Thanks for the comment. I actually did the 0-60 MPH run three times because GM says the car will do it in about 8 seconds. I kept bouncing off the rev-limiter. We'll post those runs in a new tech demo video next week.
Test drove a 2014 Cruze LT with the 1.4L turbo the other day. Loved it. But then I saw the dealer had a used 2013 Sonic RS with only 4,300 miles on there lot. Lets just say I liked driving that even better and now it's sitting out in my driveway. Love my new Sonic RS automatic.
I think the reason why someone would buy this over the fiesta St is cost of ownership. Being a young male in early 20s the fiesta would run me almost 320 a month insurance the sonic 125. Big difference and considering with a 350 dollar tune from trifecta you can push 22psi of boost out of the sonic, makes it pretty close to the power of the fiesta St. The money saved on insurance you can get this little car up to 200whp and close to 240 wfpt (look at MT project car or ss project cars for reference). These cars weren't popular with tuners for a long time but now they are finally getting the attention they deserve. May consider buying one
The correct way of stowing the cargo cover is to slide it into the grooves built into the sides of the cargo area. The grooves runs up and down along the seat back so when the cover is stowed, the cover rests right against the seat back. But of course that means if you fold the seats down, you'll have the cargo cover in the way. You can also stow the false floor in the lower position right on top of the "real" floor if you need to carry taller items.
I am 6-5. The Cruze Eco is silent as a mouse. Wonderful suspension. Rides and handles great. At 3000 pounds with only 140 hp it can hit 60 in 7.9 seconds and tops out at 130 mph. It only turns 1700 rpm at 60 yet you don't have to downshift to get out of her own way. If they added rear discs better synchros and a slightly shorter 3rd gear it would be a very sporting car indeed.
Comparing a modified to stock makes what sense there? The Fiesta will also offer tune-ability (no manufacturer builds to full potential, which leaves room). I understand the tune is cheap, but there's more than just power added with the Fiesta that a flashed Sonic would still need, like brakes, tires, and indeed better seats and suspension. Give the Trifecta to the ST for that same $400 or so, and watch it still be ahead-- not to mention it's a 1.6T, so more displacement will help.
The package tray is designed to slide down against the rear seat back, why would you put it under the floor? Also, you didn't talk about the different gear ratios vs the non-RS.
Keep in mind that your Cadillac, while "only" a fifth of the price, is a 13 year old American sedan and this Sonic is a brand new car. With that said, I'm sure a brand new Chevy Sonic would be far more dependable and efficient for those that can afford it. And before you say that your car has been very reliable, keep in mind that you never know what a used car has been through. So while your luck might be good with it, others might not be as lucky with another 13 year old Caddy.
I don't know Barry Soetoro but I know BARACK OBAMA. I believe Hawaii is the place you were talking about. The Sonic is made in America. The Aveo it replaced was made in Korea.
That's the thing, they already share the Cruze engines. The Sonic weighs less, thus is quicker. Looking at 0-60's outside of this video and the difference between a Cruze and Sonic in the straights is a second or more with Sonic ahead. Cruze is the larger model with arguably better looks and more room (I'm not sure if it's even by that much). A Trifecta tune is more worth it in Sonic than the Cruze: Focus ST would still win over Cruze, while a Sonic at least has a chance against Fiesta ST.
There is a channel behind rear seats where you store the cargo cover. It slides right down behind rear seats. So you don't have to store it where this guy did.
Yeah but did you listen to what he said? 28 mpg during SPIRITED driving, your Caddy wouldn't even come CLOSE to 24 mpg if you were beating on it on a windy road. I have little doubt in my mind that this little car can break the 40 mpg easily while cruising down the highway.
i have been looking at cars for months and there is something special about this car. i have an old wrx that i'm trading in and i want something simple and fun with good gas milage and cheap insurance, and i think this car is perfect.
