  • Date-wise, I'm going for June 1995, when Bon Jovi were in concert in Gateshead. That would also tie in with the fact I recorded this clip when I lived in Norwich, during an atmospheric lift which brought in Bilsdale on a baking hot afternoon. Network North (I seem to recall) was TTT's attempt to get even more local in the south of the patch, be it because they wanted to -- or because the ITC made them. I'm assuming it was just a Bilsdale thing, but the use of the word 'Network' implies other transmitters were involved. Perhaps they just liked alliteration. Let me know if you know more.

Re Network North... in the 1991 franchise round, Tyne Tees made a commitment to putting out a full half hour news bulletin at 10:30 each night. They already had a ten minute or so opt-out in Northern Life for the south of the area. Granada (who were bidding against them) countered this by proposing a separate main news programme for the Bilsdale patch.
When TTT merged with YTV one of the first things to be canned by Yorkshire was this late bulletin. It messed up their plans for a common schedule and was considered too costly. But the ITC pointed out that this extra programme was part of a commitment to increase the regional hours put out in the NE.
The compromise was to implement Granada's proposal instead, something that had proven popular in market research. But, the YTV proposal was to put this programme out on both Tyne Tees South and a number of relays and the Hull sub-region of YTV. They even moved some of the YTV news team to the new programme.
This was nixed by the ITC quite late in the day and Network North was only ever shown on Tyne Tees even though local press advertised it as being on Yorkshire as well for quite some time. My suspicion is that YTV didn't give up on their desire to show the programme on some YTV transmitters and the promotion in the press was a placeholder.
When the whole thing was abandoned in 1996, Tyne Tees then went back to shorter optouts for Bilsdale and the shortfall in hours was made up for by increasing the main bulletin to a full hour. The nearest they ever got to the original proposal came in 2001-2 when the main show was reduced back to a half hour, with opt-outs, and a lunchtime bulletin/magazine show "North East Today" was put out for a while (also with separate shows for Bilsdale). All of these were variations on a theme of fulfilling the original commitment.

This will be from 1995, yes. Between 5th June (that's when that ITN title sequence was introduced) and the end of the year when Network North was dropped.
