Mario & Luigi Bowser’s Story. It was my first game and I actually still need to play the remake haha
Superstar Saga. Grew up with it
If the European version is called Mario & Luigi: Brothership Bros I'm gonna lose my mind
Thankfully its not 😅
That doesn't even sound bad. Dream Team Bros. is dumb, but the alliteration in Broship Bros. is better than the actual title.
@@jjjabbersbrother ship bros doesn’t not sound right at all the normal title already explained things well brother ship bros doesnt sound right
I think it’s a good title
I'm dying. Haha.
I think the main reason they went with a black outline is to capture one of the most distinctive parts of the box art for the mario and luigi series. Nintendo wants you to look at this game and instantly recognize it as mario and luigi as opposed to some other mario spinoff, and the black outline is a feature that is very identifiable to this series. Everyone knew this game was mario and luigi as soon as the characters popped up on screen with their unique hand painted textures, cartoony black pupils, and the black outline.
Good observation and perspective. I'd say they succeeded very well.
Which makes it strange to me that the outlines were absent from the in-game sprites in the 3DS entries.
i still wish the hat emblems were black still cause i think it looks really good but for some reason they strayed away from that, i assume for continuity or something but ehh
@@kenji6492 i never even thought about this before lol
@@qje3204 Same ✊😔
The squash and stretch was so peak bro
Absolutely. I just realised if you pause right before Luigi gives a jump boost to Mario, he is extra noodly and stretchy. The animations are so brilliantly expressive here.
One thing I like about the game is that the outlines seem to be dynamic. In sections with the far away camera they look thicker and more like the gameboy and DS sprites, but in comparison when they’re close up or in cutscenes they look almost identical to the style of the boxart. I don’t know how they change that thickness but it’s so good when they pan out. I’m absolutely ecstatic for this game
Great observations. It really does give a sense of hand drawn art. The developers did a brilliant job here.
it seems to be a specific outline size regardless of distance, as well as other rendering methods that are often used in anime games
As a game dev myself, seeing this was great! XD Great commentary, and you spotted more than I had!
But yeah, I was utterly delighted at the stretchiness of the characters. Perfect Art direction,
When you talked about the shading I assumed they were going to do something like BOTW did with trees-when the camera is far enough away it turns each tree into a 2d image with bumpmaps that simulate a fully-3d tree, which allows them all to look consistent no matter what time of day it is. I was VERY surprised to hear the shading is painted on! Nice analysis
I like the stretching gum-gum powers used in this game because in Dream Team they really leaned into making them stretchy and the 2D-game-going-3d would not have maintained the dynamic feel these games have if they didn't stretch the characters like what was done in Dragon Ball FighterZ
Thank you for watching. Aren't the animations here such a delight? I'm looking forward to seeing even more. The trailer feels too short!
Awesome to see a trailer analysis from a technical perspective!
Most analyses just go over designs and speculation as to which characters and mechanics could be seen, but things like this make gamers better appreciate the work that goes into making games.
Btw, I think the term you're looking for for the stylized shading done with darker colors is 'Hue Shifting'. In which, instead of darkening the standard color, you move it down on the color slider in an editing program to an adjacent, darker one.
I like how you explain the development side of things in layman's terms.
Yes, Hue Shifting seems to be a good way to describe that. Thank you for watching and commenting on the video. I have more coming soon!
4:49 Long Mario
I really love the squash and stretch and all that in the animations
Come on, Long Mario playable DLC.
Loving these analysis from a developer standpoint, Jerrel!
Superstar Saga is my favorite followed closely by Bowser's Inside Story.
I'm glad you're enjoying these! I'm a Bowser fan so I like Inside Story.
@@sungrandstudios I love BIS, it was my first RPG. ☺️ It was so cool to play as Bowser. SHOWTIME! 👺
Bro I watched both these videos and I love them…. I feel like we need more content like this. And I looked at your channel, and it seems like this content is doing well for you! Would love to see more videos like this from you. Also you explain things very well and help us non game developers actually understand what you are talking about in an easy way to understand. Thats a talent my guy, and I think you have it!
I was so happy to see this reveal to be honest. The Mario and Luigi games are pretty much the first RPGs I experienced and they were fantastic, even the bad ones I’d say like Paper Jam which I still remember pre ordering eagerly on Amazon. After AlphaDream went bankrupt, I thought we’d never see a return for the series. Good to know I was wrong!
