  • The Chancellor has been told she'll need to raise taxes in order to ensure Britian does not return to austerity if she sticks to her pledges on government spending.
Labour had set out ways to raise £9 billion in their manifesto - but after agreeing inflation-busting pay rises for public sector workers that figure will now need to be much higher.
It's expected Labour will introduce higher taxes on pensions, capital gains and inheritance.

I thought immigration brought so much money to the economy... Seen as we have so many immigrants shouldn't the tax bill for each individual go down

Tax profits on selling the primary residence? No one will move. IHT at a punitive 40%? People will try to evade it. Stamp duty on downsizing? Granny will stay in a 5 bed house.
The caller talks sense 👍🏻.Tax system needs to be simple, with NO loopholes for the slippery in society to fall through. If they leave our shores, let them pay an exit tax and revoke their citizenship (like USA and other countries). It really is that simple. The top jobs will be eagerly filled. Captains of industry will not move factories overseas as that costs multiples more than the tax they owe in this country. Pay what is due! We need to stop being blackmailed.

No. Infact I'm arranging my affairs so that I go from being a significant tax payer to being a claimer on the government. I'm not going to give this government a penny in income taxes and Im going out if my way to get back as much as I can of the money they've had off me. Im not alone in taking this strategy...

Jonathon was made chief executive of the very influential labour think tank, Labour Together. A position that starmers chief of staff Morgan mcsweeney used to hold. He is also on tv and media more than when he was an mp, he is being looked after by labour very well since his historic loss at the GE. He is very much an insider who is at the heart of labour policy and direction.

We already pay record high taxes and we have much worse public services these days.
We need to tackle the core issue which is immigration, its driving down living standards for everyone.

The media has been using that line for as long as I've been alive, don't expect it ever to change. The problem is the disparity of wealth exacerbated by the pandemic combined with the last government completely fleecing the taxpayer, the lot of them should be in prison.

@@Pixiedust8399 doesn't change the fact that mass migration has a huge cost. Wage deflation, housing inflation, huge amounts of societal problems, living standards are way worse than even a few years ago

Yes, we need to keep illegal immigrants up to the standards they are accustomed to. Free Mobile phones, Hotels, clothes food, healthcare and leisure centre access.

Who do you think owns those services? When you refuse to process illegal immigrants, prolonging their stay intentionally inflating the bill instead of deporting them or granting asylum, just where do you think that tax payer money ends up? Into the pockets to whomever ever got the contract. Tory donor didn't give millions to the party to get nothing in return.

Why work to keep immigrants in hotels when we have open boarders,, and get treated like a second class citizens in your own country...

The last government refused to process them, they would rather hand out contracts to their rich mates to house them then bill the taxpayer. Have you not been paying attention? the PPE scandal, selling off of the utilities, just about every single government contract offered to donors, selling off Natwest shares paid for by the tax payer at LOSS! If you're working or middle class in the UK your role in life is to be a windmill for the super rich, accept it or tax their assets.
