I was at almost 300 lbs after years in a wheelchair, depressed, and not willing to try. Then, I hated what i became. I learned to walk again (not easy), cooked everyday, got a gym membership with a trainer, and only 5 years later I am 120 lbs and been there steady for the last 1 1/2 years. After 2 heart attacks in one day, and a stroke caused by eating too much junk and being lazy, I now have energy, and my doctors don’t worry about me dropping dead at any time. I worked hard to get here, and I share my story every chance I get. And no medication needed to lose it.

There are two components to weight loss in my mind. One, finding what works for you to lose weight in a healthy manner and two, doing it consistently. Awesome that you have clearly found what works for you! Added bonus if your goals aren’t solely based on weight but function or size so that backsliding or temporary gains from water or muscle don’t Shanghai your momentum. It helps if you have a purpose other than just appearance too. I have saggy belly skin left over but I feel so much better. My husband and I changed our lifestyle together, starting with just setting time aside for us to walk and talk. Fast forward a year, and we are now stronger and faster in our 40s than we were in our 30s and have dropped a combined 130 pounds.

So, kind of weird, but I’ve lost 40 lbs in the last year - NOT through ozempic, but through discipline, lots of water, and dissociating “comfort” eating from sustenance eating. The funny thing is that given the descriptions of what it’s like on ozempic, that’s oddly similar to the way it feels once I’d gotten used to eating less (in quantity and in frequency). I haven’t done anything different, except just eat when I’m actually, truly hungry, but if I eat outside of those boundaries it’s usually nauseating for me.

I am diabetic with a lot of trouble controlling my blood sugar with diet and insulin alone. I was prescribed Ozempic about 6 months ago. It was hard for my doctor to get my prescription filled because so many people were using it for weight loss. It has helped me get my blood sugar under control. It is a brutal drug for a lot of people, myself included. It is taken once a week. For the first 24 hours after taking it, I spend vomiting. After that, I have to be very careful about what I eat. Most foods make me nauseated. Salad is not an option. I have acid reflux now. I am constipated for the first time in my life. I have lost weight as a side effect. My doctor insists I stay on it because of that and because my average blood sugar has been significantly lower. I have been going to the gym 5-6 days a week for years, but that did not help. Ozempic has done what it was prescribed to do. But it is very unpleasant. I have to remind myself to drink enough fluids, and I literally dread eating.

    • @PeteRamondetta
      @PeteRamondetta Рік тому +3

Melanie, acid reflux is one of the side effects. I was taking Tums for it, but after my blood work came back-with mostly great results, it showed my calcium to be a bit high. I told my doctor about the reflux and the Tums, and he recommended Prilosec instead to reduce it. I take that when needed and my calcium levels are now normal. And you are correct, the rest of the side effects (nausea & vomiting) are extremely unpleasant. For me, that went away after about two months - once I learned to listen to the signals my body gave me when eating. I learned to limit my intake of heavy foods like fried or greasy foods as well. I can't explain it, but when I eat, my body actually signals to me when to stop. If I don't listen to that signal, I would risk vomiting again. Good Luck!

Some people need this drug, they need to lose an ungodly amount of weight in order to survive. Going on a diet isn't really an option for them, they either lose 50-100kg in the next few months or they die. No amount of salad leaves and juice cleanses will do as much for them as a couple pricks of ozempic.

Same. My concern with any medication administered to someone who doesn’t need it is how it will affect the body long term. Nerves and neurons have fluctuating values for where a nerve impulse will trigger, think how a loud noise after quiet hurts but that same volume in a crowded room isn’t a problem. Meth is a good example of a drug that permanently resets the brain neurons to a higher dopamine trigger which is why so few people kick it. Use it long enough and normal stuff, like your kid hugging you, won’t make you feel anything. I am lucky enough to have my hubby on my journey too. We started just by prioritizing time to walk and talk about our day together. We now hit the gym most every night, not necessarily doing the same routine but kind of kicking each other in the butt if we start slacking because thankfully we haven’t had a simultaneous ugh, gym moment. You are right that it sucks a little sometimes but Chris Pratt put it well. He said he could eat how he wanted and not exercise, be happy while he was eating and feel like crap the rest of the time, or have foods that were for fuel, workout and feel great the rest of the time.

