My late Uncles Mom had a thriving chicken business on their farm. She had 3 hen houses and raised a bunch of meat birds almost every summer for years. Her meat birds took over one of the farms hog pens every summer for years! But shs never lost a laying hen to a predator for only one reason. Every laying house had a pair of geese that were raised in it that protected her flocks. If you entered the laying house through the people door, you were fine, but heaven help you if you came up that chicken run! My Uncle's farm dog was a short haired female fox terrior. A Holstein bull got loose one summer while I was visiting and she was on his heels! They raised primarily Duroc hogs as breeding stock with some feeder hogs and that dog had zero problems with sows with piglets or large to huge show boars (show boars have to have their cutters still intact.) But when my Great Aunt had her chickens and their guard geese out grazing in the yard in the summer, the dog gave those geese at least 15' of clearance!
Great story.
When Dad built our house back in the 50s, he nailed 1x12 poplar on a 45 on the outside walls all the way around. The wind never moved the house. Much better than plywood on the corners.
Yep 1x on a diagonal was standard sheathing back then. It was much better than plywood for bracing the walls.
Careful Nathan...you are getting some sawdust in your sawdust catch bucket 🤣👍✌😀
Interesting. One of my life philosophies is: "Where possible, always swap money for time, never time for money"!
New building will be nice. Progress is being made.
I initially thought that was you on Mr Kato Nathan. I thought wow, Nathan has really learned so fast on how to use that skid steer. I still think you’re doing very well, much better than I would be doing; that’s for sure.
Poplar, the poor man’s mahogany. A real cool guy told me that, then he showed me one day, stained right it’s hard to see a difference. As a youngster we had a family move in the area from Kentucky and they called Quaker ash poplar,
My Dad had an old circler saw that he sawed lumber with, how he would have loved your setup. Keep up the good work.
I'm so sick of of all the politicians and politics going on right now, so thank you for not adding it to your channell. It's nice to have a respite from it.
AMEN 🙏
Agreed! Unless your youtube channel is politically oriented, I don't think it should discussed. I subscribe to a channel for its intended content and not its political views.
That is one slick machine ,so much more. Out of the log man got to have one!!! 31:44
Mr Kato got a workout on that foundation. It sure handles the slopes nicely.
Yes it does!
Things certainly are on the forward move at your property now Nathan. The equipment is increasing as are the buildings & things are going to move a lot more smoothly for you as you go forward from here. Gosh, they don't seem to take their time in raising a building over your way. Your massive barn went up in a few days & now this new shop is not a small building but they expect to be finished in just 2 days. Good video with useful information & encouragement given. Next thing you will have to put on your 'running shoes' to keep up with the progress. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Ole Mr Kato makes work look like play😊
Keep the bucket full while you are grading. You could really use a compactor. Thanks for all the videos. I won't poop on your equipment skills. I remember way back when I was learning. You are making great progress. Keep practicing and watching the that can. How's Bruno been?
Working Mr. Kato like a pro!!
Where's the Beard ? It's not him !
I was watching that track loader maneuver and was saying to myself Wow! Nathan has really taken the next step in handling that thing! Looks great buddy. That new building will be something else. I did hear you say how many doors will be involved... uh oh.... How was the Bunyon show this year? Sorry I missed it but it was a great visit with my daughter and family for a few days Perfect Weather over here and some apple picking! Sp glad to see the video!
The popple in the Wi north woods has the appearance of big, but it doesn't peel like birch. They grow like weeds here. But don't have much girth
Have you made anty squirrel pie yet?🤣
Thanks for sharing.
You bet
Your sure have a lot going on. Maybe its time to take a day to relax and you and Bruno do some side by side riding and videoing the farm. I enjoy the videos...
That's the plan!
Good to see things coming together down at the new sawmill building location. Yes the adds are hitting us hard lately.
Three weeks and it will be over.
I envy you every time you push dirt or dig in the ground and don't hit any rocks or boulders. Up here in New England I hit rocks every time I put a blade or bucket in the ground!
we hit some, but not often, thanks for watching
Keep up the good work. It’s great to see entrepreneurship and individuals making good. I’ve been a builder in Australia all my life and I used to do that stuff. I recommend anybody to start a business business and to enjoy it.
That's a beauty edger. Thanks for sharing with us all.
Nice edger. You're movin' up in the sawmillin' world.
Nathan, that's really going to look good when you get the building done and the ground leveled up.
Mr Cato will need a bath after this!
