    Excerpt #1
Town stammered out that this wasn’t a normal bear as it wasn’t scared of them. He blew loud blasts from his whistle and thumped on the tent poles to frighten the bear away. Lilly had been connected with the Blue Ridge Parkway Deputies for the next 90 long minutes.
Now usually when a caller dials 911 they are in or near a house, road, or other landmark they can provide to relay their location. Lilly and Town were out in the woods and realistically beyond the typical service area of first responders. The dispatchers went back and forth with Lilly trying to understand exactly how responders could get to them, but they were not familiar with the trail and its intricacies.
After ironing out the hiker's rough location, dispatch sent responders to the camp, but they were at least thirty minutes away. Lilly and Town were instructed to stay inside their tent but expressed that they were not comfortable staying inside it because they couldn’t see the bear. They thought that trying to make it back out to nearby Highway 3 would be a safer bet, but were overruled by the dispatcher. If responders could not locate them, they would not be able to ensure the safety of the hikers.
As responders scrambled to round up a means to reach the hikers, the bear huffed and chuffed at them through the tent fabric. The hikers positioned themselves as far away from the tent edges as possible and huddled in fear as the time passed slowly.
    Excerpt #2
As Carol and her dogs approached the overlook at about 1 PM, they must have walked right past a very dangerous observer concealed by the brush near the trail. It isn’t clear whether the black bear had followed them unnoticed down the trail, or if it had suddenly appeared behind them.
Hiking down the trail, Carol was staring ahead of her when she was driven forward and onto her face. The impact came from nowhere and briefly disoriented Carol, but the searing pain and pressure of a hungry black bear's teeth being driven into the flesh of her lower leg brought her back to reality.
As Carol rolled to her side she could see a black bear latched onto her leg and started to kick at the bear with her other leg. As the bear slashed her legs with its paws while it tried to fend off her kicks, the puncture wounds in her legs tore and bled.
After a couple of well-placed kicks to the bear's head, it switched its attack to her other leg. It caught her lower leg in its jaws and shook its head to set its teeth deep in her flesh.
Thoughts of what to do must have raced through her mind as she determined how to handle this violent attack. Carol kicked and yelled as the bear bit into her legs over and over while it clawed and gashed them. She knew this bear was not defending itself as it came from behind to attack her. Realizing this was a fight for her life, Carol resolved to fight to the end.
As the bear bit and tore at Carol’s legs, her dogs ran around barking and charging toward the bear. Their dashing and darting around confused the bear and distracted it from finishing killing Carol.
    Excerpt #3
Now realizing she may be fighting for her life, Laurie kicked viciously at the bear. She put so much ticked-off momma power behind her kicks that the small sow bear slipped on the mud and rolled onto her back. This gave Ellis and Laurie space and time to flee once again.
As the hikers fled back up the trail, they screamed at Blake and Hannah, telling them to run. At one point Laurie turned and punched the bear, exhibiting her own momma bear power to defend her cubs.
Blake had recently graduated from the College of William and Mary and approached the situation with a more academic mindset. Initially, he thought of the cries for help as a prank but soon realized they were not made in vain. Seeing the blood on his mother's wounds confirmed the seriousness of the situation.
As soon as the bear came into view, Blake tapped into his nature buff library of bear-battling tactics. He told the other family members to get loud and get big. Whether he knew this was a predatory attack or not was not indicated in any source I could find, but his advice was solid gold. In an act of unison, they each began to yell and jump around like a pack of enraged cavemen. They threw sticks into the air and raised their hands above their head in a show of force.

Camping in bear country with no bear spray is just about the dumbest thing a hiker could do. When are people going to stop saying "Oh bears are harmless - they run away if you make noise"? Yeah, most of the time the black bears will do that - but most of the fatal bear attacks are aggressive black bears who suddenly see a human and think "Meat's back on the menu, boys!". And if all you've got is a whistle and a toothpick of a knife - you're the prey.

My daughter takes my mastiff on hikes and they've ran into many bears. I think it just depends on how the dog reacts. My mastiff is very quiet and calm and has never caused an issue. Last summer they ran into a mama black bear with cubs and they just slowly backed away and everything was fine. Mama was watching them too!

that's their home not ours. If you want to hike in their home then be aware and respectful or its game over. If you want to swim in an ocean you better be thinking about its inhabitants swimming below you too! Many can and will kill and eat you given the opportunity. Humans dont own the planet and we aren't the apex predators so we should act accordingly.

@@pattieh5118 miss or mrs. patty I don’t want to gender you correctly, that’s up to you and your physician! I’m just kidding. I grew up in Guam and I gotta admit that the one thing that the regular peasants like me where afforded when corrupt politicians don’t try to buy you votes is trash pick up and no sales tax because we are a territory and not a state. So if you leave your windows down on a Monday night the local tomcat pisses in your car, any night to be precise. And trash pick ups was Tuesday in my neck of the boonies . So it’s hotter than the devils behind in Guam to be clear. And if you rolled down the window as a kid you needed to roll it back up . Once one Tom cat pisses in your car and leaves his scent laden film everywhere you have to be diligent on rolling up your windows after doing a cleaning because there becomes a territorial piss battle happening every time you show up to a new Tom cat’s territory. Guam has a wild dog, cat and chicken issue, not like where I live in Hawaii where they brought in mongoose to kill rats when they aren’t awake. So if you don’t do ammonia mixtures the dogs rip apart a your trash then the cats scavenge before chickens scratch your trash everywhere to pick of maggots. That’s why you keep your trash ya close as mail. It’s personal information that your giving out in some way or another. Even if you burn mail! “ a fed bear is a dead bear “ is the saying. I’ve been between the love of my life and a black bear sow with two cubs . And if a car didn’t drive by I would’ve have seen her! Thirty yards behind ma a national parks ranger was giving a” bear aware lesson and doing interactive work with a campfire consisting mostly of kids( awesome work 👍🏼) and I interrupted with the question of my predicament during his lesson asking “ what do you do if your girlfriend gets out of the tent as I’m walking towards it and there is a bear with her babies?” He responded as he just saw me walk out of the fire’s light and creep back. I pointed it out and he gave the kids the best demonstration. I’m kinda pissed because people left their coolers out and the bear actually ate all the food and crushed every alcoholic beverage in a glass bottle. The mama bear was literally sitting upright on a grassy knoll human like and her two cubs overlooking at us ! It was beautiful. But she met the criteria. Sequoia national park and potwisha campsite 7 to be exact

Just moments ago I woke up to scratching which I thought was my dog kicking in her sleep. I looked down at the dog which was motionless and still heard scratching. I got up on my knees to look out the window and here's a 300lb bear looking right at me 2' away. Me and this bear have been matching wits for the last week, he's been on my porch, in my kennels and broke into the garbage pen. I might have to get the warden involved on this one. That bear is starting to get used to gunfire.
