  • It's been a long time coming I know, but finally, after almost 10 weeks Kawasaki came up trumps and supplied the missing cam chain tensioner spring allowing me to complete the repairs to the little Sherpa.
In this video I install the cam chain adjuster, check chain tension & valve timing again. Install the rocker cover, carb & other remaining parts.
We get the bike up & running, set idle and sign this job off.
If you have any questions then please add them to the comments section below & I'll get back to you just as soon as I can.

Twitch. Thank you for reminding me of the nightmare of working on an inline 4 where each carb had a floppy rubber boot going to the air box and the intake. It was like trying to thread 8 angry earthworms into 8 needles at once. In a box. Around a corner.

Thanks for the great job producing these videos on the Super Sherpa since it takes a lot of effort. I'm thinking of purchasing one of these bikes so Ifound the videos to be of high quality and very informative.

I enjoyed the series. My wifes Sherpa is experiencing the same issue. Took it to Kawasaki, they want $1200 CDN plus tax for Im guessing the same repair. Had the carb rebuilt last year by them, so I dont think its that. Put a new plug in, has spark & putting some gas down the bore doesnt help. Tries to fire but wont run, I will pick it up from them this weekend & give it a go myself.

I have a very puzzling problem with my bike. Only 16 000 km, bought new, always state of the art tuned and maintained . I drive it with care and never push it to its limits. I'm the only driver and noboby else has access to that bike. That bike always give a great service and satisfaction until 2 weeks ago, as I noticed that the engine oil was low. I always used Motul 4w40 Synthetic oil. So I filled up back until the oil level was full and went back on the road. After only 65 km, I checked back the engine oil level and the oil level had dropped to the half. Thinking the oil filter could be in trouble and making the engine oil pressure to open the oil pressure relief valve causing oil to be burned, I changed the oil and the oil filter. I filled back the engine with the requested 4.6 L of Motul 4w40 Synthetic. One hour later in the garage, while the engine did'nt run, at my surprise, the oil level was less than the milldle of the oil stick. I filled up back, adding 1 more liter of oil. I runned the engine for a couple of minuts to be sure that the new OEM oil filter would be full. Then I went home to sleep. The next morning, I went to the garage and once again the engine oil level was a bit over the minimum. I added again oil. Now I filled up my bike with a total of 6 liters of engine oil even the user manuel and the service manual say that it takes not more that 5.1 Liters when the engine is completly dry. That bike don't leak, never leaked and doesn't smokes when I drove it for testing in order to discover why that engine oils is disappearing. Where that oil can go into the engine, if it is not burned, it doesn't go on the ground ? Does somebody from you have a clue to help me. Thank you very much. It's a 2013 Nomad 1700 cc. I would appreciate any idea that could help solve this puzzling mechanical situation.

Hello Andy, thank you for the great videos. I just ordered a new cylinder head for my Super Sherpa and learning while waiting for the parts. I have a question regarding the TDC mark on the flywheel. When cams are lined up, the mark on my flywheel is at F rather than TDC. And now that the head is removed, I can see easily that the piston is flush with the top of cylinder but at the F mark rather than the TDC mark. Do you have any insight on this? Thank you!

Hey I noticed a mistake with the way you installed the chain tensioner. Or maybe you deleted a portion of the video?
You are actually missing a large spring that goes in before the bearing assembly. What you do is:
1)Back the small screw out on the side.
    2) put the large spring in
3)Use something to push the bearing (only the bearing) down over the spring all the way to the bottom.
4)Screw the small screw back in to lock the bearing down on the spring.
5)Place the bearing-shell-thingy over the bearing with the flat side facing out.
    6) Install long spring in the middle
7)Put the cap on. (This will push the plunger is and making a sound as well)
8)Back out the small until you hear THAT click then put it back in.
    Done
The bearing and its little cylinder-friend are actually a one way clamping deal that prevents the shaft from sliding back. Its so that the safety of your entire motor (and life) doesn't rely on that tiny little spring and V-groove alone.
Its in the service manual and I just did mine. The larger spring is actually not listed on any online parts websites I looked at.

My 02 super Sherpa is smoking white smoke on start up then it goes away. What do you think I should check?

It could as simple as water vapour in your exhaust when you let it sit overnight. Or if it has a oily smell to it, it's probably valve seals
