My father started out his life as a forester, he fought wild fires and he managed control burns. All throughout my childhood, he would always tell us the importance of a control burn. How it would keep a land healthy and thriving. Its nature's way of keeping the slate clean and the forest healthy. Control burns are vital, you are amazing and dedicated to your land to use them.
This looks like our place right now. Currently gearing up for another California wildfire season with a month to go before burn days are ceased. Controlled burns ward off pests, weeds, overgrown forests, and enhance homestead defensible space. Our neighbor burns his land every other year to kill of the pesky tick population that affect the deer, boars, and coyotes near our neck of the woods. Good job Arms family! Keep it up!
I always helped my Dad do the burn off. We always did it end of February (in Georgia). Always liked being out on the farm with my Dad. Precious memories.

We've got the tallest red cedar tree in the world up here in Michigan on South Manitou Island. One of the three rivers that flow through the capital city of Lansing is called the Red Cedar River.
As a farmer and an evacuee of the Carr fire that broke out last summer, I had to reply to your comment. Currently, controlled burns are permitted during burn season which runs roughly through mid April during the California rainy season. Rural residents must check with Cal Fire and get a county permit, but are allowed to burn up to 2 acres at a time. All fires must be cold by 5 pm on burn days. Brush burning is also permissable only during this window of time. County funded organizations do the best they can with limited resources from capitol hill during this time by cutting and clearing brush and dead trees in residential areas. All residents must maintain a 100 foot defensible space around their residence during fire season. I am just California farmer, but if only the dems in Sacramento would listen to us north state folks and have annual controlled forest burns and better forest management, many of these man made fires could avoid loss of life and property. It should be noted that both Carr and the Camp fires we're started by mechanical failures of man made equipment.

Yes, I think dead branches and other dead stuff on the ground will fuel forest fires. I go to our State Parks and they have signs up not to collect wood, so it piles up and, to me, becomes a danger that allowing campers to "clean" would be a benefit.

I just got a notification from my city last night about a fire that got out of control. Probably someone trying to burn like this or a just burn off a small fire, but without knowing what they were doing and during a VERY low humidity time when fires can quickly spread. I want to do a controlled burn on my property- just a smallish area of woods, but there's no break between us and the woods on neighboring properties, and I've never done a controlled burn before. I'm afraid I'd be starting the next wildfire in our part of GA, and we don't have many wildfires here because so many people do controlled burns. I'll have to do more research, contact the FD and other local resources and see what I can do to set one up for next Spring. Thank you for sharing what you do, how you do it and why. Great job being a good steward of the land.

In the county I grew up in, all you had to do was call dispatch and they would send a page out. I was on the volunteer fire department and a lot of farmers would just have us do their controlled burn for them. People in the small town would go out and watch the burns. It was the town's entertainment.
We didn't have the volunteer fire department involved, but we did get most of the neighbors involved (very rural area)--if we all burned together that meant that wildfires wouldn't sweep over us later that year. Those that weren't directly involved with burning would bring out the lunches, and we'd all break bread together. This was necessary since we lived so far from a town or city that had a fire department that could respond if we had a bad fire. Great memories from my childhood.
It's probably useless to comment on a year old post but my observation just reminded me of how I used to control burn my old place. I used a leaf-blower. I used a gasoline machine but now, with advancements in the battery powered tools, a cordless leaf-blower would be ideal for spreading the fire in the right direction and along your line where you initiate your burn.

I understand the pros & cons on doing what you do. I don't understand how you had so much cedar trees, but if you say it's a problem I'm sure you're doing what works for you. I love to watch your channel. Between your channel, Keeping it Dutch & Justin Rhodes' channels I've learned a lot. I'm going to try and build a raised bed garden with the idea of growing my own fruits & veggies. I'm handicapped & cannot kneel nor bend down so I knew I needed a raised bed garden. My plans are 2 fruit trees, growing my own potatoes, carrots, eggplant and several more veggies I like along with some strawberries & other fruit.
We are from Maine and our goats always eat the evergreens down to nothing first. I often cut them down for winter feed and now my herd comes running at the sound of the chainsaw.
I can see both sides of this coin. Control burns can definitely help, and add nutrients to the soil, but letting the leaf litter decompose adds nutrients also.

