These are great little instruments - I played slide for years, and this little thing taught me a few lessons - and, with this up-grade - it travels well. Opens doors. Not all of CBG is about building.
good tip. im gonna try to recess a humbucker into the body.
Thanks for the video. I just purchased an upgrade from my first CBG, and I've been on several CBG channels here, so everything CBG is coming my way!
In my searching over the past two weeks, I've seen the CBG kit in this video in several other videos. Most had the same complaints, the biggest being the cheapness of the box itself, with the top delaminating and peeling off.
I feel if it's capable of producing a decent sound, spraying the box like he did here is a good way to go. Not many quality CBGs at this price point from what I've seen.
I'm planning on replacing mine with a real cigar box, I'm going to use the old box for temples for the sound holes and neck pocket, great video and idea, thanks 👍..
Hi i bought the cheapo and i love it !i take it everywhere and just jam on it, i don't have to worry about bringing my vintage charvel out. You knew what you were getting with the $34.99 Amazon cost, and. its really not that bad. Im teaching my 10 year old on it. He loves it!!! Andcthey look cool just sitting around.....
Just fantastic
Good idea. I've been thinking about purchasing one, and If I do, this is a must.
Good thinking! My first upgrade was replacing the strings, since the ones it comes with are not great.
Thank you
Thanks for creating the video. I have a Hinkler Ukulele which is similar to the Cigarbox but with four tuners and frets. I've been thinking of ditching the box and fit a tin can.
I have the Ukulele too, it is probably more useful than the 3-string. but the slide guitar is kinda novel
@@joetspaulding I haven't started my conversion yet. The ukulele version also has frets on the neck too.
I see you live in Hawaii. I do too. About 12 miles south of Hilo on the big island.
Did plug the sound holes?
Bought one of these to start learning while I budget out and collect the tools and materials to build one if I decide I like it. I hear it serves the purpose and being a great entry into cbgs without needing to invest the time and sweat into building a decent one. Look forward to learning and I am even more excited to get around to building one down the road! I hear people suggest replacing the strings often, any suggestions on decent replacements? Also any suggestions on a budget friendly amp that will go with better cbgs down the line?
Christian long way. Warning about cbg's. Its additive. I'm getting ready on build #6.
this was my first. then I built one, then I bought one, videos on my channel
Good idea, did you do the neck also?
Just a light coat, not as much as the box.
That's probably a better and cheaper approach than mine, on my last project I coated it with Tru oil
I would like to try Tru oil on some project in the future but never seem to be able to find it here in Hawaii and they don't seem to ship it either. One of these days ill find some. cheers
Get a Pardon 2000 box for a replacement
Headstock too cramped. To cheap to give you the extra 2-3 inches to space tuners properly
sometimes an extra 2-3 inches makes a big difference!
Personally I didn't like the cardboard sound box and the tuners are dodgy as they have no ferrules. I returned mine and got a refund. Bought a proper one with the refund money plus quite a bit extra. However it did turn me on to CBG`s and I would say the booklet and DVD are probably worth at least as much as the actual instrument. The instructional booklet is excellent for a beginner and if push came to shove, the neck and pickup could be salvaged for a home made one which I would recommend replacing the shitty cardboard box with a genuine wooden cigar box and re sight the mic closer to the sound holes. Over all I wouldn't recommend anyone paying full price for this but if it shows up in the bargain bin for 10 dollars? yea! It's worth that for the parts and booklet
5$
Horrible craftmanship. Cheap box. Cheap tuners. Cheap strings. Everything needs replacing. Just buy one from someone that makes cigar box Guitars.
Lol, it was $30 and i bought it for the fun of putting it together and a little decoration for my music room. I’m happy and don’t need a better one. Thanks for letting me know though, do you have a nice one ? Where did you get yours and what did you pay?
Haha, yup everything was cheap, actually the whole thing was cheap. That $30 probably covered the cost of the glass slide and the CD. Where you expecting rosewood body with seymour duncan pu's? I think it was just meant to be fun, and motivate you to build a nice high quality CBG!
It kinda makes me giggle a little bit when I hear complaints about the quality of this CBG - when you Google what the real original CBGs looked like this one is quite posh really! A 1920s player would think the Hinkler is a bit up market!
Lol, expecting a Gibson custom shop for $29.99!
Hi. I bought the BBC and then upgraded to one from eBay by a guy named weekly house. After that I bought a custom one from a guy in Atlanta where I am from. The weekly house cbg was a huge step up. Probably about $100 now plus $15 shipping. Make sure you get a wooden box. Then the custom 1 was a big upgrade from the weekly house cut.
