I'll never forget when i visited Austin back in 2018 some latinos walked by me and friends and said "Bout time its some black people around here hell yeah" lol wasnt the only time something like that was said either. I think the people would welcome some diversity in Austin
I live in Austin, I've been here for 8+yrs now. Moved here in 08 then Hawaii 14 and back to Austin 15. I love it here. If you are a bout making money its definitely here. What ever you are into its here youll eventually run across people of your interest. @@chalottavessell8479 Hello...Theres a Natural salon in Central Austin in Lincoln Village called Huetiful salon if Austin. Ask for Shalita shes really good and would love to take care of your hair care needs
Great video my friend. I have been here in Austin for over 35 years now. We used to have a very vibrant black community on the east side, (where I live). Recently, gentrification and real estate development has totally changed and mangled that community. Many older black families were essentially forced from their homes due to taxes. This has really changed what I always considered the soul of Austin and the reason I wanted to live on the east side, (well, that and the fact I had no money). If you could have seen East Austin 35 years ago, you would have been in heaven. It is all gone now and unrecognizable.
Yeah, I've been Austin for more than 25 years from Inglewood, Calif. The black and brown community on the east side has almost completely disappeared due to gentrification. I really appreciate going home to L.A. several times a year and spending time in the hood of Inglewood with an economically vibrant African-American and Hispanic- American community. Just hoping the coming newly built Rams stadium does not change things too much. There are some rising fears there now of coming gentrification. Just appreciate and support our communities of color as often as you can to help maintain diversity in our cities which is a nice and good thing for all city residents.
I took a West African drumming class at the Carver African-American center in East Austin a few years back, but class was cancelled due to lack of interest in the community. Sad that besides me and the instructor, very few people of color would show up. There seemed to be more curious white residents coming by occasionally to try drumming with us than black or Hispanic folks. I'm always open to everyone and the sharing of each other's history and culture, but it was disheartening the lack of interest shown by the majority of residents who were still black and Brown on the east side. I'm still interested in finding an African drumming class or group to learn with.
I lived in Austin 1978-1985. Loved it. I've lived in LA county now for 35 years now. I always had sweet memories of Austin. Sorry to hear race relation hasn't improved much. Queer life used to be so much fun back when I was there. You make me feel hopeful about my old favorite city in Texas. Keep up the good work!!!
Excellent video! I moved to Austin with my beautiful black caribbean wife (I am Puerto Rican) from Miami in 2007. I definitely felt the lack of black culture here and the mrs could not find a decent hair dresser anywhere. Pflugerville is probably the best place for black slash interracial couples nowadays. You are not far from downtown and the acceptance is great. I am in the tech scene so north austin is where the money is at. Outside of the lack of black culture, everything about the city is great to raise a family when you balance schools, finances, safety and a certain sense of laidbackness. Plus the outdoor and free to do events are great! Just my 2 cents
Richard Galarza my husband and I are considering moving around the Austin area because he is a tech person and I am an art person. I heard traffic is terrible and the taxes are steep. Do you know some small rural towns near Austin. We both wouldn’t mind living outside of the city limits.
@@msbettyboop1984 On the outskirts for a Techie family, I would recommend Taylor which is just outside of the round rock town. Still has the small town feel for the moment but is close enough to work in North austin where most tech jobs are at. The traffic is terrible everywhere so you have to pick your balance.
My wife and me are moving to Austin in Feb! When you said your dog was aggressive towards other dogs and were about to show up, i was like here comes a scary looking dog.. BAM maltese lol.. looks just like our crazy maltese boy! Great video man!
I feel you on the uncomfortable reactions from other ethnicities. I’ve never experienced discrimination in my life. I’m looking to relocate back to the states and people keep telling me to go to Texas. I’m pretty sure the discrimination can’t be as bad as in Eastern Europe.

@Saul Abrego Oh, I don't really like the beach or hiking, so that's not really a concern xD The reason I'm considering Cali is because of its proximity to my boyfriend's country. I'm a foodie and Austin looks like it has awesome food. So, we will see :D
@Saul Abrego I see. I accept all points of view, I don't want to hype any one place up too much in my head you know? So this is helpful. :) Thank you! Glad you found a spot to call home!
I'm literally in the same situation. Getting more job opportunities in Austin and Austin has cheaper rent. But I'm drawn to the vibe of Cali more, however the prime locations there are so pricey. Idk! Lol
Thanks Rob for this video! As a black man, I was pretty apprehensive for over a year about moving to Austin. I appreciate what you say about not being “that guy” that’s trying to hurt someone or rob someone, because I feel the same way. I’m not a threat. I enjoyed your video, especially from a black perspective that’s not all negative. I’m from Cali, did Houston didn’t like it so much but I’m determined to get back to Texas. I think Austin might be the place for me. Looking forward to more videos.
