I owned a 62 SG back in the late 60s early 70s that I loved. I was hired to fill in with a band and my cut was $50 and it was in Malibu. After our first set I put my guitar in the standard Stage stand to get a drink. Just when I turned away a gust of wind blew and over went my SG. Snapped the headstock off when it hit the deck of the pool. I was devastated! I had it repaired and it was a really good job but I ended up selling it for $100! If I only knew back then what I know now!😭😭
He ended the listing because it's not in the sold listings. I'll buy it for $300. I know a really good luthier that can do a seamless job. And they are in Indiana. They would know exactly what to do. I have asked them numerous time if certain guitars with cracked, broken or destroyed headstocks or necks are worth buying and would they di the repair.
I bought a 335 with a broken headstock for dirt cheap. Glued it myself. Could see the crack but more importantly it was solid and never had an issue with it. Headstock breaks are not the end of the world
Wood and epoxy bonds are very strong when done correctly! So if it was done correctly than that headstock repair job is actually quite strong, at least at the joint itself
The nails seem to be an attempt to act like rebar… I’d have drilled it out for some hard wood dowels, since you do have to accommodate the tuners (and I would have gone for the smallest possible vintage style so there’s less material removed).
There was one moment when I thought I had seen that Flying V XPL in the hands of the late Alan Merrill (who originated "I Love Rock and Roll") when he appeared on this HBO miniseries, Encyclopedia Brown the Boy Detective. However, though similar, I think the one Alan's character is seen holding in that segment is custom-built.
Neck breaks seem to hold together better these days when repaired, so requiring radical solutions is not so common. My nephew's dad had '73 SG back in the mid 80s. I remember he was always breaking the neck and getting it repaired. They tried all sorts. He gave up in the end and got rid of it. I wonder if wood glue is stronger these days or something? P.S. Gibson necks breaking has become one of those meme things. GIbson had a solution, but folks did not want it. Maple necks.
0:30 It almost looks like it's smiling. At least a couple of those repair snapshots are from twoodfrd I think. Great channel. Oh wow that one with the screws is like a silent hill guitar. All rusty and crusty. 8:20 Wow that finish checking. It really has a neat style to it of its own. Like some kind of abstract labyrinth or like stacked stones or something. Not like the usual kinda stretch marks you usually see. And yeah like you said might've absorbed some cigarette smoke and really darkened the lines.
Correct… I recognised them from one of Ted’s videos I watched a couple days ago… he’s a great luthier and so interesting to listen to with the history of all things guitar also!
You don't need a miracle worker to replace that headstock. You will end up with a scarf joint, but if you know what you are doing, it is not that big of a deal. I would definitely think repair before I would consider part out value.
I knocked my Standard off its stand turning to talk to someone. I was pretty sick. I live in Fort Wayne so I took it to Sweetwater. They did such a nice job that guys that have played it have never noticed the headstock was nearly snapped in half.
That Epoxy SG could make for a fun headless conversion project! You won't have to feel bad about removing the headstock for that like SixStringTV did a while back! \m/
I think you were refering to me Trogley? I am super picky about condition and the Ferrai Red Flying V XPL is missing it's Original Hard Case (Tear Drop Style) and they are asking way too much for it so I passed, but thanks for thinking of me! LOL!
Oh boy... D-Town guitars is fairly local to me. I've been to that shop a few times. Apparently, he wanted to buy my '84 Explorer with 3-P90s and a Kahler.
This is actually pretty sick, and I bet it plays ok. When you put them on blast like this I don't think it helps anyone. I don't think anyone's going to be fooled by this clear headstock To be passed off as vintage. Hope he sells it. Honestly it would be worth buying just to review it.
88 is for late. Hey Trogly what's up he just played it to hard or he pulled a Paul Stanley or Jimmy Hendrix except he didn't light it on fire. What do you think? Oh the epoxy model is that some new model we haven't heard of yet. Does the cab come with it at that price? Another well played guitar. Rather take off a kale than a Floyd. Wow that's some heavy picking. Thanx Trogly.
I believe this is very creative solution and to have fun with it. You can’t take yourself too seriously and this is fun. Great price too! How many of us have replacement teeth, hips and knees? I would definitely rock this epic epoxy LP!
Austin, how long have you been doing this now ? And is it your full time job ? Also if I wanted you to find ne a specific les paul ,what kind of money would you need ?