Be careful Daneil...people will tell you that's pollution! And you might be burning down habitats for the gray field mouse (lol). They don't know to much about control burning. Even the Native Americans used it. Ya did a good job and good video about how to use fire.
The federal government comes through every year or so and burns out the under brush in the federal game reserve that butts up to our property. If its fall time it makes for great deer hunting for us on our property 😂.
That's like in California. They have massive fires every year and everyone is all like omg global warming or something and those of us that know better are just sitting back shaking our heads...like no that's mother nature taking care of her self. It's not her fault millions of people decided to build subdivisions in wild fire country and if your state government took preventive measures or made it so property owners didn't go to jail because they set a leaf on fire on their property, those fires wouldn't be so bad.

I live in upstate ny, and ya ny is like one of the wettest states ever! The burn bans and no fireworks is b.s. . On the fire ban tho you gotta understand that the bottom half of the state has no snow left and the leaves and brush is dry. Up in Saratoga we have snow and ice left, in Albany the capital it’s bone dry
The gardener was it a bonfire? I’ve got a standing metal fire pit, a gas station across the street and a volunteer fire department down the road. Sometimes I have fires during the bans but never had a problem. A couple of weeks ago a neighbor had a large dead tree cut down, onto the lake we live at . So we had 2 huge bonfires on the ice. The neighbor did call the fire warden to let him know. But we were on the ice so the fire wasn’t going anywhere. Even on water the fires burned for 2 days
I always enjoy burning season! Here in Kansas we have a burn Group and burn are pastures and friends around. But don’t go over the same place for about 3-4 years. And also maybe look in to a drip torch for lighting!
We Californians live with fire danger. Yes, we wish there was more management and less blame going around. I live where the fires were the worst last year. Scary times, didn’t see the sky for weeks, but we did not burn. So many people still without permanent housing. I hope that the fires of the past few years will change the policies, time will tell. Maybe they can vote on fire control, without partisan politic...yeah, that likely will not happen.
The gardener that would never be allowed. Cattle ranges are very limited here now. There are many, many more thousands of acres of trees to burn here, hopefully we won’t have to burn them all to learn the lessons we need.

We own respirators for that very reason now since moving here from the bay. If we had a bigger voice in Sacramento, things would change for the better around here but until that day comes, each family should prep for fire season and participate in controlled burns during burn days. Keep an emergency evacuation kit at the house so you can evacuate at a moment's notice and maintain defensible space around your residence. God bless you and yours. #shastastrong
Bay Blonde , yes we take precautions. Our property was burnt during the Jones fire of 15 years ago or so. We had already cleared our 10 acres of manzanita, we made sure the grass was cut close,. Our house and barn were saved! We evacuated driving through the flames. Very scary! We are going to install fire suppression sprinklers on the house this summer. You do what you can. In summer I have animal carriers and photos packed easy to load boxes. Glad you weren’t hurt by the fire, we know so many friends from both Carr and Camp fires that lost everything. A very tough year!

It is burn time in Kansas as well, drove through the flint hills over the weekend and saw several large burned areas already. They burn regularly, maybe not every year, and it shows as there are no cedars at all just clear grass prairies. Looking back in history, mother nature did the burn ing by starting fires with lightning and burned uncontrolled for hundreds of miles. That is why some areas had few trees when the pioneers came to the area. The pastures or properties that are not burned or controlled look terrible and if let go too long will be no good for anything not evev pasture. There is one breed of sheep that I read about that does eat eastern red cedar trees, it is the black belly or Barbados sheep. They will eat the small ones and strip the big ones as high as they can reach including the bark off of the trunk, which kills the tree. Love your videos and what you are doing ther.
We lived in Florida during one of their big forest fire events. Definitely not a controlled burn like yours but rather a scary and dangerous situation. Like you said though, it was amazing to see Mother Nature reclaim an otherwise devastated plot of land in such a short time. It came back healthier than before. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.

