  • @johnbyrne1258
    @johnbyrne1258 4 роки тому

    Dennis a little trick for you is row up the grass and leave it for the couple of days after cutting. It will dry out way faster see the wind can get through the row instead of lying flat on the ground. Same principle as drying clothes I suppose. Sometimes you might have to do twice if it’s a real heavy crop. That’s how we do it in Ireland when you’re lucky to get 3 days of dry weather!! Love the videos the pure raw farmer view is awesome.

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  4 роки тому +1

      Actually I've tried that and it won't dry hardly at all. If the sun can't get to it, it just stays wet. I've had the best luck spreading it wide and thin with a Tedder. Rye takes a long time no matter what you do that why most people just chop it.

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  4 роки тому

      Yeah sometimes you can't avoid it when you have to do a burn down or get a lot of weeds but usually I avoid it. I wonder if all the people that want their hay 100 percent weed free realize how much chemical has to be sprayed on the hay to make that happen.

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  4 роки тому +1

      To steep for that to work around here. Normally you have to back the baler up a long ways to find a valley or a spot flat enough that the bales won't roll away.

    I’d grow more orchardgrass, I sell so much of it. Quality bales are always in high demand but so many people grow alfalfa. To much competition.

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  4 роки тому

      I like orchard grass the best too, that and Timothy. I hate messing with alfalfa it's a pain but my main customer like to have a little for foaling. Nobody around here sells alfalfa either so it is in high demand. I'm only doing about 9 acres.

    • @zfilmmaker
      @zfilmmaker 4 роки тому +1

      I like alfalfa and have made good money from it for years, but two seasons ago we had all that relentless rain and I couldn’t cut it when I needed and was out thousands of dollars. There’s no subsidy for that around me, only crops which alfalfa doesn’t qualify. I learned a value lesson that year how vulnerable that market is to bad weather. I lost a little money on orchardgrass but I just mowed it and recovered relatively quick but that wasn’t the case with alfalfa. I had similar losses that year on chopped corn. Man, I hope we don’t have another season like that anytime soon.
