Fr I was watching Phisnom stream the entire thing and mentioning pizza tower every other sentence I wanted to crawl into a hole and die of like third person shame
That time were your just honest about your feelings as a game dev in tandem with the success of smash hit indie games made by wonderful teams; the part where you were vulnerable. It spoke to me, I won't pretend like I know the feeling, while I'd like to make games I have yet to put forth the genuine effort towards making one. But the fact you wrote down, put spit to click, and uploaded yourself onto the internet knowing how people can be, well... people. It was cool, s-U-p-A cool.
Absolutely amazing video, really like how in-depth you went for explaining the inspirations they draw from. Also I love the idea of, instead of having a catchphrase, you'd have an anti-catchphrase where you just instantly get shot if you mention pizza tower
"playing through the levels is the game's story" damn right! that's what video games as art are all about, not just how much book you can staple onto it, or how much movie you can make playable, it's the gameplay itself and the journey the game and you both take yourself on. Also, I'd say video games are most like music. They're abstract pieces of art designed to garner abstract emotions. To make you feel something with more than just words or visuals. A video game is a song and you get to play the instruments. There's right and wrong ways to play the instruments, but with the game's structure, and your willingness to learn how to play it right, you'll make beautiful music. You'll feel something special, unique.
Honestly, amazing video, i think it's the first time a UA-camr reviewing ANTONBLAST didn't compare it to pizza tower, and you brought up some really great points
Damn. It’s so rare to find a video game UA-cam reviewer make a review that extremely well made as this and make me think about things I never thought of before.
The fact that no review for Antonblast can go without a single mention of Pizza Tower shows a vexing result of when something gets popular. I remember Pizza tower getting shat on during the early demos about it being a knock off Wario Land fast forward, here we are seeing people compare apples to oranges
your quote about “wario x crash” is funny considering the game calls ITSELF “wario x crash” two of the unlockable sprays are called Dad’s Suit and Mom’s Dress, and their colors are based on crash and wario respectively. (does this imply that Wario is Anton’s mother?)
You slayed, this is a great breakdown!! And i do agree, some bits in the game could use some arrow/graffiti/player's shadow guidance, like obviously not hand-holdy, but damn, there were times I was unsure what the game required, still was a chaotic ride! I'm currently still trying to collect all the level collectables (except Paul) and I'm missing 4 levels
15:00 part of me wants to say that the waiting game sections could make for a good break from the action before the next section in the alternate modes. Like how glory kills in the modern Doom games let you get a breather.
The music asthetic could be honestly described as "Jet set radio music" because "grafitti punk that has lots of vocal samples" is the only way I can describe it.
on the subject of anton’s expy lineage, the bottom of the chai is paul (a placeholder sprite of anton that became an unlockable skin in antonball, the previous game in the series, as well as a secret character in antonblast)
12:04 fun fact, the only time you get this information from the game is in a hub secret room right next to concrete jungle. theres a little demon that has a random chance of telling you that you can slide to make bombs and keys go higher
6:50 antonblast is based on WLVB's movement and what they took the most from Wario. Infact, it's their biggest inspiration in general. they literally have a virtual boy in their office
I honestly never got why everyone keeps comparing this to Pizza Tower, ever since the Dynamite Demo first came out. Yeah they’re both Wario likes but god damnit these two are so different that it always itches me when someone does exactly that
I found your take on likening the participation in a video game to the reading experience of a book faschinating I think you were on to something there. Also thank you for giving anton the respect he deserves I was so incredibly dissapointed by foekoes review of it.
7:09 I think there is an FPS with a similar style, not exactly the same but similar enough. It's called Captain Wayne, not fully out but should be what you're looking for.
It's called Captain Wayne, I think it's the closest thing to an fps game with that aesthetic. (there could be more, as far as I'm aware) It isn't out yet, but there's a demo on Steam and I think Lovecraft would enjoy it a lot imo
I think Antonblast's music aesthetic is if you could imagine putting that "this shit sucks *arrow pointing towards the words literal coolest shit ever*" image into a blender and turning it into a song
18:45 If I had a nickel for every dev making a Wario-like who has had history with beat-em-ups, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice (Woon for McPig and what Harmyarders could be/would've been for Summitsphere).
Gabri on her way to connect every element of a game to some random-ass platformer I've never heard of in my life called "Yoinko Sploinko Gets The Goose" on the PS2: Also I would call that "graffiti aesthetic"...uh...Funkass. Onomastics is my passion.
Can't wait for a 2D beat-em-up platformer in a Rayman-like world with board sliding, wind gliding, skydiving and animal riding inspired by Kya: Dark Lineage for PS2.
