I am a single mom and I did this in less than 20 minutes. I used an angled plier to pull the yellow piece. This is the BEST video on YT for this because you caught all the right angles on the camera. I have an 02 CVPI and this was a beautiful video. My neighbors were in shock that a 5 foot female got under the wheel of a car and did labor in a wig and inch long nails. And they didn't even break! Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much for making this video, you literally saved me $45 in labor and another $15 for the part since I bought it at auto zone instead of the mechanic. You sir are awesome.
This helped me %100. I have a 96 Lincoln Towncar and all of a sudden when I went to go drive it one morning, it would not shift out from park and I had no break lights. I bought the break light switch for about $10 and it took me less then 10 min to install, it all works now. THANKS!!!!!
Thank you for the great video. I changed the brake switch on a 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 manual transmission. The clutch pedal was really in the way hardly any room to get the yellow pin back in the shaft. It took hours to get that pin back in. Had to do it all by feel only. Your video really helped me out. All three brake lights were out and new switch fixed problem. Thanks again for the help.

Update: my shade-tree repair only lasted 1 day. I have ordered the replacement switch from your website--a little thank you for providing the accurate, no BS info on the issue. Thanks again.
Thanks. I was actually able to disassemble the switch by prying open the 3 little catches and used a fingernail file to gently clean the contacts, sprayed some electronic cleaner in there, worked the contact plunger a bit (I think it was hung up), and when I reassembled and reinstalled it--it worked fine. Thanks for the detailed video showing the location and removal procedure. I will keep your parts supply in mind when it finally needs to be replaced.
So my (former) mechanic said he could replace my brake light switch for $125, parts and labor. Thanks to your video and a quick trip to to the parts store, I spent $13 on a switch and 10 minutes putting it in.Seriously, thanks a million for uploading this video, it just saved me over $100. Not only will I be a regular subscriber, I'll send anyone I can over to watch your videos, too.
Thanks again!
Got frustrated at my brake switch. Decided to do the smart thing, come inside, watch a video of a person that actually knew what they were doing.
I was trying to install the thing upside down. Thank you for the clear visual!
... So now all I have to do is replace one of the actual brake lights...
Great vid. Did it just as you demonstrated. I'm 6'5" so it was quite a contortion act to get down there and get to it on my '99 Ranger. Thanks!
I’m 5’8 but it’s still a contortion act, LOL 🤹🏼♀️
Both my lower brake lights were out but the high one worked fine. Decided to try out your suggestion to change out the bulbs, even though they looked fine. Presto, fixed!!! Both were bad even though they looked good. And now I know how to change the switch out if necessary, too. Thanks!
+jefftuckercfii Thanks for checking us out.
Thanks to 1A Auto this is the second video I've followed of yours and probably saved a good deal of money and a job made easy thank you.
+thad life That's great! Thanks for letting us know and for watching!
For what it's worth,
after my brake lights went out on my 95 explorer, I tried new fuses, bulbs and even a new brake light switch, but still had no tail lights. Then, one of my front low beam lights went out. So I got on UA-cam once again to see if there was some kind of repair video for that. Long story short, the video showed me that the front light malfunction, was due to a break in 2 of the soldering pins in my ( lamp out module ), located between the two front seats and underneath the green LED readout screen thing, that displays the condition of certain systems like your fuel level, oil, lights, etc.
In addition, there were a few other pins that needed soldering, which turned out to be connected to the brake lights issue. So I soldered them too and now all of my lights are working again! I watched one video on how to use a soldering iron, and eventually got the hang of it with minimal burns to the module itself.😀
It's an easy fix. And you can get a soldering iron kit for under $10 at Walmart.
Hope this helps. Peace
Thank you so much for the video...I have '98 4x4 ranger so you made this job very easy for me. Total cost $11.76, you saved me so much money!!! Thanks again.
Thank you for the video. My brake lights went out and most articles I read were directing me towards changing the Multi-Function Switch. After watching your video I went to the car and fiddled with the brake switch and my brake lights came on but went off again. I then removed the connector and re-inserted it and my problem seems to have gone away. Thank you.
