"Why did you trap people in this world?"
"I don't remember"
Sword Art Online gets my 10/10
WAAAAAAAAWWWW
asuna: oh kirito even though you are a bland boring deus ex machina i still love you for no reason now let's have sex
kirito: i'm sad
asuna: oh
+asdfasqwert Hey! :) I finished the first season today. It was really nice but as you said the second part was kinda ok. I liked the first 14 episodes more. Anyways it was a good first season for me can't wait to watch the second :D
BabyDontQQ dont get to exited the second season is somehow worse
nerdamation damn is it so bad like everyone says?
Good things about the show:
-Concept
-Animation
-Soundtrack
Bad things about the show:
-Absolutely everything else
I agree with u but only in the 2nd season and that the bed of season 1 where thy go into that other game with fairies
+Tenzin Tsering bed=end
+Tenzin Tsering Everyones entitled to an opinion i suppose, but to me Part one is terrible, and only has good concepts it chucks out the window. The ending especially is what destroyed the first part.
Bad things in general:
Unneeded incest
Unneeded harem
Invincible plot armor
etc.
ikr
SAO had so much potential. They could have made that first arc into 100+ episodes and it would have been great. I didn't mind the married relationship stuff because it makes for a good love story and them always wanting to protect each other could make some good moments (I'm a sucker for the main guy protecting the main girl from harm) but it was done too fast. The most annoying thing was their "child" they had. Wish they never added that. Alfenheim wasn't nearly as good as SAO. Shoulda at least did all 25 episodes in SAO. Such a good concept was ruined but it was still really hype and I loved the positives they had.
That is exactly what I thought. Since Sword Art Online hadaround 100 levels they could have had 100 episodes, if not more. Once they got out Sword Art Online (which the show is freakin named after) and went to the fairy place, I completely lost interest
mmhmm. Such a waste. I still watched the rest of the series but wasn't nearly as good.
What I sort of thought they could've done better is that they fledge-out and focus on the plotline and concept of s1 without all the lovey-dovey nonsense, and THEN, they throw in the romance stuff with Sinon in s2 in the GGO arc. I personally didn't feel anything for Kirito and Asuna's relationship, and I think that Sinon would've been a better matchup for Kirito.
SAO was based on a novel if im not mistaken, if it was like a manga then yes what you said is completely right.
SAO started as just an amateur web novel actually (just like One Punch Man was a web comic). It got picked up and rebooted as a light novel series with some minor changes, then directly into anime. But there's no way they could have done 100 episodes of anything given how short the light novels are. Also they don't do 100 episode anime anymore (except Dragonball Super). The reason episodes 3 and 4 are wonky is because they are just side stories released after the first novel, so they really were filler that shouldn't have been there. The reason everything in ALO was so different is because it was from the sequel novel...also the author has admitted that he's bad at writing female characters as anything but "love interest" hence the dumb "harem" thing.
Luckily, he improved quite a bit and SAO II is much, much better with good character development including a long-awaited arc for Asuna where Kirito plays only a bit part. Turns out Kirito is actually pretty cool when he's just a support character. I think the author is writing a reboot novel series now to actually do the SAO arc properly from the 1st floor up now that he has a lot more writing experience. So there's always that.
I feel like the writers of Sword Art are between two people. One guy who attempts to do a decent job, and then a young horny teen boy that is addicted to hentai and makes every account name "Dark Angel xx Demon Hunter Demon Man" and never wants his character to die.
The first part of the show was interesting, an amasing concept of "You're trapped here bitch! Kill or Die, your choice." and then your left with Kirito, an akward kid who is afraid of people.
Then they just throw that character flaw away cuz who needs'em? Then we meet Asuna, a bad ass girl who actually was her own person and fought with Kirito rather than became the bottom bitch.
Than half way down the show, the decent writer goes on vacation and the teenager takes over and forces invincible plot armor with cringefest romance, then an annoying ass highpitched fairygirl who has a weird ass wannabe daughter complex who litteraly helps Kirito cheat.
Then they throw away the only intense drama away by saying
"You won against a bullshit lastminute boss of the final floor LITTERALLY CUZ YOU DIDN'T WANNA DIE REALLY BAD"
Then throws them into a story where Asuna becomes a 3 time rape victim of being raped unconscious, being raped in chains, THEN BEING RAPED BY SLIMEY TENTICLES! And completely erased any characteristics she had.
And then Kirito's kinda sorta sister with big tits and is being stalked by her creepy friend wants Kirito's dick cuz Harem.
Then they save Asuna and are now in a gun game WHERE KIRITO CHEATS AND GETS BS STATS IN A FUKIN GUN GAME WHERE HE CAN SLICE BULLETS UPCLOSE TO HIS FACE AND DODGE EVERYTHING BECOMING INVINCIBLE OP BULLSHIT!!!
And meets a girl who is hating Kirito then wants his dick later on and for some reason Asuna is ok with being friends with EVERY GIRL WHO WANTED KIRITOS BLANK EMOTIONLESS DICK.
I could go on for hours, but the final score for me is 5.5/10
Amazing Animations
Believable Concept
Great Atmosphere
But
Shitty Story
God awful Characters
Shitty plot
Shitty dialogue
Shitty Harem
Shitty pacing
Fuck man...
Damn thats pretty long lol. SAO could've been better but it lost its potential. If you want better anime than sao then watch Log Horizon.
+iClassic SAO isn't even good bro. Just read my long ass comment, it's just me getting off the shit from my chest but it's true. I'm not opinionating most of it, it's all in the show and it all happens. I could go on forever because I severely hate how this show which had alot of it's potential and effort into the artwork and animation was trashed and put to shame.
I'm pissed about it.
LOG.HORIZON.
you totally said everything i felt about SAO
SAO was originally going to be a hentai series not kidding
SAO was my first anime, so despite all of it's terrible things, it still holds a place in my heart.
me too
Same here
+Alex James Poor thing...
People should start with Death Note or FMA or Cowboy Beepop. Not this
+Alex James Watch more anime man. You'll be surprised how many good ones are there
+kneza96BG I have been. I'm currently watching Noragami Aragoto, Digimon Adventure Tri, and Nisekoi, with plans to watch Nisekoi's sequel series, The Devil is a Part Timer, The Seven Deadly Sins, One Punch Man!, Medeka Box (and it's sequel), and K-On! (and it's sequel).
Agreed, but the first half of the series is a guilty pleasure of mine, possibly because I read heavily into those moments of clarity as character development.
+T Kent SAO has those? I thought they were a myth!! :O
Natboy129
Like I said, I probably read too much into it. But I absolutely despise the second half of the season... Haven't watched SAO2 yet, dunno if I want to.
+T Kent Dont worry, everyone despises the second half. Everyone. Also, i havent watched SAO 2 yet, but i watched a breakdown by Digibro and i have to say it really is not that good...
As for the character development, yes, it is there, it just never seems to go any where, or randomly gets butchered, like Asuna in general.
+Natboy129 It really isn't that bad. It's just the same shit as the last season. There's boring filler, and alright writing, It's just nothing remarkable. It's a solid 6 on a scale of one to 10 in my opinion.
