I would start with at least 6 hens. With small children in the yard, a rooster is not necessary unless you want to raise chicks. I prefer unfertilized eggs myself, but also, love having a hen and chicks in the yard. They will help keep the tick and spider population down if allowed to roam free in the daytime. If you get a rooster get a silkie they are very tame compared to many others. We started with 4 hens and a rooster. We had a polish chicken, 3 leghorn and then the rooster. Later we added an Easter egger and australorp I think was the others. Our leghorn chickens would come to the door and knock so my daughter would go snuggle them. When everyone’s chickens stopped laying ours didn’t because of how much my daughter loved and cared for them!!! I got close to them too, they are super cool and have funny personalities!!!

I had a bad yellow jacket problem. I called a specialist in and he found every hole in the ground and treated it. Never a problem with them again!! It might be something to look into. It was about $300 and well worth it!! The kids are adorable!!!

Skipped the ham this year but we did have polish sausage also. Couldn’t help but laugh at the egg dyeing attempt. Great fun!!
We started with 6 Rhode Island Reds and 1 rooster that was free to run on n a small coop with a palette for roosting. We kept the pen locked and a metal can for food bungie cord tight across the top. We bought cedar chips for floor and a water can for them. We got 4-6 eggs a day

My grandad had chickens and the biggest problem he had was rats. They go after the eggs and then venture around that area that they went in his house. Not trying to discourage as we really enjoyed seeing the hens and it gave my grandad a purpose after my nan died. Also your friend in the woods might come in after an easy meal always best to make the hutch secure and think of every scenario but I wish you all the best with this as it would be interesting to see 😊
I saw someone on tiktok talking about using construction sand in her coop instead of hay or wood chips. She said it cut down on rodents and snakes. Plus was easy to keep clean. But she also said before putting it in that it needs to be rinsed really well. ... and i dont think you have to have a rooster, unless you want babies or just to hear him in the mornings

Recently purchased a grounding mat for my mattress to sleep on and a Grounding mat to put my feet on when I'm sitting. Best decision I ever made. My sister started out with 6 hens and 1 rooster. If you don’t want to breed them to get more chickens you don’t have to have a rooster. Sometimes those roosters can grow up to be mean and try to spur you. They can really hurt and I would for Colton and Chloe to get hurt. Of course a strong chicken coop where the chickies are safe. If you make the coop basically bulletproof 😂 they will be fine. Make sure you have the wire fencing that has the rectangle holes as a roof plus as the fencing. That kind of wire is really stronger, because hawks will fly down and snatch them up. Also, Megan, you looked beautiful in that gorgeous dress. I wear the longer sundresses they are so comfortable and cool during the summer. You don’t have to worry about bending over and showing your tushy 😂. Those kids are growing up tooo fast. Tell them to slow down. I hope you did not have all that bad weather Tuesday and Wednesday. Shaun, I wish I could taste those ribs. Yummm. You are such great husband and Dad. Definitely make sure you have a secure coop or area if you all get chickens, especially where you all have a stream coming through there.. A mink can take out all your chickens in no time. And chicken math is a thing lol.
You don’t need a rooster just to have eggs. You only need a rooster if you want fertilized eggs to hatch. 3-4 hens should be a good number. We had that a few years ago and we had plenty for my family of four.
Oh yes on the chickens buff orphingtons are great layers.Make sure to get pullets or you’ll end up w too many roasters.Take a needle and thread to check the sex of the chick.Hold it over the chicks head and if the needle moves in a circle it’s a hen.We’ve raised chickens for over 40 yrs

Rosters do guard their hens, act as a lookout, warn then of predators, they're beneficial to the flock in ways besides mating.

If we (us kids) couldn’t work out a civil way of who sits in the front ….we had to sit in the back until sorted. We quickly worked out a roster 😂

You don’t need a rooster just to have eggs. You only need a rooster if you want fertilized eggs to hatch. 3-4 hens should be a good number. We had that a few years ago and we had plenty for my family of four.
Oh yes on the chickens buff orphingtons are great layers.Make sure to get pullets or you’ll end up w too many roasters.Take a needle and thread to check the sex of the chick.Hold it over the chicks head and if the needle moves in a circle it’s a hen.We’ve raised chickens for over 40 yrs
No rooster! Just a super good safe coop and maybe 3 or 4 hens to start.
