What did people call it than?
It could have been called groove metal back then but it was different because of those 7-8 string guitars. It was new for alot of people because they were playing in a unique polyrhtmic time signitures with those 7 strings

When I first heard this song, back in 2003, I completely lost it. I thought this is something only a computer can do. Then I saw live footage and I couldn't believe it. It wouldn't let go of me, so I started to practice all day long and gradually I understood more and more of it. Now I know what is going on and it still makes me laugh. This is as incredible as it used to be. Still.

@@Roy-ck9mb I am mainly a guitarist but I also play the drums and bass. Checking out Meshuggah gave me a deep understanding of feel and groove. I started to see how the music works, how a certain rhythmic motive felt different once it moves through the bars. I remember I started out transcribing stengah. It took me a while to figure out the motive was in 11/8, but when i finally did, I began to understand the concept, the philosophy, of it.

That's why this album sounded like nothing else that existed.
Probably why the album was called "Nothing"..

I mean you're thinking more like Korn I think because they also popularized downtuning with their Ibanez universes atleast 6 years before Meshuggah even acquired 8 strings, somebody just had to just push it further and that's them actually. Also they plainly redefined what metal was in the public eye in general before core kids even got close to discovering Meshuggah. Although admittedly even those dudes ripped them off atleast somewhat before.
@@tonypepporoni1271 nah meshuggah influence surpassed Korn. I love Korn but they used the 7 string in a very traditional power chord way. You won't find that sort of playing with meshuggah.
@@metalheadblues Also if they didn't make the 7 string popular, chaosphere would not have came out in the way it did and they still would have still been making their weird genre mixing death metal they did before pioneering djent
