Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on UA-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
I have a disability and am married to my college sweetheart (we started dating prior to my disability). Even though my husband is wonderful and gives me no reason to doubt, I often find myself thinking why is he with me, why didn’t he choose a better life, etc. bc it seems so impossible that somebody would choose this (I know I didn’t haha). But seeing y’all’s relationship is such a comfort because I know there are other people out there who choose that life out of love, that my husband isn’t just being nice haha. Sounds stupid, I know. But I’m comforted all the same.
I hear you. I am in love with a man that has a disease where he is loosing more and more of his mobility week by week. Unfortunately he has pushed me away for two years.
I am sad because he is deeply depressed and has started to act out and every time we decide to meet up again (haven’t seen him for 2 years) he make up arguments out of nothing to point out why we could not work together. I know he doesn’t want to be alone either, but he says he didn’t chose to but had a divorce and therefore will be and has gotten used to it. And I feel like I’m missing out on the love of my life.
Anyone on this planet can be gone tomorrow. Whoever we love there are never any guarantees things will be “easy” or that the other person will stay healthy or even alive tomorrow or the next week ... Love is love. I love him for his personality, warmth and who he is. I am so happy for everyone who has a someone who loves them and cares for them. I love this man ... but unfortunately from a distance. I just wish we could sleep next to each other, but I can’t force him to let me back in :/.

@@mmichy Yes, thank you. Yes, I know. I focus on my life and to live it the best way I can, and I have short and long term goals I strive towards.
The comment I commented on made me think of the one I’ve had feelings for during this pandemic (which I think also may have made things harder with isolation rules and travel restrictions between countries).
I am open for meeting someone else and living my life the best way possible. And I hope he does as well (if not now hopefully another day).
I have bad days but I try to have good days. 😊

This is actually beautiful. Considering all of the pressure society puts on one another and our appearances, these two people managed to find love and happiness despite all obstacles... it makes me wonder why the rest of us make everything so complicated.

My husband passed away last year he was only 32 and very sick from heart and kidney failure and I took care of him every day when he couldn't even get out of bed .he was going blind in one eye and blind in the other so I was more so a caregiver .but I loved my husband with everything. True love will make you do anything no matter what it is because If you really love that person nothing is impossible

Spent many months in PT just to learn to walk by basically dragging his left leg . He was paralyzed when they met and they were married almost 40 years.
I just want to say thanks for showing us this night routine I thought it was really sweet watching you guy cuddle and be normal even though Shane is disabled to see the love in Hannah's eyes makes me believe that even though I'm disabled I could have that kind of love one day thanks again guys keep being awesome
Yes girly! You being disabled has nothing to do with your ability to have a true and loving relationship. 😊 I became paralyzed from basically my thighs down after breaking my back in a car wreck when I was 14. That was 15 years ago, and I have never been held back when it comes to dating and attracting a partner. I promise it starts with loving yourself and confidence! My confidence has never wavered, even after my injury.... I have always been a bit cocky (lol) and very comfortable with my body, paralyzed and all, and I feel that really attracts people to me. You have to learn to love yourself before you learn to love someone else! 💖

I have been in relationships before my disability. I haven't been in a meaningful relationship for the past 4 years. I pray I can find a person who will love and accept with my disability as well.
My heart can’t even put into words how amazing it is, that GOD put your souls on the same path to meet. You are a perfect example of what love is and should be. If only everyone could find a LOVE like this. Thanks so much for sharing your personal life. You both have the cutest personalities.

I also like to wear one of those neck pillows when I watch TV at night! It makes me feel so decadent not having to hold my head up... The pillow does all the work.

You remind me of my husband and me. We both have disabilities. I am not able to walk, but we are able to help each other. We have been together for 24 years and married 22 years. I feel blessed having my husband in my life. I wish we meet each other and share our experiences.

I love your videos. I developed cancer in 2016. The chemo damaged my heart and other areas of the body. My wife left about a year or so ago. I don't think she could handle all the health issues. I don't really blame her anymore. I have some good days and some really bad days. At this point in my life I know I will be alone. Who would want all the health issues to deal with. Then I see your videos and they give me a little hope. Thank you guys.

(I ended up leaving after 5 years because sadly, he was pretty emotionally abusive and didn't treat me well AT ALL... But it had nothing to do with his disability 😅 and he and I are both married to other people now.)

My mother worked at Genentech and we went to a huge party held for all the workers of the new cancer meds released by them in San Francisco. I got to see Matchbox 20 and others it was amazing.
I giggled when I heard Hannah say Groutfit! As a disabled person (and honestly just as a person) in the pandemic, I am embracing sweatpants and am frequently wearing a groutfit. y’all rock it! 💛

The windows/doors all around the dining table are gorgeous. My nutritionist and trainer says to have a protein shake before bed. Not 600 caloroies but he recommends protein about an hour before bed.

My health has changed my abilities, and I’m working on learning how to adapt and still live my life to the fullest, even though it may not look like I used to imagine. Wow, I stumbled upon this channel by accident and what I've come to see here between these two people is one of the most amazing things ever. I got my wife now to watch with me and it's just too much for words to describe how this makes one feel when u watch Hannah, how she truly cares for Shane and cherish every moment with him and nothing is too much for her to take care of his every need he has. Hannah, there must be a special place in heaven for you one day, we believe God will honor you for taking care of your disable husband in such an amazing way. Something about this video made me hopeful for life. When I saw Chloe on the couch I literally died with my jaw dropping to the floor, she is so precious I don’t think I understand how we deserve dogs. And she gets along well with Bella, she adapts to change and she’s so sweet and loyal. It melts my heart. Oh and the fact I could find love one day is nice too but less likely.