I love Brett pointing out things no one likes to talk about. As a US Veteran and being large. I get told by the Doctors about my weight. Finally, I got tired of it as the Doctor had a bit of a pot belly. So he didn't like me pointing it out. So I have walked miles in a day for.months at a time while going to the gym. Yet, something is wrong and I can't lose the weight. I am 6'1 and around 270ish pounds. Yet, back in 2011 I was 200 and didn't get VA benefits. I was working a job that paid above minimum wage as I went toget my Bachelor's degree in visual communications. I was always moving at the job and then after graduation getting a sedative job. So ever since then weight has been an issue. So I can understand why some of them feel the drug is a resort. I wouldn't take it myself. I think some get into the mindset they become unhealthy obsessed with a number on a machine to tell them how their body is. They throw out reason and want a quick fix even if it will kill them in the long run. While you have others, like.me for example, got a severe neck and brain injury who can't lose weight due to their body chemistry was screwed up when they got the injury. When they do go to the gym for hours at a time, months go by and they are on a cycle of weight loss to only get all the weight back with no explanation. Just their bodies just decide to make too much cortisol despite nothing in the routine or food changing back to an unhealthy lifestyle. This can slowly destroy some people. Their body is actively counter productive due to glands being damaged and never healing correctly in the line of duty. I am not sure what's the reasons it happens. the doctors can't tell me even when spending weeks at a time in one after getting stroke symptoms and rushed to a emergency room. My chiropractor can't adjust something to revitalize the glands. Even going out and touching grass daily, walking around the neighborhood, going to a gym and putting in the effort, eating way more nutritious and living foods (raw and cooked non-processed food), intermittent fasting to est in a four hour window, and more for months on end just to randomly get it back for no reason is just a horror no one would have to live with. That does happen for what ever reason. I don't know the story behind some of the people. I just kbow we all have pain that we hide from the world. I wish we didn't have a world that make the pain worse by dumping on you when you are wanting to be healthy and lose weight. Just wanting to lose weight and loving yourself has turned into something that is actively attacked by those happy in their morbid obesity. So at that point when your body is rejecting the work you put in and the left is osterizing you for even doing it, then I can see why some would turn to the pill. I can also see why you reach out and help those by giving opinions when most are canceled when speaking up. Don't stop fighting or pushing against them and people like me won't stop supporting you.

How many calories do you eat per day? If you aren't keeping a log of it, then you can't be sure.
Start logging calories if you don't. Search for a tdee calculator online to get started.
For you I inpit these general values:
      Male, 40yrs, 270lbs, 6'1, moderate exercise.
To lose weight you should be eating 2400 to 2900 calories per day.
If your exercise is not significant (walking is light exercise, not sure what you do at the gym), you need to categorize differently and choose "light exercise" instead of moderate exercise.
Remember, if you are doing strength workouts, you will be gaining weight if you are not eating low calorie. For this reason you should also take neck, chest, waist, hip, and thigh measurements. If your weight is not decreasing but your measurements are this means you are losing fat and gaining muscle. If your weight is increasing, but your measurements are not this means you are gaining muscle and retaining fat.
Hope this helps. It is rare fore someone to actually be "unable" to lose weight. It is more common that someone does not understand all the mechanisms behind what is happening and is messing up somewhere or misunderstanding somewhere.
Though remember, being overweight with muscle can also be hard on the body, so if you find that you are retaining fat and gaining muscle, or losing fat and gaining muscle, you should still consider cutting calories back (again, you must keep log of everything you eat and the caloric value) to lose overall weight to help preserve your joints.

What I didn't handle well was having to be without medication for a week straight, which with my level of ADHD is incredibly hard and the only reason my grades didn't drop much is that I am blessed with amazing understanding teachers. I was prescribed ozempic after I gained 20kg in a year because of birth control. I was dieting hard, I go to the gym every day, and the birth control fucked my hormones so bad I developed cysts in my ovaries. I’ve been in it since January, I got down 10kg since and my doctors have told me that they’re gonna take me off it by June. It also helps me regulate my insulin cause I’m super insulin sensitive ( my insulin spikes very quickly when I eat and suddenly drops ). I’m not from the US, it’s not that expensive in my country and we get factory discounts. Ozempic works very nicely if you continue with a doctor checking on you and doing gradual dose increases, most of those people gaining all the weight back or doubling the weight are dosing it and stopping it on their own.

