First video of 2021. I’ve had this Victorinox Ranger for 6 years now and have used it quite a bit. It is definitely one of my favorite models of Swiss knife, because it has a lot of useful tools for its size. I added the mini screwdriver to the corkscrew and a Firefly firestarter in place of the toothpick.
Solid! So many people don’t really hard use their victorinox in reviews it’s all this white glove crap. Other than the pliers I really feel like the victorinox tools are much better than my leatherman (other than the pliers)
I shifted from my 8 years old huntsman to this just last year, I must say its little difficult to adjust to added size but I must also add that this is the only swiss knife I'm willing to replace it with. So that's that :3
Thanks Israel! I love the ranger as well. All five back layer tools, very space-efficient. I added the screwdriver to the corkscrew and plus model scales with the pen to mine. Still gotta get a Firefly for it. Thanks for sharing!
Great review and appreciate you showing the Ranger in use. I managed to get one with plus scales added. Good idea replacing the toothpick with the firefly. Overall it’s an excellent all around SAK.
I was on the fence between huntsman and ranger. This video helped sway me towards the ranger. Just got mine yesterday and am upgrading like you with the micro screw driver and ferro. Great video!
Nice video. I just got a Ranger from Victorinox as a gift because they messed up my purchase of a watch purchase gone bad, not once but 3 times. Frustrating as that drawn out process was they made it right by customer service sending me a Ranger to make up for the grief. So Im happy they did that as it speak volumes, they could have just blown me off but they made good. Now I have another swiss army, cant have too many.
I like all my SAK's, but my favorite is my Fieldaster. I may have to check out the Ranger now. Thanks for giving me an excuse to spend more money, lol.
I've got a huntsman in my pocket. Ive got a fieldmaster in my knife drawer. I've got a ranger ordered. I have several other Swiss Army knives including the one hand opening trekker and the rangergrip78. it appears that they are addictive
Swiss Ranger fan here, I have three. My original one was from Scouts and now lives in the car. I put plus scales on the pile side. A second one lives in my daypack which attaches to a guides pack so the knife is always with me in the backcountry whether dayhike or extended trip. I put green plus scales on it and replaced the toothpick with a firestarter. The third one has camo plus scales and has the firestarter and pen. It lives in the safe but is carried on occasion. A Vic Explorer with saphire plus scales is part of my edc rotation. Cool video, thank you.
It would be nice if more offerings had the writing utensil. I never carry a pen with me, I just assume there will always be one around 😂. I should actually be keeping golf pencils for edc and bushcraft
I don’t really think of a sak as a knife. I like the pen blade, me and my kids carved a pumpkin using the pen blade. The pen blade has more application than I ever could have realized.
I agree, made this comment many years ago. Carry this and a small 4 inch vice grip. Unstopable can fix anything. File and chisel are great. Also note the file edge is serated and cut like a mini hacksaw.
Great review, as always. Happy New Year! Like you, I like swiss knives but edc a Rebar. Dude, host a WAJK channel contest and give away that arrow-shank!
Bought my first Vic. in 1977, is a cross between Hunter and Ranger. Three set of handles later I still have it. I also like the alox Cadet, Cadett plus, and Cadet plus 2 I think they call them, cadet with saw and two blades.Swiss Bianco had these made in very limited numbers.
My first one was a Wenger Traveler, had to order it from a catalogue back then and since it was a travel catalogue that was the only model they offered :] Must have been around 1984.
I have several Swiss Army Knives, but this one seems to have all the most essential tool choices. I’ve bought this one based on this review and you were spot on. If you could only have one Swiss Army Knife for overall uses, this is the best choice. For a more minimal choice, I like the Recruit.
Because of this video is why i got Ranger 3 months ago. Changed scales with white plus one and now its in my pocket all the time. All the tools You will ever need. Sometimes i think what would Macgyver do if he had one😁
Excellent, now you know why this is my favorite model overall. A Ranger is right up there with an Estwing Carpenter's Hatchet and a Klein Electrician knife as blades everyone should own.
