- The Queen’s Indian Defense is an extremely strong opening system for black. It’s versatile, flexible, gives great attacking chances, and it doesn’t create many weaknesses.

In this introductory video on the Queen’s Indian we are going to be covering the basics of the opening, the plans and ideas for both sides, as well as common theoretical variations you have to be aware of. Each of these will then be covered in a detailed separate video.
The Queen’s Indian starts after 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 b6, but it could be reached by many different move orders, and many openings could transpose into it (the Nimzo, some English variations, the QGD, etc.). It’s an opening system rather than a separate opening. Unlike very theoretically strict openings like the Caro-Kann, the QID is a system because it’s the patterns and ideas that matter much more than the exact move orders.
You can enter the Queen’s Indian and then you play the system. You play the pawn breaks, you play for the known weaknesses and attacking maneuvers.
That is what makes it one of the most versatile and useful chess openings for black. It’s an opening you can play with little previous knowledge, but it can also be studied for years before being mastered. It can serve as a whole repertoire for black against d4.

Your videos are a very entertaining way of mastering every decent opening! thanks a lot for this dude you deserve sooo much more views
I really like the description and the fashion in which you go over the moves and the rationale. So many don't get to the point and go off on rants and variants. i really like your style of explanation.
Your opening overviews videos are always cool and lovely, thanks!!
Stjepane, svaka cast druze. Dobro si objasnio sve cak i nama pocetnicima.
Stjepane jako mi se sviđa kako obrađuješ otvaranja.Pratio sam dosta tvojih videa/playlisti i stvarno je izvrsno.Hvala na svemu ovo je neprocjenljivo.
Great video, I am looking forward to the whole upcoming serie, most to the polugaevsky gambit. Thanks for this content.
I was waiting for this. Thank you
thank you stjepan learning a lot from you and improving 💯
Awesome video as always! I would love to see a vid on book recommendations for openings : )
These videos are what I needed you are amazingly helpful!
I love your videos man. So simple and informative. Love from India!!
Just found the channel and I’m crushing with Queens Indian, thanks
Amazing. Looking forward for more queens indian defence videos
4:04 best part
I'm glad you're starting this series Stjepan and also excited that you're planning on doing a Dutch series as well. Will you eventually plan to look at the English as white?
he just did 2 years later
Very beautiful and great knowledgeable explanations sir. Thank you👍
Thanks for another instructive video series. I think your advice (around 9:40) to adopt a Queen's Indian set-up against any White response to the Nimzo-Indian Defense is very sound for most players. I've played the Nimzo-Indian for years, trying different variations at times and never quite knowing what I'm doing. For players below Master level, adopting one set-up (Queen's Indian) makes a lot of sense. Then, also playing QID against Nf3 is a system you'll already know. Learn it well and play it consistently.
How do you make these nice thumbnails? What are you using for thumbnails?
I use the chess pieces I got from my parents when I graduated college. And I combine them with all sorts of things:D
A camera
But that wasn't an Indian queen😂😂😂
Confirm. This channel has the best chess thumbnails.
It is worth it. The thumbnail was enough to subscribe 😆
I love your thumbnails so much! they are excellently done
Helped a lot! Thanks!
thank you so much for this upload
The best video I've watched that you have done.
Thank you so much for this
Yees!
I've been waiting for this video for several months. Thanks for covering that opening 🥰
No problem!
Finally...!!! Thanks a lot.
Great video !!!! Can’t wait for more
More coming tomorrow:D
been waiting for this one, its hard to find good material on it
I really like the work you are doing and the dedication you have! If you keep growing like that nothing can stop you of your dreams! :)
Thank you:)
Great video thanks.
best explained of all on yt :) thx
i've never thought much of the queen's indian, but i'll definitely consider playing it after this vid. not as a main choice, but it will make a good surprise weapon .thanks for this!
it makes a good pairing with the nimzo-indian
@@owencrawford5984 thats why decided to learn its theory deeply. I have started playing the Nimzo Indian but opponents go for the anti Nimzo often, Bogo-Indian is good but i really enjoy the Queen's Indian's Fianchettoed bishop
really helpful!