It’s something that is used a lot here in Australia because if you don’t keep the dry fuel on the ground clean you end up with devestating wildfires that kill entire forests because they get too hot while a controlled burn just removes the dry stuff on the ground burns some of the lose bark on the eeucalyptus trees many of which need fire to open their seed pods so they can regenerate the trees will send out new green shoots within days of a controlled burn

Oh my gosh...fires that are larger than a burn pit or a BBQ grill; frighten the living daylights out of me! Could not help it -- the whole time your fire was going, I wanted to grab things to extinguish those flames! Being a severe asthmatic, I look at all that smoke and absolutely panic. Whew!!! Daniel when we moved on our 1/2 acre we cut and burned nearly 60 cedar trees down! I hate cedar! We still have 4 huge ones but my husband will not cut them down. It's OK though as we're about to move to Missouri and the land won't have cedar close enough to worry about. If there's cedar choking out the oaks then they're going down! Lol!

I live in Wisconsin in a small country next to DNR Forrest and Prairie so they do controlled burns every spring to help control the natural Prairie wildflowers and trees,also kill off the mosquitoes larvae and ticks. But I do feel bad the birds nests ect burn up. But I understand it has to be done. Look forward to seeing more videos of your Family,homestead life and of course seeing Bella,Gemma,Bear, and Lambert....so adorable! 🙂💯💕
The Martin Family just bought 22 Acker near Andalusia Alabama. I can't wait to get the property cleaned up and ready to plant . Hope to make it a U pick I'm years to come. And raise a small group of livestock. Guys like Keeping It Dutch and yourself inspire me.
Be careful Daneil...people will tell you that's pollution! And you might be burning down habitats for the gray field mouse (lol). They don't know to much about control burning. Even the Native Americans used it. Ya did a good job and good video about how to use fire.
The federal government comes through every year or so and burns out the under brush in the federal game reserve that butts up to our property. If its fall time it makes for great deer hunting for us on our property 😂.
That's like in California. They have massive fires every year and everyone is all like omg global warming or something and those of us that know better are just sitting back shaking our heads...like no that's mother nature taking care of her self. It's not her fault millions of people decided to build subdivisions in wild fire country and if your state government took preventive measures or made it so property owners didn't go to jail because they set a leaf on fire on their property, those fires wouldn't be so bad.
You have a lot of experience with that. I would be afraid of starting a forest fire. Maybe that comes with growing up in California. Don’t hold that against me 🤣 we left as soon as we could. 18 years ago. Loved the video.

The burn ban laws in NY make zero sense. Between the snow on the ground and the seemingly constant rain, it is probably the safest time to burn.
I live in upstate ny, and ya ny is like one of the wettest states ever! The burn bans and no fireworks is b.s. . On the fire ban tho you gotta understand that the bottom half of the state has no snow left and the leaves and brush is dry. Up in Saratoga we have snow and ice left, in Albany the capital it’s bone dry
The gardener was it a bonfire? I’ve got a standing metal fire pit, a gas station across the street and a volunteer fire department down the road. Sometimes I have fires during the bans but never had a problem. A couple of weeks ago a neighbor had a large dead tree cut down, onto the lake we live at . So we had 2 huge bonfires on the ice. The neighbor did call the fire warden to let him know. But we were on the ice so the fire wasn’t going anywhere. Even on water the fires burned for 2 days
I always enjoy burning season! Here in Kansas we have a burn Group and burn are pastures and friends around. But don’t go over the same place for about 3-4 years. And also maybe look in to a drip torch for lighting!

