Man I love this band, stumbling into these guys' work was like falling in a tar pit while casually going on a stroll! This album specifically left an enormous mark in me. Gareth Liddiard is an amazing vocalist and lyricist also, I adore his cadence and eloquence, and while not exactly comparable in sound and general vibe, him, Aaron Weiss from mewithoutYou and Alexander Kent from Sprain (saddly disbanded) are my personal favorite vocalists and poets I've come across, looking forward to the review! (Speaking of them, it would be really cool to see your reaction to either a full album from mewithoutYou - Ten Stories maybe - or Sprain's Man Proposes, God Disposes)
One of the best rock/blues rock albums of all time, and one of my favorites of all time. I believe Liddiard is one of the most underrated song-writers of our time, so I absolutely love seeing more people discover his & his band's work.
Surprised to see you cover this album but they're one of the great lesser-known acts in Australia. I saw The Drones live and I gotta say they sound even better - one of my favourite concerts I've been to. They've since gone on hiatus and Tropical Fuck Storm have taken they're place (with Gareth and Fiona remaining) and are still putting out awesome music
This is incredible music, certainly outside of my usual listening but worthwhile certainly. Thank you for doing this one... Loved some of the crushing and atmospheric sequences...
Such a great album. Gareth Liddiard might be my favourite lyricist and singer, he has such a way to pull you in his stories and make you feel raw emotions
You looked tired at the end and I guess this shows well how this album doesn't really pull its punches, at least not emotionally. The band doesn't exist anymore, it transformed into Tropical F*uck Storm which plays a bit more punk-ish music. Still, this album and the previous one, Havilah, are truly masterpieces and I'm happy that you (mostly) liked it. Honestly I was expecting you to suffer much more with all the dissonant guitar content and Gareth's singing. I find it fascinating how he's able to get so emotional and out of tune but somehow land on crucial notes in tune once in a while, so my brain has enough data to reconstruct the rest of the suggested melody 😄
I think you described what I couldn't. I tried to figure out why this all worked despite being so noisy but it never dawned on me that the important notes were exactly as they should have been. You hit the nail on the head with "enough data to reconstruct... the suggested melody"
I'd recommend checking out Gareth Liddiard's newest band Tropical Fuck Storm, like a more creatively experimental accompaniment to The Drones... ua-cam.com/video/RCpwN1d7as0/v-deo.htmlsi=Rf3EySgx9u0FvGhN
Honestly, I don't agree with you on Nine Eyes. I thought it was a pretty cool song. I liked the female vocals and I thought the guitar solo was pretty interesting. I like some noisy music so the solo didn't bother me like it did with you. I'm enjoying the album. It's pretty unique. I like the vocals and the music is great.

One of my all time favorite albums, so hyped to see you covering it
One of my favourite records, this was such a pleasant surprise!
Truly amazing Aussie band, totally dwarfs most of the artists that come out of Australia.

@CriticalReactions yeah, and I think it applies to guitars too!
Great comment
Love this band so much. This and their last album really get me.
would loooove to see you react to Closure in Moscow's "Soft Hell"... i'm sure it will be a DELIGHT
Hell yeah if you really enjoyed this then Tropical Fuck Storm - Braindrops will be right up your alley!!!
Reminds me of Nick Cave but more crazy and powerful.
