Me scrolling through UA-cam: Video: "Dirt planted goldfish tank" Me: exCUSE ME WHAT I've kept some of my own goldfish in a tank before but always hated how they ripped up my favourite plants. I now exclusively keep my goldfish outdoors in several places with plants such as water lilies, mainly plants with big rhizomes. Similarly to you remaining on mostly plants, my water lily pot has managed to maintain itself wonderfully for a year with zero filtration, monthly root tabs and monthly 50% water changes! The fish have even bred! But I digress. I love how your tank looks in the end, it's unbelievable how you managed to stop them from eating the remaining plants. The fish look so beautiful and healthy, too! Goldfish are just so underappreciated. The fact they grew that much and you only added three proves you knew what you were doing. So glad I clicked on this video, what a marvel!
you could try the potted method. plant your plants in heavy pots with soil/other substrate of your choice. then cover with gravel or better yet stones that the goldfish cant overturn.
Awwwwe you goldfish are so cute i love goldfish one of my favourite fish to keep they’re just so dang adorable lol especiallywhen you have live plants in the aquarium and watch them interact with them so cute lol
Thanks for the great video. I’m setting-up a planted tank right now for my goldfish to live in in the winter (they have a tiny pond for summer) and you answered my question about which plants to try. It’s snowing so I brought in water hyacinth and frog bit and will bring in the fish just before winter really sets in.
I can appreciate having a low maintenance tank... after all of the work in Salt. Large plants with a good size root system can be secured in Pots with dirt, gravel and some heavy rocks. Obviously, you want pots that blend into the scene. Lower profile pots can be hidden by wood, etc. Some people make Bare tanks with Val or swords in Colorful Bonsai pots. I like what do did here! Cheers!
Absolutely love what you have done here.. I have tried Alsorts of plants with my common goldfish ( including amazon swords) but they eat everything! They are really big fish now so I am moving them into my pond in the spring.. I have four weather loach with them in the tank at the moment, the largest is around 30cm and seems to bother the goldfish trying to get the slim coat.. I will leave the weather loach in the tank when the others are moved and plant it up again, hopefully the plants will stay put with just them in the tank! 🌿
I love this video. The right number of goldfish for the size tank, happy and healthy too. I'm getting so much inspiration from UA-cam for my next tank, I'm not sure I have room!
HEY Andrew! Love this video!! I too have kept common goldfish in dirt planted tank. Strangely my fish didnt touch cryptos, maybe because I let them establish first... the fish do stir up the sand and dirt sometimes but I guess thats the deal with keeping goldies~ i don't mind since the water clears up again and I think it made the fish healthier
You can get dirt back under the gravel by freezing it into ice cubes and carefully pushing it back under the substrate. Once it melts, it should stay under again!
This is great but about the lack of water changes, goldfish secrete something that if built up in big enough quantities, stunts their growth. This is why goldfish ‘grow to the size of their tanks’, but as we know that’s not good. So with a bigger tank you still need to change the water every now and then to make sure that stays down
Hi you could use a net to cover the hole in the top and cut it to size, that way you can stop the fish from jumping and also remove it if you want to whilst your around it also keeps the top open
I love you natural goldfish aquarium! I am looking at building a 55g natural fancy goldfish tank with 3-4 fish fancies and school a of white cloud mountain minnows, snails and a weather loach. I've been trying to find a video like yours and there doesn't appear many people keeping goldfish this way. Maybe in a pond outside which I've done before :). comets
I would pull out the floaters every week, slap some power heads, and let the current whip up the detritus to get sucked up into your filter. Add some polyfil into your filters and let the current do the work.
I like the way your plants looked in the beginning. To much for me now. Are these fancy godfish. I want an oranga and have read so much about plants and mostly bare bottom. I really love the fish I saw yesterday at petco, but really want some java fern and anubias, and maybe a fake driftwood but still leave plenty of swimming space, do you think thats okay with a fancy long finned oranga?
I keep 4 still small kois in a 40 gallon tank (it sounds like animal cruelty but since they move around happily it works) which has more plants than water... not really but it feels that way ... two small filters and a an air pump had to be installed ... I seriously have to check out goldfish now just to see if they are "cleaner" than koi fish.... in two years my kois will have to be relocated anyways due to their ever increasing size obviously .... I won't keep kois in a tank let alone a small one and again let alone in a low tech tank in the future... it is a race against deteriorating water quality and leads to weekly 50% water changes.... and they eat all the offspring of my snales ... well they eat everything that fits in their mouths. I love this tank for its jungle look and low tech and the goldfish are awesome ... well done....
A very nice presentation . Just one suggestion . Put a lid or cover on you aquarium made of stainless steel mesh or chicken mesh to prevent fish from jumping out while all the light still going in . Also add some more fish like blue gourami or banded gourami to your setup if it is possible for you .
The plants that survived with the goldfish after a full year were Amazon swords planted in the dirt, java fern and anubias attached to the driftwood, and frogbit, water lettuce and water wisteria floating on the surface.
Goldfish only ever jump out of their tank if the water quality is to poor,Or the living conditions for the fish are not good enough in this case i would say he has far to much plant growth in the tank which is actually restricting the goldfish's swimming space.also these fish are being overfed they would live quite happily on the plants alone inside this tank,Goldfish are natural herbivours.
It's called the common gold fish similar to wild Bettas which have shorter tail yet colorful .. initially prussian carps were bred to artificially produce goldfish and it's initial body shape looked similar to koi.with two tail..but u cud clearly distinguish them as they don't have the mustache (barbels) to be prominent like u cud see in koi and other carp types
Thanks for the comment. Goldfish are definitely not a good choice for most plants for sure. You're basically limited to amazon swords, tied down anubias and java ferns and floating plants. But we love all those so it works for us.
Get rid of most of those plants, you're overfeeding your fish because they eat plants, they're natural herbivores. Your fish will probably stop jumping out if you get decent conditions for them.
A lot of fish keepers look down upon keeping goldfish, but I think they are some of the coolest fish to keep when kept in the proper conditions.
a lot of fish keepers rather see them get fin nipped to death as feeders.
Pun intended
After days/weeks of researching this video was excatly what I needed to see. Thank you.
Glad you liked it. Dirt planted tanks are great fun.
This is probably the best goldfish video I've seen. Extremely helpful, without any useless rambling. 😃👍🐟🌱🌿
Better than Luke's goldies
Thanks for that. I just made an update video with more to come.

