Credit to UA-camr Luxin for pointing this out: One of AlphaDream’s larger names, Hiroyuki Kubota, directed the “Mario and Luigi”series and moved to Monolithsoft before AlphaDream’s closure. He has not had any directorial roles recently, and his most recent credit was a “special thanks” for Tears of the Kingdom. This is probably what he was doing, and it means that Monolithsoft probably made this game. For those who don’t know, Monolithsoft helps out with tons of Nintendo’s biggest titles (Zelda, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, etc.) and are mainly known for their own series, Xenoblade Chronicles. This is going to be an excellent RPG.

I’ll argue that Dream Team also focuses on the brothers a lot. I mean, you got Luigi’s loyalty to Mario highlighted right there… He’s so eager to do whatever he can to help.
I agree, that game I feel emphasizes the brothership a lot, With Luigi's repressed thoughts of helping Mario out and being a worthy brother. Being the Giant Bowser fight where Mario and Dreamy Luigi just give the most confident looks and handshake before Luigi grows big (Seriously, in the "real" world every other Giant fight, Luigi is terrified, while before Bowser's fight Luigi just looks so smug). It’s perfect because these kind of games are perfect to hold up the Switch 1 while also getting people excited for the next installment on Switch 2. I predicted they would revive old IPs at the end of the Switch’s life. People don’t have expectations for old IPs and they aren’t trying to keep any momentum going with the system sales so it doesn’t have to break sales records or anything as long as there is interest. This is the perfect time to bring back series like this and F-Zero and Golden Sun and Star Fox.
When this game releases that will be 3 RPGs in the mario universe within a year... Thats just great. Love it.. also love the ttyd streams cant wait to get back into that
Dream team is still one of my favourite mario games ever. Same with bowsers inside story and honestly I enjoyed paper jam for its witty dialogue of classic Mario characters who aren’t really in most RPG Mario games. I just need its writing to be just as good as it usually is and I’m sold
I encourage everyone who hasn’t played all of the M&L games, GO DO THAT! They’re all so good, and I think having that context of what the other games are like is gonna make Brothership even better
Something I dont see people talking about is this game existing (assuming the story doesent end up being much more generic than what the trailer implies) essentially implies that Paper Mario is saved. Traditional battle system, unique story, new and unique characters, all in what is supposed to be a ultra brand safe Mario spinoff.
I’m honestly shocked he didn’t go into this topic deeper. This is the first original Mario rpg title (ie not a remake) since DREAM TEAM that has not been constrained to the 2010s era constraints on characters and settings
And the game LOOKS AMAZING! No more with the plasticky new super Mario bros look! I knew Nintendo would come around eventually with providing more interesting worlds.
@@toadscoper4575realising this was so nuts. The last fully creative (I am not counting Mario and Rabbids) Mario RPG came out in 2013. That was 11 years ago. Jesus Christ it’s been so long. It’s a welcome change tho
@@toadscoper4575well... look at what tanabe said... "Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it’s no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe." This game seems to only have original characters that arent related to mario species at all, so this doesnt seem violate that rule. I think this could have released during the mandate era just fine
It doesn't imply that at all. It could just as easily mean the opposite: Since Mario & Luigi is back to be a traditional turn based action command RPG, Paper Mario is free to continue coming up with weird different combat styles. It doesn't need (and maybe Nintendo will think it shouldn't be) a turn based action command RPG because they already have Mario & Luigi for that.
Now that you mention mario luigi specifically have black iris or corneas only and no coloured eyes. I was so confused how people realised it was mario and luigi series so quickly. I get it now
this games synopsis on nintendos website suggests that beach and bowser will be in the game, but they won't be the main focus/bowser being the main villain, and that makes me content with my existence.
0:02 If anything, based on the polls I’ve been seeing, M&LB was the one that did the overshadowING! Zelda is the 3rd most anticipated, Metroid is the 2nd, and M&L is the 1st.
I don't really trust polls, especially since a lot of people don't vote, but what I do check for is (the exceptionally high) view counts on the official trailers. Currently Zelda is quite far ahead, and last time I checked M&L beat Prime 4.
I think this game is going to be one of my top games on switch just because I love how it looks and is animated. It really looks like a cartoon and I just can't express how much I love that style. It also is surprising how it balances the colors so that it isn't too overly brightly colored while still keeping to the cartoony style. I love the use of squash and squish and the expressiveness in the animation style. I hope this style is here to stay.
