A tip, take it with a grain of salt. A way to find out the owner of a local Pontianak. You might need to take some extra steps to be able to see it first.
Make two freshly make hard boiled eggs. Stand near the edge of a forest or bushy area at sun down, and wait for Azan that announce it's Maghrib praying time. Hold out your arm while holding out the two hard boiled eggs, and hid your other hand behind your back with a scissor. Supposedly a pontianak will appear and start to devour the eggs by licking it with her very long tongue. Cut off the tongue with the scissor, and the pontianak will flee. Allegedly, tomorrow morning if someone suddenly spoke weirdly (like their tongue is hurt), that's the owner of said pontianak.

5:13 my aunt mayyyybbbbeeee seen one penanggal in it’s fireball form in her youth. She was watching the night sky from my granddad’s house with one of those large traditional kampung’s window then she saw light source so she taught it’s a light bug so she kept watching then suddenly the fireball just fly straight to her at lightning speed & she fainted.she proceeded to have heavy fever for a week. Based on my experience on Reddit, I believe that this was just a troll comment
Pontianak also has an interesting lore to the capital of West Kalimantan's name which also Pontianak (the city that I'm currently live).
Basically, The Sultan kept hearing woman crying on his palace but can't find the source, and as thing goes on, finally concluded it was a paranormal attack, he decided to kind of light a cannon to shoo her away and it worked.
This was immortalized as the origin of the capital's name. As far as I remember.
But Indonesian still refer to her as Kuntilanak
wrong story dawg. They WERE actually haunted by Pontianak, until he had enough and fired cannons into the forest (where the Pontianak resides) and chopped the trees down to build a mosque with the wood. City was named Pontianak after.

That's interesting! I loved looking at my dad's atlas when I was a kid and that city seemed really fascinating to me which ofc bc of its name and its position which is almost right on top of the equator.

Pontianak in Malaysia and Indonesia is the ghost of a woman who gave birth. But in the Philippines, we have an urban legend for unborn child or a child who died on birth and we call them TIYANAK. I can see how related our urban legends are.

