Fantastically well filmed video. The shifting focus shots and cinematics kept me interested in something I have no interest in buying! You are getting better with each video you produce.
After a year of contemplation after watching your MKII review, I finally caved and preordered the MKIII. Holy CRAP it has exceeded my expectations! What a fantastic little pocket camera! I use it almost entirely for video but I've never had a more tempting reason to take up photography. The thing performs like a champ and the footage it spits out is amazing. Its stupid expensive, but its worth every penny. HIGHLY recommended. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, man.
I will explain this situation to you in a more detail revealing idea. In the most essential respects the pricing of a product depends on a few events. The manufacturer has decided to keep the pricing that way to have more of a balanced financial gain with the other products of that brand.
I've had this camera for about a week and honestly it is the best pocket camera money can buy. I bought this based on ***** review of the Mark II. Good to see you review a product I actually own :)
Keep in mind that even though the lens boasts an f1.8-2.8 aperture, it's really a 35mm equivalent of f4.9-7.6 due to the smaller 1" sensor, so you won't be getting crazy bokeh with it. But it does remain a really good compact with a convinient 24-70mm 35mm equivalent zoom range and some handy features.
Your review in this video was the deciding factor for me in getting the RX100M3 and absolutely no regrets a couple of months down the line. Paired with my 1 yr old HTC One M7 and it's dismal 4MP camera, but powerful basic photo and video editing capabilities and that 1080p screen, I'm a mobile, social network sharing machine!
Sony should sponsor your videos bc after watching your reviews on this RX100 series this morning I went out and bought the mark III ! (the IV and V were so out of my price range lmao) keep doing you, love the detail and depth of your reviews
I don't even like cameras to that extent, but I watch his videos just because they are that good and I always learn something. Great job once again man!
Enjoyed the review. The combination of using stills, video, vlog sampling and the explanation of the flash and view-finder made for a complete video. I've seen some vlogs with it and it does do an amazing job. This may have swayed by vote to move forward to purchase one and try! Thumbs-up on the video brother! :)
I just had to pause the video. You're the best MKBHD, really. The content and information you offer is sub par to no-one. You have the best tech channel on UA-cam, by far. Thanks for all the hard work and dedication, I know it's not easy, but you never let us down. I hope you read this, but if not I know a lot of us feel the same way. Thanks again, Trevor.
2022 and the Mark III is still a fantastic little camera. The only limitation is the lack of extrenal mic input for quality audio on videos. The mark VII has a mic input but lacks the fast lens ( F1.8) of this version. Also consider the Zv-1 which is essentially a vlogging version of the rx100
I have a Sony point and shoot, but in future I am going to buy something like this. I had borrowed a friend's DSLR for a fortnight to get a feel of it, because obviously, DSLR cameras take superior quality pictures, there are so many controls, and I wanted to try it out. The problem is that it's quite heavy, and it's annoying to take such an intricate item on a vacation and it's high maintenance. I love taking pictures, but I don't have the patience to take a DSLR with me wherever I go. This is perfect. :)
I've been watching MKBHD videos from the early days but seeing this camera in his hand made me finally realize how big hands he has. That camera looks like the toy version in your hand, Man!
Mambo Chapanduka There's no point in Apple making a camera, the iPhone already uses Sony sensors and since Sony already make a lot of cameras at various price points where can Apple fit in? It's better for Apple to just make the iPhone as good at taking photos as possible, or make an iPhone/camera hybrid like Samsung have done.
For what it's worth I mostly agree. I own 2 Rx100's and 1 Rx100m2 and will be getting the m3 shortly. I own about 12 other cameras mostly Canon (prefer the Canon jpg engine). Even DSLR's with Canon "L" glass lenses in the $1,700 range each. This little camera is a marvel of engineering and capability. I always have one on me. One thing Marques didn't really make clear is that the camera will establish a wifi network to which an iPhone without NFC will connect to in wifi settings and then you use the PlayMemories iPhone app to import. It's not as fast as NFC but works perfectly with a few extra clicks. I routinely will take an image with the RX100m2 in very low light where the iPhone camera can't compete and then send over to the iPhone for uploading to my Cloud storage for immediate backup, or sharing. Always enjoy your reviews!...put a sandwiched optical glass screen protector on those $800 cameras! It will help with resale should you ever part with one...I haven't yet as my family uses them too!
Brave Excailbur You don't understand the importance of sensor size, and lens quality (both aperture size, and build quality). Please don't say a phone camera is better than this camera. I see your profile picture is a picture of a pretty expensive looking car... What you're saying is a Toyota Camry is as good as that car in your profile picture.
Covered all the pertinent points with good flow and not too long/repetitive. Personal observations add some humour while also being relevant. Nice post thanks!
Hey guys, I would like some advice/help on choosing cameras if possible. I'm stuck between the Sony RX100 M1 (considering the M3) or the Canon EOS M1. I want the ability to take solid quality pictures (doesn't have to be crazy good) but the main use would be to create videos, such as UA-cam videos, etc. I would usually go with a camcorder but I want a product of a more compact size combined with a nice balance of film and photo. Also, if you recommend the EOS M, which bundle is more efficient: EF-M 22mm STM Lens or the EF-M18-55mm IS STM Lens? Thank you in advance.
***** Hey, thanks for replying! I currently own a Canon 60D and bought it a few years ago not knowing anything about other lenses, but ended up buying a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS for stabilization in hand held shooting at slow shutter speeds. Still pretty interesting camera, the MKIII
I plan on starting a Tech channel once I build my custom rig,so iv been searching for a starter camera and I think I have finally found the ONE! Love the review!
The screens on Sony cameras are often made of a very hard plastic instead of glass, so they tend to scratch very easily. First thing I had to buy for my Sony NEX was the Sony screen protector. They really need to start using real glass. Gorilla glass would be great. But I sadly think this is just a way for Sony to get more money. Either you pay them more for a screen protector or you upgrade your camera body more often because the screen gets scratched to hell.
