    Come and join me as I make use of the coronavirus quarantine to renovate my home.

    Thank you. This is exactly the project I am taking on. I have never done refinishing so this was very helpful. I also have a white staircase that has had multiple layers of white paint and we went to strip it down to the wood and stain it. We are also going to use ironspindles. Your video is very helpful.

    I am a professional painter and decorator 42 years, a heat gun would have been the best option, cleaner, you could have have purchased a heat gun for about £20 from screw fix and for the moulded profiles a shave hook and scotch pads. A cheaper and quicker method than nitromors or liquid/gel strippers. However you've done a good job in the end.

      Thank you - I didn’t know about heat guns - but I do now! I shall add it to my tools 🧰

      @@DaniCavenderHandley Remember, if there's lead paint there a heatgun would release cancerogenic lead fumes. You will need to buy a lead paint testing kit first to see if the paint contains lead or not.

    Take a look at a product called Peelaway 1 and Peelaway 7. Brilliant if you live in an older Victorian house with multiple layers of paint. Warning the lower layers of paint may contain lead so not ideal for sanding or heat guns. The peel away product is a poultice you put on cover and leave then…… peel away. Hope this helps.

    Makes a change to see someone tackle a staircase from the top and not the easy bit at the bottom (before giving up when they realise how hard it is when they get to thw awkward bits at the top!)...looks youve done a great job, well done. 👍🏾

    Wow it looks beautiful. Looking for tips as I’m starting my stairs too. The house is over 100 years old so god knows how many layers are on the banisters . Xx

    Decent job in the end but a good tip is to wrap the paint that you've covered in paint stripper in cling film.

    I'm in the process of getting the paint of my bannister. The way I'm going about it is I'm getting as much as I can off with a detail sander, one of those small "mouse" type ones, and then using the paint remover liquid only for the tight inaccessible places.

      I used an empty container to scrape off the goo from my tools as I removed the stripper. Worked really well.

    Your handrail looks amazing... inspirational💚..I'm struggling with ours now...doing underneath the handrail is so tiresome. Using a small chisel to get underneath is kind of working...more paint stripper gel needed then nearly finished.

      A combo of sanding, clingfilming the stripper, and taking a mental attitude of “pfff who looks at the underside of a banister anyways?!” 😂

    Try klingstrip i swear by it takes it straight back to wood no sanding nothing

    Hi stumbled across this in the right time. My stairs look the same but with the dark red-brown finish. Did you strip the paint off the spindles as well? Any tips on doing it please?

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Nandhini, we didn’t strip the bannisters, but if you were going to do it then I would suggest making sure you’ve got lots of protection on your floor and stairs. Then, start from the bottom of the spindle and work upwards (to prevent drips running down too fast.)

      @@DaniCavenderHandley thank you Danielle. Also which tool was more useful to you? The scraper or the steel wool?

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  3 роки тому +2

      Definitely the steel wool in the end, especially for the fiddly bit. But if you’ve got large amounts of paint to get through, you may want to start with a scraper.

    Hello
    Can I ask why you didn’t use a heat gun ? Is paint stripper more effective?

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Tina, the short answer is that I used a paint stripper because I don’t own a heat gun and I had no idea that there would be that many layers.
      The longer answer is that because of the curves and details in the wood, I suspect that the stripper penetrated the details better than a heat gun would. However, if you have access to a heat gun, it may work just as well.

    That amount of paint stripper in such a confined area without a face mask is asking for a trip to A&E

    If you had put cling film over the paint stripper it would have worked better.

    • @DaniCavenderHandley

      If your watch some of the other paint stripping videos (kitchen table, stairs etc.) you’ll see i tried cling film but it didn’t help the process unfortunately 😢 I think if I was to try this again I’d invest in a heat gun!