How to defeat these monsters
1. Don’t go looking for it
I'd like to share two paranormal stories from my encounters during my National Service in 2015.
At the semi-ripe age of 19, this was my first encounter with the paranormal. The encounter happened during a night navigation exercise (NAVEX) on a Thursday evening, a forested area near the Mandai Executive Public Golf Course, when I was a cadet in the Specialist Cadet School (SCS), Foxtrot company in 2015. This recount is shared with 160 others who attended the exercise. Disclaimer: Upon 10, this story probably scores 2.5 for scariness but 10/10 for authenticity.
As with all army exercises, before starting the exercise, we had to attend a conducting brief. This briefing will cover safety protocols, the exercise objective, and equipment checks. Typically, the conducting brief is given by a Platoon Commander (PC), who is the ka kia to the Officer Commanding (OC) but for this particular exercise, the OC himself did it. But what made this conducting brief particularly unusual was what our OC said at the end, in a slightly elevated tone while looking at the surrounding trees as if he wasn't addressing us: 'We are here to complete an exercise, not to disturb nature or cause disruption. We'll be here for just four hours before returning to camp.' He then looked back at us and said, "Respect nature, and nature will leave you alone. Let's do this well and safely so we can pang gang and head back."
We entered the navigation area in sections of 7 people and was dispatched in single files every 15 minutes to a 1-way upslope road that leads to the place, a pitch-black forested area; those who completed their objective will come back from the same road. My section was one of the last to go and in army there are two kinds of people during waits like this. One being the type that can sleep anywhere, in any f-ed up position that will baffle any highly cultivated yogi, men with zero standards to quality of life. I belong to the latter, the kind that would keep entertained with situational questions and indulge in talks about things that don’t matter. Being a 5 month old soldier during the time when this happened, I also transcended from asking beta situations like “what if later we do headcount check and kena number 8”. Limpei play shoot shag marry with candidates like Pontianak, NekNek koropok and Hantu TekTek. Sometimes to kill more time and drag the dilemna, we’ll swap one of the candidates with the encik that we dislike most. Sorry I digressed.
So finally it was my sections’ turn to do the NAVEX and as I walked up that road of dreadness, from a distance I saw the section that completed theirs and was walking back down. I did a rough estimation on our walking paces and deduced it will take about 12 seconds for us to meet. With the 12 seconds, I was mentally planning to ask strategic questions that would give my section the needed advantage when doing the exercise and on top of that, to also critically understand that I only have 3-seconds walk-pass time. But shit happens and life doesn’t go as planned sometimes. We eventually met, I was like ‘eh ya’ll got Hor lan anot”. The section responded hastily with “Shh, eh bro don’t ask so much now. Not the time”. Sensing the vibe was off, my senses heightened and I was trying to draw answers from what does “not the time” meant. As we passed each other in parallel, I saw this guy (let’s call him Dong) with his back arched downwards, heads down and palms covering his ears. Whispering words of “Please stop” and “I don’t want” while his section mate was carrying his rifle and holding him by the collar. This scenario motivated me to complete the NAVEX swiftly and get back to the assembly point to find out what happened. The section and I did complete the exercise quickly as planned but again, life reminded me. Shit happens. I was told that Dong had been sent back to camp in advance. So I went for the next best option, asking around for 2nd party recounts of what happened but I ended up with 3 different versions.
1. He was possessed by some forest spirit
2. He saw a Pontianak
3. He saw a pocong
Which made me both concerned about Dong and horny for the actual happening. Long story short, I got back to camp and asked Dong what happened. Of course, I’m not a low-EQ, unsympathetic kaypo that has excessive informational thirst to satisfy. I waited till he was calmed down and is willing to share the story. Here’s what he told me:
When he walked up the sloped road, Dong heard strange giggles up in the trees and a swarm of whispers to what made out to be ‘He’s here’. According to him, he have always been sensitive to spirits so he took it with a pinch of salt and braced himself for paranormal encounters as he really wanted to complete the exercise. Since he knew that the place is not “clean”, he also constantly reminded the section to lower down their volume and stay on track. But just after he said that, one of his section mate (lets’ call him Ding) started hurling vulgarities from the environmental discomforts of low vision, prickly twigs and humidity. Then they met with a bushy area that impeded their planned route and the team despite protest from Dong, decided to bash through it by breaking through its branches. That was when he felt a sudden influx of bad energy and started hearing eerie screams from the trees. He did not look up fearing that he would see ‘something’ and stayed close to the section. The section then completed their objective and was doing an equipment check before exiting the forest, Ding sounded off that he lost his map; a classified army item that is serialised. It was also in that exact moment when Dong hear the voices from the trees that whispered “come back”. At this moment, he was caught with dilemma, because he knew the spirits were targeting him but the section will have to backtrack into the forest to find the misplaced map. He mustered up courage and stayed with the team for the search which they eventually found the map by a small stream that strangely was 30 metres off from their planned route which neither of the section members recalled walking pass. As they walk back to exit the forest, Dong heard the voices again, “come back, come back”. But this time it was more aggressive and it gets louder. He took a peek up at the trees and saw multiple white human-like figures sitting on the branches and beckoning him over. That was when it got too overwhelming for him and then all of a sudden he couldn’t feel his legs and dropped to ground on his knees. In that instant, he regretted his choice of looking up and lost all will of trying to dismiss the spiritual presence. He clenched his eyelids down and covered his ears as tight as he could. That was when one of his section mate took his rifle, pull him up by the collar and walked out the forest. Then brings us back to the scene of me asking them “eh ya’ll got Hor Lan anot”.
The next morning, the CO addressed the situation and I quote (about 96% accuracy) “I’ve been in the army for close to 30 years now and what happened to Dong yesterday, which I know most of you already know, is not unusual. But I’m glad all of us completed the exercise safely and all of us got back to camp safely. So again, I want to remind everyone. There are certain rules we ought to follow and we must always remain respectful to the territory to which we are guest in. What happened yesterday at the forest, stays at the forest. I do not wish this to be spread around.”
But ya, even the longest NDA term is 5 years. Now 9 years have already past. So I’m sharing this story.