+Ingmar Fris Its what the series could have been that annoys me. Instead of an interesting exploration of morals and gaming communities like they could have done with GGO they stick to the exact same shit but more bleak. Granted its not terrible, but theres inconsistencies and missed opportunities that really get under my skin.
If you want to know more about what i mean, id check out Digibro and his series on it. That sums up my problems with it best.
Kirito should just be nicknamed Jesuskun since that's pretty much what he is
Anime sin is already calling him that!
Spiral Matt yeah that's where I got the idea
Rashotcake you must've told him or something
Rashotcake
So.... Like Jesus Yamato...
He is a chick magnet! Even in games
Two words. SAO abridged.
Two words. Fuck yes.
We must save my fami-AAAAAAAAHHHHHH
That's kind of like four words
Jewel Sims
One word. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
***** Winners don't do drugs! Except steroids, in which case, use lots of drugs!
As a part of this anime's target audience (a young teen who has a passion for games) I personally dislike this anime, I couldn't get past the tenth or fifteenth episode and felt reluctant to even watch past the fifth. The fact that it's so loved and overrated but so many people angers me, because they seem too caught up in how cool Kirito is or how badly they'd want an MMORG VR (because who the fuck doesn't want that?) or how great the story is, only because they've either never watched a good anime or are too thick to understand any shows with well-written plots. Many of my friends recommended it to me, but when I finally watched it, I was extremely disappointed. Before all you 12-year-old hardcore SAO fans start trying to insult me because I have an opinion, allow me to explain; The plot was repetitive, and Kirito is a flat-out Mary Sue. Asuna is fucking badass (maybe a bit too much so), yet is pushed aside as another damsel in distress that has fallen for Kirito.
*Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't watched/read SAO*
The story also seems to be extremely contradictory, several times. A couple of years pass by in-game, which means how much time passed in real life? Months? In the real world of the anime, there are thousands of people sitting in their rooms with a giant fucking helmet on, and they don't already starve to death or get killed by someone pulling off their helmet for them? Remember that eating in-game doesn't satisfy their actual hunger. Also, Kirito is set on using his godlike powers (that break the laws of the game itself) for the good of the thousands of other people trapped in this game and be the first to escape because he's so manly and heroic and brave, yet he /fucking marries his waifu and lives in the woods for like a year/ WHICH WAS COMPLETELY RANDOM AND UNRELATED TO ANYTHING. It was a failed attempt of showing their 'undeniable love for each other,' but one of the only things that fans gather from that whole time is Kirito putting his hand on Asuna's ass. Because it's implying that they fucked. In a video game. After knowing each other for about a week. GG son.
Also, why the fuck did Kirito want to hide his abilities? What the fuck, if you reveal that you're the fucking highest level bitch on the planet and have WOOAAAHHH DUAL BLADESS!!!11111, no one's gonna fucking touch you. And if they try to, either chop their heads off or summon your fucking harem to protect you. Strong players in actual MMOs rarely ever hide their strength, as you constantly see max-leveled folks dueling their asses off in major cities in games, always. They buy costumes and cosmetics to show how rich they are because they grind such high level dungeons and get good loot, but what does this kid do? He hides it away until someone almost fucking dies. Why? For dramatic effect? Bragging rights? I genuinely don't understand. Also, though this isn't very important in terms of what I think of the anime itself (but I thought is worth mentioning), many girls fangirl because "Kirito is so hot." As a girl who does very much fangirl when I see an attractive character, all I have to say is this bitch is generic as FUCK. Short black hair, black eyes, simple young character facial structure, no features that make him unique or distinguishable at all besides his coat or swords. Or Asuna, because all she turned out to be was another one of his accessories.
I do admit that the animation is pretty nice, but other than that, SAO is kinda just a pile of lost potential that made millions for some reason that I really can't grasp.
I'd like to say that some of my claims may be arguable or inaccurate because, as I previously mentioned, I didn't finish the anime. If so, please reply in a mature manner and tell me about anything I got wrong, along with canon proof.
To those who now hate me because I don't have the same opinion as you, hate on me all you want! I probably will never read what you say or reply so feel free to waste your time listing all the swear words you can think of in hopes of offending me~
You....I like you. You have common sense.
OMG YES YES YES I AM ALSO A FANGIRL WHO REALIZES HE'S NOT HOT OMG THANK YOU YES FINALLY HOW DO PEOPLE FIND KIRITO OR EREN HOT????? THANK YOU SO MUCH OMG +1,000
I agree with you on some of your points, like stating that Kirito seems a bit too OP and Asuna, a strong, independent character, was wasted by being subjected to a somewhat-forced romance. However, I will correct a few of the "contradictions" you've stated, as they're explained through the light novels and other stories. The SAO incident went on for approximately two years, both in-game and in reality. At the very beginning, Kayaba Akihiko, the developer of SAO and the Nerve Gear, allowed all the trapped players to be temporarily disconnected from the server and moved to specialized hospitals, where they would receive IV treatment and be under constant monitoring from the government (Light Novel #1). Kirito has an early advantage in the game, due to his experience garnered as a beta tester, and he's also shown to be well-versed in general video gaming, so that might somewhat compensate for his extreme skill. Kirito and Asuna only lived together on Floor 22 for two weeks before being summoned back to the front lines, where the game then promptly ended (Anime Episodes 11-14). Both of them actually knew about one another for almost the entire stretch of the game, as they form a temporary party to tackle floors 1, 2, and 3, (Aria in the Starless Night/Monochrome Concerto) as well as engage on mini-adventures like recovering Asuna's rapier after it "disappeared" (Rondo of the Transient Sword side story). Addressing the claim that he hides his true skill, I could just chalk it up to the fact that he's the typical "nice guy," but the fact that his first clan, The Moonlit Black Cats, was massacred in front of eyes due to the fact that he hid his level might have something to do with it (The Red-Nosed Reindeer). I personally enjoyed SAO for the animation style, the excellent music, the nostalgia factor that brings back memories of 2006 Runescape, and my nerdy hope that there will some day be true virtual reality games before I lose interest in them. I hope I was able to clear things up for you, please forgive any grammatical/spelling mistakes.
I personally liked it, but yeah it's got some big problems. Pretty much everything you pointed out there.
Try to look at the positives not the negatives
I'll admit SAO has it's flaws, but I still love it.
Oh, and FYI, it was later revealed that his "cousin" was not related to him at all. So there. It is no longer weird.
"The song is only a dollar. Go buy that shit."
Who the actual fuck *buys* music?
"Why did the creator of SAO trap all of these players?"
He clearly stated that he wanted a world that *he* could control. In short, he wanted to be God.
Also, how is the second villain "laughable"? The fucker almost mastered brain-control technology, and he outright molested Asuna in front of Kirito. That's a pretty fucking dark villain.
And another thing, why are you complaining that there's filler? Name one *manga-based* anime that doesn't have the slightest bit of filler.
I know this show has it's flaws, and I'm willing to admit it has flaws, but the "flaws" you've stated are just nitpicks. Try going over the actual flaws of the anime instead of just picking at the tiniest things.
fma brotherhood was a manga based anime with no filler
TheTbagman Well played, sir. *golf clap.*
First of all, people *do* buy music to support the artist.
