  • It has taken me 5 years to restore my 1990 Honda CBR1000F Motorcycle, the main problem was getting parts for a 25 year old bike, I was determined to do the job right and thanks to Mr Google I eventually obtained all the parts I needed for the rebuild.
    The parts came from all over the world, thank heavens this bike had a long production run, otherwise it may have been an impossible task.
    The second problem was me... although I am a retired small engine mechanic (Qual), after the motorcycle strip down I couldn't believe how complex the engine was and I lacked confidence in my ability to get it back together.
    Then one day (many months later) I said 'dammit' I have to make a start and with the help of an excellent genuine Honda Workshop Manual I got it all back together with no bits 'left over'.
    The engine needed a new timing chain and adjuster, hone the cylinders and new piston rings, all internal chains and guides replaced, all rubber hoses and seals replaced and of course all gaskets renewed.
    The Frame was in excellent condition and the only parts that needed attention were the brakes, with new a rear disk and overhaul of the rear and front callipers with new seal kits and disk pads, also as the drive chain had rusted, so I replaced the front sprocket and chain.
    Everything else checked out ok and all the electrics are good, fitted a new battery and checked the charging voltage.
    First test start of the engine was a joy to behold, hit the starter and a couple of 'coughs' later she burst into life, oil pressure came up straight away and within 2 minutes she was idling over at 800rpm.
    I am very happy now and much relieved that the time and expense was worth it.
    My only wish...
    Please Mr Honda, reintroduce this fabulous machine, it is a joy to own and ride...
    Final Note: I do apologize for the sound quality, the video was taken on a Canon G12 Compact Camera and the sound quality of the bike running could be better, in real life the Bike sounds fantastic.

    Kudos! Great video! Back in 1987 I bought a new 1987 Honda CBR1000F Hurricane w/the rarer Monza Red/Black color scheme. Had a lot of fun w/that bike thru the rest of the 80's! Great decade and great bike! It did everything I asked it to do.

    Wow, lots of respect for your patience to restore it! :) Must not have been easy to find parts. Isn't she beautifull :D The bikes back then looked better than the bikes from this age. And the colour looks really 90s as well which makes it even more nice.

      Hi Mate, thanks for the comments, I agree the bikes of today just don't look right, especially with the exposed rear wheels.. uck.
      My CBR is a true Sports Tourer and it handles and performs like a dream.
      My best and longest trip (accompanied by my brother on his CBR) was from Brisbane to Hobart (Australia) and back which is over 2300 km's one way, the bike performed faultlessly through all types of weather that we encountered.
      A great classic bike with a long production run from 1989 - 1999, I wish Honda would do a re release of this amazing machine.

    Absolutely gorgeous bike mate. Had one of that exact colour scheme myself. Any other colour scheme was second rate even on such a great bike! Wish I still had mine, but wasn’t comfortable on the arms/wrists below 140kmh with the standard bars. Love what you’ve done with yours. Absolutely beautiful bike. Cheers.

      Thanks, yes raising the bars has made a huge difference, the bike is still running well. I have replaced the tyres as the old ones were getting a bit hard (rubber that is). Now a new job is replacing the front fork seals as one has started to leak, think I could get Warranty after 30 yrs?😆

    I've a 1990 red and black cbr 1000f that's been sitting for 7 years. I'm going to pull it out of the hanger and clean it tomorrow and begin its rehab from it's docile state. Lovely machine. Thank you for the inspiration.

    • @gregclaydon6727
      @gregclaydon6727  7 років тому +2

      Hi Mike,
      Thanks for the comment and yes you won't regret it, this bike is a suburb all rounder well worth the effort of restoration.
      Depending on the Km's it maybe a good idea to replace the Cam-Chain Tensioner, for as far as I am aware it is the only component that may cause a problem.
      If you are intending a full rebuild, then purchase a genuine Honda Workshop Manual, it is well written and easy to follow, the after-market one is rubbish and not worth buying (I put mine in the bin).
      My CBR is still running well and no problems to date, it is a joy to ride. I do hope to produce some short video clips when out on my next big ride.
      All the best.

