    Just gotta say Rob, you make it so easy, even that which is relatively hard. You never add more verbiage than is necessary as opposed other UA-cam channels. And you never stumble with your words or backtrack or autocorrect. I’ve learned through the years that oftentimes it’s not the student but rather the teacher when there’s a problem with the teaching.

    Thank you so muxh for this tutorial. I have always thought that bossa nova was too difficult for me with all those strange chords that I don't know. But sure I'm gonna try this one!

    Great this is a much easier way to play the changing chord progressions and Harmonies than following along the Stan Getz arrangement which is very difficult.
    Great lesson thank you!

    I used to get called a bit to play for a wedding band that would do an hour of Real Book tunes before switching to the usual wedding stuff. I would have to fake my way through that first set, really only knowing how to comp semi-proficiently and avoiding solos like the plague. I found it hilarious that I loved doing this tune and Blue Bossa most of all, while a lot of the other band members (who did jazz gigs regularly) would just grumble and sigh when the band leader would call out “Ipanema”. Evidently this song is the “Freebird” of jazz, lol.

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  Місяць тому +2

      Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me… but if you’re a rocker and sick and tired of Freebird, then Ipanema is a welcomed change of pace. I used to do weddings as well, and for me the absolute worst tune to play was Pachelbel's Canon in D. 😂

    Little chordname-correction in the A-Part: Fmaj7 - G13 - Gm7 - Gb7#11 (= tritonesub for C7) 😉

  • @pfkmsandiego
    @pfkmsandiego Місяць тому

    nice. :) pretty sure that add 13 would just b called a dominant 13 since it is a dominant 7 with the 13.

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  Місяць тому

      The way I’ve always understood it is that a dom13 chord includes each interval leading up to the 13. So, it’s a 7th chord with three extra notes, the ninth (9), eleventh (11) and thirteenth (13). Using the term “add” indicates that the 9 and 11 intervals are being omitted. That said, I have seen chord sheets that have this chord written G13, but I think that’s because it’s shorter and neater looking. If only we could write it G7+13, but someone decided long ago that a plus should indicate an augmented chord.

      @pfkmsandiego Місяць тому

      @@swiftlessons although i like the way u think about it and i also wish there was a way to b more specific about voicings it appears that as long as there's a 7th interval included there is no "add" added, which also goes for major 7th chords and their extensions. how to properly or best voice a chord, especially extended chords, was always annoying to me and i would ask professors how they kno which notes to omit when they see 11's and 13's in chords charts, jazz specifically, and they'd just say it depends on what the melody was and will b and what the previous chord was and what the next chord will be... i always felt there was a lack of consistency with was "right" but that's a different convo. :)
      like i said, i like ur idea bc it makes things more specific, but that's just not how it seems to b. there's a lot of things i wish were different about music rules and i'm sure u do too hahaha. like, the plus sign being relegated, assuredly against its will ! hahaha
      ur rad. keep up the great work. ✌&❤

    Thanks a lot. Great video. You’re right, I knew those chord shapes from a La Vie en Rose lesson on a different channel. That jazz stuff is something else!
    Nice sounding guitar too. What make is it ? I cannot discern any features that are recognisable.
    Thanks once again. Great lesson as usual.