Second, Suguha is actually related to Kirito. At first, she is known as Kirito's younger sister. Then is revealed to be cousin instead.
As for Sugo, he IS slightly laughable but mostly has a bunch of issues.
Vivi Phantomhive Huh.
Ok, it's fucked up again.
Dude im adopted so does that mean that i can bang my sister??????
5:40 "And yet all these women look super hot. Making me question why they were playing online games to begin with!"
To this day, this line baffles the shit out of me. Like, what the _fuck_ were you thinking when you were writing this, Arkada?
Tobias van Elk 😂
Tobias van Elk There would be some hot people obviously, but let's be honest, the majority would certainly not be...
My problem is when he says: "Making me question why they're playing online games to begin with."
By saying that, he's implying, if not outright stating, that he sees no reason for hot women to play (online) games, which is ridiculous.
Tobias van Elk I guess, but I think his point is more that it's weird just how every single woman is super hot in the show, when the majority probably wouldn't be
Fair enough, that probably _was_ his point, but he still said what he said. Which is why I question what he was thinking when he was writing the script, because I _know_ that isn't what he meant.
This anime is like No Mans Sky. So much fucking potential, starts out pretty cool, overall is a piece of overhyped shit.
i know this comment is over 4 years old so this past version of you wouldn’t have watched any of season 3/war of underworld but I do think sao redeemed itself. season 2 was actual dogshit in hindsight, but what came after it was fucking great
@@rushinz3761 Yeah I really liked Alicization, especially the first season
My biggest peeve about SAO was the forced romance and the lack of focus on many of the characters other then Kirito. For me it was a 6, period.
Want more focus on character, go to Log Horizon, I've been loving it since release and my interest isn't going down.
Log Horizon's plot, story, and characters with SAO's animation qual would have been much better. Looking forward to episode 24.
HynW Km Now that would me scream with joy, especially if I saw some of the abilities.
I thought I was the only one honestly
My biggest issue was how the creator of Sword Art Online went from being a villain in the beginning to being "just some guy with a dream to build a game world" Yeah, nevermind the fact that you...kidnapped a generation of young people and forced them to play your game or die. When he was explaining his story at the end of the first half and there was this sad dreamy music playing, come on guys...really? This guy is a villain! Remember that? He's the true villain of the show. It's as if halfway through the writers changed their minds and then just went a completely different direction. I don't know why but I absolutely love Sword Art Online but I would call it the "most poorly written anime that I love beyond reason". :/
That's because Log Horizon practically spends ALL of its time talking. Well, duh, of course if you're just gonna stand or sit on one place for the majority of one episode you're gonna get character development, but the thing is, it's boring. Like, they spent how many episodes on politics?!?!?! In an anime!?!?!? Heck, the spent episodes freaking selling burgers -_-
SAO 1, 1st half was watchable and enjoyable enough (kinda)
SAO 1 2nd half and SAO 2 is just, to be blunt, trash.
*****
They don't even use swords anymore.
There are only 14 episodes, what are you talking about
***** There are of course only 14 episodes in season 1.
shhhhhhhhhhh
***** shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
There are ONLY 14. I promise. Now hushhhhhh.
both arcs were unwatchable. the amount of deus ex machina and plot holes were disgusting.
I really liked SAO, and still do, but I completely agree: It wasted pretty much all of it's potential. With the setup it had, it would have worked best with good characters and their interactions because hey, if you are stuck in a world with monsters, you'd want to make friends and form strong bonds. Character and plot. That's what it needed to focus on, and ironically those were the weakest points in the show. That said, I'd still rewatch it because the animation was spectacular, and although he's not particularly interesting as a person, it's still awesome to see Kirito kick ass. :)
I heard that there was a season two
There is, it's called Sword Art Online II
It's already out and they're working on Season 3 now
Yay! River Spirit watches the same amines as me ^.^
River Spirit
OMG RIVER WERE SO ALIKE DAMMIT XD
River Spirit still love the show but not season 2
I'm sure if Glass Reflection re-reviewed this anime today, he'd give it a 5 out of 10 at best
And if he reviewed it today... he would give it an 8
Anyone else think Kirito is trying way to hard be like Guts from Berserk
If there was a fight between Kirito and Guts the first thing that would happen is Kirito turning his back and taunting meanwhile Guts is already preparing a fatality
Austyn Wiles dont ever say that animes name, its cursed
Not to mention have his girlfriend get raped by the main villain.....wait I mean tentacle monster (sigh)
Austyn Wiles THAT WASN'T RAPE! God I hate those scenes enough already, I don't need you haters making it worse by calling it something it clearly is not.
Falcovsleon21
berserk had the most wtf ending of all anime
When I saw the first 2 episodes I got really hyped
2 episodes to defeat 1 boss
And there's a hundred levels?
This is going to be AWESOME
And then the entire SAO arc ended in 12 episodes
This is disappointing
Its isn't much of sword art online as it is alfheim online
There are more eps of ALO than SAO
And I love the concept of super awesome full dive technology but it doesn't develop enough
It could've been so much more
Dionisie Tarlev RIGHT?!?!?!? OH MY GOD THAT IS TOTALLY ME!!
Ikr
+Dionisie Tarlev (Silver) you know the reason? It is cause the Autor have written the manga in very short time for a competition or something (this is what I have read online) and...well...What do you think how it would be? See kirito grinding his way up to Level 100? Wow that must be really amazing to watch :/
But in fact it depends (like everytime) on the viewer. For me it was entertaining. Sure it had his weakspots but...I really enjoyed watching
+Dionisie Tarlev (Silver) i would of watched like 3 seasons of them trying to get out of sao in the first place lol
TheMyKillClan I would be fine with that
The anime is called sao after all
I enjoyed the show but it kind of lost it's edge once the characters got out of SAO so early. If they didn't skip so much time Sword Art Online could have a lot more episodes that actually take place in Sword Art Online.
after reading the comments in here, i came to the conclusion that there is obviously something done extremely right in SAO.
the fact that even though everybody agrees SAO is shit, a lot of said people still say they enjoyed it.
kudos for them for making a shit series this profitable. kinda like Apple products.
*cough* activision
k.. i guess thats true. WAIT WHAT DID U SAY ABOUT APPLE PRODUCTS?!
Hello #2, thought you were gonna say something intelligent there
I agree with everything said in this review. SAO had a lot of potential. Excellent idea, but handled poorly. I honestly don't see why it gets hyped up so much like it's the best anime known to man. It really isn't. I wouldn't say it's bad as I still enjoyed it. It just could have been sooo much better if it wasn't so rushed.
Yeah at least you can make the first part 20-22 eps, then 2arc 5-10 eps.
I didn't see the entire anime but i felt too that it was completely rushed from the beginning. Ever since Kirito's clan died in the dungeon, i was like "wth." It has a lot of potential.
WhiteEmerald1991 FANFICTION FTW!!!
It wasn't rushed because the storyline had been already written in the light novels.
JD Flores ... *facepalm*
*shouts* SPEAKING OF FLAWS
"The Characters"
Made my day.