One thing I have always wanted on a Mario and Luigi game is the appearance of Wario and Waluigi, either as a bosses or playable characters. I think the humor of Mario & Luigi series would be a good fit for them. There is a very cool concept art for that I saw ages ago and I would really like to see it being made officially. Nevertheless, I am super excited for this new game, M&L is my favorite Mario spin-off series :)
I never had the opportunity to play the Mario and Luigi games because my parents couldnt afford to get me mobile consoles as a kid. So it'll be really cool to actually play one for the first time.
What I love about this version and how I consider them the purest version through how familial bond as brothers and the trust between the two have and how they act like more amicable brothers which I usually don’t see with the mainline games since they tend to leave Luigi out the story but I enjoy stories involving both bros since they are at best together and have more grounded and funny moments. The combat is something i truly miss since these games are super cool and these rpgs are shorter but also so sweet which I will enjoy with replay ability. I’ve missed this series
The big battles in Dream Team is where we likely got to see what these characters would be in 3D for the first time. It’s because I recognised Luigi that I immediately knew this would be a Mario and Luigi game. They always looked similar to how they do at the beginning in the trailer, but it’s specifically Luigi in this series that gives it the charm. Speaking of Dream Team, I just want to say that game is specifically why I’ll defend the idea that Mario and Luigi do not hate each other in anyway. Luigi feels no inferiority to Mario, but still looks up to him as an older brother, being perfectly fine with supporting him.
Has anyone else noticed how the Mushroom Kingdom in the opening of the trailer looks exactly like the Mushroom Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey? Also the end of that shell attack is a Mario Strikers reference I think
I get what you’re saying about the first game, and you’re far from the only one who counts it as their favorite, but I also gotta say: Bowser’s Inside Story is incredible. It’s my personal fave, mainly for the sheer amount of gameplay variety and cool mechanics, better exploration in an almost Metroidvania-esque world, and increased challenge (SS is a bit too far on the easy side). Superstar Saga is definitely a close 2nd though. If it’s one of the ones you mentioned you haven’t played yet, I highly recommend checking it out!
I was watching this direct with a friend and we had missed the first five minutes, and decided after it was over to come back to see what was there, not expecting anything crazy. This was essentially my final reveal of the direct and I loved that feeling so much that I might do it again in the future intentionally.
I just want to point out that travel between islands seems to be accomplished by being fired out of a cannon, AKA the preferred method of transportation in _Trials of Mana._
Partners in Time was my favourite MaL as a kid cus of how spooky and dark the sci-fi story was! This games looks awesome but I hope it has even a lottlle bit of that kooky spoopy edginess
It’s a miracle that we have seen all of the Mario RPG sub-series being revived within the same year. My only concern for Mario & Luigi is that it’s a “swansong title”, something which has doomed the series previously (with Paper Jam and Bowser’s Inside Story remake) and ultimately caused AlphaDream to go bankrupt. I’m hoping that fans don’t sleep on Brothership as it’s a new installment for one and its animation budget is insanely good! Such a pretty game for an older console. My other concern is that Paper Mario reverts back to being zany and experimental instead of embracing traditional aspects like the badge system and leveling up. I initially thought that now that Mario & Luigi may never see the light of day, Paper Mario can go back to what it was due to the release of TTYD remake. But I feel that Nintendo will want to differentiate between the two sub-series as much as they can.
Dude i was in Europe when this direct happened, i said "new Mario and Luigi game?!" I'm really glad it looks this good, they could have gone for the generic Mario look like 3D World, Mario Party, the sport spinoffs, etc but they managed to give this one its own unique look, it's fluid, colorful and expressive I love it.
I love the cel shading it looks like a cartoon and that is just perfect you can already tell this will be artistically timeless.
Butternut Squash? Yes Please!
Imagine if they made this co-op!
My Mario and Luigi rpg wishes would be complete.
That would be how they make it different from Paper Mario.
When this game releases that will be 3 RPGs in the mario universe within a year... Thats just great. Love it.. also love the ttyd streams cant wait to get back into that
Can we call the spinning move on the field the "Bro-nado"?
I've always wanted more games in this comic book outline art style.
We're in an RPG Mario Rennaissance!
We've got 2 Mario + Rabbids games, 2 Good Paper Mario games, a remake of Super Mario RPG and a new Mario & Luigi game.
Dream team is still one of my favourite mario games ever. Same with bowsers inside story and honestly I enjoyed paper jam for its witty dialogue of classic Mario characters who aren’t really in most RPG Mario games.