I was thinking of possibly getting the Ranger in the future (first I'm getting a RangerGrip and a Classic), as it seems to be one of the cheapest models with scissors, wood saw and metal file/saw. I think that they should've replaced the toothpick with a diamond blade-sharpening tool in that slot for this model (and other models if they choose). This would be a good addition (I bet 99% of the population would agree), as I heard Victorinox uses a softer steel on their blades, so sharpening in the field would be nice to have built within certain (or all?) models. There's room to put another slot or two in there, I'm sure. :) I do know of the pen-sized blade sharpener that Victorinox sells but, having it built into the knife itself would be great as backup, at the least. Being a newbie-novice to knife sharpening (and multitools) myself, I just bought a cheap beginner tool: the Lansky Blade Medic for $10 on Amazon. The diamond rod, at the tip, looks even thinner than what would fit in the toothpick slot of a 91mm SAK! So it surely can be done, if they try! Do you know of the 'trick' where you can use a 1/4" square to 1/4" hex adapter with some of the SAK bottle openers? Pretty cool! I learned of this by watching one of Nikos Doulas NikGyver videos; one of his Swiss Army Knife 'hack' videos.
Ive been subbed to you for over a decade im sure and your transformation is crazy! Keep it up! Also rum is the bodybuilders natural or nons best friend when they need to drink ;) Like a pirate 🏴☠️ yee always need a bottel of RUM ☠️ haha keep up the great videos man! Maybe one day i’ll make a video of my knife collection and tag you!
Does that fire steel work to start fires with the tools of knives in the knife? I love these Swiss Army Knives. I have 2 about this size and a few of the really small ones.
Great video, thanks. I have been thinking about getting a Ranger SAK to replace my Handyman SAK. But it is just to small. It does have a chisel and metal saw going for it but my Handyman is only little bigger and has the plyers so I will just keep using it. I have passed all limits and EDC the Swiss Champ XLT SAK. Plus with that I EDC on my person the Alox Harvester, Handyman, Evowood s557, Midnite Mini Champ. 🔪
Yes. I also have had SAK'S since being a kid. Remember when I upgraded to a Huntsman. Having a saw was a big deal after mainly having Boy Scout knives, camp style knives, and regular smaller SAK's. I like having every kind of blade and / or tool SAK'S has to offer for my EDC. I just received my smallest SAK today to add to my EDC. The Excelsior with its 1" & 2" cutting edge combo knife. My first SAK with blades only, no tools unless you count the key ring. Real gentleman's knife. I put a micro paracord lanyard on it so it does not get lost in my hand, as it's so small. A good whittling blade, I do think.
I have several thicker SAKs, but the Ranger remains my favourite in terms of sizing - It's pretty much as thick as it is wide, which is about as thick as you'd want to go for carrying and holding. Several other popular 91mm SAKs have fewer layers but still have this same ratio of dimension. I'd agree with your remark about the pliers, but only because Leatherman's smaller pliers are generally better than Victorinox's. I prefer to avoid carrying a second tool, so generally use my Handyman but still miss my Squirt PS4... Unfortunately I also need the in-line Phillips (oreferably with the magnifier), so a modified Swiss Champ is pretty much the ideal tool-set, albeit with annoying dimensions.
I would prefer the pliers to the scissors, cuz my Klein electrician scissors go everywhere with me in my truck. I don’t carry my multitools in my pocket. The only tru edc for: phone, wallet, keys which I have a 3” mini pry and a Stanley 3” tape measure which is super tiny and I use more than I ever thought I ever could.
Yeah I usually include the pliers because you never know when you might need to go to work on some homes around here with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch 🔥🔥🔥

@@formermpc10 I carry it there as a safety back up should I for example, flip my canoe and lose everything I will still have a way to start a fire. The reason I have this idea is a couple years ago we were on a canoe trip in northern Ontario, Canada in May, and the water was still very cold. Some friends that I was canoeing with went out fishing. They flipped their canoe and everything they had in the boat at the time was lost. They had to swim in freezing, cold, big lake in cold water they had no survival gear on them. That is when I began to lanyard my Swiss Army knife to my belt, so that I will always have it if I spilled, I would say it is more of a back up item then an every day use item that fire steel in the ToothPic slot
Great video! I EDC the Huntsman, that model have really good set of tools. Farmer X is good slim alternative to Huntsman. I was always puzzled with the need for small blade, what good is it for? Opening letters, OK, but in the field?
Back in the day, penknives we for sharpening a writing quill, but as time went on they just stuck around for small things or maybe if the main blade gets messed up. They should make the small blade a different shape though, like a sheepfoot for utility. Some models replace the small blade with a nail cleaner and file, but the big file on this can do those duties.
Happy New Year! If you made a shank out of persimmon wood, it could be very thin and sharp because the wood is so hard. It is really beautiful wood, too.
This one didn't take long enough for the buzz :] UA-cam doesn't like us to say, but I could get to you in about 2 hours, sounds like a pretty scenic town.
Hey bro if you like victorinox knives, check out the ranger grip 57 on amazon, the cross is a button you push to fold the knife the a closed position, really nice for 50 some dollars.