Made mine too when I first saw this, too. XD
While my fan side is like, "This is a really fun show!" my critic side says,"Yeah.....this show has flaws." And most of the flaws you pointed out I agree with. To much filler: yes. Asuna not being developed enough: yes. And the list goes on. Season 2, however (like a good second season should) I feel fixes some of it's main problems. The second half so far especially gives Asuna more of a character that I am really satisfied with. Overall, not my fave anime, but I still really like it.
I am a Gamer, and I have never played an MMO.
Wait does Tetris count?

+Tenzin Tsering A Hardcore gamer would play minesweeper.
I refuse to believe that the creators of black butler made this monstrosity
of course discluding season 2 of black butler because ya know...
***** I know.
I feel like I was the only person bored to death by Black Butler lol. It had no main plot, it was very episodic. Then again I stopped at episode 9 so I can't talk for the entire series.
Oh season two-...that was-...... that one just pissed me the hell off :c
Fuck u, This Show is ten Times better than Black Butler. That show is soooooo boring!
It's common for people to say that the second half was crap. I will now say that that's total horseshit. This entire series is a microcosm of everything wrong with anime and the fanbase.
***** I love how you use "partially" for safety.
*****
Yeah, too right. Have you seen how many lolicon defenders there are on various message boards/forums?
***** I hate that argument that they sometimes use, "the girls aren't real and no one's really getting hurt." Rubbing yourself off to animated children expresses desire for the real thing; that's concerning. Just like if someone started jerking it to movie violence. It just screams that an individual is fucked up and may need help.
*****
"Paedoshit". Cheers for the new insult. It'll get me far in life.

100/10 anime.
review boku no pico
fuck no
Brother of E.N.D why not
it would be hilarious
if he does a review millions of viewer's eyes are gonna burn
Brother of E.N.D he isn't gonna show the anime he's just gonna talk about it
pls dont. its like opening the ark of the covenant from indiana jones.
I didn't like how after they got out of SAO, they went back to another game, when the anime was specifically titled "Sword Art Online." Alfheim Online should have been an OVA or another season because SAO was rushed. There was barely any character development and the timeskips were too much. Sure, it was 2 years, but if SAO took all the 24 (or was it 25), it would have been better.
I agree with this, the first bit in SAO was filled with mad time skips and character development that happened off screen during the skips. It really should have been two 24 episode seasons to slow down the pacing and to show more elements of the story that were skipped cause of the rush. (The stuff that happened between floors 1-75 that wasn't just the major events.) Most of the time in one episode, the audience was literally shown a character, a short side-story for them, then shown the ending of Kirito's experience with them, and then propelled a billion years into the future in the next episode.
man, I am so glad I wasn't the only one that was irked by the show skipping weeks or months at a time, and then the 2nd half doing relatively nothing with the time allotted to it.
Green Pulsar
Not so annoyed about the timeskip since I read the LN, but I felt that the first arc could have been a bit longer than the second, especially since it added side stories to the original two volumes of the arc. I agree that it was rushed, but ALO was also drawn out. Ehh. The action was still present, and that was all I cared about. Keep in mind that the author was 14 when he started writing. Character development is kinda... lacking, but the action is awesome.
I was really annoyed too.
I like the action, but I'm not a big fan of the romance. It feels kinda sudden and annoying.
I wasn't sudden. If you watch the second season you'll see it wasn't forced. Asuna (indirectly) explains how she fell in love with Kirito. Anyways, they fell in love in the span of 2 years (not forced...).
- Odysseus - Yea. I know they did. xD They spent 2 years getting to know each other, I just really hated the time skips. Like, my sister and I said, it could have just been a long anime, that would have been better in my opinion.
nanumi14 I hated it too. But what are you gonna do?
- Odysseus - Nothing. Nothing can be done.
nanumi14 Sadly.
I remember watching sao for the first time and thinking it was the best show I've ever seen (I was twelve at the time ) and after years of experiencing better stories it makes me sad that I no longer look at sao the way I used to , I remember when I heard about sao had a sequel anime and I was SUPER excited to watch it, long story short stuff got in the way of that and now looking back at sao I'm at least glad it introduced me to other much better anime and for that I'll always be grateful
This show really got me.
The relationship between Kirito and Asuna felt real to me, I even enjoyed the family shit episodes (wich I would normally hate in other shows).
And.... THAT OPPENING!!!!
Irrelevant sub-plots, fan-service filler episodes (sometimes just plain creepy and wrong), bad structure particularly around the middle to the end of the series. It's really hard to even recommend it on that basis, I know I struggled to watch it through to the end because it just got worse and worse as the series went along.
Also the weirdest thing is how people praise the show for breaking typical story conventions but it just doesn't work well. Most viewers see the unconventional second arch as the decline of the show which is an unsatisfying way to end the series. I mean comparing the starting episodes to the ending episodes is like night and day.
I'll be honest. I hated the later half of SAO, but the last 2 episodes were pretty good IMO. I think it would've been a better to not the second half, but what we got was pretty good IMO.
I would say the "Irrelevant" sub-plots are not so irrelevant, if the ova is anything to judge the next season by any way. In the ova, the two people he meets during the sub-plots , start hanging out together in the real world, along with Asuna, and Suguha. I bet they both would of been seen as regularly as Agil (the black guy), if not more if the season was longer. I do agree that the fan service was a bit painful. I don't think the structure was bad, their pacing was off with out a doubt. Kirito spends a year or two in the first season, then probably 2 or 3 months at best in the second season.
justsomeguy3612 actually those 2 girls are hardly even plot relevant later. most people consider the ep from ep 2-7 just fan service filler episodes but actually they arent, sao is adapted from the light novels and the anime didnt follow the novels in order but rather in chronological order of which events happen first, this is why the pacing seems a bit off
in the novels the first volume was the *entire* aincrad/sword art online arc and was the entirely story too that was originally intended to end with just that as the author posted it as a short story as a web novel online in 2002, it was only due to its popularity that the author continued it adding the fairy dance arc and several side stories and it was after the author entered his other story "accel world" into the "Dengeki Novel Prize" contest and won the grand prize that he was asked to bring his sword art online story in and adapted it into a light novel, the 2nd volume was a compilation of those short stories (that people consider the filler episodes) that ties up the missing link between the 2 year time skip and the 3rd and 4th volume were the fairy dance arc
considering how the entire sword art online/aincrad incident was originally intended to be a stand-a-lone story before fairy dance came along its safe to say that fairy dance was the beginning of a drive that just started moving while the sao incident was the satisfying destination everyone wanted
the novels follows better pacing consider the extra volume between the aincrad and fairy dance allows the readers to indulge in the ending of the aincrad incident knowing everything is alright while the anime just throws in front of us the horror of fairy dance as soon as the next ep without letting the revelation of the aincrad ending to sink in
Yuki Fubuki
Adaptations never follow the novel exactly. The rest, tl;dr
justsomeguy3612 actually aside from the pacing the sao anime it followed quiet fatefully
and shame on you for tl;dr
This show had the potential to be as long as Naruto, with so many characters and 2 whole years in the game.
"It's been 6 months since the game started..." ...erm, wait what?! It was really annoying when that happened.