Great patience and excellent camera work. Too many 'how to' videos are taken during an eclipse of the sun with a tornadic wind blowing over the audio. For such large hands, you seem to have a good sense of touch. I would still be stumbling around trying to install the yellow pin. Again, appreciate this video.
+Bill McCalister Thank you for the positive feedback. We really appreciate it! If you have a minute, drop us a review on our Facebook page to let other people know about your experience with us. Here's a link: facebook.com/1AAuto/reviews/
Thanks, Call ed a shop and the said it would cost me $80.00 for the to replace it.This helped a lot, Cost $10.00 for part, took me 5 min. to install. and solved the problem. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video. The procedure's exactly as shown for a 1993 Mercury Sable. I was able to remove the old unit and successfully install a new one!!Saved me $100+ in mechanic labor. :-)
Thank you for watching!

Thank you for letting me/us know how that bushing goes back in place
Almost identical to my 2003 Explorer Sport Trac pick up truck. Excellent Video. Thanks!!!
All three of my brake lights stopped working and this did the trick. Thank you for the video.
Thank you so much... this video was perfect! Easy to follow and step by step... this was our problem after checking the fuses, wiring and bulbs... thanks again!!
Thank you for this video! Was fixing a friends Mazda B2500 and the housing had broken and it was sitting above the main cable line. Was having trouble figuring out exactly where the switch mounted.
It may be. You may also want to check the wiring to the brake light switch to see if they are frayed and making contact with a piece of metal or something.
Very helpful video. I already bought the switch that I needed to install, so I ordered something else from 1A Auto that I had been meaning to buy. I wanted to support you in order to thank you for the video.
+Eric Schmenk Thank you very much! We appreciate your business and support.
just saying, i love you guys at aauoto, you have helped me so much with working on our families mercury sables, the videos are much appreciated :)
1A auto is the best.
I thank you my wife took it to auto zone they said the lights were allright I replaced them and they both work so much for auto zone.
@krispyfan I would test the switch and if it's good, check for a possible broken or frayed wire somewhere that may be causing the issue.
You could try to, and see if it fixes the issue.
Great video I think I may be able to change it myself thank you!
thanks alot 1a auto for the tip on how to replace my brake light switch for my ford expedition (2001) save alot of money 10 bucks for part
Great job! Good lighting, camera control and narration. Thanks!
+Dwayla Dallas Thanks for watching 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
absolutely true. I'm experiencing this now. But you CAN shift out of park if you turn the key one notch to unlock the steering wheel and you can then shift out of park to neutral to start the car.
@ncbookz You may want to test the wires to see if you have current to the sockets. If you do not, I would test the brake light switch to see if there's current coming from it when you press on the gas pedal. You may also want to check around the break light switch for broke or frayed wires.
You may to check the wire going to the socket with a test light to see if there's power going to it. if there is power to the socket, the socket might be bad, also see if it's corroded inside.
Similar setup in 96 Explorer, but the wire harness has only 2 wires on it. I was only able to get the wire harness to fit on the new switch upside down (or backwards, however you want to call it), but it still seems to work. Don't know why the harness wont fit on it the right way, there is a plastic tab in the middle of the switch that is shaped a little differently than the original Ford part, but as long as it works..
@TopIeaf You may want to check on the wires, and also the brake light switch to see if it's loose or has some frayed wires causing the intermittent situation.
Really big thank you i do it correctly for my crown victoria you are the best mechanical in the youtube some car have safety cover for cutter pin so somebody they will not notes the place of the pin
+rashed Thanks for watching, glad we could help! If any of our viewers needs to make this repair, we carry the auto repair part shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them: www.1aauto.com/1A/BrakeLightSwitch/Ford/Explorer?UA-cam&CTA+Comment&INQX87gg2k
Thanks a lot , it's clear and easy to follow.I changed my switch by myself.
It was a complete mystery!!! I turned the key to on, pressed on the emergency brake, then lo and behold, the third brake light came on, but not the tail lights in the trunk lid!! So today, I decided to start from the beginning. I rechecked all the fuses, then went back to recheck the wires....that's when I discovered it....TWO broken wires!!! Now all I need is the tools to fix them! Thank you so much for your help!!!
