For sure! I had the pleasure of watching this in IMAX once the count first said “you” my seat literally started to rumble it was such an cool affect to have throughout the movie It made the experience that much better.
For those wondering, the language Orlok is speaking is Dacian, an ancient language from what is today Romania, that hasn't been spoken since Roman times. It gives a true sense of how old Orlok is in this version, that his native language is a dead one.
Well, he’s speaking a made up version of what Dacian could have been. There is no way of finding out what the language was exactly, just how it was described.
Err sorry but I am romanian and no it isn't dacian... when Vlad the Impaler was around in the 15th century romanian was a well established language... the dacians were in antiquity when the romans conquered us not in the middle ages. And Orlock is based on Vlad the Impaler like in Dracula not an older being.
The director himself told the Orlok was supposed to speak Dacian (reconstructed Dacian, of course). The fact that Vlad Țepeș inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula doesn't mean Orlok, especially this Orlok, is directly based on the 15th century Wallachian leader. Apparently Robert Eggers' Orlok is meant to be an ancient Șolomonar, an evil wizard probably thousand, not hundred, years old.
For several centuries, Romanian was only a spoken language; in the administration and church of the Romanian state, the official language was Old Slavic, which was also the language of the church in Transylvania. The first attestations of Romanian words instead appear isolated in Old Slavonic or Latin texts of the 9th - 10th centuries. The first texts in Romanian belong to the 16th century. Therefore, Orlok probably speaks a reconstructed version of Proto-Romanian with a strong Latin base and Dacian substratum@@alinvid6098
I saw this in theaters three times and it got better each time. Something I really love about Bill as Orlok is how he FEELS like something ancient, an old and monstrous creature. With a lot of vampire media the vampires are never really presented in a way that makes them feel like they’ve been around for centuries but you get that first scene with Orlok and it’s like ‘yes, that is an old vampire’.
Me too. I would have loved that. Isaw it on Christmas day, but in a regular theater. I may end up traveling to an IMax theater just to experience that!!
2:21 the way I jumped in the theater is hard to explain, I was AMAZED but SO scared at the same time, I was not expecting Orlok to be THAT scary, incredible way to introduce him to us.
"Wait...is she moaning ? Yeah makes sense cause vampires are ment to be sensual and erogenous beasts and once they bite their victim theyOOOOAAAH MA GAAAAD !"
This movie is a masterpiece. The scene of Thomas in front of Count Orlok's castle with the arrival of the carriage is wonderful. Eggers one of the best in the game.
No IMAX theater near me was playing this, so my brother, some friends, and I drove 2 and a half hours to an IMAX theater at 10pm to see it. 100% worth it.
Saw it on opening day and it absolutely changed my life. Robert Eggers and his entire team are a gift to the gothic world. I can not WAIT for a physical and digital release though I will never forget how it felt seeing this in the theatre!!
I can't begin to express my joy at seeing a (more or less) "Dracula" take which holds true to the villainy of the vampire present, and doesn't ruin the lead couple. Thomas clearly loves Ellen, and is devoted to her. And she is to him. While Orlok is but a demented, perverted, predatory monster who more or less groomed Ellen. Good to see Eggers not fall into the trap of portraying Dracula/Orlok as the romantic lead.
Good to see you didn't understand anything about the movie because 1) there's no such themes as grooming in gothic horror/gothic romance, at least not in the way we speak about that stuff in our times 2) the director and the cast said multiple times this is a love triangle with Ellen being in love with both her husband and Orlok, as far as Orlok's feeling for Ellen...Eggers said he took inspiration from Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, if you know you know. Try again.
@annalisa-zu6xz an interpretation is an interpretation and it's fair to say Orlok is grooming her, his actions are manipulative and violent (much like a groomer manipulating a younger woman) Yes it can be viewed as a twisted love triangle but it's still fine to examine the story from more than one angle and not be so dismissive.
@@professionalghost138 Why the eff do people only ever mention girls and women being groomed? Actually it's the opposite. Dracula paved the way for Nosferatu. The original silent movie was actually a bootleg version of the Dracula story that was not okayed by Bram stoker's estate

I saw Nosferatu at the theaters in late December and it was really good honestly. That part really almost got me when I saw his face, it was slow but overall it was very creepy and I truly enjoyed it. Bill Skarsgard knows how to pulled off a fascinating & terrifying performance, his voice gave me chills he’s such an amazing actor. Eggers has mentioned that he wanted to draw on folklore more when creating his Orlok. In the folklore vampires are portrayed as strangling and rxping their victims, just as much as they are sucking their blood. What we see in first scene of Ellen resembles these accounts from Serbia, Bosnia etc.
I feel like Bill Skarsgård is like the modern Bela Lugosi as a lot of his most well received performances seem to be horror villains like Pennywise in It and now Count Orlok