I'm really familiar with Tuyul (that's how we call it in Indonesia). You spread flour on the floor if you want to know if your house has a tuyul in it or not and tuyul is a very malevolent creature, can be used to haunt & attack a household. Back in my elementary school days, I had this one good friend, my mom and his always called each other on daily basis, chatting about stuff but starting one day, they stopped calling each other and the strange thing is I don't even realize it until she got a call from my friend's mom that her house was being attacked by tuyul & the culprit was the maid that had been together with them before my friend was even born.

Hi! Fellow Pontianak citizen here, born and raised, (yes it's a real town! Pontianak is in Kalimantan Barat or West Borneo, one of the biggest islands in Indonesia, and bordering with our Borneo part of Malaysian people; and before we start, this is not meant to belittle the information he gave, more like an addition because I've been to some haunted places w my family (and experienced them) due to my father's work back then) the ghost in Indonesia famously known more as kuntilanak than pontianak. As for to repelling the ghost, one of the known methods here is by lighting up meriam karbit, that i kid you not, once lit up could be heard from even a place that takes 15-25 minutes drive from my house, and meriam karbit now oftentimes used during Eid Fitri event ^^
One of the ways to know whether she's close or far from you, is if you hear a laughter from far, it means she's close and vice versa. To avoid it? Well, either you run or say some prayers (in Islam there are prayers to avoid and protect one self from creatures like this and supposedly other religions too) because my dad ever heard it when he had to "go" in a middle of nowhere, on our way to his another project somewhere in west borne and that place was a literal dense jungle, even on daytime it's eerie and one has to proceed w caution because there are reasons why legends exist and to respect to the "people" who stay there.
And he's right! Not only frangipani flowers, but oftentimes more specifically the smell of jasmine flowers, if u smell it, usually we'll just say "you smell that? Okay, pray and walk briskly to the exit" you DON'T ever talk abt it or ask more questions abt it. You smell, see, hear smth that's off? Run, don't say anything. Don't die like the white people in horror movies who got way too curious and meet their ends.
What i mentioned are methods more known to my place, as i just knew that there are also other ways to repel kuntilanak and to know if she's there or not by a mimic of a baby's cry.

I think the person who tells that toyol can grow from green peas seems like misremembered, green peas don't grow toyols but it will invites toyol to come and distract them from doing its job, the toyols will try to count the scattered green peas and when it does they will be easily captured
My grandpa told me that he thinks he saw a toyol once, as when it was maghrib, the time in islam where usually people must be at home, he saw a little boy playing his bicycle. My grandpa check the time and looked back at the boy, he told the boy, "eh, boy, go back home. Maghrib already, later got something follow you. Where your parents ah?" The boy answered, "i don know where my parents. I don know where my home." Then the boy jusy cycled away, and my grandpa was so confused he was like 'WHAT THE FRICK?!!! THIS BOY CRAZY AH' my grandpa say in his head. Then, the boy just vanished in thin air. Till this day, my grandpa still doesnt know who that boy is, because he seemed familiar to my grandpa, but couldnt make it out. There is a history of miscarriages in my fathers side tho.
Well my father had a simmilar experience but with a tall women (face covered by hair) floating outside his window and he couldnt move till she vanished and he felt cold
Also acording to malay folklore after a "ghost" vanishes and you feel cold it might be sitting on you

Actually, pontianak and kuntilanak is similiar origin but different. Like both are same famili, but different species.
Kuntilanak often associated with the sound of chick, if you can hear the sound clear and loud, it mean she's far from you, and if you heard it like from far away, it mean she's close.
Also, the kuntilanak appearance is often associated with the smell of jasmine flower.
And last, kuntilanak doesn't associated with banana trees, in indonesia pocong more associated with banana tree, while kuntilanak is associated with bamboo, banyan tree, and river.
The same but kinda diilfferent culture in indonesia and malaysia plays a big part in both of the legend of lady in white.

