The Ken Burns Documentary series on the History of Jazz is a must. Bing Crosby was right when he said, “Louis Armstrong is the beginning and end of American Music.” His structures are still used today…. Btw, checkout Armstrong’s live duet of the Classic, “Summertime” with the greatest female jazz vocalist of them all, Ella Fitzgerald. Still one of musics most important recordings. In New Orleans (birthplace of both Armstrong and Jazz) we live our music heritage everyday……. ✨

    In the ‘50’s in America….
Having Louis Armstrong introduced by Bing was groundbreaking. Helping promote Jazz.
One of the best type of music ever!! Thx

Ts important to note that the biggest stars pushed to have Black Jazz Artists in films . Remember the segregation was widespread then , but to have Crosby honoring the art form calling out the Jazz Greats by name was important too. These were the top musicians of the day, but mainstream America might not have seen them without this kind of exposure.

At 84 this is the music I grew up with! It was Bing, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Big Bands, etc. I consider Bing the BEST CROONER EVER and Louis Armstrong as the BEST TRUMPETER EVER!!

You should check out the movie too! There were a lot of movies made in the 1950's that featured SO MANY great musicians!!! That's how many of us learned about these people and heard their music for the first time.

You should react to Louis Armstrong's 1928 recording of "West End Blues". His opening solo is amazing.

Those guys were pure class back then! Back in the 70s my buddies and I went to see Count Basie and His Orchestra at the Music Hall (no longer there), in Houston. I love jazz and Big Band music. Man, those cats could swing!

Louis Armstrong the most important person in American music in the 20th century. Introduced jazz to white America and blues. Towards the end when Louis sang the nonsense syllables that’s called scat. Things were bad even in the 50s when this movie was made blacks couldn’t stay at the same hotels as whites and in many places had to enter the buildings in the back alley. Look for Ella Fitzgerald (the First Lady of jazz ) and Louis duets on you tube. Perfection.

Wonderful reaction, as usual. If you watch the movie "High Society", you will find that the entire movie is just as magical as this segment was. It includes Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly with beautiful performances as well. Jazz music was born out of the black community who had no voice in mainstream America, politically or otherwise. They used their musical instruments as their voice, and in doing so with such powerful prowess, they were recognized more and more as a people with genius and humanity equal to all the other cultures of the world. Louis Armstrong was the Martin Luther King of this movement.

I haven’t bothered you for a few weeks now but you reacting to Louis here (and Bing, what a smooth voice!), I will once again insist: you ain’t heard nothing until you have heard his interpretation of "Saint James Infirmary" 😉

And believe it or not The film had Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly as well. It was a loose adaptation of The Philadelphia Story

There is a sophistication to the best jazz that most young people do not intuitively grasp that more seasoned individuals do perceive and so appreciate. The movie "High Society" is just a 3 or 3.5 star film, everything considered, a remake of the 1940 black and white semi-classic "The Philadelphia Story" with Cary Grant, James Stewart, and Katherine Hepburn. Choose first "The Philadelphia Story" with its 4 star or better merited rating as your Saturday night watch, and then later catch up to the sleepier paced "High Society" flic as an entertainment.

This film was just on the cusp of the end of jazz as a dominant musical force. It remained and influence but it was not to survive as mainsteam. The movie is one of my favourites, and Sinatra managed a long run into the 1980s. But poor old Bing, my Dad's favourite, just became too mannered to keep up with Frank.

Music of all genres can be played anytime and anywhere. Jazz can be played this exact way today and in some clubs it still is. There's just not that many people interested in it...they'd rather have rap or Taylor Swift. I don't know why all people can't like all the different types of great music.