SpiderDevice I know right! I think by the third episode they were at liek floor 30, and then months later it would another 10 floors or so. It was just an annoying thing because it made feel as if Kirito was kind of overpowered and that the SAO game didn't seem too hard except for the boss fights.
I think they could have managed birth at once by making more episodes
SpiderDevice You would have fucking hated the LN. Try this on for size:
"Now, two years later and with twenty six floors left, the number of survivors is around six thousand.
This is the current situation in Aincrad."
-Excerpted from the end of chapter 4, Volume 1.
i hear their making a part two to it not sure if a tease or the truth
What bugs me is that their avatars were supposed to look like their real selves but Lisbeth didn't have her actual hair and eye color like everyone else. Why does no one mention that?
The first half of SAO was good, I hated the ALfheim half, Gun Gale was good, SAO 2 was meh....
ya
+Orashi first half of the first act was good timeskips and pointless quests ruin it for me but i liked gun gale
I totally agree. I didn't like the second half of SAO, and so I dropped the series.
+Chris Howarth same
+Orashi actualy both halfs were shit
Wow... I've watched this show over 5 times and looked at it from many different views. Honestly, the potential wasn't misused, the plot was stunning, and character development didn't suck terribly. The only thing in my opinion that lacked was episodes. I'm happy that this show doesn't drag episodes repeatedly but everything happens too fast.
Joy Li
"and character development didn't suck terribly."
Are you just stupid, or trolling?
I think that the characterization could have been done better, but it was a good show in my opinion, and y'all gotta read the light novels, so much stuff happens
***** Wanna do implicit character development right? Take a hint from Evangelion. That plot was practically character driven. Wanna do explicit character development right? Take a hint from Fullmetal Alchemist. They almost spell out what they've learned, sometimes. In either case, compare them to the "character" "development" in SAO.
You'll find an amazing lack of character in SAO. I can't call Joy Li stupid or a troll, but I do find it a bit curious that he finds that an issue so blatant "didn't suck terribly", and I will let out a very concerned and very confused "...*huh?*"
It says I can't access the page. What gives?
I hate when reviewers give a show a show a good rating and go back to it in later reviews saying, oh, I don't know... IT'S SHIT. Like Arkada did here with his Log Horizon review. I get that SAO had it's problems and to some people it just seems decent at best, but whoever said decent was bad? There are some great parts of this show like the animation and music. Sure there are also shows that are much better than SAO, but I still feel even the reviewers are giving SAO a little too much shit after saying otherwise in their initial review.
i think the "it's shit" part was a reference to that one podcast where everyone called a bunch of stuff "shit" in a joking, not very serious manner
kingjhon8 Yeah I was thinking the same thing after I posted that. xD
Ugh but it just erks me
PokemonMasterAlpha Yeah, i really enjoyed SAO. Th main reason as to why people say it's bad, is that Kirito gets all the bitches, the characters, and that Elfheim Online was boring/bad.
production-wise it was great but looking at the anatomy of the world of SAO it was kinda bad.
Hikari Sakishima no, they say its bad because of character development (non existent), deviation from the plot, the insane amount of filler (around 7 episodes worth), the huge reliance on dues ex machina, the throwing out of the rules of the world that they established and how horrible the villains were.
When I first heard about SAO, I'd thought to my self "Didn't SpyKids do that?"
I want to watch more SpyKids now, at least it is more realistic than SAO.
I really liked this anime when I started watching it but damnn how does every single girls have to fall for damn Kirito? I just can't continue with another episode 😡 sucks
Monika Lawati yeah! Why couldn't just one of the girls fall for Klein? He's cute enough. They could have that as a subplot and an excuse to develop his character and the girl's.
exactly!! They could've focused on Kirito and Asuna's relationship. It would've been way more interesting. The other girls' characters start off really interesting at first but they end up falling for him somehow and it ruins everything for me.. :(
Monika Lawati Yeah. I know the feeling.
Giraffen Benji At least there's someone who understands my feelings. ^^
Monika Lawati Indeed. ^^
- To be honest though, I think the series as a hole would have been better if Klein had been the main character. He seems much more well rounded and not so bitch slap indusing as Jesus-Kun AKA. Kirito. :i
Spot on review. Exactly what I thought of Sword Art Online and very entertaining. Lots of humor and references here and there in your review. I also love the fact that you are very enthusiastic with the review. You avoided having a monotone voice all throughout.
I can see where you get this opinion and fully respect it but I loved SAO a lot. I will say there are a lot of flaws. I do think its hard to find anime without flaws. I also liked the second half unlike a lot of people. I read the light novels so I am somewhat biased.
you wrote that you read the light novels. Would you mind telling me what exactly happens between Asura and Kirito?
I've been hearing mixed rumors all over and it's confusing me so much.
It's also making me have second thoughts of even reading the light novels, in fear that it might ruin the image that the Anime has put into my head.
Also,
I can see how many people could have disliked it, but I never got bored or annoyed by the Anime throughout it all (Well, the second half when they're fairies did make me a bit skeptical, as it was such a major change).
It has it's flaws but it's one hell of an Anime nonetheless (IMO).
From what I understand sauna and kirito stay together bit there is some tension because a lot of the other girls like kirito. Also asuna won't get a large amount if screen time in the second season which is airing sometime in July. The next arc though is the best arc and makes all the others look like crap even though they will have done trouble starting it because if certain key pieces missing from the aincrad arc. All and all the light novels are very enjoyable but are erratic kinda like the anime.
charles ginsburgh thanks for the reply, I really appreciate you took the time to explain that. looking forward to GGO (which I believe is coming out next week subbed) :)
No problem this new season is gonna be awesone. Also sone amusing things will happen. ;)
I'm hyped enough, I really didn't need that last line :l the waiting hurts
How can you give SAO a better review than mirai nikki? At least mirai nikki had some likable characters, I really don't know why people don't like Yuki... is it cause he (wasn't as) mentally insane and actually cried when he was scared? The guy was 14 years old when all this shit went down.. how could you expect him to be completely stoic?
Yuki is very annoying. Even if I ignore the fact that he's a baby it doesn't change the fact that he's not very smart. He's an unlikable main character.
I think sao is a great show to introduce people to anime.
+sara a to introduce
it's a shit show yes
but as an introduction it's good
TheLastWiller No, but it is the first anime a lot of people will see, and since they are inexperienced with good anime they won't be able to tell it's shit until they watch more anime that's good. That's kinda what I was getting at.
Actually they will know... A good introduction show shouldn't be a mediocre anime. If you want to be sure they appreciate it (especially if they're adults) you should give them a classic like, I dunno, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist...
SAO could be okay if that new anime consumer isn't very old and hasn't already developed a critical taste for movies, series, etc.
+YoudonGettit you should remove Evangelion
it's fucked up beyond Repair
not introduction friendly just sayin
YoudonGettit The thing with sao is that it's premise of it is really good, so people watch it because of that alone, but they really f*cked up how most of the plot went along.
*2 years later*
Kirito : Im coming for u Asuna
Nurse : Where are you going?
Kirito : Ill find her... hehehe
Police : Who is Asuna?
Kirito : Met her in a... video game hahehe
Police : Who is she to you?
Kirito : My girl friend... hahahaha
Police : How did you two meet?
