Yea, maybe it's wildly unrealistically idealistic. But it's a wonderful song, and something we should reach for, even if human nature might not let us stay there long.
Idealism is never unrealistic. In times of political turmoil it's often the only hope for progress. Why do you think it's usually the outspoken idealists who are violently silenced? I wasn't born yet when JFK was killed, and I was in diapers when RFK and Dr King were killed. John Lennon died about two months before my 13th birthday and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I got the news he was dead. @@willdwyer6782 it is unrealistic bro. From everything that I've seen about those two, they were Always setting a High bar. Those things were never going to be accomplished but that was the part that was idealistic. Idealism is almost always unrealistic but that is because they put that bar so high trauma that when going for the moon might end up being a blender and come up short, it affects a few people. So I understand where you're coming from and I understand where other person's come from time immemorial. This is because realistically the majority of humans would like to see a Utopia or perfect world. The problem is having intentions but then not enough people follow through and it's a repeated episode throughout time. There was Jesus and people before him all the way up to Mohandas K Gandhi that were dreamers and made a difference but not a huge difference because look how these people died. There's never going to be a Utopia on Earth. That's not being pessimistic but rather just being a realist. Human nature will always push some people towards taking advantage of the ones that are striving for a utopian society. Is in our very DNA should do this. I wasn't around back when John and Yoko were doing their thing but I've looked at old videos on UA-cam where John and Yoko Ono we're doing some odd things in hopes of creating a mass peace movement. The 60s was not a mass peace movement. From everything I've ever read about the 1960s, the majority of people were not like these "flower children happy. " like John and Yoko just hanging out in bed with hopes it was going to create a massive peace movement in the world. The song Imagine is a perfect example of John Lennon wanting to see something change throughout Humanity, but realizing it wasn't going to change to the masses but only a select few here and there. I don't think the flower children from the 60s accomplished much of anything just like I don't think antifer accomplishes anything. Both of our children were so happy because they were probably tripping on acid and smoking weed as they where you're just hanging and chilling

I came in contact with Yoko through a scholarship fundraiser in Ann Arbor, Michigan 11 years ago. We organized a concert with a lineup of local musicians covering Beatles and Lennon solos on John's birthday. She heard about it and donated $10,000. Tomorrow will be the 50th anniversary of the John Sinclair Freedom Rally, a benefit concert held at Crisler Arena, University of Michigan's basketball venue, featuring Stevie Wonder, Bob Seger, John and Yoko, and others, to raise money for John Sinclair's legal defense. Sinclair is a local anti-war activist and poet from Ann Arbor who was busted in an undercover sting operation for giving away a couple of joints to an undercover officer and sent to prison for 10 years. Three days after the rally, the Supreme Court of Michigan decided that 10 years for such a minor crime was unconstitutional and commuted his sentence.

@@shellyjones9833 I've been a friend of John Sinclair's for more than 20 years. We see each other every year at Hash Bash in Ann Arbor. In another case unrelated to his pot bust, he was charged by the federal government with conspiracy for allegedly plotting to plant explosives in a CIA office in Ann Arbor. The US Supreme Court threw that case out because the FBI didn't get a warrant for the wiretap. That case turned out to be just another nail in the coffin of the Nixon Administration. Next April John Sinclair will be doing a live internet stream from the building he was accused of plotting to blow up, which is now a marijuana dispensary.
Excellent suggestion. The Beatles also mailed out Christmas records on flexi disc directly to fan club members between 1963 and 1969, but I've only been able to find the outtakes that were included in the Anthology box set on UA-cam.
@@Gulfmist_63 not so much a great singer, but possibly better than Yoko... Linda was a beautiful person, but one time Mark and Brian (from KLOS, the LA radio station) got ahold of her isolated microphone at a live concert and made fun of her voice (she probably sounded bad because it was live and her voice was mostly drowned out by the band) The problem for Mark and Brian was that Paul, who was scheduled to be a guest on their show found about their little 'joke' and backed out of the interview - and I don't blame Paul for one minute. Long live the Fab Four!
41 years to the day (Dec 8 1980) when Lennon was tragically shot dead in New York. I think every Boomer in the world remembers, like me, where they were when they heard the news. I was camping on my own in the Australian bush and listening to the radio. I spent the day close to tears, comforted by the natural beauty and sounds of nature around me as I reflected on his life, music and message. This song was on high rotation that Christmas, and always gets me emotional even now when I hear it.
This Gen Xer was 14 years old when I heard the news, my daddy was watching the football game and I was getting ready for bed when my mama came in my room and told me that Lennon was shot. I grew up with Beatles music like mothers milk, and I remember telling my mama, "Well mama, I think this is my Kennedy moment. " Any Boomer knows exactly what I'm talking about, cause none of ya'll will forget what you were doing when you heard Kennedy was assassinated. Mama sure remembered.
It's actually an anti-christmas song in the style of christmasy music - including Prokofiev's Troika. Listen to the lyrics and notice the use of the past tense. Beautiful, i for one cannot think about John Lennon, without Yoko Ono, we have Yoko to thank for what John achieved after the Beatles, peace. Love and thank you for great reactions both.
This is one of my favourite Christmas songs . Hearing John's voice here, reminds me of how much his son Julian Lennon sounds like his dad on Too Late For Goodbyes.
Thank you so much for doing this iconic song. We play it every Christmas. His wife Yoko is singing with a choir too. Rest in peace to John Winston Lennon
Having grown up with the Beatles and John Lennon, I always thought of this song as the best and perfect Christmas song. Thank you for doing a reaction to it and for bringing a smile to my face.
There are so many traditional Christmas songs that are so beautiful and worthy, but this is the song that makes me feel like Christmas has arrived. It always takes me back to Christmas is the northwoods. Such a warm feeling.
Kudos to you guys! This is the first time I have heard this tune this season. Usually it is on Radio Woodstock WDST-FM, 15 miles away. Thank you. Yes that's Yoko! One day after the anniversary of John's death. He is smiling down on us now. Peace. Oh! The glasses! Oh!
It has been said that when John was a young boy in school the teacher asked the kids what they wanted to be when they grew up. John said happy. When the teacher told him he didn't understand the assignment, he replied that she didn't understand life. ☺
Beautiful choice, beautiful song from John and Yoko. Yesterday was John Lennon’s 41st anniversary. Lovely legacy he left through his music and charities. Two beautiful human beings. Thank you for reacting to this amazing song. I wish their dream for the world would eventually happen 🥰
John was killed on 8 December 1980..yesterday was 41 years ago. Rick Beato did a lovely reminisce. Hope to hear more Beatles stuff like the Hard days night album songs
used to have John Lennon on a bit of a pedestal until I saw the Larry King interview of Julian. While Julian was classy I really think charity starts at home and his neglect and estrangement of his first son left a very bad taste in my mouth.
@@josepha5885 I was in several bands in LA in the 80's, some great, one was a disaster. For some reason, I got involved in a rapidly thrown together band that only had two rehearsals before playing at the Club Lingerie. I was so mad, knowing the show would be awful, I got there early, and had two beers, something I had never done before a show. Anyhow, we go on, and I'm standing behind my keyboards, looking out into the audience, and all I could see was Julian Lennon, at a table across the bar. I wanted to disappear. I know it's going to be the worst show I've ever been a part of, and when I look up, all I see is Julian. That was long and painful. After the show, our singer had a long talk with Julian in the bar, I just kind of stood around. Julian seemed to enjoy our show, but I'm sure he was just being nice. If only we had had a month to prepare.
My favorite story from John is when he met Yoko. He came to her art gallery show, and one exhibit was a tall ladder reaching up to the ceiling, with the obvious expectation to climb it, and to read what was written on a small note attached to the ceiling. John expected to see something cynical, and was ready to goof on it, until he read that it simply said "Yes." That captured him.
one artist 'getting' another. Love that story and the whole concept of what the tall ladder and how we finally get to a point in our lives when we say YES to living. She is such an excellent concept artist. To this day.
Many songs remind me of what it was like to grow up as a kid in England, but nothing encapsulates the magic of British Christmas during school than this. This is a painfully beautiful reminder of how those memories are fading further into the past as I age, and how distant I’m becoming with everyone I grew up with. I sincerely hope we all meet in these memories from time to time. I miss being young
RSR, for Christmas songs: Jose Feliciano "Feliz Navidad" Bruce Springsteen "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" The Waitresses "Christmas Wrapping"- its like a mini Hallmark movie in a song!!
When I hear John's voice, especially around the anniversary, it just breaks my heart. Recommend "River" by Joni Mitchell for a Christmas song. Not too cheery, but a work of art.
More ...John Lennon - Woman - Just like starting over - Watching the Wheels Also ....Paul McCartney - Band on the Run - Uncle Albert - Live and let die - Jet George Harrison - What is Life - Give me Love - All those years ago - Got my mind set on you Ringo Starr - Photograph - You're Sixteen - It don't come easy All Fantastic songs from the individual Beatles after they broke up!
Got My Mind Set On You is a cover of a 1962 song recorded by James Ray, who died of an overdose less than a year after he recorded it at the age of 22. George heard it for the first time shopping in a record store while he was in the Chicago area visiting his oldest sister about 5 months before the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan. The Beatles started covering other tunes by James Ray in concert after Paul got turned on to his music in one of Brian Epstein's record stores. ua-cam.com/video/A1E6xvM7PeA/v-deo.html
When John Lennon was shot, I was sitting as a soldier (conscript) at 07:00 a.m. in an office at an air force technical school in Faßberg. A very difficult time. I was totally shocked and had to cry. And my superior officer (a sergeant major) was also close to tears. It was winter, gray, dark, wet and cold. And nothing is as bleak as an old barracks in winter. I still miss him. 💖☯☮
Actually Yoko was not a bad singer. She was into "avant garde" art and did some "weird" stuff (for example-"Don't Worry Kyoko.Mummy's Only Looking For A Hand In The Snow." But the flip side of "Happy Christmas",I believe, was a song called "Listen. The Snow is Falling." Her voice is very pleasant and the song is beautiful.
I was 15 years old when John Lennon got shot. It was a few weeks before Christmas and this song got played a lot. Something you may or may not realize you do this bridge the gap between cultures and generations. We all grow up in our cultural bubbles of the type of music we listen to sometimes never hearing outside of that bubble. In this immediate gratification no attention span world we live in where people may hear a snippet of a song and dismiss it. You are sitting down and taking the time for yourselves and the people out here in UA-cam land to actually listen to the song to find its beauty Instead of dismissing something quickly you may have heard in the background on the radio. There are many songs I’ve had to listen to many times for it to grow on but then I love it. On a separate note for us old heads, or at least me, it always seems surprising when people don’t know who certain people are in a video. The people in this video are all huge musicians. George Harrison from the Beatles who started this group, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne from ELO, and the fifth Wilbury who was not in this video because he passed away shortly before Roy Orbison. What was put in this video was a very poignant shot of the chair rocking with Roy Orbison’s guitar in it. I would love to meet you guys and sit down and just talk and play music for a couple days. Keep doing what you are doing! Peace!
What does that mean: "war is over if you want it?" I was a little too young to "get" this song when I first heard it. I thoughts wars "just happened." There are times of peace, and there are wartimes. That's history class for you. But the song's meaning is very clear: war doesn't "just happen, human beings make it happen." The message here is that we all have it within ourselves to choose peace. And what better time to remind us of this than at Christmas? But the song also poses a challenge: Do you want the war to be over? Well, what are you doing about it, as we enter a new year? If you want it, you have the power to make change happen. Thank you for acknowledging the anniversary of John's tragic death. You two are hippies at heart, and I love it.
The old sixties rant” what if they gave a war and no one came.” John and Yoko took to mean there is always choice. And in the sixties and seventies there was no Hitler. The North Vietnamese were not trying to invade Hong Kong or Guam.
This came out Christmas 1971. I was just drafted and had a lot on my mind There is another video showing John Yoko with th Harlem boys choir singing the words and it was a special production. John and Yoko were so patient and the the kids are so happy, I can't help but think about how this moment was for them.
I was born in 1966 and as a child I thought every song on the radio was the Beatles...☺ I was 14 when he was murdered and my oldest sister was 24. She was making and early batch of Christmas cookies and we were listening to our Christmas records... Then it went from joy to complete sadness when my friend came over and told us the news. We sat in front of the television and cried all night. This song is just one of the many treasures the genius of John Lennon left us
Wow. That's awesome that Yoko gave you a shout out! It seems that she's really cool in her older age as well. She's active in all sorts of things, mostly to benefit others.
One of my all time favourite Christmas songs is Greg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas. I also love Chris De Burgh - A Spaceman Came Travelling and Johnny Mathis - When a Child Is Born. It would be great if you could listen to any of these 🥰
Good choice. Such a beautiful song. So full of meaning, especially at this time of year. No other song is quite like it.......except "GRANDMA GOT RUN OVER BY A REINDEER"
Burl Ives did a lot of Christmas songs. (Holly Jolly Christmas), (Rudolph the red nosed Reindeer), (Frosty the snowman). He is not a crooner. He's more of folk music.
Thank you for saying Yoko Ono is a beautiful person. She has had a bad rap for so long. So underserved. She and John, as you said, stood for peace and unity.
A catchy little tune for sure, but have you actually paid attention to the lyrics. Both the Globalizers and Marxist use the song as an Anthum. The answer no, I can't imagine: No Heaven, No Hell, No Countries, No Religion and No Possessions. I've always been a Beatles and Lennon fan, but this is would make Carl Marx just plain giddy.
One of my favorites. There are 3 songs that I must hear every Christmas season and this is one of them. The other 2? Santa an' His Ol Lady by Cheech N Chong and Twelves Days of Christmas by Bob And Doug McKenzie.
Bob and Doug MacKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) are classic Canadian comedy, and that is is my fav version of that song! The Muppets are a close second. Lol!
I read the full article of the very last interview John Lennon did with a reporter from Rolling Stone just 3 days before he died. John was doing the interview to promote the album John and Yoko had recorded together, the first new music John had made in 5 years. They had waited 10 years for Sean's birth, so when they finally had a successful birth, they both wanted to concentrate on being a family and being there for Sean. I'm glad they had those years to be parents together before John's tragic murder!
He was taken 41 yrs ago just yesterday. This song makes me cry. RIP John. You're never forgotten. I play your music to my grandchildren, they love you too. Thank You and Merry Christmas to RSR!! ❤️😘
I've always felt this song represented the true spirit of the Christmas season (no matter what the religion or what they call the season, the meaning is the same of love all). You might want to listen to "The Ballad of John and Yoko"...
That was indeed Yoko Ono singing with John, and The Harlem Boys Choir sang the background “War Is over, if you want it”! They were referring to the Vietnam War which was still being fought when this song was released, I believe for Christmas 1971. Keep up the great work. I’m shook when I watch your videos!
This is one of my favorite Christmas songs. It’s not exactly a joyful song, but there’s lot of hope and optimism in this song for a brighter future. John Lennon is such a genius, to create an anti-war Christmas song, and still sound Christmassy and warm.
John Lennon wasn't the first to contrast Christmas cheer with the darkness of war in song. Check out Bing Crosby's 1943 WWII era holiday classic I'll Be Home For Christmas.
Got the record when it first came out. Now 64 years old and for me it is still the most beautiful and emotional Christmas song. Deliberately just searched for it to listen once again at home so I don't get weepy when it suddenly gets played in the supermarket.
We were so optimistic coming out of the 60's. We really thought the world was changed, and of course it has changed, but in too many ways, not enough. This is a wonderful song. A shout-out from Yoko? Wow. This is still possible...humans are moving forward. Happy Christmas :)

I'm gonna throw a vote in the hat for "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses. It's CLASSIC 1980's Christmas music! Love it! ALSO - "Christmas in Hollis" by Run D.M.C. - Looooooove them both!
One of the few to write his own Christmas song instead of just covering an established Christmas song… If you’ve never heard the Beatles song In My Life.. you should listen to it.
It ain’t fair, John Sinclair.

Now that you've heard John and Yoko's Christmas song, you may as well hear Paul Mccartney's, Wonderful Christmastime.
YES!! And there is a GREAT VIDEO to Paul's WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS TIME, too!!
Excellent suggestion. The Beatles also mailed out Christmas records on flexi disc directly to fan club members between 1963 and 1969, but I've only been able to find the outtakes that were included in the Anthology box set on UA-cam.
At least Linda McCartney could carry a tune.
And Paul's "Pipes of Peace"!
@@Gulfmist_63 not so much a great singer, but possibly better than Yoko...
Linda was a beautiful person, but one time Mark and Brian (from KLOS, the LA radio station) got ahold of her isolated microphone at a live concert and made fun of her voice (she probably sounded bad because it was live and her voice was mostly drowned out by the band)
The problem for Mark and Brian was that Paul, who was scheduled to be a guest on their show found about their little 'joke' and backed out of the interview - and I don't blame Paul for one minute.
I was at my college radio station. I heard four bells on the news wire machine, used for BIG stories. Crushing news when I read of John's murder.
Monday Night Football. Only my father's and my childhood best friend's deaths have affected me more.
Apparently we aren't ready for peace, cause most who preach it dont last
I've heard Yokos voice described in many ways over the years. But 'beautiful,' that's definitely a new one to me.

Another touching Christmas song that is so overlooked is “I Believe in Father Christmas “ by Greg Lake.
One that is not so touching is “Father Christmas” by The Kinks. 😂
It's actually an anti-christmas song in the style of christmasy music - including Prokofiev's Troika. Listen to the lyrics and notice the use of the past tense.

They sold me a silent night
And they told me a fairy story
'Till I believed in the Israelite

Beautiful, i for one cannot think about John Lennon, without Yoko Ono, we have Yoko to thank for what John achieved after the Beatles, peace. Love and thank you for great reactions both.
I've always loved this song for a significant part of my 73 years on the planet.
Magnificent song. John had the ability to write anthemic songs that will last forever. Proof of just how good Lennon was.

You should react to John's son, Julian Lennon Too late for goodbyes. Always been a favourite of mine.
used to have John Lennon on a bit of a pedestal until I saw the Larry King interview of Julian. While Julian was classy I really think charity starts at home and his neglect and estrangement of his first son left a very bad taste in my mouth.
I saw Julian in concert back in the 80's.
My late mother loved this song and played it every Christmas. I cry happy tears every time I hear it.
We need more John Lennons in this world. Please Heavenly Father hear my Prayer. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ⛄🎄🦌🎅🤶🥂🎊🎉🎆
John Lennon's song "Mother" is one of the most emotional songs ever.
Idea : Listen to the 3 'Mother' songs, in chronologic order : the Lennon, Waters, and Kate Bush.
It really tells something.
John Lennon's music is still relevant now.
Humm... this is absolutely NOT Lennon's music... just the Text. : )

Very well said.
There would be no B-52s or Galaxie 500 without Yoko.

Since the day he died, I still cry at all his beautiful words of wisdom and peace in music. Always loved and missed...RIP John Lennon.