I am a big fan of swiss army knives, that being said I was very disappointed to find that there files are not hard enough to maintain tool steel like you would find in a camp ax I know the files have changed steels over the years so maybe the older ones were a harder steel, but my understanding is the stainless ones will not work on harder steel like i would want them too. Love my SAK's and if you like a good value check the FX350 pocket Knife from Coast [yes the flashlight company] bought mine for $22.00 a couple years ago, liked it so well bought an other one.
You speak the truth, I know, because I have the coast knife :D I did a review of it, it's a very old review about 7 years old (damn youtube for not showing promoting it much anymore), but it is a great value knife.
The victorinox pliers can't be compared to a leatherman plier based tool... not for the same use... the 91mm victorinox pliers are big tweezers, you don't use them like you use a leatherman... i don't understand why people keep comparing them....
True. But I reckon the Ranger paired with a Knipex Cobra, or small Knipex combination pliers, would be better than any Leatherman. The scissors and saw on Victorinox 91mm and 93mm knives are better than on any Leatherman, file is about the same. But a forged pair of pliers will always be intrinsically stronger than any multitool pliers, where there is a weak point at the point where the plier head joins the handles.
Thanks for sharing this with us my favorite is the victorinox fieldmaster it's a outstanding allrandr edc because im not a big fan of the corkscrew on the back I like the driver much more I know you can put the I glass driver in the corkscrew but still I like the driver much more than the corkscrew in my opinion it's much more useful unless it's the Swiss champ that has the online driver but I still like my favorite more the victorinox fieldmaster in my opinion it's the best allrandr edc I'm looking into the farmer x but I might miss my back tool's ill have to see about that one anyway thanks again for sharing this with us happy new year👍
Lordy but I need some help here. It seems to me that the most dangerous thing is a dull knife in the kitchen but the second most dangerous thing is a slip joint knife. Any slip joint knife. I just can't wrap my head around why anybody would want one within 30 feet of them. But, I need a touch Stone here to see if I'm completely off base. Why in God's name would anyone want a slip joint knife instead of a locking blade? Asking for a friend. 😂
I think a lot of places have laws against locking blades, especially over there in Europe. However, Victorinox does have some locking models, like the Evolution S series, and their long models all have locking blades.
Whats wrong with the slipjoint? It's not meant for heavy duty usage or self-defense, but for cutting salami or cheese. Maybe the best comparison would be like comparing cars: "slipjoints are stick shift, locking knives are automatic". You just need to know more to use it (safely). I also own some locking Victorinox knives, but they are illegal to carry in most of Europe (all of Europe?)
Yeah I was almost with you definitely the original multi tool but unfortunately they still have that stupid corkscrew , really? You know why leatherman and all that became popular? Because real men don't need no damn corkscrew!!! (NOT that my favorite knife ninja, isn't a real man)

The scissors and saw on Victorinox 91mm and 93mm knives are better than on any Leatherman, file is about the same. But a forged pair of pliers will always be intrinsically stronger than any multitool pliers, where there is a weak point at the point where the plier head joins the handles.
I... Need... Ranger!!!
That's the spirit!
You lost a lot of weight. Good job
Thanks, brother!
The ranger is my favourite 😭😭😭💔
It was snowing here
Here, too bro! Northeast!
Thank You.
Welcome!
Ranger or Handyman?
I prefer the Ranger.
Yeah you could open mail or peel an apple. Or you could SHANK A FOOL with it!!!!! ⬅️ My first shank-a-fool of 2021! 💪💪💪
It is definitely shaping up to be a year of stacking bodies.
I prefer the wire garrote, or the karambit. Up close and personal in their face.
Metal File Perfect
Please do more SAK videos they all in German or Spanish... yours hopefully in US English...lol...
Thanks for sharing this with us my favorite is the victorinox fieldmaster it's a outstanding allrandr edc because im not a big fan of the corkscrew on the back I like the driver much more I know you can put the I glass driver in the corkscrew but still I like the driver much more than the corkscrew in my opinion it's much more useful unless it's the Swiss champ that has the online driver but I still like my favorite more the victorinox fieldmaster in my opinion it's the best allrandr edc I'm looking into the farmer x but I might miss my back tool's ill have to see about that one anyway thanks again for sharing this with us happy new year👍
Richard Dean Anderson put SAKs in Millions of pockets =))
Indeed! He often used the Tinker.
Nice overview, WAJK 👍 How can I reach you by email?
(NOT that my favorite knife ninja, isn't a real man)
Aww, don't you want to tour the wine country with your Swiss knife LOL