Kirito : We had sex hehehe
Police : It was of her on free will... yes?
Kirito : I strapped her to the bed. hehe

jesus christ
I read this two years after you made it lol
dude, I love your facial expressions. Like, I can totally tell you watch a lot of anime, because you are literally a living anime character.
I actually like SAO but I can see its flaws. Party 3?
+The Good Dark Hero (TheGoodDarkHero) Here Here
Great review mate! Also, I have been watching a couple videos of yours over the past year, and I must say I am impressed. It's very hard to find really good anime reviewers on the internet. Especially one that have a similar opinion to mine. I have too say I really enjoy your review style, especially the humor you add to them. Anyway, I'm glad I found you man and I can't wait to see what more you have in store! :)
I found something for SAO called Extra Edition, which looks like a quick recap OVA, while Kirito describes his adventures and the girls are messing around a pool ...
I loved this show. Not to the same degree as the stereotypical SAO fanboy, and I'll admit it had its flaws, but I found it damn enjoyable. The characters aren't as developed as some other anime would have them, but they're definitely compelling enough for you to root for them.
The story was, at times, simple, but not bland and not dumb. Asuna being Princess Peach for part 2 of the show was admittedly one of the things I disliked most, and on the subject of Asuna I really feel as though she never stopped being the badass she debuted as in episode 2. Sure, she turned out to be a tsundere, but so what? She was still a badass female lead with her own unique, if not fully explored, character.
And the action... my god, the action... This show isn't focused on deeply examining the psyches of its heroes and villains. It's meant to show us an open conflict between good and evil, and a boy and girl who love each other trying to conquer the virtual world and finally meet in real life. At that, it excels. SAO has some of the best fight scenes I've ever watched.
In summary, Sword Art Online does what it sets out to do. Believing that as I do, I can't help but consider it anything less than 8/10, and I'm damn well going to watch season 2 in July.
He kinda said that the animation was amazing, so that includes the fight scenes. I disagree with that fact that Asuna is a badass character because she is completely sterotyped. "Oh, i maxed out of COOKING SKILLS" she isn't really unique if you consider that part of it. Not fully explored, well if that is the case, then that proves how poorly developed the character is. And yeah the story isn't too bad, i mean the beginning and the death penalty was amazing as he said, but everything else really was filler-like. Of course not the ending of the first half. 2nd half was just yeah Princess Peach.
Raymond Li Maybe it's because I've only been watching anime for about three years now, but I've never seen a character like Asuna, much less enough such characters to say she's stereotypical. She's a tsundere, she can cook. So?
And you're saying this means she's not a badass? Honestly, in SAO she had almost as many asskicking moments as Kirito himself, and that's saying something. In ALO she didn't really get to shine, but I have a feeling that in season 2 that problem won't be seen again. But that's just a guess.
Yeah, i don't find cooking badass. I mean its amazing she can cook but still, badass? badass isn't the word for a stereotypical house wife. and Of course Kirito is shown badass. He is a wish-fulfillment character remember? Yeah Tsundere, sure, but why do you add "maxed out cooking" in it? i don't like how women are shown with cooking. Its the same as being racist.
Raymond Li I think you mean Sexist.
Naruto Uzumaki actually asuna hardly shows up during the next season if the next season is jsut the gun gale/death bullet arc as the gun gale/death bullet arc focus mor on the psychological trauma of kazuto and the new charactern sinon/shino, it offers mor character development for kazuto though
asuna will hardly be plot relevant until the mother rosary arc (if that arc even gets animated)
btw asuna is actually faster then kazuto but kazuto's reaction speed is way faster, you only find this out in the novels, the anime doesnt even mention this
what are the 6 animes in the "anime peak of greatness" picture? i see clannad and madoka magica but i dont know what the other 4 are..
Your reviews are so funny!! Also I can totally understand your opinions about these subjects!!!
He rated this higher than my show... I don't believe it...
He lost his way...
Strider119119 Never lose your way, friend.
yeah cant believe he rated SAO above anything, and SAO was rated badly lol
samasima I simply cannot understand rating something with so much filler and with such a Mary Sue for a main character compared with a main character with depth and backstory and human weaknesses and a cohesive story with MAYBE 1 or 2 filler episodes. Unbelievable.
Ryuko Matoi well i've seen him mention that he doesn't really like the ratings, and that he mainly has them because some people just like numbers.
because the final score is an average of the story characters animation sound and his enjoyment, if the anime received a high score in animation and sound and a below average score in story and characters and probably a decent one in enjoyment (it sounded like he could somewhat enjoy it as a guilty pleasure) it could still wind up with a fairly high score. that's why arkada recommends actually relying on his opinions throughout the review rather than the numerical score
Ok i'm not gonna lie. At 11:42 after your air drumming, when your hair was forwards like that. I had a mildly gay moment where I thought "Now thats a good looking guy." You should have your hair like that more often.
I agree with him on that.
I thought the show was okay. It's not even close to the best anime ever, but it's by far no where near the worst, it was just..."okay"
Agreed
yeah it was okay for the animation and the soundtrack....
And that's because there are a lot of Bad animes out there. This one could have been one of the best animes, but it wasted it's potential.
I’d give it like a 3 or 5 out of ten, it’s pretty meh but the sexual assault scenes were pretty disgusting which is why I’d give it a 3
Meh.
I agree with most of what you said. Good premise, good animation, and decent music.
But everything else (character, plot, and the friggin' harem elements) just suck.
So in 2013, you guys talk about this being the best show, and then bash on it 2 years later? Hypocrites.
2012 and it was still coming out. I knew it was going down hill after episode 3 but it was still tolerable...until episode 14 onwards....then it was shit.
darkfur3 I myself had quite a hard time watching this but I managed to finish the whole series.
jacksonnintendo3ds Yea....Though I'm not continuing onto season 2...because I have had enough adventures of Mary of the Sue kingdom.
darkfur3
I agree.
Who are "you guys"?
Any Anime that you can say you "That was a good episode" while at the same time thinking the very idea that it was good is ridiculous (and not because it's so bad it's good) deserves deep analyzation because clearly it's doing something right, even though it's failings are much more obvious.
It uses pathos to effectively mask its issues.
...at least in the first arc. By the second arc, it just abuses it in a situation where it can't use it effectively without looking pretentious.
That Neon Evangelion scene plug....you sir deserve this like!
Hmm have you done one yet for Accel World? (I'll need to look) I really love the show - but hate the writer due to how he paces it etc..
Also, I agree with your whole review.
BUT...
The creator of SAO (the game, wanted to clarify) DOES say his motive. He basically says: "I want to rule a world." ...hey, it's reason.
Oh yah!
Umm... why does he want to rule a world? If he did want to rule a world, then why did he go and become the leader of a guild?
Shingeki no Kyojin Didn't say it was a sensical reason, but it's there.
Shingeki no Kyojin he was going to become "captured" and at the end when they had reached the crimson castle (floor 100) he would appear and be the final boss. he only joined the guild to see how everything was progressing and to make sure he could keep the strong players around so he could have more of a challenge when they got there.
