@@MarkkuPilarinen “Polly, want a cracker?” is a well known saying. I don’t know the origin, something to do with offering food to a parrot, I think. Over time it became something one might jokingly say especially if they were talking about or near a parrot. The guest’s name is Polly, and the daughter was going around offering guests crackers, so when she got to Polly and offered her a cracker, and said “Polly, want a cracker”, it was funny because the saying is something of a joke. That’s why her mother threw the coat at her.
I absolutely loved that wonderful lady that played Aunt Pauly. She was a hoot! I loved her character Mother Dexter on Phyllis. That was a spin-off from Mary Tyler Moore with Cloris Leachman.
@@tanyalake4957 if you are suggesting rascism you can forget it because I loved Florida. I just think Hermione with her facial expressions and line delivery was more of a laugh riot!!
In an interview right before she died, Bea Arthur was asked how Maude and Dorothy (from "The Golden Girls") would get along. Bea replied that while they could wear the same clothes, Dorothy would tell Maude to calm down a little bit. Don't get so worked up.
I was a junior in high school in 1974. I remembered the show. It's interesting to see again after all these years. Bea was such an incredible actress. I remember her in Auntie Mame!
Thank you so much for posting this episode @TheRet'Network. This is one of my favorite Maude episode. To be honest I loved all of Maude episodes. I have great memories watching this show with my Mother. 💜
Judith Lowry (Aunt Polly) also appeared in an episode of a children's Saturday morning American history tv series during the Bicentennial in 1976. The episode was about Sybil Ludington, the 16 yr old daughter of an American Revolutionary War Colonel who rode 40 miles through the Connecticut countryside warning colonists of approaching British soldiers. Judith, wearing Colonial garb, was sitting in her house window when she received the warning and encouraged Sybil by shouting encouragement to her as she rode past. Judith also appears in another "Maude" episode (The Election) as "Judith."
Gad! I loved 1974! I just looked up Judith Rawly, Aunt Polly (and Mother Dexter on Phyllis). Her husband served in WWI and they had 6 sons and 3 daughters. Her sons all served too. Wow!
I like the other maid much better. this maid and Maude are far too much alike. the actress would have been a much better fit for Maudes's sister or smthg like that
If anyone wants to see more of "Aunt Polly" watch Judith Lowry as "Sister Prudence" in the movie "The Trouble With Angels" with Rosalind Russell & Hayley Mills.
Jeffrey Hathaway Lowry was a true original, all right. Try and catch the Mary Tyler Moore spin-off series “Phyllis”-Lowry is unforgettable as ‘Mother Dexter’.
The date in a show doesn't necessarily have to live up exactly with a holiday. It happens all the time that a showb airs a week before the actual holiday.
Great episode. But I was curious about one of the female party guests. (10:25 she is sitting down in the background of this segment) I just noticed there is also another female party guests back there too, but I am referring to the blonde one at 11:00. Here she kind of resembles an older Dale Evans Rogers. The IMDB actual character list for this episode accounts for all of the main characters except for the party ‘guests’ with no speaking lines. But the only ‘Party Guests’ listed in the credits under “uncredited,” are the names of three men who are all fairly old. The question I have is: WHO is the older lady in the background with one of the uncredited party guests? This woman looks very, VERY familiar and I’d love to know if she was a famous actress from earlier days of film. PS: The only characters in this episode who are still alive as of July, 2023, are Adrienne Barbeau (the daughter), Brian Morrison (the grandson), and Mitzi McCall, the fighting wife who arrives later with her husband and old aunt.
Back when television production wasn't lazy, and they did BOTH a Christmas episode AND a New Year's Eve episode..... in today's time you MIGHT get a Thanksgiving episode, and then they're in hiatus for 10 weeks.
Its a shame Hermione didnt last a few more years at least, she wouldve been a great sparing partner for Estelle...sophia having a british friend, or the girls maid.
@@markwhitman9029 im saying she died a few years after this, meaning she wasnt around for all the great shows to come. I was making a remark that she wouldve been a great acting partner for the girls, im sorry you misunderstood my statement i hope i clarified.
Maude , Dorothy or whatever other name she has gone by for the characters she has played , she'll always be one of my favorite female comedians .
Me too be awful with my favorite on Maude I am one of my favorite on The Golden girls
She was in a series (almost Golden Palace) and her name was Amanda.
She's most definitely NOT an Amanda.
Bea Arthur...
On Broadway she played Vera and Yenta!
Mrs. Nagatuck rocks! She’s always hilarious 😂

“Polly, want a cracker?” The way Bea throws the coat at her. 😂😂

Doubt Bea knew the line was coming.
What does that mean? I didn’t understand it. (English is my 2nd language)

I'm a young old lady and the songs said it best and then there's MAUDE
Polly, want a cracker? The timing was perfect. Hats off to the writers and delivery.
One of my favvsssss
That has to be one of the most hilarious moments in tv history!! Comedy perfection!!
Best part was Maude throwing the coat at carol after she asked it.

I loved the look on Maude's face with that, too, right as she threw the coat at Carol.
I am watching this Gem, and it is December 3rd, 2023! Early Happy New Year to everyone.
This was one of the BEST and FUNNIEST shows of the 70s!!! Bea Arthur will remain a legend for her performances!!
Everyday we getting closer to the new year 🥳🥳 it's a beautiful thing when you live to see another year.
Very well said.
I agree sooo much
Maude & Aunt Polly: a preview of Dorothy & Sophia in a few years!
❤Rue and Bea❤
Man!, I wish they were still making gold. TV needs it!
Donny Hathaway in the theme song. Brilliant
Aunt Polly was a RIOT!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Polly? Want a cracker? 🤣
And then there was Bea. Her face spoke volumes. One of a kind.
For sure! But I always wondered if she ever had any work done between Maude and the Golden Girls.
@@mj6962 Yes, I was wondering that too. When you see her here, she looks older, in some respects, than she does in TGG, very odd.
@Lina Zavala Ohhh. Ok! well thanks for the info!
What a sweet elderly woman. Also,.. R.I.P. Beatrice! 😇
So funny and a great cast ensemble!
Most of the cast have passed away except for Adrienne barbeau, who played Maude's daughter, Carol. From Ms. Harper Stacey.

Didn’t she die shortly after Phyllis began? A few of the cast members did.
Yes mother Dexter on Phyllis. She was a laugh riot
Judith Lowry appeared in both seasons of Phyllis. She passed away halfway through the second season
