Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the Bear Mountain Nordic Ski Trails near Dawson Creek in Northeastern British Columbia, Canada. The Bear Mountain Ski Hill is a very inconspicuous place for a predatory bear attack. For miles around the largest town in the area, Dawson Creek, lay miles and miles of cultivated farmland cut from prior forests.
The elevation here is around 2700 feet high and varies only because of the slight roll in mostly flat terrain. To the south of town is a pretty expansive stretch of forest and the final approach of that forest is the Bear Mountain Ski Hill. It’s aptly named as it barely qualifies as a hill, with only a 300 foot drop from the top of its paths to the bottom. The dense stands of Quaking Aspen, Balsam Poplar and various fir and spruce trees to the south extend just past the ski hill and shroud it as a part of the wilderness to human users.
According to the pictures on the website, which I have posted a link to in a pinned comment, Bear Mountain is a great place for area residents to learn to ski and snowboard in the winter, but also a great place to wonder and hike the remaining seasons of the year. Each fall the varying stands of deciduous trees and evergreens offer hikers a brilliant palette for their photographs.
Wolverine trail is part of the ski hill’s nordic ski trails system and is flatter than the downhill trails. Visiting hikers during the months without snow can walk these trails and vent their energy as well as the beautiful embrace the trees offer them. That is exactly what brought 30 year old Leosette Canoy here.
The energetic and happy woman worked assisting disabled adults for her job after immigrating to Canada 15 years ago from the Philippines. She had met and married the love of her life, Gary Hansen while serving Dawson Creek’s community. Hansen admired his wife for her appreciation of the outdoors, stating that she frequently went camping and hiking and enjoyed photographing the Canadian wilderness and scenic landscapes.
Forty eight year old Analyn Shurtliff Bartolome had brought along her niece Wennali as well as her teenage son, Kelly. The four nature lovers ventured out together on the evening of October 3rd, 2022 hoping to get pictures of the fall leaves as the evening sun set across the forests, but this day the fall changes brought a more desperate visitation than they had bargained for.
Just as dark began to set in, a little after 7 PM, the four family and friends were returning to their vehicles after enjoying their hike and pictures together. Leosette, Analyn and Wennali walked side by side and Kelly meadered slightly behind, still glancing at the colors and trees, making his reluctant retreat.
As Kelly walked and thought, he heard a strange thumping on the ground behind the group, as if a large man was stomping toward them. He quickly turned and could see a large black bear in full gallop closing in on the four hikers. Kelly yelled out, “bear! Run! Run!”.
A little information about predator behavior is in order to understand what exactly was going on at this time. Predators across the board, from sharks to tigers, will approach their prey whenever eyes are not on them. Sometimes they sneak up stealthily, and other times they storm in quickly. The two different approaches serve two different purposes. When a predator is sneaking up on a solitary prey animal, a subdued approach is frequently utilized, to avoid inducing a panicked escape by the prey animal. When there are several prey animals a quick and aggressive charge by the predator can be used to scatter the prey into a vulnerable and chaotic retreat. As prey animals retreat they frequently direct their vision and consequently their defensive tools, like their mouths and claws or antlers away from a pursuing predator making a safer ambush for them possible.
Converging suddenly on the hikers had exactly the intended reactions, as the group immediately fled in panic. Now, before you start chiding the hikers about running, consider a few things. They were not expecting to see a black bear, or likely any animal while they hiked. They hadn’t brought bear spray, an air horn nor a firearm as proof of their expectations. They had numbers and were hiking in an area frequented by people and located only a few hundred feet from the paved Loiselle Subdivision Road. This isn’t a remote hiking trip or an area where bear activity is regularly reported.

What surprises me was the fact that it was a black bear and the fact it took on 4 people. But above all that is the fact that one of them was ready to sacrifice life to protect a family member. This actually turned out much better than I would have predicted at the beginning of this story. The 4 hikers didn't have any weapon or deterrent.
It is very concerning that 4 hikers around 200 feet from a paved neighborhood road were attacked by a bear.
Before I started watching Scary Bear Attacks I would have not thought it probable that a bear attack could occur at this location on a group of 4 hikers. Since I do watch Scary Bear Attacks I realize that the unexpected does happen and continue to say I won't go into where a bear might be alone or unarmed.
I'm glad friends organized fund raisers to help with medical costs, because these brave women (who directed the younger 2 to leave and seek help knew they might die but would at least spare the younger 2 in the group), really need to focus on recovering and healing.
I thought all Canadians had health-care insurance, though. Maybe they weren't in their correct area or something.