I'd rather buy the Fiesta ST because it's a proper hot hatch. This is a luke warm hatch just so GM can fill that category. Get the Abarth if you want something small. 2:25 is the 0-60 test. Just saved you 5 minutes.
No buddy, your knees don't fit back there. The second someone sits in the drivers seat with you back there, the seat will push back a bit and you'll have to bend your legs apart to fit in there.
Over $20K, 180 hp hatch? That's a Scion tC, except that car costs less than $20K! GM really needs to up the game with this one, especially since the Fiesta ST costs only about $2K more.
For a mid size yes. This is a upper level sub compact. 180 horses in those arent common. Most sub compacts can go up to mid 20,000's in price depending on the chosen options. It's all in what you want in a car. Not everyone needs a 180 horse midsize
I use this as my demo at the Chevy dealership I work at. We have over 3000 cars 9 brands and a used lot annnnnd our own half mile race track inspired test track. This car is pretty damn fun for not a lot of money.
Also keep in mind that your Cadillac was brand new at some point too, so I'm sure there were people like you knocking others for buying that thing new while they could've had a used car for less money.
I don't know maybe its just me but I don't think you can really consider the Sonic a hot hatch. A hatch sure but not a hot hatch. The RS package is mostly an appearance thing. The Fiesta and Focus ST are true hot hatches. Not just a badge and sticker pack. Kind of like comparing a VW GTI and the standard Golf. Just my opinion though.
I want one! I loved the '12 we drove, and that wasn't even the turbo LTZ. Very nice car. Not very practical for me (right now), but it doesn't mean I don't drool over it any less.
Have not driven the sedan yet, but I suspect the driving dynamics are similar to the RS. It's a good choice from what I hear. Wish I could be more helpful.
I have a 2013 Sonic LT turbo hatchback. I have made a few modifications, but nothing crazy. I really like this car, but I wish Chevy would build a two door version. A big part of the reason I bought the Sonic hatch was because of the hidden rear door handles that give it a two door look. But we really need someone to build a real two door performance hatchback. I used to have a 1988 VW GTi 16V, and it was much more fun to drive. I drove it so much I finally wore it out. Unfortunately I no longer trust VW to build a reliable car.
And I don't understand why anyone would by a car like the sonic (unless they lived in the city and most people who buy one wont live in the city) when they can get a car that is better in almost every area for one fifth the price. And that has been my point from the first comment. I just hate how people get brainwashed into thinking that the newest is the best when older car can often be better. That is my point.
I've complained, in the past, about your (poor) starts off the line, but today you seem to nail it... just enough weel spin not to let it bog down. Also on the competitors you forgot the Swift Sport (not sure you get it on the US).
After doing some research on similarly priced hatchbacks, I'm planning on getting this car when/if my 20-year-old Oldsmobile dies (though it may have about 150k miles left). Hoping GM still makes decent cars.
I understand, but there's still some guess work with other money to be spend to make it really worth while. I'd much rather Chevy just make an in-house package, even if it costs as much as the Fiesta because at least then it goes through all the engineering and testing to help perfect the vehicle which costs much more than the difference of the two cars.
"...I'm getting 28 mpg" he says as the next scene shows the little car hurdling up a giant mountain at nearly 5000 ft above sea level. Hmm. May not be close to real life figures.
You might think that, but their just marketing it like that. It's actually based entirely on a South Korean car. All they did was change the badge to say Chevrolet.
The RS is just a regular sonic 1.4 turbo with RS badging. Just like the Toyota yaris SE, Honda Fit Sport etc. the LTZ sonic is a higher trim car not a sporty looking car.
80% of the car comes from the US, but the SK 20% is the engine, transmission and some suspension parts. Shame, I would of preferred a Japanese or German engine. The German made 1.6 SIDI is coming soon though. :)