BurnTheBlackWolf Thats a terrible reason to murder thousands of people lol. Shouldve atleast mentioned something in his past or about his character so the motivation would make more sense
Before people say "SAO is 10/10", do you really think it is a perfect show? There are too man flaws in SAO to even give it an 8/10. I would not even consider it a 7/10.
I'd give it a 4.
its not Bad like people say i like it Its not a 10 out 10 no but i think 7/10 is fair
Maybe half the episodes in the first arc are good but everything after that is just stupid.
true but i turn off my brian after the first season put yes if the writing was better it could have been really amazing
first half i would say 8/10 second half 1/10
3:39 I'm going to assume Shinji is the source for that screaming
this si 11 years ago damn, i watched these videos when i was younger. thanks arkada
Story: 4/10
Characters: 2/10
Animation: 8/10
Music: 7/10
Enjoyment: 6/10
Overall: 5/10
This anime sucks tbh, it was somewhat enjoyable though.
I genuinely got so bored with the show that i just ended stopping at episode 14... the start was pretty awesome but then it went shit...
Jay Stewart I think the problem with this show was that it tried to make people to take it seriously with the tension built up in the first 3 episodes but then it turned out to be a generic romance/action anime with MMORPGs' element.
What bugs me the most is the number of fanboys who said that this was the best anime of 2012 though.
I know right? 2012 had some amazing shows come out (Kuroko no basuke, Hyouka, Guilty crown and kids on the slope just too name a few.) all of which had consistently better storylines and character devlopment.. And yet, everyone obsessed over this.... It. was. Fucking. Infuriating.
My comment here is irrelovent, but I must point out that Ragna!
"first season" i am #!
"second season" i am #2
it's like they made the series for this rating (literally)
I just finished this anime and i gotta say, as much as i love it i can't exactly argue with your points here. The pacing felt weird to me. I don't mind filler and a story slowing down a bit but at least don't put so many time skips. I constantly was wondering if i missed and episode. Also yeah, i think Kirito is cool but he kinda is a mary sue type character. I didn't feel very attached to any of the other characters cause they weren't given enough development at all. I really did enjoy watching this and i don't regret it. But it definitely could have been better. I'd consider myself a fan but i definitely admit it has flaws and i can understand people not liking it.
And yet despite its flaws, it still somehow has me hooked, im on the second season now. Can't stop, i must see where this is all going.
Have you made a review on the .hack series? I couldn't find any videos on it. Just curious.
This may sound silly but what if..... What if Tristan teamed up with Doug walker for a crossover. A crossover to trash dragon ball evolution. That would be an awesome nostalgia critic episode.
SAO had the best romance with Asuna and Kirito. You can deny it all you want but it's true. Their bond was strong and their interactions were that of true lovers. No anime has ever done this.
Toradora > SAO romance wise.
Lol Toradora romance was shit. I usually love romance anime but this one was just disgusting. I hated the main female character so much.
Ikr. I love SAO!
Haven't watched Clannad, I see.
Clannad was complete trash. I haven't watched After Story, so I'm just talking about the first season.
It's now on Netflix! Good review! I agree with everything but even so I enjoyed it! I'm guessing that is the category with the higher points in your review may have been as well judging from you comments in the beginning.
A decade later and still one of the most iconic anime wether you like or not.
SAO was fine until ep15 where it rushed the plot. Though currently there is a show called Log Horzion that has a better respect for MMORPGs
ASUNA IS SEVENTEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
i feel ur pain bru.
UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Bex Star you know the SAO arc is two years long...so if you start seventeen and finish as a seventeen there is something very wrong in you
but she says shes SEVENTEEEEEN
what was the anime at 10:57 with the guys dueling? i heard sabasa or something?
anyone know what the anime's are at "The peak of anime greatness"? I know Clannad and Fate/stay but what are the other 4?
Gets a 7/10 in my opionion. It was never about the characters or storyline wholeheartedly. It was about the amazing fight scenes and the video game itself. Nothing less, Nothing more. Anyone that thought SAO was about lovey dovey character development and relationships only fooled themselves and took this video game way too seriously. SAO was created to give viewers the feel of what it would be like if our technology succeeds in an advanced virtual reality with nerve signals to the our brains so we can actually feel what we're seeing and how it could be used against us. SAO is not an Anime, It's a powerful idea that humans are still working to achieve to this very day. Now, I will say they totally abused the potential of Asuna and could of made things more clearer. But, as far as the "Incest" and "Tentacles" goes....Like honestly are we talking about Anime or Cartoons? Because if you've been watching Anime for a long time, You know what you're getting yourself into lol
You must have felt dirty when you watch Fullmetal Alchemist and Attack on Titan, thinking that you'd see tentacles and or incest.
(For the record, I did *not* expect that scene in SAO.)
seg162 Right now, Anime is being dominated by fan service and Slice of Life shows so if you plan on being a fan of it, You better develop a strong mind that ignores all of that nonsense when watching. Heard of Kill La Kill? Extremely good show that came out in 2013 but the main characters' outfit looks like gladiator armor and a thong. We lucked up getting a great show Attack On Titan in 2013 but with that said, Some people won't watch AOT because it's too depressing and gory. In other words if you don't have a strong stomach you can't even enjoy AOT. People are getting chewed to pieces and characters are dying left and right. Some fans don't want to watch all of that but it's the best show that came out in 2013 in my opinion. Just because you love an Anime doesn't mean somebody else will, remember that. There's no such thing as facts in your choice of Anime unless we're talking numbers and sales. AOT and SAO reached the West so they're doing extremely well success wise.
This. I agree. I connected with Sao cause my experience with mmorpg and seeing a what if of the future was what hooked me.
the biggest issue is the emphasis on the poorly developed characters and their really badly written relationships.
it tries so hard to evoke your emotions but fails miserably.
I couldn't bear to continue watching due to how grating Asuna's character became. That, and the plot was weak.
Call me dumb, but I've recently started to watch this anime, I'm on episode 8 already! So I've got to say, this game is actually one of my favorite animes, probably my second favorite? That might sound to high, but I'm a gamer at heart and I love the fact that this anime is about being trapped in a video game. I'm not the greatest at explaining why I love this anime, but I know this anime was worth watching.
What's that "Tsubasa" anime to wich he refers?
it looks pretty good.
And then there's season 2...joy.
No, I have not. It was supposed to be a joke (I do want to see the second season). Sorry if I offended you.
HSMediaNerd well u cant entirely blame the anime. For once the anime was actually following the light novels rather on spot. Its the one time where the light novels are not that good. The Second Season of SAO aka Gungale Online (not sure about spelling), i hope do they not follow the novels that closely .....other wise it will be another SAO (but worse). That being said im prob still going to watch it regardless.
Yeah. I heard that the majority of the first half of SAO was based off of a bunch of side stories known as SAO Progressive.
HSMediaNerd Albeit, i have read the light novels that the content of SAO II is based off of, and i will say they were the best two books within the entire series with the BEST heroine to ever come out of sao. Although there's enough derp to fill the red sea, it should be an enjoyable watch. ( SHOULD )
I guess the only thing we can do it wait.
I watched SAO-or at least up to episode 14...that was where the show completely lost my interest...but before that, the show was ehhhh/okay/good-sometimes
12:42 Tristan, I must know, what are those anime on the 'Peak of Anime Greatness?' I've got Stein's Gate, Evangelion, Clannad, and Fate Zero, but what are the remaining two?