Thank you for this video, it was great and you helped this DIY'er save some money!
Hey cheif, will a bad switch cause my car to be stuck in park? And thanks for these vids, your a huge help.
Test the power going to the socket in the light. If there's power to the socket, it could be a bad socket.
my brake light doesn't turn off bcaa told me to fix brake light switch, hope this works, and great job showing a beginner like me.
Thank you for watching! Glad to be of help. Please let us know how the repair turns out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Great vid! Thanks for all the vids you guys post for the town car/crown vic/grand marquis! Keep it up.
+E Lee Kaiser Thanks for watching. We're glad you liked it. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Extremely helpful video, thanks a ton!
would this switch also have an effect on the cruse control cut out, as in you step on the braked and the cruse deactivated when coming up behind a semi? Same set up on a 1998 ford Taurus?
truly helpful - saved me time and money like you said - awesome!
Thank you!
You may want to check to see if there's a loose ground that could be causing this issue.
Great video. My 1997 Ford Explorer XLT backup lights are not working. The bulbs look fine, Fuses look fine. I suspect the backup switch is the culprit. I would like to bypass the switch with a paper clip and test the wire connections to make sure the backup lights come on on bypass. There are many wires on the connector. How do I tell which wires to connect the paper clip to to test?
The issue might be is the wire grounded itself to the body at some point and destroyed the circuit. You might want to bring it to a mechanic and get the problem looked at closer.
@DMLuikens It could be a brake light switch or even a wire coming off of the switch that could be frayed. Hope this helps you out.
@mrmonkey137 You may have a bad ground. You may want to check the headlights and the parking lights to see if there's a broken or a pinched wire. Hope this helps you out.
It may be a safety feature when putting the top down the the vehicle needs to be in park.
@7233910 on most vehicles they are on the dash near the steering column. It should be on the right hand side near the headlight switch.
Is it true that a faulty brake light switch will prevent you from shifting out of 'P' on some Ford models?
Thank you. It's exactly the same way with my 2005 Grand Marquis.
Brake light switch 3:30
Worked like a charm! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks for your video👍
Most likely the issue is if you are getting power to the socket then the socket itself is probably burnt out hence why you see char marks next to the pin.
Make sure that there's power to the switch, if there isn't check the fuse.
We currently do not have a brake light switch that fits the 2003 Ford Explorer.
Thank you for visiting our channel on UA-cam. Have a great day.
wow, same issue and was fixed in a few minutes! thanks
If everything works except for the brake lights, you may want to check the brake light switch to see if it's working. Also check for any broken or frayed wires that may come off of it.
You may want to check the fuses to see if you have a blown fuse.
Depending on how much room you have, it may be a little tricky.
hi, does this apply to my 03 expedition xlt 4x4??? my brake lights only come on when I'm at a complete stop!! not when I'm coming to a stop so people think my lights don't work!!!
@dgrace1983 You may want to test the brake light switch to see if it's ok. If it is ok, also check for a broken or frayed wire coming off of the brake light switch.
Thank you so much
thanks guys, you're doing great work here
Thank you for watching. Please let us know how the repair comes out!

If my brake lights work and the car will shift from park occasionally, will replacing the switch enable shifting normally? Is this at all connected to cruise control not working?
+Carol McCalman Since there could be multiple reasons why you’re experiencing this difficulty with your vehicle, I strongly recommend that you have a reputable mechanic inspect it. They’ll be able to troubleshoot the problem and tell you what part or parts you’ll need for the repair.
Great video. I have a 2006 Crown Vic P71. I replaced the brake light switch but they still don't work. All Fuses are good. Blinkers, emergency lights and running lights all work fine. On the brake switch connection however, there are 5 inlets, of those five, only two (far right and middle) have any power rating on my meter. The wires are all good, and there is no wear on them. Would it be safe to say it's just the connection to the Brake Light Switch itself? Should all five inlets have power?
It shouldn't. You may want to check the shifting linkage to see if it's bound up with rust.
