Big. Strong. AND Fast. I think he changed the perception of what's physiologically possible in a really big way. He made professionals look like children on the highest international level.
Depends on what you mean by fastest. Players can be fast in acceleration, can be very elusive and be able to step off either foot, can be superfast over 30 metres or fast over 100 metres. The can be very big and heavy and hard to stop. There is no one fit for all sizes and therefore the fastest is in many ways difficult to select. That is what makes rugby fascinating
Big time. Rugby speed is not the same thing as straight-line speed. Players like May, Habana and Wade who combine elite sprint speed with the ability to change direction, take contact and control the ball are pretty rare. A lot of the players on this list are probably not the fastest in rugby, they're just the ones with the right combination of other attributes to make to most of their speed. Carlin Isles couldn't make the transition to 15s because he didn't have the all-round skillset. Pure speed is not enough.
Agreed. It's quite possible to run a faster 100m whilst hitting a lower top end, and vice versa. Fastest should mean higher top end but those unfamiliar with the intricacies of athletics thing a faster 100m time means player A is faster than player B.
Is speed on a rugby pitch three things rather than one - change of direction, acceleration over the first few metres and sheer top speed. I doubt anyone could excel at all three but Perry Baker’s speed is breath-taking.
If we talking about the fastest player of all time, before the players presented here is a player called Naas Botha.....a prolific kicker and fly half .....but one that was also so fast on the field that he made everybody on the field appear too be in slow motion even when he was not running.
Tondi Chavanga is by far the fastest player I have ever seen in Rugby!! He had skill as well, top speed+acceleration, no one comes close!! Injuries haunted his career and I was so excited every time I saw him play!!
Jason Robinson, Tom Varndell, Anthony Watson, Dan Norton, Rosco Speckman, Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez, Justin Geduld, Jordan Conroy, Tom Mitchell, Lote Tuqiri and I can continue...
Another quality video, nice work. You’re always gonna have randoms complaining about their favourite player not being listed when a video is titled “-est player”, but this one was a good watch 👌🏾
For my money Patrick Lagisquet, Sebastian Carat, David Trick, Ian Williams, Rory Underwood, Nigel Walker, Andy Harriman, Derek Stark, Iain Balshaw and Paul Sampson should all feature, who were all between 10.4 -10.8 100m runners. But hey Jordan Larmour could be in there 🤣🤣🤣
@Joshua Smith Robinson was not an out-and-out sprinter. He was about acceleration and stepping. His top end wasn't that good. I remember seeing him Vs Howlett and it wasn't even close.
I know that comment sections on videos like these will always be 'what about X?', 'can't believe you left out Y', but I do think that Tonderai Chavhanga is a glaring omission on this list. Just about the fastest 15s player I've ever seen
Senatla runs a 10.3 with Habana coming in at 10.4 only one faster is Carlin isles with 10.1 no one else on this list runs under 10.5 so wrong ranking if you look at 100m time.
@@johanbarnard3435 if it's 'well documented' perhaps you could link us to the evidence (and I don't mean a link to someone else proffering the same completely unsubstantiated claim)? No didn't think so... Don't believe Habana could run anything like a 10.4 either.

