $500 that lets you move around distant places as if you were walking around. These are sometimes known as telepresence robots and cost several thousand dollars.

Imagine being out of town and being able to stroll around your house! This is Brilliant!
This needs to be a thing in 2020!
This will make many military families very happy. Good stuff
I remember seeing you on TED. When you first showed the world how to make a SUPER cheap touch screen on any surface using a Wii Mote. You also showed how by simply, reversing the sensors.. you can make a 3d world that follows your head. You are truly a genius. I love watching your video's.
@VeTutorials No, This is a custom made unit based off of a Netbook, the BBT used a prebuilt unit they bought for massive amounts of money, or more likely rented.
Hi, your robot and a few similar ones are what inspired me to create my robot. Thanks!
his inventions creates inspirations.
Oh yes, this is all I need. My wife goes away on business and she follows me around the house remotely. Gee thanks.
holleeeee sheeeeeit that was awesome. Just the idea was genius, but you even coded stuff to go along with it! I'm impressed.
by jove, it actually sounds like an R2 unit driving away... sweet!
I knew this subscription would pay off someday!
@VeTutorials Yeah but he didn't claim to invent it, he just made it possible for the rest of us to make our own. Personally I would use Google Talk, and a PandaBoard(instead of netbook), But I cant possibly dis this mans awesome work.
wow, i made something like that also using the Vex robotics system (i called it the SkypeBot). One thing i might suggest for the client side: try silverlight. I connected silverlight to skype and made use of the App2App UDP message transfer system to handle drive commands. it worked vary reliably actually, just no autodock
This + that webcam nerf gun thing = PEW PEW
@Henryfabulous Johnny helped work on the Microsoft Kinect. So I suppose you could say he's had a much larger budget and did create something amazing with it.
Great job! Very clear explanation too! Thanks!
At 4:10 I was thinking:
OMG NO! Don't fall!!!!!!
Oh, wait. Right. "Turning"
Johnny Lee you're a champ. keep up the hacks !!
Gave a like for the WASD instead of arrow keys :D
you are a revolutionary in consumer electronics! well done! love your modifications! that could be so handy! where did you get the wide angle lens for the laptop?
You have so many amazing ideas.... starting from wii mote TV tracking (I think its even in 2020 is great idea) and all those other stuff. Someone should get you with all ideas and you productize it to commercial products.
as far as i know he works at Google now so, he's probably making more money than those wiimote displays would ever make him as products :P
There are $100 Android tablets out there (I filmed 200 of them on my channel), someone should make it work with that, save another $150 compared to using a netbook. And if the irobot is mass manufactured, the whole kit should be sold $199 all inclusive. Is Wowee, Parrot or someone else going to release that soon? Android can run full screen Skype and video over SIP and more.
This guy is like one of those over-genial scientists from sci-fi movies (like Iron man) or back to the future, only real :D
This reminds me about Otacon's Metal Gear Mk. II from MGS4.
I really thought the robot was going for the stairs (or what I believe are stairs) at there at the end! :p
I hope you have GPS for when someone grabs this and runs :). This is pretty sweet though. Next, make a robot with hands so I can work on peoples computers in the ways that one must be physically present for. VNC, logmein, only go so far.
@ferociousfrankie
Because then you couldn't charge the wireless camera with everything else. Perhaps a better solution would be to used a wired camera plugged into a computer at the base.
Really nice idea. This is the similar one we did.
You can youtube "Affordable Mobile Videoconferencing".
All the best,
this is insane, well done!
Does the iRobot avoid crashing into obstacles? I imagine you'd probably need some kind of onboard safeguards for when the driver suddenly lags or disconnects.
Great video, Johnny! I've been missing your awesome mod videos lately.
Do you plan to do anything using the Playstation Move or Kinect technology?
Johnny Chung Lee for President!!!
You're so awesome, man! :)
Fantastic video! Thank you for taking the time to make this, very entertaining =D
amazing!
Nice work :).
johnny, you rule
Genius.
4:10 *proceeds to fall down the stair case* CRASH!
Guy on skype: oops... HEY! PUT ME BACK UP PLOX!
t'es vraiment un technofou !
...the beginning reminds me of the saw puppet... :D
Awesome intro! :D
cool stuff bro :)
u're AWESOME!!!!
oh jesus, i almost thought it was gonna take a jump down those stairs at the end...
Tell me you didn't hot wire the docking station to supply 120VAC???
like it very much, though is very funny !
Johnny Lee - do something awesome with the kinect !!!!!!!
does it have to be on the same network to control it?
awesomeness
wow, im glad i didnt unsub
nice
OMG! Watch the stairs :D
gud stuff dude
clever guy
Epic
Is there a way to make these directly from an old roomba?
Now I wanna make one and just walk around the world with an army of Chat robots, I need 100+ people to sit behind their PCs and drive a bot. Oh yes, batteries will die...
Then at the percise moment I will have everyone switch to Nyan Cat video.
NYAN CAT STARE.
would be great if you made the software work on iPod Touch. :D
cool
brillant
Why can't you have a wireless camera binded to a stationary computer using bluetooth.
4:12 I thought you were about to send that thing down that flight of stairs..
now we all just need to worry about stairs, every robots nightmare fuel
do i need to install the software on both laptops or on the one that the robot is using? plz help
Chuck Norris Aproved Finger!
hahaha @ the end of the video
What About a making a silent robot car?
Hi where can I get the c# code that talks to the robot motors through the network thanks.
What about using kinect Camera?
i was wondering why there isn't new vids in years,,,
woah! that's so cool! :D
What if someone goes up staires???
What can you tell us about what you do at Google?
@findcodex I was just thinking that :D
With an actionoiseboard no cloud no server required...
still 500 dollars that is still to much but she is so beast
I think the wii remote touch screen waas better....
are you sheldon cooper?
Can you please share the name of the software please? i wanna make one , thanks
damn...why r u so beast
aren't you afraid that it will fall down?
This reminds me of Sheldon on the Big Bang Theory.
Well we can use skype in Iphone....
What if you hit a shoe while the robot is moving. That laptop would be gone for sure.
Idea property of Sheldon Cooper!
@shriphanip Johnny Lee left Microsoft and is working at Google. Johnny should hack the Nexus S !!
@VeTutorials holy crap. you honestly think this idea came about from a big bang theory episode? if you aren't going to go outside at least google dude.
now just beware of stairs
0:40, MKII MGS4 cutscene anyone???
this is good for stalking
y would i want this??
did gain weight im trying to be mean
the only thing missing is a wallhack
KipKay has got nothing on this guy