      Greg Claydon Hello Greg, I'm the second owner. Bought it with 27,000 miles and now has 54,000 miles and was spot on until electrical gremlins started to creep in. Started the work on her but got sidetracked due to a divorce and life,but now's the time. I bought a Kawasaki z750s which is a nice machine but CBR is just a more solid machine and less frantic. And I have the Honda shop Manuel and also the chilton Manuel. I'm going to be your 18th subscriber. Yippee

    I had one in 2000 and it’s the best bike I’ve ever had. Only down side is it eats chains and sprockets it ridden in anger but aside from that it’s great and a really good touring bike. Traded it for a three year old GPZ 1100 which is also a wonderful bike albeit a little heavy. Wishing to buy another and searching at the moment. Riding an old 2006 Daytona at the moment which I’ve had for 8 years. Rare as rocking horse shit now. Great video and I admire your skill!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿👍

    Great work and awesome bike. I reside in Alberta, Canada. 14 years ago I purchased a 1987 Hurricane 1000F with 62,000 km on her. I drove it as it was for many years till I decided to bring it back to her original glory. As my bike will reach the 30 year old mark next April according to the serial number, I wanted to have it complete. I too searched all over the world and have brought parts in from many different countries. All plastic and small parts were dropped off yesterday for finial paint. It is 99.5% complete with 100% original parts from the serial number year. The only parts I am missing are the rubber boots that go over the mirror arms, and the rear tire and chain guard assembly. I had a lead on the guard from Germany but the language barrier and communication was very difficult and after a couple months the guy stopped responding. The bike has 69,500 km on it now. The engine has still never been opened, but it will have the valves set before it goes back together. (slight valve tick when its cold, which was common at the time) But at a local track I was able to reach a top speed of 289 kmh. So in my opinion there is no need for motor work. One upgrade I am considering but am reluctant to do, due to the "keeping it original" is moving the rear caliber support to the outside of the mounts so I can put a wider tire on. As it sits stock, there is only about 1/2 inch space between tire and brake bar. Todays bikes have much larger tires, and in my opinion, it does look better with a fat tire on the back. But on the other hand, as I have passed the 40 year old mark, speed and performance has been pushed aside by pride and nostalgia and the joy of owning a piece of sport bike history...

      @gregclaydon6727  8 років тому

      Thanks for the comments, sounds like a great bike, Honda's only problem is that they make bikes to last but I guess due to the age obtaining parts becomes a big problem, have you tried CMS Motorcycle parts in Europe ? they seem to have a good range of parts for older bikes (but expensive).
      Well good luck with the rebuild, the bike is worth the trouble and yes I do agree the larger tyre would look good and give you better traction.
      The weather here in Queensland Australia is now perfect for bike riding as we are now in our Winter months with temperatures running at 8 - 23C. My CBR is still running perfectly and revs out beautifully, it's very smooth through the entire rev range, my only concern now is my age (underline), I turn 69 tomorrow but I am still feeling very confident in the saddle. I have been riding motorcycles all my life, but I know the day is fast approaching where I will have to hang up the keys for good... but dammit not yet, as the Harley boys say 'Screw it Lets Ride..."

      +Greg Claydon... it's the beginning of our summer here, +25c on average. I hope to have the hurricane back together by August. Contemplating on replacing the timing chain and tentioner assembly as well. The original honda kit is still available out of the USA. Thanks for the tip on the parts place, I can't remember if I checked there, but I will check again anyways. With the amount of time and money I have spent up to this point, it's a shame to have one piece of the puzzle missing. To bad we don't live closer together, could have a vintage racer street rip. lol. I would love to see some still pics of your bike. I will send mine when it's complete later this month. As for your age... It's just a number, as long as they don't pull your permit so until then, "keep your feet on the pegs, and your right hand cranked"

    Bike looks fantastic, I had a CBR1000FJ brought new in 1989 which was subsequently stolen (I lived in London!!) and replaced it with a new 1992 CBR1000FL which I had until i moved to Hong Kong in 1993.
    Anyway fast forward to now 2017 and I have just brought a 1989 CBR1000F exactly the same colour scheme as yours which I have registered in the UK and it spends most of its time in southern France where we have a home.
    I also own a BMW S1000RR and a Kawasaki ZXR750J along with a number of cars!!
    Cutting a long story short, I was keen to buy the latest ducati panigale for my European rides until the CBR came back on the scene. Needless to say, once I rode her, any other bike went out the window.
    My one has 23K miles on the clock and has been restored by a friend of a friend before I got it, it is not as perfect as your one, but its tidy and very clean.
    Bottom line, the CBR1000F was a bike ahead of its time and is a timeless classic, I'm looking to add another one or two to my garage.
    Great video, nice story and I hope you are still enjoying riding it as much as the rest of us are.

