OMG THANK YOU FOR THE ANTI-STANLY RANT! I grew up at the time looking at screenshots of Ultra 64 and the Mario 64 beta, theres so much to unpack there and even getting to finally play the game just a few weeks after it was released (using a rented N64 from blockbuster) the original game has so much hiding under the surface. The personalization AI thing is a bit of a stretch since that was never really a thing with the N64. On the other hand, the late 90's was around the time we were learning about unused content and hidden content thanks to emulators starting to get powerful enough to run an NES. More people finding out about the minus world or like the hidden levels in Metroid (before anyone knew what code overflow was) ment that a game like Mario64 could possibly have layers and layers of hidden worlds that only the faithful can find. Add to that the way 3D animations are precise enough to convey something but crude enough to hide where it comes from. (like so many of Mario's death were way too real as a kid) There's an amazing horror story to tell without having to shoehorn some random bloodthirsty AI like if it was a sonic.exe creepypasta