I was thinking while watching you run the mill, you may be able to solve the “leaking” sawdust issue with your bucket, by putting a cantaloupe-sized rock on the inside, to cant the bucket slightly inboard. Hopefully you can visualize what I’m saying.
Mister Kato is a nice machine! Nice job!
Great job Nathan, lots of great video too. Your friend does good work with his skills . Enjoyed the great information about the Wood Mizer Edger, that was a great demo too. Stay safe and have fun in the new building when they get it up for you. Fred.
Thanks 👍
Hey Buddy, you are living the good life when your keg hides your six pack. Keep on doing what you are best at. Love ya!
You keeping ole Crawford busy, that’s a good thing!!
Hey Nathan, that bucket you are using to catch sawdust from the sawmill, if you had a lid from that bucket, cut the lid in half, put it on the bucket, and use a torch to heat up the portion that would go by the outfeed from the mill, so that it is bent up and over the outfeed tube, then when it gets to the tire, swings out a bit, the 'flap' or bent up portion, would be over the outfeed tube already and it would not be a factor inhibiting the flow of sawdust, from the mill. I think with this addition, you might be able to capture 90%+ of the dust that is escaping now. I just thought of this while watching the mill sawing. Best of Luck.
You are getting really good at moving dirt
Always a pleasure watching your videos!!
Thanks again!
Maybe you have done this before, but you should do a vid showing how you cut a log. How the blade goes forward, how the depth of the cut is set, etc etc
Had I not seen the last video I would have thought the old sawmill shed got hit by a Tornado!! Brutal.
FYI: What is apparently called shale/slate in your region is known as brown clay in south Illinois, and it's very good for compaction under concrete slabs. It's under most all of the Interstate highways in the Midwest at 90+% compaction, and has held up very well under close to 60 years of heavy truck traffic. Good start!
Nice edger . That guy operating Mr. Cato does know what his doing . Pad looks good . Seeya
agreed
WOW Nathan, that log has what looks like a big checking on the operator end right thru the center of the pith. It'll be interesting to see how you make your cuts.
You're getting pretty good with Mr. Kato Nathan, I'm impressed. Oops I guess that isn't you operating it. Well you have something to shoot for.
Good information. Thanks
Hi Nathan & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Nathan & Friends Randy
A nice small flatbed trailer you can pull with a 4 wheeler that can catch
Lumber off the edger and sawmill table to use to move lumber to the
Dryer to stack up on stickers could save picking stuff up to move it.
Less work on your back.
The small cuts stickers. Mill them all the same size. And make 45 drg
Dados in them on both sides that do not line up to both sides.
Yes i been watching other sewers who have a lot more exp then you.
Its pretty cool pick a subject, you can watch 50 others doing the same thing.
Be kinda neat to find a use for the bark cuts off each log.
Shout out to the operator
I'm not a bit disappointed about you NOT doing all the dirt work, but I have to say I was getting pretty proud of how quick you were learning the track loader. 😊
I’m still learning!
Thanks for sharing brother 🙏😁 enjoyed it.
Good Building with your new project Nathan! Kind Thanks, Many Blessings and Good Music! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
I had every intention of bringing you a bigger sawdust bucket to Paul Bunyan, and it just slipped my mind. Looks like you are making good progress on the new building, cant wait to see it finished! Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for the video Nathan.
Just a thought about your dust, why not put a tarp down to catch most of it. It seems that would be easier to clean up in that gravel.
I've got a giant Tulip Poplar tree in my yard. It gets flowers on it in the spring that look a lot like tulips, hence the name of the tree.
Hey Nathan, do you need to get building permits for all the work you are doing…? Lots of areas require a permit for EVERYTHING.. Love how things are coming together. ❤
That is such a sweet running machine. The saw and the edger. I would do a lot for that on my tiny mill. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time.
nice to see things are moving along for you
In western New York unless you specify differently the loggers take 18” and up. Good luck on the new shop build. Earl would look great next to mashed potatoes 😉🍗
I always enjoy your videos. Thank you
Excellent work. But you know, Mike Morgan is likely to send you a message....😅
Good day to you Nathan, I noticed that a bit of saw dust flys beyond the bucket you're using. If you were to put a piece of aluminum sticking out the top like a face shield it would catch almost all that dust and keep it off your stone. Just a thought.
Pretty sure you can not edge those boards with you circular saw, jig saw, chain saw, hand saw, one of them fancy axes or you Swiss Army knife as fast as that. Well, I certainly would not be able to. You have a great channel and video. What I noticed, the rooster didn't crow at Richard........Just saying. looking good! Great to see the progress. Thank you
Hey Nathan, you need to move that sawdust bucked out a couple inches!