Love this review. Everything is so well described. Race is something that I was wondering about in Austin. It feels like it's an issue in every city. But with how chill people are? I bet a smile and a hello when you're in an elevator would go a long way to connecting to folks!! ❤💪
@日 イデア Big Ideas my neighbors in north Austin are from all over. The Middle East, India, Asia, black, Latino. It's way more diverse than I thought it would be.
Thank you for this video. I considered Austin but now I am pretty confident we are going to relocate to a diverse city elsewhere... probably in Florida. Diversity matters to me and is a huge factor in my decision-making. I am currently in Dallas and while I live in a diverse nice area it doesn't feel like home. My two little ones and I desire to be near water with more activities for them. I am glad I came across this video.
Thanks for the review of Austin! I actually plan on visiting for the 1st time this wkend and wanted to see what to get in to. Didnt realize it was 7% black tho... hopefully the art scene/scenery will make up for it.
I enjoyed this so much! love your voice, thanks for the pros and cons, I might move to Austin in a year and I want to have an idea what it's like to be there. I love the weather description, when you said it gives San Diego vibes... wow. my family lives in San Diego, it's the best. We'll be moving from Seattle. Can't stand the cold and cloud much longer, and the prices. :(
I agree with other posters that this is the most accurate Austin video I have seen yet. As someone who was born and raised in Texas, I had no idea our speed limits were weird. Edited to add: I am also black, and I do agree that there aren’t many black people here, and I have experienced being treated differently likely because of my race. I went to college in Austin 2014-2018, and it’s amazing how much the more diverse areas (Riverside) have changed even in the two years I’ve been gone. I haven’t spent much time on the east side, but I’ve heard there are more minorities there.
Thank you for this! I loved that you said it gave you a San Diego vibe! I currently live in SD & am looking at phd programs (unfortunately there is not a program here) and came across one in Austin. I love SD so & wouldnt leave if i didnt have to so it makes me feel a little more comfortable hearing that the Austin vibe is somewhat of similar vibe!
Great video. Also, be very careful driving in Austin because there are lots of people who are driving without a car insurance in Atx & if you get into accident with someone without insurance you have to use your own insurance & deductible . I had that happen to me about 6 months after I moved to austin

Hey we are moving to Austin in a couple months. Great video. Diversity is one of the main reasons we look for a neighborhood. Where are the most stable neighborhoods for diversity in Austin?
Sorry you are having to deal with feeling like people are afraid of you that sucks. As a middle-aged man about to move to Austin from Tyler TX I feel I will have to be more watchful over my family in general being in the city. Unfortunately that stereotype does exist in some minds. Saying hi and smiling is something that texans do to make each other feel like a friend. I pass all men every single day that greet me with a smile and how's it going and vise versa. Maybe that will help ease the mind of people who just get hung up on stereotypes Instead of showing fear to what they don't understand. God bless.
Enjoyed your video. We're thinking about moving to Round Rock/Georgetown area. You say traffic is bad. We live in CA (inland empire) and it's 3-4 hours daily going 50 miles each way. Is Austin like that too? As for the homeless population, we have 60,000+ in LA alone. In the inland empire (I.E.) it's getting worse as bigger cities want to move homeless to the I.E.
Yeah Austin has the highest Homelessness in Texas. And Traffic in Austin is the worst in Texas..but like the owner of the video said..it's not worst than LA..But Austin is getting worse TBH
Thanks for sharing your feelings man! Hoping to get down there myself soon. I was wondering what field of work you were in that there were so many opportunities... I’m currently searching indeed in the construction realm and haven’t seen too much. Cheers!
I'm black obvisously. Ive been living in Austin for 3 years. The first friends I made in this town for 4 black people and 3 hispanics. I havent looked at statistics but there is different a lot of POC here.
I love the speed limit down here, but it sucks being used to it and going back to Chicago to see family. I'll be going 55 down the street back home and then see a "Speed Limit 35" sign and be like, oh shit.
Hi so I’m looking to move in a few months here and I don’t know if I missing in the video but how is the diversity in Texas compared to the Midwest? And like what level do you think you feel safe and comfortable in your neighborhood?
I am moving to Austin in July! Leaving Chicago so I am SUPER excited for this new lifestyle. BUT good to know it's not all rainbows and butterflies. So helpful. Thank you!! (Oh, and I 2nd what someone said about you being very good looking!)