Ironically, the 3DS Mario & Luigi games actually ditched having the black outlines that were in all of the previous games
That's actually why I never gravitated towards them as much. The series is so zany. You need the cartoon line for it.
Huh, I never noticed that. That's ironic. I can only think they would have do that to maximize performance since the outline does have a performance cost.
my question is, where are luigi’s socks? why is no one asking about it
not since dream team, and they didn't even appear in game anyways.
You're looking for them stripes, huh?
I don’t think the white smear is Mario’s eyes when he kicks the shell, it’s the white patch on his hat
That makes sense.
Somehow I feel like this is going to be like Mario sunshine and Mario rpg, cause peach hasn’t been captured yet.
I wonder what the story will be. I bet it will focus on adventure and exploration since Mario and Luigi are sailing on a ship.
6:11 we can see the block in the background also has a shadow directly below it as it's important for platforming
You're right! Good catch. It's great to see these design considerations for the benefit of the overall player experience.
I'm going to buy this game solely because of that blue backlight in the shadows LOL. It's so pretty it feels like watercolor.
I totally feel you with that. The art direction here is just a chef's kiss.
It’s more 3D than the previous games.
These videos are awesome
Thanks for watching and enjoying. I've got more coming up!
Also you explain things very well and help us non game developers actually understand what you are talking about in an easy way to understand. Thats a talent my guy, and I think you have it!
I'm almost certain there is a bit of a blue rim light shader going on in Mario & Luigi on top of the hand painted gradients?
I could be wrong but it looks that way to me
It's more apparent in the luigi finger snap animation
The aesthetic and vibe is very classic animation, I can't help but see Steamboat Willie
I've learned so much from watching your videos! They're amazing.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. I have more analysis videos coming within the next day or two.
I've been wanting to be a game developer for years, and I finally wrote a book that my game can be based on. Any tips to go about developing my game? Obviously I can't learn every skill and IDK if I can afford to hire everyone I need for now. I was told to make a smaller less ambitious game, like Toby Fox did with Undertale before Deltarune.
If you're curious about the book, it's free to read online but after I finish editing you'll be able to get a physical copy. Future books in the series will only be free for family members though.
Congratulations to you, well done! Completing writing a book is no small task. It is important to start with small projects and use game development tools that have a high degree of "assistance". RPG Maker is what can be considered an "assisted tool" and will do a huge amount of the work for you, so you can learn game development faster. Game Maker is considered a "semi-assisted too", and while you have to do a bit more work, it still helps by doing a lot of work for you. Things like Unity, Unreal, and Godot require you to do significantly more work and require a high amount of knowledge and experience to make a full game. Now is the perfect time to start learning! When you start learning, it is important not to immediate work on your dream project, but rather, small projects where you reverse engineer some games you like and you try to recreate portions of those games. It is the act of learning that is most important when starting Game Development. I will have videos that help with Game Development!
belly jiggle. There is jiggle physics on EVERYTHING and I love it XD
Yes! The belly jiggle is very charming.
i don't know if i'm going crazy, but in the opening cutscene it looks like they re-used the mushroom kingdom's model from mario odyssey
So that's why I see some blue shading on the back of their hats! That was a good detail! ❤
To me this looks like when luigi goes big in dream team
Great video! I always enjoy hearing these kinds of developer breakdowns
I’m curious, how do you think they created the smear frames during the spin? Right before kicking the shell, like at 13:27
i like how Mario and Luigi squash slightly when they land on the ground after jumping.
Yeah! I also like pausing randomly to see the hilarious animation poses.
As a hobbyist Dev, I found your perspective really interesting, subbed! Super hyped for mario and Luigi! Let's-a-go!
G'day fellow dev. Thank you! I hope we get to see more of this game very soon!
As a game artist and modeler who's also been getting into shaders lately, I've watched this trailer like 50 times already lol. I CAN NOT wait to analyze the rips of these models
there is also the answer of "why did they add these black borders?" because it looks AWESOME :3 and its super cool :33
Yes, indeed, it does look super cool, and that's what aesthetics are all about.
This is WAY better than photorealism.
Honestly, I want the final battle to involve Bowser…as an ally. Perhaps a section where you control the Koopa King, as a callback to Bowser’s Inside Story.
I'm totally team Bowser and always enjoy when he pals around with the rest of the crew. I just like seeing him play tennis and drive go karts with them.
That was the first time I've ever heard someone actually pronounce Smash 4 as Sm4sh
It's almost as satisfying to say as "Fant4stic".