I know I am commenting on an old video, but I wanted you to know your opening explanations excellent.
Phenomenal!
Best chess vids on youtube. Maybe you fixed it, but do you have a shock absorber on your mic? I can really hear when you r punching the keys adjusting the board.
Love this!
I play Q Indian so I already knew a bunch of this, but always great to possibly learn more.
Just a few days ago, messing around with Stockfish with QI vs a London, I found a position where Stockfish recommended black to play Nc6-e7-g6. I'm skeptical of whether the maneuver is any good though, and I couldn't find any GM games showcasing it. Oddly, before the maneuver Stockfish claimed it was -0.8 but then after making the moves it reanalyzed it to +0.3 so really extra skeptical now. If one of your videos could spare a minute to give your opinion that would be interesting
Stejpan love ur videos. Can u plzz do a video abt the Ragozin defence from white Perspective ?
Second video this day and still high quality gj
I love the queen's Indian defense Rajesh attack variation
Will you ever go over the Old Indian Opening? I know its not that popular and there isn't too much theory, but its a solid "positional" and slow opening, which I kind of like because it provokes your opponents to be aggressive and sometimes overextend.
Plz make a series on kings indian attack for white
Do you have any videos on the K.I.A? If you don't, I would appreciate it if you made one!
Will you do a video on how to play the queens indian against the rapport-jobava london?
One of the best chess channels !
I can't wait to see this series about the QID.
Just note that a slight twitch in the move order enables Black to play QID against the Catalan with 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 b6., but you'll probably cover this point more in detail.
i think more common is to use the nimzo qid repertoire for black, and this accelerated move order doesn’t allow the nimzo
your room setup is nice
@Hanging Pawns can you do a Catalan series?
Are you from Croatia? Great video, keep up the good work
Thanks, very helpful. I was a little confused at @13:55, because you say "we already fianchettoed the bishop" and you have the bishop on g2 in the image, and you point at it while you say it. In reality the bishop is still on f1 at this point (since we are looking at responses to Ba6, and also playing e3 would do nothing to protect the pawn if the bishop was on g2). What I think you meant was that since g3 was already played, there are too many weaknesses. Am I understanding correctly?
I hope you do a series on the English Soon
can u do a vid on the stonewall defence for black plz love ur vids btw
I will do a whole series on the Dutch, yes.
stjepan can you cover the queens indian defence: the nakamura system?
Sir, will u make a video on english opening
Can you please make a Video about the Bogo Indian Defense
I asked you about this yesterday on Patreon. Thank you! Hahahaha
:D
Sir please cover English Opening
Are you playing on a video on the Catalan?
Hanging Pawns : Uploading too many videos per week
Me : Wait, that's illegal!?
It seems as though the QID is enhanced against the English since you can get in Nc6 before d4 and even go Na5 for a c5 break idea if d4 is pushed after. Is this a correct assessment?
Can i play knight c3 on move 3 allow the nimzo indian to avoid queens indian as white?
Against 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 (the Catalan), I play 3...c5. That's a sideline but I still think it's playable, I would appreciate if later on you could cover this line too.
Have a nice weekend Stjepan!
I'll do a series on the Catalan and cover all the lines. I just like the a6 open myself.
@@HangingPawns Ok, good to know :)
So this means you're back to opening series? =O
Yes. With the virus still around, I may as well get back to the normal schedule. I only reduced it because I wanted to focus on chess. So when it comes back, I'll do it again.
Is the accelerated QID (2... b6 instead of 2... d6) a good way to avoid the Catalan in this opening? Or is there some other downside to that move order?