Great video!
Thanks!
Looks good Nathan. Looking forward to the new barn build. Stay safe.
Looking good Nathan..get out that Hoodie
The best place for that rooster - in a gumbo. Yeah - rooster gumbo! 👍😎👍
Nathan...are you worried that the sawdust will break down and become a breeding ground for weeds? I know you said you're bring down your dust collector. Can you blow it out of the rocks with a leaf blower in the meantime? Hate to see you making extra work for yourself. Great Videos! Don't change a thing. I love the 30-40 min format! That little speed up on mundane tasks is a great add in... nicely done. :)
Great video Would love to have that Ford dump truck
You and me both!
Tulip poplar is our state tree. Just don't park under one. If you know, you know.
Please Nathan, it hurts that I have to watch the sawdust go everywhere except in that little bucket you have hanging off the LT70! Please fit the extraction tube - I’m begging you!
What are you doing for drain tiles around the new structure?
Great video Nathan
The Doyle scale is designed to favor the loggers on smaller logs, but on logs over about 24-16" it comes more in line with the International scale.
May want to add a laser guide to the edger. You can squeeze a bit more out of the edge cuts.
Have a good day.
Thanks Nathan, nice video!! About the edger, will you please show how you easy align the boards? Would it be nice to put one laser on top? (or 2, the second adjusting together with the sawblade) Enjoy! Grtzz from the Netherlands, Richard
That Edger sure does make a satisfyin sound.
Boy, that's plenty of dirt you've moved.
What kinds of tasks will you be doing in the new shop? Are you moving any equipment from the new red building to the new shop?
New shop is for working on stuff
Looks like your catch bucket needs adjusted to catch your dust.
Just like my shop, buildings and even my house, the rule is: If there's a flat, horizontal space or surface anywhere one week, the next week it will have something(?) stored there. Oh well, it is what it is. lol
Time to set up the dust collector
You need a bigger bucket!
Likely to late to help - put sand over that water under the cement. It might have to be repaired. One never knows. Popular populates easy - take a green limb split 4" and put a rock in the split and plant over the split. They grow very fast. Nice for fine work.
One way to stop those UA-cam ads is withe their ad free subscription. I get no ads unless the UA-cam creator is hawking something.
Love your vids, did you consider a retaining wall?
Bring the dust collector and one of your batteries so there will be less sawdust on the ground by the saw.
I think an oval or elongated bucket would catch more saw dust.
You are correct about the ads... Google is behind it and to get rid of all ads, They charge me $14 a month. But it is worth my sanity to not consistently be bombarded by so many ads.
Will the Kato provide enough compaction to support the slab?
The ads you get when you're viewing a video are not based on the video creator or controlled by them. It's based on what videos you watch and how the youtube algorithm interprets that and on the preferences you have set as to what type of ads you would rather see more or less of. The creator of the video can control the frequency of the ads as in how many they want to be shown in their video because they get money from ads, so the more ads, the more money they get. The only way to get rid of ads is to pay for premium youtube.
Use seatbelt please on anything not level. If it tips it usually throws the operator under the overhead guard crushing body parts.
I feel like you need a second channel. I love both directions you’ve gone and all your content, but sometimes I sure miss your old videos of just you and the sawmill! (And rides around the property with your son!)
I understand
Thanks Nathan
i would not fill the hole where the water line came up in the old building. I suggest putting a wooden/plastic plug in the hole a few inches down, then you can fill the hole from the plug to the top of the floor. Reason being that there is a water junction at the bottom of the hole and if you have to fix the water line, you would not have to drill to the bottom and remove the concrete without making the problem worse by damaging the water valve. Just a suggestion. Love your videos.
I sure that line is turned off as I believe the only thing it did was provide water to the hydrant that he removed
When are you going to get your dust collection hooked up?
Question.... I could google it but thought i would ask you. What are the fingers hanging down at the rear of the saw for? Look too flexible for anti kickback or something like that. We enjoy your videos. keep up the good work.
Do the concrete now!
Nathan, I fully understand that you don't place the ads on your channel. My issue with Google is your channel has more commercials than any other UA-cam channel I watch. I've been keeping track. I get a 55 second commercial every 6 minutes. Other channels aren't like that. Of course, you can't talk to anyone at Google or UA-cam. My 2 cents....
Thanks for sharing, I understand!
Do you plan on running power and water down to the new mill building?
Yes