Yeah California likes to just let there state burn to ground instead of burning or logging . Maybe they cant hug the trees when they burn them lol
We Californians live with fire danger. Yes, we wish there was more management and less blame going around. I live where the fires were the worst last year. Scary times, didn’t see the sky for weeks, but we did not burn. So many people still without permanent housing. I hope that the fires of the past few years will change the policies, time will tell. Maybe they can vote on fire control, without partisan politic...yeah, that likely will not happen.
The gardener that would never be allowed. Cattle ranges are very limited here now. There are many, many more thousands of acres of trees to burn here, hopefully we won’t have to burn them all to learn the lessons we need.
@@kimberli2391 I live in the North state and had to evacuate twice last summer due to wildfires, so I understand where you are coming from. We own respirators for that very reason now since moving here from the bay. If we had a bigger voice in Sacramento, things would change for the better around here but until that day comes, each family should prep for fire season and participate in controlled burns during burn days. Keep an emergency evacuation kit at the house so you can evacuate at a moment's notice and maintain defensible space around your residence. God bless you and yours. #shastastrong
Bay Blonde , yes we take precautions. Our property was burnt during the Jones fire of 15 years ago or so. We had already cleared our 10 acres of manzanita, we made sure the grass was cut close,. Our house and barn were saved! We evacuated driving through the flames. Very scary! We are going to install fire suppression sprinklers on the house this summer. You do what you can. In summer I have animal carriers and photos packed easy to load boxes. Glad you weren’t hurt by the fire, we know so many friends from both Carr and Camp fires that lost everything. A very tough year!

The ONLY thing cedars are good for is furniture. Exploding ceda trees are nasty in fire/drought season. Awesome land management! Can't wait to see it all clean and green! The best distraction is family ❤ Beautiful place you all have. Update on the juicy fruit? Or did I miss it..

It is burn time in Kansas as well, drove through the flint hills over the weekend and saw several large burned areas already. They burn regularly, maybe not every year, and it shows as there are no cedars at all just clear grass prairies. Looking back in history, mother nature did the burn ing by starting fires with lightning and burned uncontrolled for hundreds of miles. That is why some areas had few trees when the pioneers came to the area. The pastures or properties that are not burned or controlled look terrible and if let go too long will be no good for anything not evev pasture. There is one breed of sheep that I read about that does eat eastern red cedar trees, it is the black belly or Barbados sheep. They will eat the small ones and strip the big ones as high as they can reach including the bark off of the trunk, which kills the tree. Love your videos and what you are doing ther.
We lived in Florida during one of their big forest fire events. Definitely not a controlled burn like yours but rather a scary and dangerous situation. Like you said though, it was amazing to see Mother Nature reclaim an otherwise devastated plot of land in such a short time. It came back healthier than before. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
When doing a control fire, do you need to inform your county and/ or fire department? Edit: nevermind you answered my question at the end of the video.👍

It’s something that is used a lot here in Australia because if you don’t keep the dry fuel on the ground clean you end up with devestating wildfires that kill entire forests because they get too hot while a controlled burn just removes the dry stuff on the ground burns some of the lose bark on the eeucalyptus trees many of which need fire to open their seed pods so they can regenerate the trees will send out new green shoots within days of a controlled burn

Guess old habits are hard to change.Totally agree with prescribed burns, and the results afterwards!Also great info about calling the proper authorities, no sense sending crews out when not needed. I can't imagine you don't have a working relationship with your local FD.2 thumbs up!!

Oh my gosh...fires that are larger than a burn pit or a BBQ grill; frighten the living daylights out of me! Could not help it -- the whole time your fire was going, I wanted to grab things to extinguish those flames! Being a severe asthmatic, I look at all that smoke and absolutely panic. Whew!!! Daniel when we moved on our 1/2 acre we cut and burned nearly 60 cedar trees down! I hate cedar! We still have 4 huge ones but my husband will not cut them down. It's OK though as we're about to move to Missouri and the land won't have cedar close enough to worry about. If there's cedar choking out the oaks then they're going down! Lol!

Hey Daniel good video and kudos to you for doing the right thing to protect your land and other property by doing a controlled burn and you did it just the way it supposed to be done so it don't get out of control it's always going to be naysayers but don't listen to them I don't know what they're talkin about way that live in the real world do you did a great job there and yes that grass will jump up now it'll be happy and so we'll all the critters that's going to eat the grass that's going to jump up and the goats don't forget to goats good job good video