That's rough my friend!!!

What’s with the pickup rings? 🤔
Somebody put th screws in crooked and it buckled the rings.
Looks like it sat in a hot room or something for them to warp.

Unless it’s previously owned by Pete Townshend….

Woo hoo!! Wearing my Trogly shirt tonight!
The epoxy will likely bend if it gets hot. Maybe that’s why the repairer embedded nails in it.

That pretty cool

Joel Grant would love this one.
SGs with Kahlers are sexy.
At least you can see he made a ridiculously bad but ingeneous effort. No one can accuse him of having a wall hanger.
😂😂
Khaler with the lock screw in place is really nice. It is too bad most old ones don't have them. they feel so much nicer on the hand than a TOM
Brilliant works 😂👍
Id rather buy an Epiphone than that jank repair

I have an Epiphone Les Paul studio Goth. It’s in excellent condition, and I paid $200 for it. Have you reviewed any of these?
The seller ended the epoxy LP listing already. What the hey🤔. The seller took a shot. Good of you to give seller a shout out Trogly 👍🎸🎸🎸.
Epoxy is not super strong by itself. Strength comes from what you mix it with. The mixed stuff can be very very strong
I only see One screw going into the wood. The other screws and nails are just laying in the epoxy.
I knocked my Standard off its stand turning to talk to someone. I was pretty sick. I live in Fort Wayne so I took it to Sweetwater. They did such a nice job that guys that have played it have never noticed the headstock was nearly snapped in half.
I though the worn through part of the finish on the Flying V was a homemade handle on the guitar lol
“Previously owned by Pete Townshend….”
That first LP….did it possibly go through some sort of fire? What’s left of the original headstock looks like it was burnt at some point.
What’s going on with the pick up rings on the epoxy guitar
That Epoxy SG could make for a fun headless conversion project! You won't have to feel bad about removing the headstock for that like SixStringTV did a while back! \m/

Why are the pickup rings all bent out of shape?
That's especially common on late 80s/early 90s pickup rings. Likely has something to do with the material used to make them
Gibson Quality Seal: You know the neck will break.
wow someone already bought it, cool to see though! Hopefully whoever has it can play it.
Yes, a volute _must_ be added! That thing is firewood though. 👌😅
Am I the only person ever who sent their guitar to Gibson itself for a headstock break repair?
The SG looks hella cool 🔥🔥🔥

Or, buy it and have it properly repaired.
It looks cool!
The epoxy headstock LP reminds me of the Albert Fish body X-ray ...yikes ! Thanks Trog !
0:17 Imagine a LP headstock breaking? What are the odds?🎸🤔
That wiring, and the crap wires say otherwise. Looks epiphone.

Dude did fantastic job on headstock. Very unusual but well done kinda
There are plenty of fantastic guitars out there brand new with no broken anything… For $720
Dr. Frankenpaul…les….an intact headstock. 🎸😮
Good try. It’s still terrible. Just buy a mint Epi. I guess for parts…..
Les Popsicle
3:25 I’ll give him $50 and my spare tire from the car I’m selling.
Oh my word..once you see it…
All the different ways to take the path less traveled in guitar land.
Didn't lack for motivation
So lets get this straight - dude will PAY ME $720 to take that Les Poly off his hands? Nahhh, he'd have to go a Grr before I'd take it. 🤡
😂HAHAHA this is my brothers listing he is freaking out about this video (The epoxy listing)
Hopefully in a good way! haha
I believe this is very creative solution and to have fun with it. You can’t take yourself too seriously and this is fun. Great price too! How many of us have replacement teeth, hips and knees? I would definitely rock this epic epoxy LP!