If you have a service manual for your vehicle it should tell you what color that wire would be.
Another point. The master cylinder rod can be rotated, and is not symmetrical. With the rod flipped 180 degrees (by accident), I could not get the new switch on. Checked this video for proper orientation, rotated to correct position, and installed. This was on a 2001 Sport Trac.
TRAILER WIRING HARNESS PLUG N PLAY WAS THE REASON I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS
I have a 1998 ford ranger my brake lights wasn’t working however the third brake and my running lights was also working I check my fuses (#3/7) they was good so next I replaced both bulbs for brake lights still didn’t work but the running were.So next I replace my Brake Light Switch Part No. S37027 it’s location under the steering column still had the same problem. So I when under the rear of the truck and realized that I had a tow wiring harness for trailer I unhook and connected the factory wires back and Now I got brake lights
This is the same concept for your vehicle but the positioning of the switch might be slightly different than what was shown.
Thanks for the help. It helped me a lot with my 2010 accent :-)
@rubenlincoln HI, I would check the fuse first and if it's ok. Test the brake light switch with a test light to see if there's electricity coming from the wire when the brake pedal is depressed.
Will this fix the third brake light also ?
I have 2002 ford explorer xlt and the part that is at the part store has to be wired in . But my problem is the brake lights don't like to shut off like they should . You have to press on the pedal a couple times .
It could be an issue with the brake light switch. You may want to take a look at that. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
wondered if there is a way to simulate what the switch is doing, such as testing continuity on the switch itself, and/or jumping together two or more wires on the harness side, to see if the brake lights come on; just to determine if it is the switch that is the problem.
BIG, BIG Help this video was, thank you!
On my 2005 crown vic I have running lights, hazards, and turn signals, but no brake lights. This specific plug from the video didn't have anything plugged into it, but the brake lights previously worked. The other little plug above this on the brake pedal had a hot 12 v line to it, but even when I connected the two ends I didn't get lights. Any suggestions?
i have a 2000 lincoln navigator and all three lights are off the bulbs are ok would this be pretty much the same thing to replace the brake light switch?
I have a 98 Lincoln Towncar. I have tested the brake light bulbs, replaced the brake switch, and changed the correct fuse but my brake lights are still not working. Any other suggestions?
My tail lights won't turn off. All three: left, right, and center above the trunk. I have to unplug a fuse every time I turn off the car or it kills my battery. Will this repair work? Thanks!
Did you ever get a answer on this question you ask? I'm having the same problem with my lincoln aviator. What did you do to get your lights to go off? Any help would be greatly appreciated
I'm not exactly sure. It may be.
The 2004 will be in a different position because this is for the 2nd generation vehicles where yours is a 3rd generation.
I have an 07 expedtion and gear gets stock on P i have to press the brake several times for it to go into gear, I also noticed the brakelights sometimes dont work.
Do you know if this could be a faulty brake switch?
Thanks for watching Mike. It sounds like the switch may be the problem. If the vehicle doesn't see the signal from the switch then i wont come out of park. The fact that the brake lights dont work either makes me lean towards this switch as well. Unfortunately i do not sell it for the 07 Models tho.
1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Thanks a lot. Very helpful video!
Hey guys I have a car where the brake lights flicker on and off when applying the brake unless I step all the way down. Buy they do turn on, would it be the brake light switch or what could it be?
The issue with my 98 explorer brake lights is that with the headlights off, the brake lights work fine, but when the head lights are activated, and turned on, only the 3rd brake light works, but stays on, while the 2 lower lights do not work at all. I was told that the brake light switch was bad, and needing replacement to fix the problem.
Dude ur a boss!!!! Thank you

Is the locatoion of a brake light switch on a 98 Lincoln Towncar similar to this explorer?
Thank you
Thanks for checking us out! +Info Man
So I have a question he didn't cover on these lights. What if all 3 of your lights don't go off and stay on even if the car isn't running? I'm having that probably on my lincoln aviator.. how do I get them to go off? it's going to run my battery down. And I can't find anything else but this one video on it.
