I was in my sophomore year of highschool when this album came out and it never left my discman, everywhere I went it was blasting my skull 🤘💀🤘 Also learned the hard way, listening to Metallica while driving equals speeding tickets 😂
An all timer....and funny how you said he was ripping it up during the guitar solo. The lead guitarist is Kirk Hammett and his nickname is The Ripper...These guys were so far ahead of the game....
it supposedly has multiple meanings. relatively along the lines of a similar basis. early mcarthyism in the 50s which led to corruption, blacklisting of certain people. it also supposedly is about the death of their bassist cliff who died in a bus accident on tour, due to the fact he pulled a short straw for a specific bunk during the tour bus crash which inevitably led to his unfortunate death. the overarching theme is generally about the people who find themselves being stepped over in life, whether it be from an external force, oppressive government or even just the universe itself pulling the "shortest straw" for you, while others are given better hands.
The broad meaning of the song is about politicians in the US labeling things as "communist/socialist" to keep control of their power over the system and keep things from changing (healthcare/social changes, etc.) This was called the Red Scare in the 1940's-90s but still goes on today
According to the Metallica Wiki, the song "The Shortest Straw" is about the blacklisting of American politicians in the 1950s during the Red Scare (McCarthyism). The song's title may also refer to the death of bassist Cliff Burton, who was given his fatal sleeping bunk by drawing the shortest straw in a game of chance. McCarthyism was a period of political repression and persecution of left-wing individuals in the United States from the late 1940s to the 1950s. The term describes the practice of publicly accusing government employees of political disloyalty or subversive activities, and using questionable investigatory methods to prosecute them.
They didn’t draw straws, they cut cards and Cliff drew the Ace of Spades which means he won and had first choice of what bunk he wanted, he picked Kirk’s.
Incredible album front to back. Just one of metallica's masterpieces.
You have NO idea how hard this goes. 😎💯🤣