We run cattle on both sides of bear mountain. The community pasture is to the west and south. Due west and north is were the family has its farms.
The walking trails and pass through gates we had to build as per government access.
The attack was unfortunate most of the bears are not especially aggressive here.
A resident grizzly comes through every spring and fall with other parts of the range west towards tumbler ridge most notable for a large grizzly population.
This was a guide territory my step father worked extensively and as teen spent many years in that area and fencing and clearing land at the foot of and on the mountain.
    There are lots of bears.

This attack brings back memories of a similar but horrifyingly tragic attack north of this location, but same general region of British Columbia. On August 16, 1997, a predatory black bear attack took place in Liard River Hot Springs. I will leave your readers to find that one. My question is, what is it about this region of black bears makes them so much more predatory than southern or even their western counterparts. This is an issue in Algonquin Park in Ontario, Canada as well. These bears show no fear of groups of people and behave predatory despite by accounts being otherwise healthy animals.

I've seen two black bears in the last few years not even looking for them. One in Greensburg PA just walk out of the woods into a parking lot, look around and go back into the woods. This was in town. The other one is here in NC where bears haven't been in more than 100 years. Just on the edge of town sneaking around corn fields and then disappeared into a small half mile patch of woods. Yes, black bears are around and can show up. But for tte most part it's find, except when you win the lotto and it's not....😮

Hello. I am a Veteran and experienced Outdoorsman. I enjoy watching your videos. I seem to always have the same question. It puzzles me, that people would venture into Bear country, without a firearm for protection. I have had several encounters with Bear in Northern Michigan. When people trespass on Bear land, you better be able to protect yourself. That is common sense. I feel silly, having to tell people this. Maybe some people should not go into the woods. I guess that some folks just don't have common sense. Animals live in the woods that can kill you. Don't be foolish
Always carry an appropriate firearm. Douglas Lobdell Jr.

Many Americans can not wrap their heads around the fact that it is illegal for most people to own handguns, let alone carry them in the woods. Yes, it is stupid, but it is what MIT is. The black bear population in BC has been expanding for the last 40 years. Outside of the Vancouver area, bears should be expected on every trail. I live in the Fraser valley and we have bears wandering around our streets on a regular basis. At the very least you should have bear spray.

Well…..there goes that theory that black bears are not predatory 🤷‍♂️ having encountered one on my property I usually carry a handgun while working outside…..At least I feel I have a chance of survival.

I'm surprised a bear would act like that! Definitely predatory behavior. I'm surprised it would treat 4 people as prey! But I am not surprised it happened in the fall- bears are more aggressive & hungry in the fall.

we know that the area of black bear populations in North America are most of the 48 lower States and of course all over Canada. I myself have encountered a black bear while camping in NE Minnesota along the Gunflint trail - while sleeping in our tent. We had guns but not high powered ones best for use against bears. I'm afraid these Filipino's husbands were not giving good advice to their wives. That is not a good look for Canadian men. Anyone who has lived in bear country most of their lives would not allow their loved ones to venture unprepared into bear country. I hope both women have recovered to a level of having a fairly normal life.

I'm not a "nature or woods" guy given what I've learned about bears from your channel as well as others. The shear terror of what bears are capable of is more than enough to keep me away from bear country! More people should do their research before they go camping or hiking. I'm constantly reading about people being unprepared and unarmed, at the very least carry a good sized 🔪, ax, bear spray, even a a thick stick that's sharpened on one end so you can stab and beat a bear off a friend or loved one, arm yourself and educate yourself if you're going into bear country!!!

What medical expenses??? They are in Canada!!Was it for therap afterward like phsiotherapy, etc.??? Ambulance or helicopter medic ride? I know those are not necessarily covered. Maybe they didn;t have good jobs with enough sick time so lost their jobs?? But hospital care/stay and surgery, doc visits...all that is paret of our universal health care.
