Joan had a voice bigger than Australia with more ornament and beauty than the Vatican. She was a vocal genius, and the best singer that has ever lived. La Stupenda!
Reading belcunto's words makes me realize how I have lived almost every day for 35 years, just to hear that voice again. I too, fortunately, got to see several live performances. So many greats, but she and Caruso were from another world.
This is the magic of Bel Canto, given by a truly pro in this area...Sutherland knew how to use and impress everyone with her huge voice, great technic and high notes!
I've always listened to her first studio recording of Lucia, but this is really amazing! She did also have a lot of experience behind her - at this point she had sung Lucia 134 times in the theatre.

According to her autobiography she learned as a child. Her mother was a mezzosoprano who had been trained by a great teacher (who himself had been trained by Marchesi). @@rakellcolotta3675 presumably :) I would think a trill would be an integrated part of the Marchesi method, but I don't know for sure. Sutherland used to say that her mother's voice reminded her of Ebe Stignani, so she must have been a heavy mezzo.

Of course the cabaletta is miraculous and brilliant, but it leaves a big hole for the drama that never is really expressed as well as the stunning voice.
droopy and covered is exactly how i would describe the voice too. but it still amazing how at this point she had such agility with the trills, fioratura, and high notes. also, i think that the sound of her voice gives all of the coloratura acrobatics more texture.