      +Darren Axe
      Hi Darren, thanks for the comment, the bike is still performing well, just due for its first oil change. What I noticed most during the rebuild was the quality of the manufacturing, the alloy cases are perfectly machined and everything fits together like a Swiss watch, Honda made this bike to last. My only real complaint is the quality of the plastic used in the Fairings, it has cracked in a couple of places, but luckily it is not difficult to repair.
      Enjoy your bike and stay safe...
      PS: I found a good source of parts is CMS ( www.cmsnl.com/) They are based in Europe and have a very good system in place for parts supply for older bikes.

With yours make sure you keep an eye on the timing chain, if it gets noisy (when idling it's most noticeable) you may have to look at replacing the chain and tensioner. Also make sure your tire pressures are spot on otherwise the handling becomes a bit 'sloppy', otherwise you will have a great ride, it is a great bike, one of Honda's best in my opinion.

    Awesome, sounds better than a new model, and looks better too. With my dad we want to do the same, but for example the headlight is really weird :/ and the engine sounds like if the tensor doesn't do his work. In low RPM do -clack clack clack- but on medium and high nothing.

      Hi Mate, thank you for the comment, the Bike is still performing well and I hope to do a video update soon.
      My bike was the same re the noise, noisy on idle but ok on the road, I was worried that the chain may break so this is why I did the full strip down. As there was very little wear inside the engine I think that if I found a way to replace the Chain and tensioner without the strip down, than this is what I would do.
      I believe now that there is a UA-cam video showing how this can be done.
      Cheers from Banksia Beach Australia.

    Well is is now August and perfect riding weather here in Queensland, Australia.
    The Honda is still running well and I have just performed its first service since the rebuild, so far I have run up 3500 km's
    She is smooth as silk and thankfully no oil leaks, she revs out beautifully, I could ask for nothing better. My last trip was out to a country town called Kingaroy, it is west from where I live and I clocked up 350km's. I think my city riding days are over as the roads are now too congested, but I do enjoy the rides out into the country, much less traffic and clean country air, it is what bike riding is all about.
    I am thinking of getting a helmet cam so that I can record some of my trips to share with those of you who may be interested.

    Sorry for the sound quality, the Canon G12 is not the best camera to use for sound, I noticed the motor sounds a bit 'clunky' in the video, I think there was a bit of echo from the surrounding walls, in real life the motor sounds fantastic. I did a test ride of 400km's on the 3rd Oct and everything is good, the bike is very smooth and revs out freely. 100% happy, no problems to report.

    i have a cbr1000 fl red and black
    my question is
    apart from the joy of doing the work ( which is to an excellent level )
    what was the point of tearing apart a working bike completely instead of just doing the essential bits and sprucing up the fairings and paint?

    • @gregclaydon6727
      @gregclaydon6727  4 роки тому +1

      So sorry for the very late reply, reason was that the engine had to be removed and stripped down, this is the only way to get to the timing chain (in the centre of the engine) that had to be replaced (before it failed). So what you see in the still photo is how far the engine had to be stripped down to get to this part, I also found wear in the alternator chain drive and the secondary drive, so replaced those as well. While in this state is was easy to check out all the other components including brakes, bearings, electrics, not forgetting the radiator and water pump and carbs etc.
      The frame had a few minor rust spots which I repainted, the Fairings were perfect so apart from a polish they are original.
      It must be remembered that the Bike was manufactured in 1989, so now over 30 yrs on the road and still running like new.
      Sorry for the long winded comment, but funny when you start a job it just progresses from one thing to another.

    I just bought a 1990 1000F and it took a while to get it running. The temperature gauge is usually 2/3 of the way to the "H" and when I can get it running on a highway it cools down a little and gets to the middle. I see yours is in the center while idling. does yours also get hotter while riding in the city? It makes me nervous that it is too hot.