7:35 on the topic of Rayman, Rayman origins is legitimately one of the best platformers in my books. Legends is good too, but the progression of the levels in origins feel way grander and memorable. Along with that, the better you get in the game, the more fluid your movement is in the levels. It makes for one of the best games that have time attack levels imo
Rayman Legends feels like a level pack because it's the most incredibly crafted series of levels with absolutely nothing in-between and I love it but it makes me a little sad
exactly! The levels are fantastic, especially 20,000 lums under the sea as it holds the most connection between levels. But so many of them more so blend and are slowed down by the Murphy gimmick. Granted, I enjoyed them don’t get me wrong, but they often feel antithetical to Origins level design where the main idea was to master the level and go fast via the time trial. I often choose origins over legends when replaying cuz of its smoother progression, it’s a great comfort game for me. It’s fair but not mindless and challenging but not to the point where I get mad. Anyway thanks for listening to my Rayman ramblings lol
Great video! Def agree with essentially everything Especially the wasting your time part LOL I am not looking forward to doing hitless satan because of the like total 5 minutes cutscenes i need to watch per attempt how fun
I dont think they will make another Antonblast specifically. But i do think they will make another ‘Anton’ game. First it was Antonball, which is peak in its own way. Then Antonblast, they are going to add more to this franchise i am sure of it
Honestly, Pizza Tower has never looked appealing to me gameplay wise and so I haven't played it. It looks visually cool and funny but the gameplay never looked fun. Antonblast does though and I am planning to play it soon.
I decided to play pizza tower only for it's artstyle, but holy shit was i pleasantly surpried with the gameplay, at least pirate this game it's so good. I haven't finished antonblast yet but can say that i love it almost as much as pt already
I feel like maybe like. (And just to be clear i dont mean the bandicoot) crashcore could be good? Lots of explosions and objects smacking into eachother. Lots of loud sounds. Idk maybe not crashcore because of the afornentioned bandicoot but something akin to that.
I know you said you don't like the thought of indies being competitive but dammit, I honestly think indies have really stagnated in that unless you're a shooter or horror game, most indies heavily rely on pastel cutesy shit and playing it safe. Antonblast just SCREAMS confidence and attitude through and through, and I wish we could see more of that.
I agree and disagree, because imo it goes both sides. It kind of feels like every indie game now has to be either ultra violent breakcore retrobro hard = better murderfest where you go 500MPH every time you press W or lo-fi cozy pastel story-based relaxation work sim. I like Antonblast because it's able to be aggressive without being overloading, it knows when to pull it back and isn't a constant assault on your brain. (Uh, once you turn the screenshake off...)
@@Gabri_Lovecraft Yeah, I just specifically mentioned the latter because the lack of OOMPH is felt the most in indies that aren't FPSes or horrors. When people were posting about Webfishing and Atylss back-to-back I straight up thought the two were the exact same game at first, the latter just has textures, AA, and T&A. Antonblast, Yooka-Laylee & the Impossible Lair, and Pizza Tower are the three greatest indie platformers ever created because they aren't just "old thing you like but again!", they keep constantly firing out and nailing idea after concept after breakthrough and it all just works for em. They all also have their own unique identities while still being well within the realms of independence, instead of falling to style fatigue like most other indies these days (I don't like how The Behemoth fell off of their gritter artstyle and into a more cozy pastel one).
@BrochachoTheBro @Gabri_Lovecraft i think you'd both find games like Cookie Cutter, Decline's Drops, Magenta Horizon, The Immortal Life of Goldman, Judero, Symphonia and The Midnight Walk interesting. (And there's so many more i could mention). All of them are very striking but i want to put some extra attention to Cookie Cutter. It's a hand-drawn 2D metroidvania that's simply *solid*. Smooth combat with weapons ranging from a metal fist to an electric guitar to a chainsaw and more. Exploration and platforming's solid. And the world's a fuppin' awesome colorful, cartoonish sci-fi/cyberpunk setting with characters like a spiritual robot, an angry flying server that shoots missiles and an amorous skeleton robot with an afro and star-pattern blue pajama pants. Cookie Cutter Doesn't aim to reinvent the wheel. The lead dev simply wanted to make a game that really appeals to *him*. Stated that the lead character, Cherry, is meant to be a bit like a female Wario. Unconventional, violent, somewhat chubby, dressed like a waitress, red chelsea cut, love for violence. Cherry's not here to be an outright hero-- though, crass and blunt as she can be, she's not here to be a deliberate b#%$h either. Lead dev has a lot more planned for the future and i'm very excited for it. Dude went over more than 100 interviews with publishers before he found one that was alright with not interfering with the project in *any* way. As weird and out-there it could get.
That ending gag is probably the world record for the fastest I regretted a joke once I hit upload. Merry Christmas. Give me money:
