You know how some days you just have a bad day. Well, I'm having a bad video. As well as the spelling on the spine, and the image on the back cover not being centred, there seems to be a technical issue as well. It seems to be a processing issue after the video was uploaded. I'm going to leave it up for now and see what happens. If it does not resolve itself I'll take the video down and reload it later in the week with a correctly spelled spine.
I love that this video shares mistakes! I am teaching a beginning book binding class and I always tell my students I have yet to make a perfect book. Still striving!
I was wondering if that "tail" was intentional. Like maybe I just didn't know about some convention that this title had the word tail on the spine that went back to the original publishing or something. I guess the simplest explanation is usually correct.
Im on my own long journey of self taught bookbinding with a TON of help from channels like this and i can always come back to see where i messed up or did it right. Its good to see that people trained in this also mess up. While ive gotten better, id love to keep growing!
About 70 percent of my bookbinding experience I built up watching your videos. I owe you a lot. I am a great admirer of your expertise, dilligence, experimenting new things, methodology, you name it. Especially your confidence in your work that allows you to share your mistakes with us. I was about to give up bookbinding because the knot I tried to do during sewing always got loose until I watched your video and you stating that that particular knot is a little capricious and difficult to tick on the first try. I dont know why, but i.prefer the boards covered. I would really love to see if it's possible to cover all in one piece. I know I've accomplished this woth journals so i can't see why it wouldnt be! Love your videos. And thank you so much for sharing your wisdom.
I've watched this video about 10 times because I want to attempt this, but I had a question concerning doing it all in one piece. Would it not allow enough give in the spine if you did to the spine piece what you did with the small added pieces of book cloth? As in the spine piece has the center glued down but either side is left loose and cut flush to the card used and the "loose" pieces were glued to the board when the cover is attached?

Although I like both methods of covering the text block, I do prefer the covered boards style. The way you do it in this video is much less fussy than in a previous video! I’m wondering about the permanence of the ink on the fabric. I have always thought that the ink needs to be fixed in some way. I think I would try to spray it with an acrylic fixative for artists like Krylon’s UV protective varnish.
One of the reasons I use Epson InkJet genuine ink is that it is tested for permanence. I don't like using these fixatives etc. Many have been shown to yellow with age and I do like the texture of the uncoated fabric and wouldn't want to change that. But you might have a product you trust and that's fine to use.
Love watching your videos and I am sure, like me many armatures in the book binding field, we learn a lot for your expertise, my wife often listens in while I am watching you work, she did pass comment that during your two Peter Rabbit videos she said she would have preferred your old medieval evil type music as she puts it 🙂
Love this and going to give it a try. Desperate for the one piece version though, as I screen print my covers, and the designs often wrap around the spine, so it would be lovely to see if using sewn board is an option. Always enjoy your videos.

Just finished my first PR binding. As I only have 18/3 linen thread I used 3 stands of embroidery cotton in a matching blue, this worked perfectly as there was minimal swell. There were a few problems - just with the difficulty in printing both the text and the book cloth. The ink on the book cloth burred off as I rubbed it down. For my second copy I'm using artist fixative to see if this helps. Fingers crossed for the second attempt tomorrow.
@@DASBookbinding Nick was a wonderful teacher but I have learned so much from you too. Don't underestimate how much you are giving to the worldwide bookbinding community. BTW you may have missed a comment I made to an earlier video. My laser printer won't print double sided on A5. I have set Shakespeare Sonnets to print to the top of an A4 sheet in 10 pdfs. Either print half one way and turn the paper round and cut, or print 2 copies and cut. Let me know if you would like them and I can send them by WeTransfer.
I also think covered cardboard looks better, but I have a question: wouldn't have it been faster to cover it with the same strip of cloth you used on the spine, instead of making separate pieces?
I think I know what you mean, and yes, this is what I wonder too. I ponder this at the very end of the video. It is a significant deviation from how this binding has been traditionally done. That doesn't mean it can't be done and I've already started making prototypes testing this out. I'm sure others have done it. I just haven't come across it.
Always love your videos. One question: why is the cover just tipped on the part of the breakaway spine? Wouldn't it be more kid-resistant if it was adhered more to the outside of the cover?
But if you fold around and drum it to the inside part of the cover and secure with tipped on paste in there really is not much to grab by to damage it...
It will be plenty strong and the drummed on approach gives it nice soft feel. It comes from the original design from Gary Frost. You could glue it on if you want. But it's a nice change.

I have a question. I have a Lord of the Rings 4 book set illustrated by Alen Lee. (The 3 books plus the Hobbit) I love it but the end papers are terrible, wrinkled, thin, and off set and i was thinking about creating new end papers to glue in. I've been watching bookbinding videos for months but I'm not sure if i should attempt to take it apart to replace the end papers entirely or just glue new ones in on top. My worry is that the original end papers are very thin, and you will be able to see the original picture through the end paper on the back side. Plus I'm not sure if I would be able to line the pages up perfectly on the inside. I know i need to practice with some other books first, but I'm not sure what would work best in this situation.
I personally don't like mucking with bindings. I accept them for what they are. I've never heard of putting a new endpaper in over an existing one. So many problems I can think of. Even if the planets aligned and you got it down straight, I'm sure the inside hinge point will be affected and it won't open well. Recasing it with new ends has problems too. The main text to case attachment is probably re-enforced with a commercial grade crepe or something similar. This would have to be cut to remove from the case. I doubt you could replicate the strength of the original case attachment. Books are like people. None are perfect. But we love them anyway.
I would like to see if the one piece cover turns out well; I'm also wondering if one couldn't just cover that section of the boards with turn-ins on the spine piece, rather than having a patch... Also if there's a processing issue in the video I didn't see it, so it may have worked itself out. (unless this is the re-upload) And I wasn't even going to say anything about the spelling since I thought it was either a) a difference in American & Australian editions, or b) a complete memory glitch on my part (like a "Berenstein"/"Berenstien"/"Berenstain" Mandela thing) about which way it was supposed to be spelled.
If you use the turn-ins of the spine piece then it can't "break away". But if you're doing a tight-back version, then maybe? I have to think about it. I imagine it would be fiddly to get aligned, but probably manageable.
It won't burn the cloth. But it is very hard to do. So hard, that I think it is not worth trying. The cloth is too hard and the tool easily slides around. For a tool of any significant size you can't get enough pressure to make a good impression. And then when you try and press harder, and do the usual thing of rocking the tool, it is likely to slide. I've got a friend that is good at it, but I just don't recommend it.
@@DASBookbindingdo you have any suggestions about where is get a roll of bookcloth like this. I've always covered in paper so I could print the cover. Being able to print right on cloth would be a game changer for me.

I like the Bach far better - or maybe you should try some John Dowland in stead of this rather stressful music - I mean - I use your videos to bring me in zen - and the music and action of your earlier videos have done just that - the new music doesn’t. (It will not keep me from watching, though :-) )

But I would prefer to use the Bach but I keep getting spurious copyright violation notices from companies claiming to own the copyright to the melody of Bach. If I'm in a rush, like I was with this video, I don't take any risks and use music vetted and supplied by Google. But I find this very limiting. Sorry.

There is a lot of music that I once loved that I never want to hear again. I actually prefer watching videos with no music at all. There are a few out there and they receive a lot of positive feedback for it.
@@tuppyglossop222 Because my head is right next to the camera it often picks up the sound of my breathing. Especially when it is sped up it sounds a bit creepy. The music hides this.

Regarding foiling, is it possible to use brass tools on bookcloth as you would on leather, or would they singe the cloth?

You would need to be careful that the material doesn't melt in a laser printer. I saw Tyvek wreck the drum of a photocopier once (not mine)
