Ismo has his own calm style which I like. Playing with words is one of his things. Hes also a decent songwriter and guitar player.

Ismo has studied few years physics in Jyväskylä University, so Maybe his analytical thinking comes there and finnish language has a thousands of multi meaning words and all the other words comes multi meaningful when they are bent. Bending words is one of the peculiar things of the language.

I think the reason why Ismo is so popular is, apart from his observational comedy, he's not a threat to anyone. He's not trying to sell any hard opinions. Just easy going and happy guy. Difficult not to like.

Ismo is great, you should definitely watch more of his stuff. To be honest, I'm not a fan of most finnish comedy. There are a couple of bits of an Icelandic comedian talking about finland, and finnish people. Other than comedy, I have a couple of you haven't seen them. Simo häyhä the greatest sniper. And the soldier who fought in 3 armies is another one.

He's incredibly funny, no matter what language he uses. When he's performing in Finnish, he plays with the Finnish words in a way, which cannot be translated to English. But the opposite is also often true; he sometimes plays with English words, and those jokes wouldn't make any sense if they were translated to Finnish. He often jokes about how English is his second language ( which is true; all Finnish people study English in school, starting at the age of 7, from elementary school, all the way thru the high school, college and even university ). So he understands English language perfectly well - that's why he can play with words - but his accent is funny, because speaking is a totally different cognitive process. And in Finland we do not speak English every day - usually. We speak Finnish instead. As Ismo says, it's very popular in Finland. So we do not get much practice, and that's why we don't often sound like native English speakers - and yet, we understand it perfectly well - well, not all of us obviously, but quite a large percentage of Finnish people is either fluent or at least good enough in English. Especially 95% of the younger generation of Finns (30 years old or younger) can understand English fluently or very close to fluent. Rest of them (5%) are just slackers, who haven't learned anything useful so far anyway - and probably never will.

I don't know how it is nowadays, but we used to start the second language in 3rd grade (around 9 years old, not 7), and you could choose between English and Swedish. Some other choices are likely available at different schools.

I think ISMO performed in Glastonbury couple of years ago. That's one of the (if not THE) biggest stand-up comedy festivals in Europe. Anyway, here's an old clip from Dublin, Ireland, which was one of his early experiments of performing stand-up in English: ua-cam.com/video/Dwpbvu4NEdA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=ISMO

I like the way Ismo is playing, that is he is not an intelligent guy. The play of Ismo is that he is playing stupid. That is the base of his comedy IMO. If I'm wrong, please enlight me =) Sry, but English is only my third language xD

Love your accent, btw. I would love to learn that. I think that's Glaswegian accent. I would be the only native Finnish person who'd sound like Robert Burns :)

The style Ismo is performing is actually a typical Finnish way. The speaker doesn't want to make him or her a number just saying how things are. Maby the most chilling conversation in Finnish history has been the one between General Ehrnrooth and a British general. The Brit had heard rumours of the Russian Army beeing in Finland. Ehrnrooth answered that yes there are 2,000,000 Russian soldiers buried in 2metres along the Finnish border. End of discussion.

I think he is a very intelligent by doing stand up and also differs from other in some things. First, a/an or the make a difficult for non-native people difficulties at least here in Finland.
And second, these are not sexualistic, political towards anyone. Every children can look at this. This makes his so good in Finland and now hopefully in U.S too. This is his stand up and will be it.
he also have done and will done very good stand up songs with quitar.I think this is exceptionally intelligent crazy humoristic stand up.
We of course understand this more deeply, but I hope at least some songs could be translate to English.
Some teachers there have done this stand up in their teaching lessons and this in a honour for him and we Finns learn also much more😊

Funnily enough, in Finland we say something shit is shit, paskaa. But at some point in the last decades when something was good like you told about a killer band you heard lately, you say it's kovaa paskaa - hard shit. Or tough shit. Stuff like this is what I usually pay attention in languages. Like in italian when they wish each other good luck, it's literally "into the mouth of the wolf".
One thing he had already handed to him or prepped the audience for, but didn't quite touch on was "if I take a shit". Like where are you taking it from, why are you taking it?
Back when he did comedy in Finnish, he had a piece when there was a discussion of gay marriage or something in Finland and they finally got the right, he pointed out how some people say that it doesn't bother them if they don't come hitting on that person or do their gay stuff amongst themself or whatever some people used to say. He made the funniest thought play of someone waking up in the morning, starting to brew coffee, taking a morning shit, listening to the birds sing and suddenly: like smelling it "gay people. There are gay people somewhere" and their whole day is ruined. And then when being gay was defined as a disease or illness or something back in the day, would you call to your boss in the morning and say that you feel kinda gay, you're not coming to work, nope feels like it's gonna last all day.