After sticking around and traveling to the surrounding cities you realize how basic austin food really is. It was a upgrade from where I was coming from so I was a little shell shocked but after eating it and realizing how many good type of places were missing it hurt. Going out to eat in Houston and Dallas was sooo much better. I think austin will get there though.
Just moved from New Orleans to South Austin 3 days ago 💀🤔.......... definitely a cultural difference that I don’t necessarily like .. but it’s a beautiful scenery nonetheless .. can’t wait to explore more and find my tribe ..I think I can love this place New Orleans East is VIOLENCE every day .....
Thanks for sharing!! I plan on moving to Austin in a year from chicago and cute pooch! My Pomeranian is wild too lol I really believed all dogs think their pitbulls. 😂I’ve always been a minority from my homeland South Africa 🇿🇦 to chicago so I’ve never been uncomfortable with that..... I value safety (there’s no guaranteeing that since many city’s have erratic criminals) then you have the remote areas with serial killers ..... regardless it’s important to keep an eye out. The abundance of work opportunities is a definite pro compared to chicago which is saturated in tech and they demand more years of experience/additional degrees etc
Great video. Thanks for addressing the cons especially the gentrification. I moved to htx from Chicago and was thinking of exploring Austin due to the aesthetic but wasn’t sure how it would be raising kids there. I’ll have to visit for sure. What are the best places to eat or hang ?
The cons are about the same for me! The homelessness is on ANOTHER level and continues to get worse. I’ve been here since 2017 and I’ve definitely seen an increase in black residents. ESPECIALLY where I work. It was almost a culture shock to see so many of us all of a sudden lol but we do mostly live on the outskirts. The food though, i’d have to disagree. I guess being from Louisiana will make your expectations hella high for food lol
As a black guy looking to move to Austin, I was excited about seeing your video.
I'm a biracial woman, but same, haha! :)
As a black girl

Enjoyed your video. We're thinking about moving to Round Rock/Georgetown area. You say traffic is bad. We live in CA (inland empire) and it's 3-4 hours daily going 50 miles each way. Is Austin like that too? As for the homeless population, we have 60,000+ in LA alone. In the inland empire (I.E.) it's getting worse as bigger cities want to move homeless to the I.E.
Lili A The traffic is not as bad as L.A. and the homeless population isn’t as bad either. Coming from LA you would think Austin is a breeze.
Yeah Austin has the highest Homelessness in Texas.
And Traffic in Austin is the worst in Texas..but like the owner of the video said..it's not worst than LA..But Austin is getting worse TBH
Great talking points, thank you!
Hey brother! I love in Austin too! Let me hear more about that job.
Great video, thanks Rob!
It's great you're an Eagles fan bro..im from Philly Eagles all day!
I live in austin from Chicago!! Love ATX
Thank you for this. I was thinking of moving in September and was wondering how many Black people lived in Austin. Also an Eagles fan! Go Birds!
Awe...he reminds me of my Dollah miss you in r.i.p in pet heaven
I love the speed limit down here, but it sucks being used to it and going back to Chicago to see family. I'll be going 55 down the street back home and then see a "Speed Limit 35" sign and be like, oh shit.
Thanks for the run down!!
Love this!!
Hi so I’m looking to move in a few months here and I don’t know if I missing in the video but how is the diversity in Texas compared to the Midwest? And like what level do you think you feel safe and comfortable in your neighborhood?
You gotta check out my other videos lol. I ended up leaving ultimately because of the diversity. However, Austin is a safe city. Super safe.
Speaking the truth 💪
I am moving to Austin in July! Leaving Chicago so I am SUPER excited for this new lifestyle. BUT good to know it's not all rainbows and butterflies. So helpful. Thank you!! (Oh, and I 2nd what someone said about you being very good looking!)
No problem and thanks for the compliment!
Hi ! Im gonna move to Austin Tomorrow would be cool to meet you ! thanks for the video very good
hannia vecino how are you liking Austin so far?!
In your last video about Austin, you weren’t too thrilled about the food scene. What changed your mind?
AerialYorubanWitch that’s the best part! It’s growing on me more. I got another video coming soon!
Thanks for the vid
Thank you for taking the time to check me out.
Thanks for sharing!
The most honest video about Austin, great job man.
Thx for sharing
No longer moving there, may visit though... Thanks for the information.
Great video man. Very well done. Sounds exactly like Seattle 🙃
I swear I started laughing when you opened your mouth!!!!