+Iceose Kara no Kyoukai (the woman in red with the knife), and Puella Magi Madoka Magica (the two girls).
+Leidolf Winter Thank you kind sir. I have some watching to do. :)
that stupid blue haired dude:"dont worry about me. I am the first to die! I dont need a fucking potion, its okay if i die because the scene will look dramatic! "
you forget that there is actually a third camp of people when it comes to discussing shows like SaO, and that is the camp that I happily belong to, the (Admittedly) smaller group of people who either haven't seen the show in question, or who have seen it but still don't give two shits.
Amendment: I have now seen this show, and I can understand and appreciate the absolute fury that a lot of people have about it. I can honestly say that if the series actually ended after the first story arc, it would have been a really amazing series. That being said, I still can happily report that I still don't give two shits.
The Villain in glasses will trump the Black swordsman any day
kirito would stand a prays chance against shiroe
That's right
HEY! You put this same comment on Gigguk's review for SAO too! I'm watchin' you!
Hah hah yah got me wat do want a cookie
I'd prefer some Takoyaki instead.
I know hentai OVA's better than SAO.
KCrits oh really...umm would you like to ummm say what some of those are for ummm..... research purposes
I would love to hear your take on Sword art online season two particularly the Mother's Rosario arc
This anime really started to piss me off when I realised the story wasn't actually about defeating the 100 floors and escaping but just a romance story. If you watch this anime with the thought of beating the 100 floors being the story you will find the first half being one and all filler if you know what I mean. They could've made this so awesome with badass boss-fights but no suddenly we find ourself to be on the 70+ floor and in the SAO universe they only show 3 boss-fights. When it came clear to me this was just a love story covered up so that the male audience wouldn't run away I 'enjoyed' it more but there was nothing that kept me excited. The best part of this anime was probably the fairy king just because they succesfully made me be disgusted by a drawn character.
idk man when I realized that I actually made a much deeper connection with the show, even though I went in expecting it to be about beating the levels, it became more important to me than I expected
ILLmazing7 well as I said once it came clear to me I could enjoy it more cause I knew what I was getting into then. I just disliked it how at first they make it look like something else. It's just giving false hopes since you expect something else.
If I was the writer of this show, this is what I would do:
Kirito would, on par with his personality, still embark on his "solitary" journey through the hundred levels of the game while finding new players & friends. Hell, just to keep in lieu with the apparent tone of the show, I'd even keep in a little fanservice in there for his plot arc, but of course I'd throw in a lot of character development between him and his friends to make them all, (especially Kirito), grow as characters and let them become relatable.
Before he embarks on his mission, he does meet Asuna; but only ONCE for, like, a mob or boss fight to establish the skills of the two as natural fighters in the game. It is after this when they, (and most of the other players watching the fantastic fight unfold), acknowledge each other's prowess as fighters and get to know each other. Already, Asuna shows fairness and intelligence in her leadership, and since she shows these traits, people are already looking up to her as the possible leader to assemble an army against the hundred floors towards freedom. Obviously, with her strategic mind, she figures that an army trained by new friend, Kirito, would become unstoppable.
However, Asuna believes heavily in "strength in numbers", while Kirito prefers to take it solo. They have a bit of a disagreement, but eventually Asuna comes to the conclusion that Kirito should be able to fight on HIS terms, not ones she gives as orders. They part ways very early on, and the show would follow their paralleling story arcs as time progresses and both become even stronger. Of course, they do meet, but it's very few and far in between, with their relationship steadily going from friends to comrades in arms. (And maybe even lovers if I wanted to.)
Asuna is, as Arkada said, a character with the potential to become a young Major Kusenagi or a badass-normal version of Daenarys Targaryan: feminine, yet demanding of respect because of their emotional & mental fortitude and their raw skill in the art of obliterating the enemy. It's a shame how horribly bashed the character ended up in the show, and I hope that my little idea gives everyone, (even you, Arkada, if you're reading this), a glimpse at exactly how far the writers of the show could have gone with this powerful female lead character.
Kyaba or however you spell his name, actually explained part of why he trapped everyone though. He explains that he always wanted his floating sky castle in a world of his own. If I remember correctly.
What were the shows on the peak of anime greatness. I recognize Kara no Kyoukai and Clannad but that's it, i don't know the others. Thanks in advance to whomever can tell me.
SAO is my guilty pleasure. Simple as that. I see why it's bad. I accept that and turn my brain off. If you enjoy it. That's like, your opinion man.
well yes the characters are underdeveloped...I mean the first arc is 700 pages long and there were only 12 episodes....I think the series woud have been better if they made it an annual series with 24 episodes per arc
this was my first anime so could somebody explain what they mean by underdeveloped characters? Like can somebody give an example of a show that properly develops characters so i could watch it as reference?
Jack McDonald Claymore! Great anime, watch it on youtube from the channel vitalsolution
Jack McDonald i would say check out an anime called soul eater. if you are looking for a good fighting type anime.
But claymore is better for well developed characters.

''this was my first anime so could somebody explain what they mean by underdeveloped characters?''
Basically a character that remains mostly unchanged throughout the series.
Seeing characters ''grow'' during the series in a realistic and entertaining manner is a key for emotional connection with the characters.
This growth is typically related to the ''problem(s)'' of the series which the characters are supposed to come by, and in a good show, change due to or to solve the problem.
''Like can somebody give an example of a show that properly develops characters so i could watch it as reference?''
Clannad. No competition.
@GlassReflection Mr. Akarda, if you are reading this(and I'd loved to see a review on this) you should watch, if you haven't seen it, the second season of SAO. After watching the first season I agree it was just a dragging show and hyped up at 100, when it was really a 75. However, after unwillingly watching the second season it got way better. I put it at a 86/100 it does drag a little but it touches the audience to a level when reality does come into play.
Do you think you will ever review an abridged series, like the glorious SAO Abridged
Every MMO I've ever played in, I've played alone. I had a fairly high level & worked best by myself, often taking out groups of other players by myself. Yes, getting there took many, many hours, & ultimately I lost all progress when my graphics card got left in the dust. However, I don't regret this, & ultimately had more fun running around alone without a group lagging behind me or refusing to back me up when I made a tactical decision on the fly as the situation in our battles changed.
Seriously, if a group makes you their strategist & repeatedly refuse your or ignore your suggestions in battle, you shouldn't be in that group. As that occurred VERY frequently, playing alone became my best option.
So no, it's not impossible. It's just rather unlikely.
same here :)
I really don't get the hate for this anime. There is so much shit anime out there, and sword art online is pretty damn entertaining. I recommended this anime to many people and they all loved it, of course I did warn them about the completely awkward and unnecessary bro/sis romance thing. I think the hate is biased because of all he stuff people read on forums and online and shit.
I 100% agree sure the show has down sides but its still a very good anime
Arkada mentioned everything Bad about SAO and thats easily enough to dislike it if These things are important to you
what the anime is on the left side of clannad at 12:43
Can I have the opinion that I really liked watching a wish fullfillment show, bc it made me feel warm inside?