There is no catalan anyway all with d4 Nf3 g3 for white will transpose to the g3 lines of QID, if you play 2...b6 than you have also option of 4...B×f3 if 3.g3 is played e.g. 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 b6 3.g3 Bb7 4.Nf3 B×f3. But white can play 2.Nf3 or even 2.g3 and he is fast enough to stop you from ruining his pawn structure. But after 2...b6 white can also play for a big center with 3.Nc3 as there is no Bb4 pin and after 3...Bb7 4.Qc2 (also 4.f3!?) 4...e6 5.e4 Bb4 6.Bd3 (also 6.f3!?). So all in all 2...b6 has more downsides than upsides, and as I have already said after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Bb7 (or 4.Ba6!?) there is no catalan anyway. And if whites want to play some accelarated catalan after 1.d4 Nf6 2.g3!? then you can strike in the center with 2...c5 or 2...e6 3.Bg2 c5 with a good position because white hasn't played c4 yet and maybe has to play c3 right now. I hope this will help you, gl in your chess.
@@jaroslavpors6559 Ok! Thanks for the analysis. That helps a lot. I may have to switch my move order! For whatever reason, I haven't seen a lot of 4. Qc2 or 4. f3 in my QID games, but they definitely seem like lines worth avoiding for black.
Great video, what's the reason b6 is rarely played on move 2 instead of e6?
sorry for the late answer, but the original idea from nimzowitsch, who invented/popularized the openings was to play the nimzo indian against nc3 and the qid against nf3, the move e6 keeps the nimzo as a possibility. these two openings together are a very common repertoire for black.
It shows your cards too early, white can play 3 f3 which i find very annoying as e4 is reinforced and black is cramped
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess
:D
Ive been playing the dutch opening a lot and having succes but im low rated(1000) so I think I will try this opening to see if it suits me :)
The QID is similar in some ways, but it's way more flexible. Should be an improvement.
@@HangingPawns Good to know! What do you think about the english opening for beginners like me?I've been playing it a lot recently because I started getting really bored of e4-e5 openings.
Is the Queens Indian as playable against King’s pawn openings?
4:04 both side are going to fart 😂😂. Joke aside best chess channel
What about C5 and d5 breaks?
Whats the difference/Pro/Con of the queens indian defense vs kings indian defense? Which one do you perfer vs which white opening? And which one do you suggest for a 1400 player to learn?
Kings indian defense is quite hard with a lot of tight lines whereas the Queens is more a system. So i reckom QID is more reccomendable for a low rated player
Doesnt this just transpose into a classical dutch?
Hello, my name is Alex and i wanted to say your putting up amazing content but you can avoid the catalan with 2.b6 not 2.e6 thats a of avoiding the nimzo and the catalan (avoiding the nimzo so you dont have to learn it). (and the catalan because its just soo much theory and why would you allow your oponnent to get a ultra solide setup.
this is technically a different opening, the accelerated queens indian, and many people playing the queens indian are only doing it because they can’t play the nimzo. the nimzo and qid were originally designed to be a complete d4 repertoire before the catalan was popularized, but many people are planning to play a nimzo before playing a qid.

Can I played against e4 ?
I love your videos and appreciate them. I, of course, want you to make money off of them, but there are so many commercials that it really interrupts the flow of the tutorial. Perhaps you could cut back on them a tad? They're literally every few minutes. Thanks for considering, and for all that you do!
Notification gang
What would I do if I wanted to learn openings 2 years ago...
I see people playing the Bogo Indian but not the Queen's Indian
You said you made a video on the London system against the queens Indian, but I don't see it in your London System Playlist. Is it a shorter part of the kings indian?
ua-cam.com/video/S_OYdWbJMKM/v-deo.html
“It’s the second most popular move but people don’t really play it”
Did you already make a Queen’s Indian defense video?
Yeeeeesssss I was thinking about the Bogo-Indian or QGD already because I found no helpful material on this
Do you offer lessons? If so, connect with me
might be the best like dislike ratio on the internet
MP says this is funny
both sides are going to fart 4:03
Your videos used to be very fun to watch, however recently they've been so full of ads and it's getting very frustrating to follow the ideas (had to endure 6 ads during this one). To be honest right after posting this comment I'm going to search for some other source of chess tutorials (which is unfortunate considering how informative your materials are).
Honest comment : your accent is quite different ,if you can speak little bit louder and clear it would be wonderful
Thanks