    • @gregclaydon6727
      @gregclaydon6727  3 роки тому +1

      Yes the Honda does run hot, I think later models have a lower temperature range (like modern cars) but be assured this is normal. When in traffic like around town or steep hill climbs the temp climbs quickly and the electric fan cuts in and depending on the speed you are doing the fan can remain on for some time and the gauge will show up towards the max but this is normal (also comes back just as quick), I have never had an overheating problem or lost any fluid from the cooling system, the system works as designed, my only complaint is that on a very hot day the hot air escaping from the side vents gets my my legs a little warm.. But great in Winter..
      PS: My CBR is still running well, about time I did another video, maybe a road trip..?

      Hi, thanks for the comment.
      I decided to drop the jet size down a little due to the inside of the cylinder head and the spark plugs showing a very black soot, the ideal color should be a dark gray. The engine is still running smoothly and throttle response is very good with no lag, I will be checking the spark plug color again after I run up a few more Km's.
      Congratulations on your purchase. Only comment I have on the CBR's is to make sure your tyre pressures are spot on as I have always found the cornering ability is not the best if tyre pressure is allowed to drop even a little.

      Hi Kevin, as there are 2 normal bulbs in the headlamp assembly and both should be on for both Low and High. I think your problem is that the filament for the low beam has blown in one of your bulbs, or maybe a problem within the wiring harness. Although the original bulbs in my bike were still ok, I decided to replace the bulbs with the new Phillips high intensity type which give a better light, these bulbs are recommended for motorcycles as the are made to handle the extra vibration that is inherent in most bikes.

    • @gregclaydon6727
      @gregclaydon6727  8 років тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the comment.
      The Camchain tensioner can be replaced without removing the engine, I would suggest though that you also replace the rocker cover gasket as the old one may be a little hardened with age.
      As to the Camchain itself, this is a far more difficult job and the main reason why I removed and stripped the engine down. Since those days though I have seen on UA-cam a video that shows you how the replace the chain while the engine stays in the bike. The guy cuts the chain and re-loops a new one around the crankshaft and then uses a rivet rejoining tool, looks very plausible to me and would save heaps of time and angst.
      After chain replacement re-timing the the engine is easy if you follow the Honda Workshop manual, don't buy an after market manual as I found it to be totally useless, spend the money on an original.
      Good luck with the fix..

From what I remember they were off a Honda 750 of the time, the fork diameter was exactly the same as the CBR1000. Maybe a trip to the Bike Wreckers would be the best way to track them down? Sorry for the late reply... MPG is around 32, it is strange that riding fast or slow doesn't seem to make a big difference to MPG
      I would love to lower the cruising RPM a little if possible, but would require a custom made rear sprocket. The revs at 105 kph are 4000 rpm. But when overtaking there is plenty or power in top gear, so no need to change down.

    Great work, well done. I am stripping my SC31 down and giving it some TLC after a 2047Km ride. Not as through as your rebuild, but some well deserved TLC.... check it out: ua-cam.com/video/n7KH4pBqkJg/v-deo.html
    Wow, your one really is like a new bike... Well done.

      Hi Greg, sorry for the very late reply, I've been away having Prostate and Kidney stones removed, plus other issues, but that's life... hey.
      Yes it is a 'rock solid bike' and well worth the restoration, the Honda Shop manual is the way to go, its well written and easy to follow, the most difficult part of the job for me was to reintroduce the motor back into the frame, the way I did it (with a mate) was to lift the frame on a winch and then lower it on to the engine, you have to push up on the rear of the frame to get the mounting bolts into place. Also a bit of advice is to make sure you have the right tools for the job, especially a 3/8 torque wrench.
      If you need any assistance re the repair please let me know. My email theclaydons@optusnet.com.au
      Cheers, Greg
      PS: The Honda is still going well, just lacking a rider at the moment.

      Hi, no it is the poor quality sound pick up on my camera (as mentioned in the video), also there is a lot of sound bounce off the shed and fence. When I rebuilt the motor I was careful to make sure all Honda specs in the manual were met, also all the internal drive chains were replaced including the cam chain and tensioner unit, piston and cylinder bore clearances are spot on as are the valve clearances. Out in the open it does sound different, very smooth and idles beautifully at 800rpm same a when it was new.
      As of today it 26th June 2017 the Honda is still running perfectly and a joy to ride. I have recently purchased a helmet cam so my next video will be taken out in the open and taking you on one of my favourite rides into the mountains.