Great Video - I just bought the camera, and its good to hear all these good things about it. Especially in a fun 7min video that keeps you interested throughout. Cheers from Shanghai
Great review, but one small correction, the ring around the lens was done first by Canon in the PowerShot S line, with the Powershot S90 a few years back, if I remember correctly, and it actualy has a better implementation because it has feeback, it "clicks". Keep up with the excelent work.
Hi Marques, another great review here with the Sony MKIII. I didn't even know this thing existed until finding it here on your channel. I can trust your perspective on the pros and cons of tech devices, so no surprise. ...I want this camera! I may even post a vid or two. Thanks for the awesome reviews!
***** That's pretty kickass. I prefer the colour tone of the MK3 to your standard video shooter. Even if it's arguably not as natural. £700 in the UK though. Ouch!
captainanorach The mk3 is soooo expensive. That's 1160 in US Dollars!! It'd be loads easier to just to import it from the USA for $600, which is only £417, saving loads...
If you already have one and want to get something smaller to carry on the side. Lugging a DSLR for a whole day is not fun, this is much more convenient and can take shots on par with a lot of them.
Audio is sub par...but really what audio in a pocket camera is great? haha. But the fact that we are even comparing this to a DSLR speaks volumes about the camera's capabilities. Great video!
YIKES, man. With a starting price of $798, I really don't see this camera as a good suggestion for a starter. I'm sure there are tempting features such as size, general quality, and apparent IQ, but I don't see how this will teach anyone anything. Point-and-shoot cameras are usually fixed in Automode because adjusting settings is a pain. Now, if it really does take some of the images I've seen, this clearly blows all point-and-shoot cameras out of the water, but wow...$800? I'm a photographer, so I could never see myself spending that kind of coin on a camera that doesn't make me money.
This is meant for people who can take advantage of the functionality and size. Basically for prosumers to use when the size of a dslr is too unpractical.
That is why he is comparing it to a DSLR and not other point and shoots. If you were a real Photographer you would get what he is talking about. $800 bucks won't get you much better if you want to go DSLR and that does not even includes the lenses. If you you would have also listened, he was talking about a starter for vlogging, not professional photography.
As a first generate rx100 owner I love my device! I haven't considered in buying a DSLR yet as I'm still learning photography. If I were looking to invest $800 in something I would throw that down on sonys a6000 I would love to upgrade my rx100 to the mkiii but I feel it still meets my needs.. For now.
The audio is Ok for a vlog. I vlog with the RX100 M3 and it sounds quite good, especially if you're only using it for a vlog. The only issue is that there is the lack of a headphone jack, so there is no way to plug external audio directly into the camera, so if you're planning on record audio seperately, you'll have to buy a recorder or use your smartphone and then sync up the audio in post production.
Great review and straight to the point. The sample video you shot of yourself with the MK3 looks way better than the other camera you used for most of this review.
I have been watching your reviews and unboxing for years, I like the way you explain things about the product and gadgets. I keep checking your youtube videos for more updates. Best Wishes Muneer Basha
Thank you for the review Marques ! I will go buy the Sony RX100 MK3 today ! I hesitated because the weight but I am convinced now that is the buy around...
I've heard of people having problems with the camera focusing and the audio isn't as great as other pocket cameras. but still it is the best pocket camera for picture and video quality.
Thanks for your review man and particularly for the pictures taken, especially the one in low light. Great sharpness and image quality. The more I research about this compact camera, the more I get impressed with its features and now it might be the time to buy it as its price has significantly dropped down from nearly the fortune (for a compact camera of such size) it used to cost.
It is actually not 24mm f/1.8. It us 8,8mm f/1.8 as they write on the lense. If you want to convert this to full frame equivalent you need to conver both the focal lenght AND the apperature. So the equivalent is is 24mm f/4.9. You can also check this by looking at the deptht if field which reflect this. A common miscalculation though. Else a super camera and video. I own the camera and are supper happy with it.
Very well done! One important note: A feature that the iii does NOT have but the i and the ii do have is the ability to capture stills while shooting video. This is a critical feature for me and the reason I went with the ii. Please tell me if I'm wrong because I'd love to have the built in viewfinder, but NOT if I have to sacrifice the ability to capture stills. Carrying the viewfinder around is often very inconvenient and therefore I don't use it much. I wish Sony would not have dropped this feature... Thanks for the great work!
Incredibly nice review. I love pretty much all of your videos, but this one has particularly excellent videography. With your perfect selective focus and smooth revolutions about the product, you don't just show us the camera but take us on a visual tour.
You convinced me to buy the Mark II, thanks! Best camera I've owned so far. Especially portable, and takes great pics. I'm just starting to get into photography, but didn't want to lug around a DSLR, the Mark II was a perfect choice for me. It's small enough to fit in my pocket, but doesn't skimp out when I need quality. Thanks again!
After watching this video I am wondering which impressed me more, the camera or the cameraman. I would rather have the whole package. Thanks for doing great job !!!
Please note that the zoom is only 2.9x, so you can forget taking distant shots where there is no possibility to get closer. Marques forgot to mention this...this could be a deal breaker for many, but if you dont mind it, this camera is a no-brainer.
Fantastically well filmed video. The shifting focus shots and cinematics kept me interested in something I have no interest in buying! You are getting better with each video you produce.
Hi mumbo didn't think I'd see you here
Highly agree with everything
so. true.
Eyy! It's Mumbo! Didn't think I'd see you here.
Mumbo you watch marques????
Your focus is always so amazing. I'll watch your videos just to look at how sharp the focus is
Exactly THAT is the reason why i prefer the RX 100 3 instead of Canon G7 XII
You nailed it
"Swiss army knife of pocket imagery." Love it haha. So much great shots in this one!