7:49 I think it would be great to just use a fade out animation thing for the characters in that case
I agree, but there is actually a significant performance cost to that. I should have mentioned it in the video!
The developers for this probably watched/read a lot of one piece during the pandemic lol
It's not a terrible way at all to pass some time!
Or they played WindWaker
I binged the whole series in 2020 lol
I feel like the Paper Mario TTYD remake also focused a bit too much on lighting effects, instead of prioritizing 60 fps ;(. Would have loved 60 fps.
great analysis
Thank you for watching!
The graphics reflects the artwork for the games which are a bit different than the overal artwork for Mario, and i am talking about handdrawn art not CGI.
The hand drawn art and aesthetic are very beautifully crafted. I'd love to have a chat with the art director and the the artists.
This is a really nice analysis! Also I hope the European version is called "Mario & Luigi: Brothership Bros" lol
This game looks amazing, but the islands are giving me the worry it's going to be structured like Partners in Time. I didn't like Partners in Time at first because of it was so level based, and when I finally came to appreciate it, it was in spite of that flaw.
7:46 would making the enemies run at a lower framerate when far away also reduce how much it costs to keep them rendered? I noticed that in other Nintendo games like kirby and the forgotten land that enemies that are very far only seem to have a very low framerate (maybe 10 frames per second? I didnt count)
yes, it saves cpu resources since updating animation every frame consumes more cpu cycles
Yes, as Tom Watts states, reducing the framerate on the character animations is done as a performance consideration. Normally, bone animations have keyframes which the game engine will smoothly "tween", calculating positions for the character model bones to allow for smooth transitions between keyframes. By disabling tweening, it alleviates some performance pressure, though this really only makes a significant difference if there are many, many animated models in an environment.
@@sungrandstudios @tomwatts9822 oooh nice
The visuals of the Mario and Luigi series have always been stunning, the Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story remakes are entirely 2D games but they still went out of their way to give nearly every area in those games in depth lighting
You are speaking facts.
Maybe in the future characters that are far away will just do a fade out kinda thing that ive seen in games before so it dosent look like they pop out of existence
That's certainly one option some developers employ, though that method does have some performance implications.
why are you calling both azure and fuchsia blue?
great vid
thank you!
@@sungrandstudios yw!
Oh look the red Wario game!
Waaaaaaa!
Ahh hell nah who tried to cook?
what i think its amazing about this graphic, its how it looks old but new at the same time, first time i saw it, i thought it was a gamecube or 3DS game😂,but the more im watching the trailer , i was like" ohh it looks good for an old graphic"😂, it looks like cartoon mixed with our modern 3d games like mario odyssey or DKK
ps: the first time i saw it, i was like " OMG, Kellog's company took it over" 😱😱😅😅
Yea I hope alphadream goes back to 2d the 3d is ok but I like the 2d more from the previous games like paper jam and the others
Could you repeat all that? Sorry, I wasn't listening as I was too focused on the trailer footage :)
I know! The trailer visuals are so beautiful. I couldn't look away.
Maby its just mr but i realy love the outlines
I feel the same. It's not just you. They look great, especially with the varying line width.
Did you forget that the switch is a half handheld console? Lol
Except the Switch Lite is 100% handheld. That makes the Switch overall... a 75% handheld console?
That depends on how you use it. In all the years i've had a Switch, I have NEVER taken it off that dock and it has NEVER NOT been plugged into my TV. So from my point of view, it's 100% a console.
@@thenightstar8312 The point of my comment was because he mentioned that the switch was a home console so the outlines weren’t necessary. Which, of course isn’t exactly true because there is a use case where some people will inevitably be playing the game in handheld mode. Mine is almost always docked as well
They killed vimm. I'm never buying another Nintendo game again
Your loss.
Your very, whiny, entitled, ignorant, poorly reasoned.... loss.
After Mario Wonder, which was also a 3d sidescroller, they decided this should be for now the new aesthetics principles, streatches, smears, keyfaming 3d models, and other details like the eyebrows being on the "top layer" so it harkens back to their older desings... This gives 3d a more likely and cartoony effect, which is what 3d Mario always needed.
You have Mario here looking like indie games in the best possible sense, this also makes games age so much better... If you compare New Super Mario Bros games to Mario Wonder, is just night and day, Wonder will be timeless, while NSMB games looked dated even at the time.
Art direction... Ain't it amazing?
May alphadreams legacy live on thru the next gen of this series 🥹🥹