Nope the US does not get the Suzuki Swift Sport. Saw a review on fifth gear and it looks like a real nice little car. I would love to get a crack at the Renault RS and cup models those look like a blast to drive.
Sounds like you could save yourself money by buying a normal Sonic and then put aftermarket suspension components on it. Or you know, you could just wait for the Fiesta ST to come out which actually DOES have a different engine than the regular Fiesta.
"For over $20,000 an engine 180+ HP should be standard here" It already exists. It's called a Fiesta ST. 197 HP and will flat fry this little Gookmobile.
You're talking about a car in a completely different market segment lol. I don't know how you can knock a brand new small car for not being as spacious as a 13 year old full size sedan.
Ooh, this is interesting. Quoted from caranddriver "The ST, which goes on sale in the U.S. this August, emerged from Ford’s engineering center in Cologne, Germany, and was finessed at its proving ground in Lommel, Belgium. The car will be assembled for North America in Mexico, with an engine shipped in from the United Kingdom. That’s a lot of frequent-flier miles for one small car." Yeah.. so "American." Go Ford.
Shockingly the Mazda 2, with 1.5 liter non turbo engine/100 horsepower, has a 0-60 time less than this Turbo RS....how can that be?? The Mazda is lighter and has a far better shifter but still!
Damn it sucks you Americans miss out on a lot of the hot hatches from europe like the upcoming Peugeot 208GTI, Renault Clio RS, and the current VW Polo GTI, Citroen DS3 Racing etc. Although it's nice the Abarth 500 finally made it to the US. :) $20000 certainly seems expensive, even if it were in AUD.
Only 28mpg?!?! seriously I can get 24 on regular in my 1999 cadillac sls and I payed a lot less for it than this costs, I would have no trouble beating this in a stoplight drag race and I can hold 5 people the size of roman for a 5 hour road trip in comfort and all their luggage for a weekend trip and on the road trip I would be getting 30mpg. Yea new cheap cars still suck compared to buying a good used car.
I have a tuned sonic ltz that I put the RS suspension package on. The car cost me 4400 and the new suspension and tune from Trifecta put me up to 5200 dollars total into the car. Get me a Fiesta ST for this money and I will buy one. I guarantee my modded car performs just as well, but it is cheaper and more reliable than the ST.
@@jaymase3735 not even close man. And please don't get me wrong, not hating on the Sonic, I work for General Motors. The 0-60 is closer to 7.8 seconds not 9.4 and how would you expect to get the exact 0-60 with as little hp it makes and two people in the car? Try a go pro in there next time instead of a camera man
Have a look around Car & Driver and Motor Trend as they'd have 'em. I'll look at Sonic vs. Cruze, too. I don't see "handling" and "skidpad" being the same thing, however, and have many examples to back it up. Just my take. Something as simple as tires can easily skew such things. If you google "Manually Shifted Soul Getting a Grip on Handling" I blogged it, complete with links to the examples. Again it's just opinion from a nobody, but I still say some of that rings true.
I'll take and i did, 2013 Honda Civic EX which has more headroom, legroom and HP, But lacks torque due to the sonics turbo, But that can be modded and fixed real quick........0-100 Real quick!!! I did drive the 2012 sonic lt when i rented it before the 2013 models came and i did liked it, But love the Civics ride comfort better!!
I like this car there's just something about it! And that say's a lot cause I DO NOT like Just any one run the mill car. This car screams FUN! and now being a RS makes it even better. I liked it when it first came out and reviewers weren't that impressed. It was the motor bike style dash and turbo plus .. Between you and me I always liked how it looked :-)
Thanks for the comment. I actually did the 0-60 MPH run three times because GM says the car will do it in about 8 seconds. I kept bouncing off the rev-limiter. We'll post those runs in a new tech demo video next week.
I love that Roman (veteran reporter) pushed the GM rep to give the 0-60 specs! Get to it man! Haha!
Calling it a hot hatch is a bit of an over statement. Maybe a warm hatch...
Lol
Lightly toasted

