We start with hot springs and Robin's birthday and then move on to Bob Emser's shop in Illinois (The Art of Boat Building), receiving some much-anticipated and beautiful pieces for Victoria the dinghy and getting a look at parts of his Haven 12 1/2 named Skylark. His channel and the things he makes are helpful and lovely. If you haven't checked out his tool making videos, boatbuilding videos, or the series he did about our dinghy, it's time. ‪@TheArtofBoatBuilding‬
And finally, back to our DIY wooden boat that's been waiting patiently in Camden, Maine for our return. We're so glad to have you with us. Thanks for watching.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I was watching this video this morning with my 6 year old granddaughter. As we were watching it, I decided to explain who you were and what you were doing. We live around the corner on the same street as Aaron, so we are now on the hunt to find a video that shows him helping. So when I explained that you had a you tube channel , she says “ so he’s real?” Yep he’s real. Still enjoying your adventures and it’s nice to see after all that work you can finally enjoy life. The last scene about the carving on the signs brought me back to a year ago when I went to Italy and the Colosseum, sad to say people carved their names on all the bricks even there. Enjoy your time traveling! PS. The neighborhood is very quiet, you need to come back and build another boat! ❤

That so so very sweet to hear… hope you find a good Aaron video soon! If you pop an address to me through our email address, I’d love to send your granddaughter a post card from us.
And on your carving note, maybe it’s interesting: Not all of those engravings in Rome were likely all that new. Romans during the empire were well known for their sometimes mundane, explicit, or shocking graffiti. It’s all over the place, and we consider now that it is a bit of an interesting time capsule/ documentation of it. -Anne, a humanities minor who is a nerd for the classics

👍👌👏 Oh WOW, what a wonderful birthday surprise = a bath in a hot spring! By the way: Hshrmph mimimimimi 🎼🎶 Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Robin, happy birthday to youuuuu! 🎵🎶 2) Of course I'm now eagerly looking forward to see Victoria sailing. Additionally I'm curious how it is to row the tender with those unique and beautiful masterpieces. I simply love to row.
As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and especially health to all involved life forms (humans, animals and plants).

It's so great to have a tour of Bob's shop! I'm always amazed when I watch his videos at the immaculate space and perfectly organized tools and space. Not to mention the wonderful vessels he creates. Thanks, Bob!
I can confirm from not so great experience the fact that varnish is conducive to blisters if applied to an oar handle. It took me forever to sand it all off!

Traditionally, the whole pulley thing was a "block". The sheave, pronounced "shiv", was the wheel part (the piece which can be produced entirely on a lathe).
Interestingly, the first mass production facility in history was set up by the British Royal Navy to make wooden blocks, which during the Napoleonic Wars were in unprecedented demand for "ships of the line", to the tune of 100,000 blocks per year, which was quite challenging given that they had been individually hand-made. The production facility went by the name of Portsmouth Block Mills, and everything was drived by two stationary steam engines via overhead shafts and leather belt drives with dog clutch engagement. Once it was bedded in, ten men could produce what had previously required 110.

I noticed your crossing the creek with packs fully strapped on. I was taught, many years ago while hiking in the sierra Mountains , to unhook all straps and carry the pack on one shoulder as a safety precaution. If you fall in the fast moving water your pack fills with water and becomes a lead weight, and almost impossible to escape from.
Congratulations and many Happy Birthdays ahead !

Lignum vitae is a fascinating wood to work with, very dense and consistent, and yes, it is self lubricating. Back in the day, we used it to line stern tubes in quite large ships. These days I use it to make nuts and saddles and the occasional bridge for stringed instruments.

There's one possibility to make oars fit your hands. Take a 10mm thick sheet of neoprene and sculp it to fit.

Too bad you didn't have time to get to the pueblas in the Gila National forest area. They are amazing too. Beautiful area with a small trek up into the pueblo.

Quite a long time ago I had posted a suggestion that Bob build a tender for Arabella. I sure wonder if you guys were thinking the same (before my comment) or if there were others suggesting that this collaboration should be a reality. How did this come about?

Kinda funny you pronounce Herreshoff as [Hrr-shoff], while it is actually more like [Harris-hoff] (German for Lord's hope or lord's court) 😅

@17:57 Will the oar leathers get some sort of treatment (e.g. snow seal, boot wax), or do you just let them weather au natural?

Beware all friends of arabella's Channel for the third time in a month the UA-cam algorithm has unsubscribed me from both Acorn to Arabella and the Art of boat building along with Sampson boat company! I wish there was a customer service hotline for UA-cam cuz I would love to throw a fit I have missed out on so many videos

We’re feeling the hits! Thanks for the heads up. UA-cam officially says that’s not happening but we are hearing about it anecdotally for sure.

15:12 A little tension here about the way the timing worked out. Bob thinks quick and shifts the focus.

Is anyone familiar with Cliff Stoll of Numberphile fame? Bob Emser reminds me of him. Perhaps they are cousins. :-)
