  • Liu Chungliang, better known as John Liu, is an actor and martial artist originally from Taiwan. His career focused primarily on low-budget martial arts and action films produced in Taiwan. Despite his talent and martial skills, he never had the opportunity to participate in Hong Kong's biggest budget productions, such as the famous films from the Shaw Brothers studios and Golden Harvest. These companies were known for their large productions and for launching many martial arts actors to fame, but Liu remained in the field of Taiwanese independent cinema. In this video we are going to review the controversies that have revolved around this character

I don't care much about any actor's personal life. So, if I enjoy their character in a movie, I just watch it.

You make some great videos going over the backgrounds of kung fu actors and characters, and this one is no exception. I knew there was some controversy with John Liu, but I had no idea just how much he was involved in. I appreciate the research that went into this.
My only questions with your videos is why the reliance on AI with the voice and visuals? I guessing it's because English isn't your native language (not that it matters... you don't need to speak English to provide good content.)?

Thanks for your support. And answering your question, English is not my mother tongue, otherwise the future has arrived, and AI is here to stay.

I am like 95% sure that I have seen an old Kung Fu movie with John Liu where he did not use any high kick. I think he was acting as Hong Xi-Guan (洪熙官). Quite sure it was him. Maybe before he learned Taekwondo...

I'm sorry, but every time I see him in a movie my very first thought is "Heyyy! It's Kung Fu Mickey Dolenz!" 😂 You never forget his kicking style once you've seen his movies! Just no one does it like he did it. I'd absolutely enjoy seeing him versus Jean Claude Van Damme in a movie!

WOW!! Some of his stories do sound over the top, His parents work for NASA, Grandfather was a Shaolin monk, it could be true but it sounds like a story a kid would make up to make friends.🤣🤣I've recently heard about the human trafficking that he was or supposed to be involved in, that I would like to think isn't true, however shame on him if he did. John Liu was one of my teenage heroes, although Tan Tao Liang was a bigger star than him, I still think that John Liu had better screen presence.

John Liu claimed that a "Sensei Yano" (not an uncle monk from the Shaolin Temple) taught him Karate in Japan/Okinawa.
It's highly unlikely that John Liu became an "absolute" Karate champion, or became a 3rd dan in Karate in 1958, at age 13 or 14. Nowadays, child black belts are common; back in the 1950s and 1960s, they were virtually nonexistent.
I heard about the charges of John Liu and human trafficking in Spain many years ago. I hope it isn't true, but if he went on the run and escaped to Vietnam, it probably is true. And if true, it is disgusting.
The movie Trinity Goes East was filmed in Vietnam, where John Liu settled.
The late stunt actor John Ladalski respected John Liu's martial arts ability, but said he was "a man of many stories." Which seemed to imply that John Liu embellished, or simply made up many stories about himself.
To John Liu's credit, he was the only kicker who was able to convincingly trade kicks with Hwang Jang Lee onscreen.

Yes, he is a fantasist, but don't be disillusioned, that doesn't detract from his martial skills.

so Tired of hearing about Bruce Lee, he was Movie Actor, He was in Fantastic Shape, Was he a real Fighter like Chuck Norris, NO! He wasn't a Demi god Either, There are much better Martial Artist Than Bruce, and he was not Humble at all, He was Arrogant, angry, Frustrated etc.., His Daughter is just like him too, do not like her at all. So, after pissing off the Legion of Bruce Neophytes , i'll leave it at that. As for John Liu, i have much more respect for him than Bruce, and I hope the Human Trafficking Rumors are not True. God Bless you all.

    • @pookiepook7351

Chuck a real fighter? 🤣😁 lol Chuck was the champion of "paddy cake paddy cake baker's man."
You call points fighting real fighting? 🤨🤔
Bruce was Chuck's teacher for a while...Chuck was paying Bruce for private martial arts lessons.
And if Chuck, or Bob Wall or Joe Lewis or the other "real karate champions" were so badass, then why didnt any of them ever challenge Bruce to a real fight through the media, through the newspapers.
If they thought Bruce was such a fraud, trust me, they would have tried to beat him up live on television (while the cameras are rolling) or something to embarrass him....but they never did that...gee, I wonder why?
Is it because they knew Bruce was the real McCoy?--and they feared they would just end up destroying their own reputations if they lost to the "little Chinese guy?"
Dude, don't be an ignorant turd all your life. Read some biography books on Bruce Lee and you'll finally learn the truth.