I love my 2013 sonic rs aswell
I also love my rs MANUAL shift setup as well.oh, it,s a SONIC RS TURBO.❤😊.
put the 2.0 turbo and call it the sonic SS.
You'll might want to watch our Spark Review which is coming up very soon.
This thing really needs the 1.6 turbo that's in the Opel Corsa OPC.
I think the reason why someone would buy this over the fiesta St is cost of ownership. Being a young male in early 20s the fiesta would run me almost 320 a month insurance the sonic 125. Got to tell you, the RS is a ton of fun to drive. Lots of personality too!
When Roman opens up the trunk, I'm always expecting you to come out....surprise! LOL :)

roman is it more fun than the fiesta 1.6 zetec S ??
My truck eats "hot hatches" for breakfast...and my truck hasn't had breakfast yet so it's extra hungry! :-P Sorry Roman, I had to, lol!

What are your opinions on the Sonic LTZ Sedan Turbo? Thats what I may be getting here very soon.
42MPG on the highway...my Trailblazer gets 17...I am very envious! I wish I had the Fiesta, or the Sonic.
Over $20K, 180 hp hatch? That's a Scion tC, except that car costs less than $20K! GM really needs to up the game with this one, especially since the Fiesta ST costs only about $2K more.

hey i even have the base model with the 1.8L 5spd and i love it. saw a black RS in the show room and it was gorgeous.
Hot hatch is an overstatement. Look to the Fiesta ST for that.
A Sonic with all those "goodies" costs $22K? Not much of a deal considering the Fiesta ST costs that much.
u guys should be happy, here in Brasil people pays over $24 k for non turbo ver. almost like engine is an optional.
In any case, $20k fully loaded with a bunch of airbags sounds good enough for me.

Kia Rio?

It has headlight covers just small ones over the exact headlight if that makes sense
120hp is more than 140?...Don't you have the 1.6L na engine?
the pontiac vibe is back

what happen to Nathan???
i think the spark is something like 14 inches shorter
check out that door panel fitment at 3:15... ehhhh

Yeah.. so "American." Go Ford.
Sonic and Cruze are Korean, not Japanese.
Totally different flavor of rice.
Not to mention the aftermarket that available for the 1.4T :)
Shockingly the Mazda 2, with 1.5 liter non turbo engine/100 horsepower, has a 0-60 time less than this Turbo RS....how can that be?? The Mazda is lighter and has a far better shifter but still!

I thought that Sonic AKA Aveo was developed in South Korea (former Daewoo)
all the cars you name are base models .2013 Chevrolet sonic $13,663 in Canada

Get a fiesta ST
I have a tuned sonic ltz that I put the RS suspension package on. The car cost me 4400 and the new suspension and tune from Trifecta put me up to 5200 dollars total into the car. Sure if you want to spend $40k for a car with half of the features....lol.
stick the verano t's 220 hp 2.0 liter turbo in it and slap a ss badge on it. It would be just as good as the late hrr ss and cobalt ss.
Fiesta ST or Sonic RS?
which one is better? (faster, more space, save MPG etc...)
Ryan L Fiesta ST. I own an RS and they’re pretty slow.
This car looks fast but it is hopeless against a Veloster Turbo or even a regular Civic.
The 0-60 is closer to 7.8 seconds not 9.4 and how would you expect to get the exact 0-60 with as little hp it makes and two people in the car? Try a go pro in there next time instead of a camera man

This or the ford focus??
You mean assembled, not built. The parts still come from Korea
im feelin ya. im 6'3". i dont fit inside a sonic comfortably.
3:09 some body is drifting out there ??
The new 1.6L 190 (?) Turbo from europe is badly needed here.
Why is this car $21000+ with so little power? I just don't understand it.
My Ford Fiesta averages 38 mpg around town and 42 on the highway. It also has more hp and is automatic. What gives.
Have a look around Car & Driver and Motor Trend as they'd have 'em. I'll look at Sonic vs. Cruze, too.

***** Yeah but you're civic isnt in the same category. The civc ranks higher on term of payments and insurance.
Less car for more money. What a deal for the auto makers