Good video, not sure these are the fastest 20; Adam Radwan is the quickest around at the moment on GPS data. In the early ‘80s there was David Trick of Bath and England who was 10.4s / 100m as a school boy and some years later still ran 10.4 for Haringey Athletics club, shame his tackling wasn’t up to much, but then again he started as a fly half, in the days they had no defensive duties.
Nice video, but these are definitely not the 20 fastest players of all time. From South Africa alone Rosco Specman, Courtnall Skosan, Lwazi Mvovo, Aphiwe Djantyi and Makazole Mpimpi are all faster than Cheslin Kolbe, who is our best "stepper." Check out some clips on these guys, they've got serious wheels! 😉
If Tenderai Chavanga is not number 1 then your list is wrong. 100m times don't always translate to rugby field speed. Some quick 100m sprinters are slow on a rugby field. Chavanga was rediculous on a rugny field. Never seen anyone like that in terms of pure speed
Jason Robinson?
Doug Howlett?
Jonah Lomu: weight of a prop, speed of a wing, momentum of a train.
Big. Strong. AND Fast. I think he changed the perception of what's physiologically possible in a really big way. He made professionals look like children on the highest international level.
Spot on.
his body balance was insane as well...no one could put him off balance when he was running
It must of been terrifying seeing 18stone Lomu running at you
Rip a legend
Love Jordan larmour as a player, but definitely wouldn’t say he’s top 20 fastest of all time.
he’s just got a monster step that helps out a lot!
All time no chance, current maybe top 50 but defo not 20
His acceleration is very good but Earls and Stockdale are both faster than him.
currently I think he is top 20 maybe top 30 of all time if not, 45
Yeah, his acceleration and footwork are incredible but his top-end speed is a level below the fastest players

Vunibaka, joelli vidiri, Brayton pulser, Jeff Wilson, howlett to name a few. Not a bad effort though, defo in no particular order. 👍

Rupeni Caucaunibuca
I think you could say 4 things if you count deceleration
Aaron Malone : Good point.
What about the fastest forward? Anyone remember Andy Ripley?
@@thedaftestnameicouldthinko8233 Ever seen Pierre Spies? He plays No8, or were you more referring to the tight five?

I noticed that too, serious gas!
His father was a 400m runner for South Africa
90 % of those players are from south Africa and that makes me proud 😊👍🏼🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Half of them are from the Pacific islands
Afrikaa!!!🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
When you say "90%", you mean '30%' though, right.

Tonderai Chavhanga. Probably fastest Springbok of all time.

Nigel Walker ,Wales, was an international hurdler so pretty fast
I think Gareth edwards could easily be on this list
I saw him absolutely done by Cullen in 1997. By the time he got to rugby he was in his mid-30's. Off a rolling start he wasn't significantly quicker.
Jason Robinson, Tom Varndell, Anthony Watson, Dan Norton, Rosco Speckman, Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez, Justin Geduld, Jordan Conroy, Tom Mitchell, Lote Tuqiri and I can continue...

Watson🧐
Perhaps Raymond Rhule instead of Watson.
Good vid mate , but no Jason robinson, doug howlett , josh adams, stuart hogg, louis rees zammit, ollie thorley ???
Christian Cullen ?
RUPENI CAUCAUNIBUCA IS THE FASTEST PLAYER ...CHEERS KAVA POWER
Marika Vunibaka and Sireli Bobo would eat some of these for breakfast.
Martin Offiah , Wigan rugby league club 👍😁.. by far
Speckman???
No Christian Cullen? Dude barely had to go into 4th gear to out run players lol and also Doug Howlett...he was a sprint champion before playing Rugby
Notice how all of them, can side-step at full pelt! R.U., I love it!
If they can side step they are probably not at full pelt which is the scary thing.
Where is former Kenya Shujaas Collins Injera?
hayyyyy barett and jonahlomu fav rugby player

Christian Cullen the GOAT
Kolbe is agility and fast for sure. But for speed he’s not even close to the likes of habana.
his first few steps are great but he doesn't have the top end speed that Habana had.
Both about 10.4 over 100 m
Jason Robinson should be in here
Yeah Jason Robinson and Vincent Clerc are the great missing of this list

Jonah Lomu 💪 and josua Tuisova💪 is the best player fidjian and all black #Kolbe chemin🔥🔥🔥😍
I could still remember I could run that fast when I got chased by a crazy dog

@stella geldenhuys unsubstantiated, but I can't find any decent clips of him. All kind of stepping and filmed on a potato.
Aphiwe dyantyi surely?
Well I’m sure a lot of people could run pretty fast when they’re juiced
Doug Howlett, Marika Vunibaka, Dan Norton,Sireli Bobo, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Keith Earls, Joeli Lutumailagi
