Does No Touch Mean No Cuing? | Facilitated Communication | Rapid Prompting Method

  • This educational video is intended to bring attention to the problem of facilitator cuing in a technique called Facilitated Communication, also known as Spelling to Communicate and Rapid Prompting Method.
In this video, Tracy Kedor and her son Ido, use FC to communicate both on a stationary keyboard and with a letter board held in the air. The question addressed is "Can facilitators influence their clients' interaction with a letter board or keyboard without physical touch?
To date, there is no reliably controlled evidence to prove FC/S2C/RPM are independent forms of communication. Rather, the evidence weights heavily in the direction of facilitator cuing, which can be inadvertent, subtle, and sometimes difficult to detect without appropriate, blinded testing, put in place. Most facilitators, though well-meaning, are not aware of the extent to which they cue their clients.

Well done. You pick on so much I hadn't noticed. What the parent never seems to explain is why the letterboard needs to be in the air. Or why if the child wants to communicate something that he wants to say, she just leaves him alone with the keyboard while she goes about her day and comes back when he is done and she reads what he wrote. Why does she need to sit there looking at the keyboard? The computer will remember what key he hit.
This is so easy to test, the only reason she won't is because she probably knows it won't work unless she is right there holding the letter board or sitting next to him. And admitting that all these years and all the things she thought he said to her were not true, would be too much of a task to her mentally to realize it was just wasted years.

I think this video has not well represented the method. For one thing RPM , S2C and FC are all different methods . However, they all require prompting - which fades as fluency increases. The prompt type varies depending on which method is being used . Also spellers spell with multiple partners . Not just one . And there is always a consistent pattern to their language and personality traits regardless of which partner they work with. The theory that this is a hoax woukd mean that a team of partners (which usually includes multiple family members , the original facilitator/practitioner , school aids , aba therapist etc ) woukd have to meet together to compare notes on the decided personality they’d given for the speller . It’s a preposterous theory . Plus there was an eye tracking study conducted that proved the spellers authored the messages . They wore special glasses that tracked eye movements and timed them . And my goodness if we can believe these spellers are intelligent enough to learn some new language that’s more subtle than sign language - reading finger and hand movements from their peripheral vision- well then I think we can make the leap they are in fact intelligent enough to type a message themselves.

@@courtneyeastham4157 Can you show me a video of someone who is no longer needing to have their facilitator in the same room with them when they type? It's been 30+ years, surely there are a lot of them?

Not sure what cuing in FC/S2C/RPM has to do with training wheels on a bicycle.

So then your belief is these individuals are too incompetent to have their own thoughts and communicate them through typing, but they are competent enough to learn and alternate unspoken language based off of reading another person's subtle hand movements with their peripheral eyesight and interpreting those slight movements as one of the 26 letters in the alphabet . They can do this so proficiently that many of them are able to write books, turn in college papers , give "speeches" as various conventions. So all of us parents and facilitators are in on this giant hoax. But what about the fact that the same non-speaking individual can work with multiple facilitators ? And maintain the same style of writing and same word choice pattern across multiple facilitators ? Does the facilitator have a group meeting with the parents, school aids and anyone else who ultimately because a facilitator for this individual and say look " I have given Sam the personality of a snarky yet intelligent young man eager to speak his mind. He likes to use the word 'presumptuous ' and 'advantageous' a lot and his favourite curse word is 'ass'. He loves his family and is protective over them so he's quick to defend them. He hates ABA therapy but enjoys science and math at school . He wants to go to college to be a scientist." SO now everyones on the same page make sure you answer all his question according to this personality I have created for him ? AND even if a small group of sociopath cohorted to pull off some grand hoax , do you realise there are thousands of us around the world. Are we all this psychotic having these secret meetings. creating false personalities. AND if so to what end? Money ?! HA this is not a hugely profitable career choice in my experience . FAME ?! HAHAHA Yeah right we get accused of black magic and doubted on the daily . WHY is it so hard for people to believe NonSPEAKING does NOT equal NonTHINKING ? They'd rather analyse our every move and come up with some convoluted theory of how we use our body energy and subtle movements to create false personalities in the nonspeaking community so that we can become rich by exploiting our own children (for the parents who facilitate) . I had a young man the other day tell us an item on his bucket list. He was very very specific and it was to go to an area I had literally never heard of . However, his mom looked it up and he was right on the money on where it was. And he then explained why he wanted to go there. They sometimes spell words I myself can not spell. We got non speakers graduating from college! How is a facilitator going to know enough on every subject to write college papers that get passing grades? We are graduating more and more practitioners by the quarter . More and more non speakers are sharing their stories , their voices ! They will not be silenced any longer.

Thank you for your feedback. Your response highlights the emotionality of this topic. However, with the high degree of facilitator influence with FC/RPM/S2C, it is the responsibility of facilitators to undergo appropriate, reliably controlled testing to make sure they are not inadvertently controlling the typed messages.

There are no peer-reviewed articles showing any experimental control of using S2C/FC/RPM and an increase in functional communication. For all you know, language could have already been in the learner's repertoire and they would have been able to do this with any old stencil. FC didn;t teach them how to communicate. And yes, I do think there are a ton of concerns of internal validity for your opinions passed as facts. I do think there is motivation to lie about this working. You joke about "fame" but I believe that is a real factor. Do you think these guys would be getting any attention if they weren't the poster child for this junk? Instead of being that kid that everyone feels sorry for, now they are this super hero who overcame all these hardships and it's all because of this disproven, psudoscientific method...and now, you can be fooled too with only 5 easy payments of $39.99! FC comes with everything you see here: one plastic stencil definitely not bought at wal mart for a dollar, a pointer thing, and false hopes and dreams making you think your loved one is actually speaking their mind. The fact that you are pushing this garbage when there's so many other methods makes me question your motive. You are the face of negligence and you should be ashamed.

@@soulstarseeking9 I think it is an insult if people use facilitated communication and believe that the individual is actually talking to them. I think it is an insult that these individuals want to communicate, however, this pseudoscience is putting words in the mouth and not correctly Representing the thoughts of the speaker. I think it is an insult to provide false hope When there are so many other scientific therapies out there shown to be effective and do what they are designed to do.

This girl has know idea what she is talking about my son uses S2C. It works. They need training with hand and moving up and down if there eyes are not on the board. Moving the head does not influence letter selection. Ridiculous.

We've been searching for videos that demonstrate S2C works without facilitator cuing. Could you provide us with a video of your son using S2C so we can see it being used effectively? Both the facilitator and your son would need to be completely in view (e.g., not blocked by a table or other object or, as we see in many current S2C videos, with the facilitator edited out of the frame). If your son uses a letter board, it's preferable if we can see what letters are being selected during the typing activity. If he uses a stencil, then a clear view of the stencil would be optimal as well. Thanks in advance.