As someone who gained weight regardless of diet change/eating right...obesity is a huge issue that is often marginalized as "diet and exercise issue". I had gone my entire life into my 30s struggling with weight gain even though my calorie intake was less than 1-1.5k a day. Finally diagnosed with PCOS after having 3 kids (doc finally believed me and checked hormones and wasnt menstruating at all with cysts on the ovaries) I had ballooned up to morbid obesity.....Finally started losing weight with metformin...once the insulin resistance issue had been addressed I dropped over 50lbs within 6 months AND counting down the scale still. Doc and i have discussed ozempic for purposes of stabilizing everything....am not diabetic but have a hormone/insulin or what has been described to me as a metabolic issue that if left untreated will turn into diabetes . Just saying all of this so maybe someone else struggling could get checked out too. Turns out I had pcos growing up but no one ever thought to check. Metabolic issues are just as devastating as diabetes itself. It's no less devastating than diabetes nor should it be less prioritized. Keeping people from becoming diabetic now will help alleviate the need for many of our population to need the medication down the road.

When you have insulin resistance, your body basically takes everything you consume and turns it into fat instead of expelling it like its supposed to. Even though I was doing cardio 5-6 days a week anything consumed was basically all I was burning off. The only thing that I changed after the metformin was drinking half my weight in water. Just recently started keto because it's supposed to be good for people with PCOS. So far I'm liking it..but since I'm never hungry it is really hard to get enough calories and protein in every day.

Sure. It's super easy. Which is why 40% of the population are obese, and that number is growing every year.
In reality weight loss is pretty simple, but certainly not easy for most people. Calories in vs calories out is perfectly true - but when you're 100lbs over weight, and your diet is crap, and you're over producing ghrelin because being obese has screwed up your hormone system, it becomes a lot harder to maintain a calorie deficit for a long period of time.
And that problem only gets bigger over time.

Dropped 40 over the age of 40. I think there is a difference between calling out a behavior that harms others (using a drug that diabetics rely on, causing a shortage, to get a quick fix because you are lazy) and putting someone down. Second, the mental issue absolutely does needs to be addressed. It’s 90% of why people gain weight back, because they don’t address underlying causes, like boredom eating. That is why this should not be allowed. Health consequences for using a drug that is not meant for you could be severe and if you aren’t changing anything, will provide no measurable long term benefit. Lastly, doctors, just like all of humanity are not created equally. Make sure they aren’t overly quick to prescribe and they are clear on your particular risk factors. You do you, absolutely, but don’t make me responsible or expect me to feel bad for someone else’s poor choices.

Weight is always a hard topic for me. Since I was roughly 11 or 12, I've struggled with weight and have had numerous eating problems, whether they were full blown eating disorders or not. I've gone on both ends of the spectrum, from binge eating and sugar addiction to going multiple days without eating a thing. Because of all those pressures, I've only recently been able to work back into a "healthy" eating schedule that doesn't involve eating less than 500 calories a day. I'm deficient in most vitamins and have a lot of joint and chronic pain problems. I'm about 50 lbs overweight currently. The reason I couldn't lose weight was a mix of those extremes messing up my metabolism and having a genetically slow metabolism. The only time I've ever been able to lose weight in my entire life was when I went on Adderall for my ADHD.
It's easy to look at someone overweight like me and say that it's all due to bad habits. That may be true for some people but it's not true for everyone. You can't just see someone that's overweight and be able to tell them to go to the gym or eat better because sometimes that is not the cause. There are so many underlying factors that could play into it. Some people just get dealt crappy hands and have to work 10 times as hard to get the same sorts of results you see.

I was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes 25 years ago at age 40. I am 5'6" and was 189 lbs at the time. Over the ensuing years I lost some weight by working out (weights & bootcamp) and adjusting my eating habits. I got down to 176 lbs and hit a plateau. My A1C was still over 8.0, so recently my Endocrinologist recommended Ozempic. I started it in Nov. 2021 and after 6 months, I'm still 5'6" but now weigh 150 lbs. More importantly though, my A1C dropped to a 6.2 and my LDL (bad cholesterol) dropped from a whopping 190 to 68! The side effects were horrendous - nausea and vomiting at least once per dose - and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't need it. It's not for the faint of heart.
What Ozempic does is it suppresses your apetite and causes your system to digest food more slowly, so you feel full faster and don't eat as much. If you learn from that, you shouldn't revert back to "binge" eating after getting off of it. I am being weaned off and I still work out 2-3 times a week. I choose NOT to be fat ever again. It's really meant to help people with Diabetes - it is a wonder drug in that respect. However, since heavy, non-diabetics are doing it for weight loss only, it's now in short supply. I resent that. If you do not have Diabetes, please don't take Ozempic - let those who really need it get it.

For those wanting a natural form of Ozempic, yerba mate is a herb that you can drink as a tea, which will stimulate natural increase of GLP-1, the peptide that Ozempic (semiglutide) is supposed to mimic.
