    Great video. I am 82. I flew on a friend's Beechcraft D-18 once, back in 1962 from Buenos Aires to Montevideo. Nice, night 50' flight.

    Speed management is the key kids. As you can tell he's not pulling that many Gs or stressing his engines. He launches himself by constantly diving and building the speed he needs to propel him through the desired maneuvers. Pretty cool in that old school twin beech. He's a great pilot for sure.

  • @brickjockey4216
    @brickjockey4216 6 років тому +2

    Ditto on everyone's comments on this guy's flying chops...he's pretty damn comfy tossing around a Beech 18. My first thought once he was airborne was that those two engines hanging out there were not the stock radials that came with that Beechcraft....they sounded much different and seemed to be providing some super responsive power. I used to live very close to the South Expressway airport just off Tara Blvd. or Griffin Hwy, somewhat near Jonesboro, Ga. and some outfit ran a freight business outta that airport using a couple of Beech 18's. They had one that left about midnight and loped over my house almost nightly, and that radial sounded mucho el straino hauling a heavy load skyward. Obviously flying empty with one person on board will make the engines sound so different, but I would just bet some tuning had been appropriated on those puppies. Really cool to watch a man do such sweet "stick and rudder" moves on a very iconic and vintage flying machine. Way to be, Mr. Matt Younkin, you are the man.

    The lack of a shoulder harness here is very distressing. It's not for negative g, it's used because it's literally the ONLY thing keeping your head and upper body from slamming into the instrument panel and yoke in a crash or even an unexpected sudden stop during landing (brakes fail, gear collapses, deer run out on the runway...) This is so important that the EAA actually required members in the early days to sign a pledge to never fly in a plane without wearing a shoulder restraint.
    I respect Matt a ton, but I think this is not a good decision and one I find hard to understand.

    Two questions that I thought of while watching this:
    1). What is the reason for the occasional rapid control corrections (e.g. shortly after 7:30): chop/turbulence?
    2). What control is Matt often reaching for with his right hand down near the floor of his seat: elevator trim?
    Thanks!
