Even today these machines are inspiring. Everywhere people line up to see them. People cheering and clapping as they taxi out. I can't think of another machine on earth that garners that kind of reaction or following eighty years later. I love them too!

GOD this plane is just an absolute unit. Everything about it tells you if you face it, you're in deep sh*t. The look and the sound, powerful, rugged and robust - there's nothing like the Jug.

It was a hockey player in a figure skating contest, and everytime one of those figure skaters got slammed against the boards the body parts would go flying, arms legs and bloody tutu's all over the ice, oh the humanity.

Fantastic airplane. That’s history right there, not very many P-47 left in airworthy condition.

Six flew into Willow Run Airport in Michigan maybe ten years ago at an airshow and I think it was five I saw at the airshow in Chino Cal.1999.

Yes. Oshkosh 1882. I was 12. There was twice as many warbirds compared to this years show. I've also seen Bob Hover in his Shrike and Art Schoal in his Super Chipmonk and the Tbirds in the t38's at the Anoka Co. Aerofair in 1977 or 78 it was 42+ years ago now. AND shook hands with Greg Pappy Boyington at the Oshkosh airshow. I've gotten to see the B. Angles in their Sky Hawks. The Concord in Duluth Mn. And many others too many to list.

Wonderful airplane! My dad was a USAAF Cadet but never got that far into training before he got reassigned and the war end. He only flew the P17 bi-plane trainer and the AT6 Texan.

The Mustang might be more popular, the cool kid, the quarterback so to speak. That would make the Thunderbolt the entire defensive line. The foundation that secured the Allies air supremacy. It was a wonderful blessing of tough as nails bringer of destruction. It’s a shame that machinery can’t be awarded medals to honor it’s contributions to the war effort.
    Plus it just sounds awesome.

It's better than the Mustang, faster and tougher! It took out all the top scoring German pilots flying the highest quality built German planes before the Mustang even arrived. By the time the Mustang got there all the good German pilots were dead and the quality of their airplanes suffered terribly by then. All the German pilots were inexperienced green by then because they didn't rotate their pilots, they fought until they were eventually killed and they were by the time Mustangs were there. It's a big myth orgistrated by the bomber command to cover up their big screw ups that the Mustang was better. The truth is that the P47 was capable of reaching Berlin and farther from the very beginning of the war but bomber command, or the bomber mafia is what they were called refused to let American fighters use drop tanks because they didn't want the fighters getting any credit because they wanted to prove the bombers didn't need them because they were all about the bombers. And because of there stubbornness they got 10s of thousands of men killed and lost a whole lot of bombers. They lied and said the drop tanks didn't work which was a lie because some fighter commanders got the British to build some for the P47 and it was able to go to Berlin and back no problem so that famous story we had no fighters capable of escorting the bombers deep into Germany and Berlin was a political cover up for the bomber mafia to cover the fact they got 250 thousand men killed because of their mistake! The P47 could do it all along but took the hit because of them. The P51 definitely had a longer range but the P47 could reach most of Germany from the beginning. The P47N had 3000hp and could do 475mph in level flight at 20,000 ft and had radar in the tail so no one could sneak up on it!! Pretty dam good wasn't it!! But the Mustang was cheaper to build because it was made out of stamped parts were the Thunderbolt had more machined parts but also made it much better built, a higher quality. It was way bigger and uglier and older but that's what I love about it. It was faster than the mustang, had tail radar, Mustang didn't, did all the really hard fighting at the beginning of the war killing all the skilled pilots and better made German airplanes making it easy for the Mustang. Had a better turbo and direct drive kinda hybrid super charging system with a huge turbo charger in the tail and I think two super chargers connected to the engine. 2 or 3 connected to the engine or maybe 2 and 1 was a 2 speed but this thing was blown to the max with inter and after coolers with a huge 4 blade propeller that looked like it had big paddles for blades. That incredible Pratt and Whitney double wasp radial engine that I think sounds the best and could have multiple cylinders blown off and run for hundreds of miles. You can take a Mustang out with one finally placed bullet. More P47 aces finished there tours and went back home to their families than any other fighter! This Plane never got the credit it deserved but now that the truth is out may it finally get the respect it deserves!!!

0:54 That is a P-47D from the Brazilian Air Force, maintained by its oficial museum. The markings are a homage to the last Brazilian pilot to lost his life in the Italian campaign, in May 1945. He was shot down by German AAA flak.

The best fighter of the war! It took out all the best German pilots in the first couple years of the war and left the under trained green pilots in their poorly built fighters for those who came later! The only fighter that was so good it could make you a high scoring ace, and you had the best chance of living to tell about it when you got home! Especially the N model, 3000hp and 475 in level flight. Radar in the tail! It's what I would have wanted to fly so I could live to tell about it!