About the Penanggalan, I heard of another story from True Singapore Ghost Stories about a neighbor whose wife never aged and at first no one knows why, but the husband and village folks eventually found out when the police found her headless body leaning against the wall but no blood splatters in the room where the body was found.
Apparently she made a deal with the devil to be a Penanggalan to maintain her youthful looks by detaching her head and entrails from her body every night to find children to suck their blood, but one fateful night something happened and she couldn't return. So yeah, there seems to be another way to defeat it other than destroying the body, just that the rituals and/or procedures are unknown.
Theres basically a word that to defeat them you can just trap them somewhere until morning comes, when they cant comeback fast enough, they just die because of sunlight, something like that

My mother's friend encountered the headless japanese soldier. She was studying in her dorm in the middle of the night. Suddenly, she heard someone saying outside of her window beside her "Hey or hello Are you studying for maths?" (I don't remember what did it said) then she replied to it "Yes, I'm studying for maths". The window beside her is not a balcony is just straight up a window. After she studied, she thought to herself. "Who am I talking to?". My mom said that she might encountered a heaadless japanese soldier because her school was used to be a hospital during the war.

to ease everyone's discomfort, ghost stories are usually meant to scare people from doing evil/dumb things. also ghost stories are often used to cover heinous act from easily detected, as people are just THAT willing to believe in superstitious. I'm not saying they aren't real, but sometimes its better to investigate before jumping to blame everything on ghost.

I also thought the same thing until you had personal experience with this type of things. One time when we went on a trip, our car just suddenly moved very slow. At first, everyone thought the car just malfunctioning but it won't be that much of a problems since we have friends that we can call to fix it or just pick us up first. But on that night, things just feels.. off....
Instead of having the engine malfunction, the car feels really heavy. The level of anxiety, worried and feeling cold is everywhere. As if something is watching us. But we keep on driving to find suitable place to stop until my sister starts acting weird. She start crying and screaming for some reasons despite being in a good mood minutes ago. She said there's something above the car.
We don't trust her at first but we also felt off since we suddenly felt anxious despite the road we use is pretty lit up and there's some house we can see near the road from time to time. Then suddenly we realised there's some long hair we can see outside from the back window of the car. The hair fall down slowly longer and longer from above the car. So we decide to just stop near a mosque and pray.
After we done, we drive the car again and it functions properly without any problems like earlier and it feels more lighter. So it's definitely a weird experience.💀

I’ve met 1 gumanthong before at my aunts new house in Malaysia he was one of the nicer ones he liked to stay and play in the house especially when I visit, but recently my aunt had to chase him away because he was making everybody in the house sick and I do believe that he stays with a family in the neighbourhood ( he knows I can see him)

I got a story about toyol. Happened many years ago. My mum realized her money kept missing. Not alot but she noticed. This is the modus operandi of toyols. They don't take big amount to make it less obvious. None of us, her children, took it coz we are already working adults. It also happened that 1 of my uncles know about exorcism and stuff. He came and took a look and sensed something was not right. After saying prayers and and stuff, not long after he finished the next door neighbour was heard slamming their door open and screamed/shouted at something. That was a sign the toyol belonged to them. After that she did not have any money disappeared. I wasn't around to witness, this was told by my mum later. i grew up in Thailand, it's really interesting how closely resemble SEA folklore is.
Pontianak we called them "ผีตายทั้งกลม"(P̄hī tāy thậng klm) they essentially are the same thing, but they reside in the place where they die(usually depicted in the house) just leave them alone and pretend you don't see or know anything and you'd fine, we also have urban legend about ghost that's resides in banana tree(called Nang Thani), however, that ghost is more one the fairy/spirit type of things they aren't exactly hostile toward human, but they can kill you.
we called Penanggalan as "Krasue" a little different is that, the woman who practice black magic doesn't "pay the price" they just practice it incorrectly and those black magic went into themselves and turn into Krasue.