I just need its writing to be just as good as it usually is and I’m sold
I just think it’s huge that this is the first original Mario RPG in 9 years. And the first good one since… idk, Dream Team?
11 years since Dream Team. It came out on my 16th birthday.
I encourage everyone who hasn’t played all of the M&L games, GO DO THAT! They’re all so good, and I think having that context of what the other games are like is gonna make Brothership even better
Multiplayer in this game would be the sickest thing ever.
Hasn't happened since superstar Saga on the Gameboy player
@@phictionofgrandeur2387 how about a separate mode, like online battles or something?
"Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it’s no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe."
This game seems to only have original characters that arent related to mario species at all, so this doesnt seem violate that rule.
I did like that I was able to identify that it was a Mario and Luigi game from the beginning purely because of the art style
Now that you mention mario luigi specifically have black iris or corneas only and no coloured eyes. I was so confused how people realised it was mario and luigi series so quickly. I get it now
This is the EXACT TopicArlo video we NEEDED
I really love how they were able to perfectly translate the cartoony, squash-and-stretch animation style into 3d, it looks amazing.
Black outlines aren't cell shading.
Love the approach to the artstyle!
this games synopsis on nintendos website suggests that beach and bowser will be in the game, but they won't be the main focus/bowser being the main villain, and that makes me content with my existence.
Princess Beach
@@rxntei4019 so true
0:02 If anything, based on the polls I’ve been seeing, M&LB was the one that did the overshadowING! Zelda is the 3rd most anticipated, Metroid is the 2nd, and M&L is the 1st.
Where are the polls from, there is no way this is true
I don't really trust polls, especially since a lot of people don't vote, but what I do check for is (the exceptionally high) view counts on the official trailers.
Currently Zelda is quite far ahead, and last time I checked M&L beat Prime 4.
@@johnvankiwi8375 From like 3 different UA-cam polls I’ve seen
Bowser fusing with the bad guy at the end of the game is actually a running trope that I love in these games. I want it to happen in this game too.
Imagine if Luigi was actually on Deviant art on his computer in the bush
I love how the art style they just took the box art and made it playable it looks like, I alwayssss loved how Mario and Luigi look in the box art
Mario and Luigi partners in Time was my personal favorite on the series. I loved playing as all 4 characters at once and the story was great.
even the art style is PERFECT for the mario & luigi series
“They’re on some kind of ship” might it be… the BROTHERship?
"complete my blinking animation" is my new favourite phrase
I like how at the end Arlo implies that he will not blink once during his playthrough of the game
im so happy to see a new mario and luigi game with all the things i could possibly want. I can already tell im gonna love this game
Brothership looks fan-fing-tatic. So excited for it. The art style is perfect for transitioning to a modern style
You're forgetting the main thing this game needs. The one thing they took from us.
WHERE ARE LUIGI'S FUNKY SOCKS
Love you Arlo, so excited for the return of this saga 🥰
I get what you’re saying about the first game, and you’re far from the only one who counts it as their favorite, but I also gotta say:
Bowser’s Inside Story is incredible.
Bowser being the final boss is a tradition for this series. I’m all for him not being the final boss, but I also wouldn’t be upset if he is.
I LOVE the animation. I was so excited they started with this, its refreshing to see the boys being allowed to fully emote.
5:37 it’s Luigi’s long neck that’s how could tell right away it was a Mario & Luigi game
That design is so good
Luigi’s always has a long neck tho
Almost perfect…They haven’t announced yoko shimomura as the composer
Theres just one thing missing to be perfect: local co-op! This game is made for it.
I just want to point out that travel between islands seems to be accomplished by being fired out of a cannon, AKA the preferred method of transportation in _Trials of Mana._
I love that they look exactly like they do in the cover art now.
This is also the first NEW traditional Mario RPG in what feels like an eternity. This is such a monumental ocassion
Dude i was in Europe when this direct happened, i said "new Mario and Luigi game?!" As a joke prediction right before the direct, the second i saw the Luigi I SCREAMED, I CRIED IN JOY, my friend was with me and he just smiled at me knowing my true joy i felt, i grew up with mario and Luigi, and I'm happy to see their grand return!
The fact that every single Mario rpg rose from its grave in one year.
I'm really glad it looks this good, they could have gone for the generic Mario look like 3D World, Mario Party, the sport spinoffs, etc but they managed to give this one its own unique look, it's fluid, colorful and expressive I love it. The high quality pixel art of the old ones was a tough act to follow but they did it
