Another important thing is to have a theme that fits with the environment. Sometimes players go to big and struggle to give it shape or decorate it, in my personal experience it's easier to keep it small and pretty.
Experimentation is key to making better buildings. I was definitely guilty of building a "box" each time I started a new base. I forced myself to start making something other than a box. I started hexagons and/or pentagons attached to a "box" but made them extremely functional on the inside. Then I started thinking of convenient pathways inside and added doorways, elevators, balconies, jetties, patios and so on. I also made sure to incorporate the landscape to help with a non "box" design, especially when doing multi-level buildings instead of building on a flat piece of land. Build on a slope or next to a cliff or over a gap/river. Forcing myself not to build a "box" helped me make better building designs and building is that much more fun now.
Thanks for the material. Sometimes a small building with flat walls and a simple roof is quite enough and fits into the surrounding style of the rest of the settlement. However, in the case of larger and larger buildings, flat walls start to look terrible, and thanks to your videos I have learned not to leave them like that. Sometimes a few pillars, a thickening or a support with a small roof are enough to give the wall a better and more attractive appearance. Sometimes I'm surprised that you waste so much space on additions that have no usable space, thus taking up a lot of space, but then I decide that it's a good compromise and at the expense of several occupied fields, we get an interesting and balanced building.
Glad you enjoyed it Piotr! Yeah there's a time and a place for everything tbh, sometimes just a simple build is all that's needed, but the problem does exacerbate as builds get larger. I'm well aware that I sometimes waste space, it's probably not the most practical choice most of the time, but I'm all about the aesthetics 😂
"Roofing is hard to learn, hard to explain, and it's something that takes a good while to feel out." Possibly the truest statement you've made in this video. It can also be glitchy and sometimes outright absurd, like when you have to place floor tiles for enough stability to get the roof tiles to snap, but then can delete the floor tiles without losing the roof tiles. For newer builders, KEEP trying to figure out how to place that roof tile, sometimes there is an unnatural logic in how you have to get there. It can be frustrating but it's very satisfying when you get it to snap OR figure out a workaround that looks better than your original plan.
God roofing is my worst enemy in basically EVERY game, from survival games to sims. It's taken years and years of practice to get something to look even half-decent let alone good, and I feel like I still sometimes have my one-roof moments.
Roofing is generally super hard, it was the one aspect that took me the longest to get a proper handle on. Fortunately, it's also one of those things you never really forget
I'm close to hitting 2500 hours in Conan, and I made all three of these mistakes at different times. You are absolutely right; it takes time and experimentation (and perhaps watching your videos - lol) to learn how to expand your builder's toolbox and add more and more complex additions to your buildings. I hope we eventually get some Shemite Love. The Ziggurats I've been building after another Chorf Campaign in total warhammer are kind of sad without glorious tall hats.
I'm not exactly a conan noob but I will say that I often mess up trying to create something that fits all the advanced stations as a "main" base". For example in F5 on the northern side next to the Bat Tower I tried to create a Japanese themed castle. The goal was a base that was functional, had a two-three horse stable and could at least defend low/mid tier purges, the fit is tight so I keep ending up either needing a dozens of "guards" or an annoying maze to funnel the herd. The problem with the maze is it makes using horses a nightmare, would love to see your take on that someday if possible.
You've found my weakness 😩 Japanese builds are usually my weakest, though probably just because I've spent more time studying medieval, I could likely make something like you've described work. You made a very good point though, trying to do everything in one build is a pretty mammoth task, it requires a lot of planning, adaptation, or just building a giant box 😂
The trick if you don't want to build a purge base separate is to build a second entrance. Prior to doing a purge take out the door and replace the doorframe with a wall, then switch it back after you are done purging. If you have a grand large entrance build a wall around the gateframe so you don't risk having the side of your base lose stability and fall. Anyway if there is a wall and not a door the AI doesn't view it as an entrance and won't attack in that direction.
The default roof tiles are good but sometimes are faaar too steep for certain builds. They need to let you be able to adjust the incline. Ive been trying to rectify an issue in my main base because roof tiles are too steep for what im trying to do and result in far too much empty space
It's an annoyance that I think Valehim understood really well, that game had steep and shallow roofing. Quite a few mods have shallow roof pieces too, they're a game change. I've learned to work with the regular ones, but if they put some shallow roofs in future build sets, I'd be very happy to see them
@@Eradicati0nn yes! i was actually thinking of valheims roofing and it definitely gave tons of flexibility an options. i honestly really dont like valheim i think the combat and overall character control is terrible but the building (most of it atleast, building with stone has some flaws) and the open ocean sailing they did right
Even today I love the esthetic of circular towers as part of the build, but my biggest problems were (and are) that the benches are almost all very square.
We've all been there, I've built countless boxes 😂 My secret has always been just attaching multiple smaller boxes together, I think it's a pretty good way to learn more interesting shapes & structures
Hey we've all had the cube phase 😂 to be honest it's better to at least have a base as opposed to not, but someone interested in doing a little more can easily improve from a box to... well, basically a more glorious box, that's all buildings are really 😂
But...flat walls are how you build walls. You can't have alcoves and divots and blind spots built into your walls that enemies can hide in. Besides, have you ever tried to build a hoarding over a a wall that has a bunch of buttresses and the like on the outside? Nah, high flat walls are how you keep the barbarians out.
Very true for PvP, you don't wanna build like this when other players can blow you apart. Purges are much different though, seeing as you can essentially control how they attack. Building specifically for purge optimization is a different topic tho, this is mainly focused on more aesthetic/RP building
With the problem of the game crashing on Xbox when there seems to be alot of animation, I think I'll only use Conan as a build game to just fart around in.
Consoles are always getting a rough deal 😩 No idea what the problems are there, whether its QA, the hardware, spaghetti code or a combination of them all. At least Conan's one of the best building games out there
Try building a separate purge base. Keep your coffer no higher than the 2nd floor. Make sure there is flat land around you that isn't land claimed. Those things help a lot, furthermore if it's just a purge base redesigning it is less aggravating than the beautiful structure that you built to call home.
@@seamusoconaill8265 thx and yes sure it´s just a purge but it is part of the game and it is so sad that have to build , as you said, severeal bases or deal with it. i try the flat lands of siptah, the EL desert always the same :( after finishing no purge. i will try some stuff. one smal base with * the basics*, one with animal stuff, one with thrall stuff and so on.. Instead of one base, a huge city

However this doesn't need to become a city. I have a 5X5 tower with a short maze as a killbox in the front. I like to build in a medieval style so it's easy for me to incorporate it as a tower on the backside or make a separate base that's off my main which doesn't take a lot of space. I mean you could really build a 2 story 2 row circle with the maze in front and that would work well with smart thrall placement and short leashes. I do however suggest that you put the coffer with whatever level purge gold inside of it down and put everything else in a separate room blocked by a door. They come for the coffer, but never search other rooms for everything else if they get in.

It would be really helpfull if you have * radius thingy* to check you will have a purge or not...
Ok, now let's see the interior of those example bases. I agree with form over function, but you can not really say that these are enough for all the crafting stations and furniture.
No, they likely won't fit all the stations, but the example are contextualized in the early game or the beginning stages of a base. Get a good start to end up with a good finished result. You can also easily continue to expand on a good base design to make extra space, though I didn't touch on expansion here, as we're tackling core structural issues. You also don't need to put everything under a single roof, it's much nicer aesthetically to spread things out within your territory

Early on I would mostly build circular towers with multiple floors.
We've all had our circular tower phase 😂 Though unfortunately they come with a multitude of their own problems