It's reminded me working a resort deep in rainforest. I literally did smell the frangipani flower during 5pm after I finished my works. I HATE returning back during 11pm after unpaid overtime. So creepy passing to the worker quarters. FYI the resorts had some Islamic graves hidden among the bushes next to the restaurant.

In Thailand, in the old days, frangipani trees were mostly grown in temples, hardly in any households. We called the trees "Lantom" which means "sorrow." That's why nobody wanted to plant them in their house. Until around twenty years ago, the frangipani trees were officially called "Leelawadi" which is a beautiful name (I'm not sure about the meaning.) So you can now see frangipani trees in people's houses too. BTW, I don't recall any relation between frangipani and ghost.
During my mom’s time, women who got pregnant would keep something sharp in their bags to ward off the Pontianak. This was obviously a Malay and Indo culture, not religious in any way.

I have a slight feeling I have encountered a toyol. This happened 2 years ago, me and my older brother were left home alone. I had piano class the next day so I was practicing piano in my piano room. when suddenly, I felt something crawling on my back. It was sort of light weight aswell. I was shocked and a little bit creeped out, but since the country I live in is really hot and has a lot of bugs I thought maybe it was just a spider crawling on my back. So I rubbed my back getting the "bug" away.
What I heard was if u suspect a toyol stole from your house, spread green beans around the home, when the toyol sees it, it will want to count or play with the beans and forget that it was supposed to steal.

One way to prevent tuyul (toyol) to steal your money is to flip your money against each other, for example don’t have the drawing facing the same way, so if your money have different drawing on each side just cris Cross them. That way the toyol is confuse. And won’t take the money.

One scary story about Pontianak (or in Indonesia, known as Kuntilanak) that I know of:
It's said that the smell of a newborn baby will attract the interest of Kuntilanak and Kolong Wewe. Therefore, one belief in Asia (especially among the Muslim majority) is to put Ayatul Kursi around the baby's neck. This will protect the baby but will not deter Kuntilanak's presence.
One night, a mother, after she went to the loo, came back to her bedroom quickly because her baby was crying in the crib. To her surprise, a Kuntilanak was standing and chanting a song for the baby. The mother saw that the Kuntilanak couldn't touch her baby because she had placed the Ayatul Kursi. However, the mother was so scared that she recited "Astaghfirullah" (I seek forgiveness from God), one of the common prayers recited when seeing something unpleasant, while closing her eyes. After a while, the Kuntilanak's noise was no more. The mother opened her eyes only to find that the Kuntilanak was in front of her, chanting "Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah" while laughing and dangling its head. The mother screamed and passed out. Later that night, after her husband came home, the mother told him what happened, and the husband called the Imam for cleansing

Here, in Indonesia, there's same story about Toyol or Tuyul here, that related with green peas, well it actually not a pea but mung bean, but it's not to summoning or "growing" Toyol, but to avoiding them to stealing our money, the legend said Toyol can't count more than 10, so some elder said if we throw away or scattered around mung bean or green peas around the floor, Toyol will count it, because they can't count more than 10, they will recounting the peas so the forgot to steal our money, the other things to prevent them also included kids toys, mirror and yuyu or freshwater crab, Toyol love to play with those items and it will distracted them

During my grandparent's time both of my grandma and grandpa was living in (back then) Kampong Pasir Panjang. The villagers at that time were living peacefully when all of a sudden there was a case of people losing their money from all over the village. Even by grandparent's lost their money around $2 (b4 inflation) like every week. Eventually the villagers gathered and had a meeting, and came to a conclusion that it was probably a toyol that was stealing the money. So one day during the *Maghrib* time the villagers placed some money and candy on the floor and waited behind bushes and houses for the toyol to take it. Eventually there really was a toyol taking the money and candy but before it manage to run off to its master my grandfather and the villagers caught it with a fishing net. To find out who the master was, the villagers threatened to cut the right ear of the toyol as inflicting pain to it will reflect the damage to its master. They were counting down satu, dua, tiga and right before they cut it, the master eventually admit's that it was his toyol. The villagers then banished him off the kampong and he was never to be seen again