Excuse me sir am I high or is there a new font being used in the UA-cam app ?
based on the quality, id rather buy pocophone.
pocophone is the second best camera in the world now. look up mkbhd last videos.
That guy at 4:14 looks familiar...
Hi!
LOL
Are u twins haha
I bet he hates tech and would never start a UA-cam channel ;)

Damn, this video is filled to the brim with incredible shots. The lens extension shots and the focus shifts were on point. Incredible job!

Nice
There is a caveat for vlogging---there is no microphone jack. So all you can have is built in mic audio.
Great pocket camera ever

My family wants also one but i have no Bill that i can fill haha

Same here lol. I'm probably gonna have to go with a Panasonic G3 or G5 with the standard kit lenses. The MKIII looks so awesome though...
Watching this in 2023 and you deserve everything that’s happened to you dude this video is still great
I don't know anything about cameras, but I watch this video anyways 'cause +MKBHD!!

who's watching in 2019???
I am, and just bought one last month. so much better image quality than my LG v20.and other phones.

the lead you have on UA-cam in regards to video quality is astounding

Im considering one but stuck between this and a Panasonic gx85 as a travel camera.
Hi Marques, can you do the top 10 or top 5 best headphones under $100
200$ is more reasonable...

Would you be willing to spend 900-1000 dollars/euros for it,
Brave Excailbur You don't understand the importance of sensor size, and lens quality (both aperture size, and build quality). Please don't say a phone camera is better than this camera.
I see your profile picture is a picture of a pretty expensive looking car... What you're saying is a Toyota Camry is as good as that car in your profile picture.
WindowsVista562 The pictures in the video didn't seem that different from what a phone could capture. I don't understand.
Unless your taking photos and making money off of them, this camera is really overkill compared to the fine photos my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 takes.
I would say a T3i would be a better choice for a starter UA-cam channel. About the same price, but offers expandability in the future with new lenses.
When you push the VIEWFINDER back in... HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON DOWN the camera won't turn off

Agree, why would I spend 800 dollars on a camera when I already have a fine one on my samsung galaxy note 3?
Brave Excailbur if it's fine then good for you man, but my RX100 Mark I shoot much better quality image than my Note 3 honestly
For now.
Just bought one in 2019 because it is still in Sony’s lineup and still one of the best point and shoots in the marketplace. 👍
does it have an external mic connector?
is the audio good for vlog though ?
+EJB THE KID I would also like to know...
I have the m2 and I think it's great!

Thank you for the review Marques !
I will go buy the Sony RX100 MK3 today !
I hesitated because the weight but I am convinced now that is the buy around...
I have the MK1 and it is amazing! If/when i need to upgrade i am sticking with this camera!
What a raving review for sony, they nailed it. Like the evf in such a pocket size.
Its still not dropped, its cost 550 euro, is too much, in my country Bulgaria average salary is 550 euro 😢😢😢😕😕😕😕
FYI- My Canon S100 also has that programmable ring around the lens. The RX100 is not the only camera using it...
GREAT VIDEO!!!! good to see some different videos lately not just smart phones even though I love those too lol
The perfect camera,nice design,fits in pocket,great shots.
You give the best, and most articulate reviews I've ever seen & heard.
👍, share, & subscribed my friend!
Great review man !! Love those sample shots .
Please note that the zoom is only 2.9x, so you can forget taking distant shots where there is no possibility to get closer. Marques forgot to mention this...this could be a deal breaker for many, but if you dont mind it, this camera is a no-brainer.
It just keeps getting better!!