I did that for my livebearers tank, and got so explosive vegetation haha.
Great Video! Thanks for posting 4 years of work. Appreciate the insights
Pretty cool. your video👍🌟 Happy weekend Dear friend
The brindle pitbull was lovely
Great looking tank. I keep three large goldies in a 55. I love the planted look. I will have to add to mine.

I will definitely consider that if redo the now nine year old dirt.
This was the most informative video on this topic:))
I am just starting to attempt at creating a planted goldfish tank, let’s see how it goes

Thanks for watching. yeah i think overtime most people keep goldfish all by themselves.
You could put a net on the top so they dont jump out
My last planted fresh water tank had fluorite for substrate and the plants grew like crazy!
goldfish would be my last choice for a dirted tank and yet it worked which proves how great the method is
Great video! I love the look with all the plants. Usually you see goldfish in boring empty tanks but this is so pretty.
I love this video. The right number of goldfish for the size tank, happy and healthy too. I'm getting so much inspiration from UA-cam for my next tank, I'm not sure I have room!

Nice to hear. It does seem that individual goldfish will eat different plants, but establishing them first does seem to be the key thing.
Love it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the informative video
You can get dirt back under the gravel by freezing it into ice cubes and carefully pushing it back under the substrate. Once it melts, it should stay under again!
Also lots of really cool varieties of all natural root tabs coming out these days that essentially revitalize your soil.
Beautiful!

I would personally pick different fish but I can't deny that I'm impressed and it looks good.

This is an interesting story - going from salt water for 20 years to Goldish... usually you see the other way around freshwater to salt water
True. I miss the trigger fish, but don’t miss the saltwater changes.

What type of gold fish are these?
@@larryhenry719 They are called sarasa goldfish, which is basically just a color difference from the common goldfish.
A thin net can help with the jumping out of the tank problem =)
R we put goldfish in planted tank 😊
Why didn't you add more different kind of fish
@@constantvanlife Hi there. They get so big and are so amazing that I didn’t need anything else with them.
No breeding action from the goldfish?
Dirted planted tank is the way to go.
I agree. But after nine years I wonder if I should “re-dirt” the tank.

concerning water quality: only half of what my fish eat comes from pellets the rest is all life food or veges like cabbage leaves or corn....
Great video. Nowadays you could go into more detail to show the mechanics of what you did. More work but longer videos.

You could use egg crate to stop fish jumping out. Try your fish with earthworms - mine love them.

My oranda goldfishes died because there were too many plants
@@yulzion5816 that makes 0 sense
Probably died because of some disease. Plants don't kill fish.
Cool
Would you say freshwater is generally easier than saltwater? Or does it really depend on what your doing?
Absolutely
cool
You just gave up on your salt water fish. Couldn’t you get a new tank?
Hi Andrew, what’s ur pH level?
Here in Indianapolis we have pretty hard water, I think the pH is 7 something .
Thanks
@@andrewgoldfish how do you get your fish like that show me a video
Good setup. However i feed goldfish lots of fresh , frozen veggies and no flakes.
Sad that you replaced your fish :>
plants name ? put in description plz

It look like a koi
I think you have a hight quality of gold fish in your tank: It's a Koi fish!

Actually its not goldfish its koi
Wrong. They’re definitely goldfish.
Koi have barbels.
theres so many plants . almost too much. they need a bit more room to swim
sounds like golfish was the worst decision for your planted tank. I rather go with angelfish or gouramis.
Thanks for the comment. Goldfish are definitely not a good choice for most plants for sure. You're basically limited to amazon swords, tied down anubias and java ferns and floating plants. But we love all those so it works for us.
That is too many plants. At night they will actually give off co2 and choke out your fish.
Ahahaha. Are you serious?
@@rollothewalker5535 don't you know plants are dangerous at night? Too many that is
